TNS-12547 lost contact - listener log has TNS-12516??
OS: Win98
DB: Personal Oracle8i 8.1.6
Attempting to make connection from JDBC and eventually found out even TNSPING has problems. I have a listener configured on port 1521, using 127.0.0.1 as the host (I'm doing development on same machine).
I do lsnrctl start LISTENER, but afterwards a lsnrctl status LISTENER returns nothing. Not sure if it only replies if there is a problem. Anyway, it seems like the listener is running, otherwise I'd get a different error, like no listener.
I can't find docs on TNS-12516, and the explanation of 12547 isn't very helpful. The full error text in the listener.log is as follows:
22-JUN-2001 16:05:24 * handoff * giop * 12516
TNS-12516: TNS:listener could not find available handler with matching protocol stack.
I can provide more info if needed.
I also have the same problem. It doesn't seem to happen regularly but off and on. When this database state occurs, I can't even shutdown the database. It appears to hang due to an unknown cause. When I check my listener log, I see that the error messages I was getting were the TNS-12516 errors. The really odd thing is that some of my Perl DBI and PHP programs were still going through without a problem while my sql*plus and discoverer connections were dying with the TNS-12516 error. If anyone has ANY ideas at all, please respond.

I just installed 11.1.0.7 client on win 2003 server and tried to connect to 9.2.0.6 database but both tnsping and sqlplus is giving 'TNS-12547: TNS:lost contact' error
Please note that the same client 11.1.0.7 is connecting to database 9.2.0.8 and higher i.e 10.2.0.3 and 10.2.0.4.
Please advice as why 11.1.0.7 client is not connecting to 9.2.0.6 database and giving 'TNS-12547: TNS:lost contact' error.
Thanks in advance.Hi,
1)ping is working?
2)disable the firewall running on the windows machine,Check firewall at network level is affecting this connection
3)listener is up and running on the EBIZ side and u can connect using the service_name of EBIZ in EBIZ server?then copy the service_name entry form the server tnsnames.ora to the windows machine and try
4)Check at server o/s level are there any restrictions for other machine to get connect,Can u telnet to the server from this machine?

TNS-12547: TNS: Lost Contact
I installed Oracle8i on Windows NT EE edition with SP6a. It
passed the test in Net8 Assistant. But after I installed a
nother package and I tried to test again with: cmd> TNSPING
MAchineName, I got "TNS-12547: TNS: Lost Contact".
Thanks.
RobertThe OraBooks suggest that the package you loaded (or
dependecies) terminated abnormaly while executed (see below).
Suggestion: Debug and/or reload the package if applies.
Make sure that for typical SGA buffer configuration you have at
least 512 RAM and mprocessor at least 600MHz clock and plenty of
disk space.
<<
TNS-12547 TNS:lost contact
Cause: Partner has unexpectedly gone away, usually during
process startup.
Action: Investigate partner application for abnormal
termination. On an Interchange, this can happen if the machine
is overloaded.>> -
We use Central and Regional database, between them we create dblinks. WE use TNSPING to check the connectivity, from Central it works but from regional we get a message TNS-12574 TNS lost contact.
We use Brodband, DDN and VSAT communications. Only from sites, which are used VSAT communications we get a problem. Is there any possibilities to make a connection.Starting TNS Listener gives "Linux Error: 32: Broken pipe"
by Jeff Hunter, Sr. Database Administrator
You have successfully install Oracle on Linux, installed and configured your application and everything is working fine. You get a call several months later from an angry user saying that he cannot login to the application. The error message indicates a problem connecting to the Oracle database. After noticing the Oracle TNS listener is not running, you attempt to start it and get the following stack trace error:
% lsnrctl start
LSNRCTL for Linux: Version 8.1.7.4.0 - Production on 18-JUL-2003 10:54:01
(c) Copyright 1998 Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved.

TNS-12547: TNS:lost contact
TNS-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
TNS-00517: Lost contact
Linux Error: 32: Broken pipe
You then check with the SYS admin to only find out that nothing has changed with any of the network settings!
This is one of those troubleshooting issues that can take several hours to track done. But as it turns out, the most common reason for this stack trace when attempting to start the listener is the log file for the listener ($ORACLE_HOME/network/log/listener.log) has reached its 2GB file size limit on Linux. To alleviate the problem, simply archive or delete the file and restart the listener. -

Hi,
I tried to install Oracle 10.2.0.1 on a RedHat 4 box. Both, Oracle and RedHat are 64 bit versions. The installation was fine but the database creation (with dbca) could not create the database because of this error: ORA-12547: TNS:lost contact
I can not find any errors in the installation log. Only this warnings in the make.log:

Error message "ORA-12547: TNS:lost contact" during dbca
Background info: I am building a new test 11.2.0.3 RAC cluster running on IBM pSeries hardware with AIX 6.1 OS level. I need to practice building a cluster and then adding a new node later. Because of limited hardware availability, my inital cluster will have 1 node and I will add the additional node later.
I installed Grid Infrastructure successfully. GI and ASM are online and appear to be working normally. Today I installed the 11.2.0.3 database software. I am now trying to create a test database using DBCA. After entering all of the database information (SID information, where db files should reside, memory sizing, etc.) the database creation begins, then immediately issues the error message "ORA-12547: TNS:lost contact".
I have searched MOS (Metalink) and also reviewed a few sites using Google. All of the information indicates this problem occurs most often when trying to log into an existing database using sqlplus. I haven't found anything related to this error message during database creation.
Does anyone have advice on how to troubleshoot where the problem is coming from? Can you point me to some documentation that would help with this issue?
Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you!Srini,
I was verifying that I understood your request. The last install log relates to the Oracle db software installation and was created by OUI. The DBCA utility has not created any actual install logs. DBCA issues the error less than 10 seconds after I choose the "Finish" button to begin the database creation process. I also reviewed 4 notes on MOS and unfortunately they do not seem to apply. The permissions settings appear correct on all directories for both the database software owner and the grid infrastructure owner as well.
Here are the last 200 lines from the OUI install log. Thank you again for all of your help!

DBCA Producing ORA 12547 TNS lost contact when I try to create a database
Hi all!
I just installed Oracle 11GR2 (only software not creating a database) on Oracle Linux 6.4 64 Bit via Oracle VM VirtualBox. I created a new Listener to create a database. It looks working. But when I try to create a new database with dcba; I had an ORA-12547 TNS lost contact after I had specified all options for creating the database. I'm too new to get what's going on here. Already, the Oracle Software has occured a few errors while the installation. But the software has been installed successfully at the end. Maybe I went wrong from the beginning. What should I do about managing that ORA error? Can anybody suggest me something?
Btw I have installed the all installations with information on this link: ORACLE-BASE - Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2) Installation On Oracle Linux 6
If we consider that I did nothing after those installation, what should the next step be to create a database successfully?Hi all!

Repeated 'ORA-12547: TNS: lost contact' messages after installing Oracle 10
Hi,
I installed Oracle 10g on Redhat ES 3, and the install went well, but when I try and interact with the server I get the message:
ORA-12547: TNS: lost contact
For example, if I use the Database Configuration Assistant to attempt to create a database, I will see the above message when it begins the database creation process, or if I try to interact with the Oracle server using sqlplus I will see the above message after each command entered.
I had recently tried to install Oracle 8.1.7 on the same box, but abandoned that after deciding that the effort required to link Oracle 8 on RHES3 just wasn't worth it.
I have been told that my previous partial installation of Oracle 8 may be the cause of the problem, and have been advised to uninstall Oracle 8, uninstall Oracle 10g, and reinstall Oracle 10g. I find it hard to believe that it would require such an action to solve this problem. Are there any configuration changes I can make to resolve it?
My problem sounds like it may be similar problem to a recent posting by Hugo Ferrer - but my Spanish isn't good enough to fully understand Hugo's problem. Anyways, I am new to Oracle, so thanks for any help with this problem.
Colm.My last message asking for a grater degree of specificity was not overly specific, hence I am posting the kernel parms that I have set with the hopes that you will spot one that I set improperly or one that I neglected to set.

Listener Won't accept connections after time (OERR TNS lost contact)
I am running 8.1.7.0.1 on Linux 7.1 (all patches applied).
Things were going great until this morning and my listener now
seems to be flaking out. After I start it, people can connect to
the database but within a few minutes they start getting
ORA-12547 TNS lost contact when they try to connect. If I
tnsping the database from my client I get the "No Listener"
message. Doing a status on the listener shows that (2) service
handlers are active for my database...when I first start it there
is only one. What does that mean? Does anyone have any
suggestions? Thanks in advance...How is your Apple TV connected to your Computer? I know that you are doing this wirelessly, but is their an access point being used between your computer and the Apple TV? If so, is it and Airport Extreme, or a third-party router? If third-party, what type? N? G?
What is the distance between your computer and the bedroom? What type of computer are you using Mac or PC? If PC, XP or Vista?
Sorry to ask all of these questions, but I'm trying to figure out if this is a problem with the distance and, if so, can the router be tweaked to increase its broadcast to your bedroom.
If the the distance is too great, you might have to purchase an Airport Express to work as an extender. On the other hand, if you are using a Linksys Router, you can change the Radio Beacon to improve signal. If you are using an access point google Beacon Interval, Fragmentation Threshold, and RTS Threshold.
For example, change your Beacon to 50, your Fragmentation Threshold to 2304 and your RTS Threshold to 2305. This will improve the quality of the signal. You do this by accessing your Router through your web browser: type 192.168.1.1 (or whatever is the equivalent for your router.)
Well, I'm walking between the raindrops here. Good luck.
