TNS listener failure

Hi
I am a newbie to programming and to Oracle. I have Oracle SQL Developer installed on my machine. But I have having a hard time connecting to my database. I keep getting the fol error from the Database Connection window:
"Status: Failure-Listener refused the connection with the following error: ORA-12505, TNS listener does not know if SID given in connect description.."
I have checked that the information on the TNS names file is correct and that the SID matches the Listener.
I will appreciate any insights on this issue.
Here is my TNSname file content:

\network\admin\tnsnames.ora

Thank you for making that distinction. Well I ran the lsnrctl services at the command prompt and had the following results:

I am assuming that it is functioning properly.

  • Problems with tns/listener

    Hi,
i have a question regarding a problem i am experiencing in my development oracle env.
    i have 2 instances - oracle 11.2.01 and 11.2.0.3.(windows 2008 enterprise)
We were able to connect to both instances without any issues. Few days back we started noticing a strange issue.
We can connect to oracle 11.2.0.3 but not 11.2.0.1.
what happens is when i type in sqlplus username/[email protected] sqlplus connects after a while. It takes good 1.25 minutes.
and sqlplus username/[email protected] connects instantly.
One interesting thing is when i say sqlplus username/password, sqlplus instantly connects to oracle11.2.0.1. Well,
this is because i have my windows system variable defined oracle_sid=oracle11.2.0.1
my question is, does anybody know the reason this cna happen? is anybody familiar? it all started happening one fine evening last week.
The error messsage i see in alert logs are

by definition, you have two different ORACLE_HOME folders.
You should be running a single listener from the V11.2.0.3 directory; which depends upon the content of the PATH variable.
Are the OS Services for both the database & listener started & running now.
Unfortunately,  the ORA-12560 is somewhat of a catchall error that results from a handful of different causes.

  • ORA-12518: TNS:listener could not hand off client connection

    guys,
i have a problem here with the connection between a client host and a server database, using a new non-default listener LISTENER_BKP_1. The error showed is:
ORA-12518: TNS:listener could not hand off client connection
i had learned about this error here before, and i toke some notes as follows:

this means that it didn't reach the resource limites yet. What i can do to solve the problem ???
another important information is that connecting by the default listener LISTENER instead of the LISTENER_BKP_1 listener, the connection is completed successfully. There's enough SGA memory space too.
    Tks,

ORA-12518: TNS:listener could not hand off client connectionDon't do Oracle on Windows, so I'm not sure how the following relates to the Listener dealing with a dedicated server connection request on Linux/Unix.
On Linux/Unix, a dedicated server request means just that - a dedicated process has to be started to service that client. The Listener does it by using the parameters of the configured listener.ora service to execute +$ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle+. This process then starts up, and the Listener hands off the client connection for this process for servicing.
If there is a failure somewhere on this series of steps fail, the Listener throws the ORA-12518 exception. For example, the +$ORACLE_HOME+ has been incorrectly configured in listener.ora and it fails to execute and startup a dedicated server process.
And this relates to the underlying error you are seeing:
TNS-12518: TNS:listener could not hand off client connection
    TNS-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
    TNS-00530: Protocol adapter error
32-bit Windows Error: 2: No such file or directoryI think that the Listener on Windows uses the CreateRemoteThread() Win32 call to start up the server process thread. However, it needs a valid process identifier (of the existing Oracle instance) for this call - and thus needs to first identify the Oracle instance process. Could be that this step uses a ORACLE_HOME reference. And if that directory path is not valid, it is unable to identify the process id of the Oracle instance and thus unable to spawn a dedicated thread to service that client.

  • Tns listener with 10g grid control

i have a primary database on site A and a standby database on site B. yesterday the relationship between the 2 was alright with logs being shipped and applied. now my standby is down(probably due to a power failure) and each time i try to start it up i get the following:
Error: ORA-12505: TNS:listener does not currently know of SID given in connect descriptor
This is oracle database 10g rel2 and grid control 10g rel2 sitting on windows xp. I have checked all the listener.ora and tnsnames.ora and do not seem to find anything amiss.
what i need to know is:
1 - are there any issues relating to installing rel2 on win xp?
2 - when enterprise manager looks at the listener, is it the listener on the server with the primary or standby database?
3 - has anybody ever had this issue, if so, what was the resolution?
    sincerely
    simba

1 There are no more issues compared to other platforms
2 It looks at the listener on the host you specify in tnsnames.ora
3 Look: it is quite simple: too many people post here about common errors they can't seem to resolve themselves, because they don't use already available resources. If you would have simply searched this forum for ora-12505 you would already have read the solution.
Typically, there is no need to ask around whether someone already ran into this. You are not unique, you are not the only one with this problem, and there are FAQs.
ORA-12505 simply means in your tnsnames.ora you are using a SID which doesn't occur in listener.ora
And you would have known this if you would have simply looked up the error in the online documentation. But alas: most people around here never use the documentation, though the Forums Etiquette post (also no one reads) recommends otherwise.

  • ORA-12505, TNS:listener

Hello there, is it possible to connect Oracle Sql Developer to an Oracle Database via network? I have made attempts to connect via a network to a target database on a different computer and I get the error message
"Status : Failure -Listener refused the connection with the following error:ORA-12505, TNS:listener does not currently know of SID given in connect descriptorThe Connection descriptor used by the client..."
Please any clue on how to go about this?

How are you setting up the connection?
The message implies that one of the parameters you supplied is wrong (or possibly that the service is not running)
If you are using the basic tab, you need to supply host name, port number (probably 1521) and EITHER a SID or a SERVICE. If you have a local TNSNAMES.ORA look in there to see the relevant settings.

  • TNS Listener error while opening a Form !

    Hi all,
    I have installed Form/Reports 11gr2 with Weblogic 10.3.6 64-bit & database 11gr2.
All installations and configures are successful.
    But when I give URL address (servername:portno/forms/frmservlet?form=main) to open a form, it gives me following error;
ora-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor.
I searched on google, but didn't clear my error. I also checked Oracle services, all are started.
    So please guide me !
    Thanks/Regards.
    Dass

I never changed settings in tnsnames.ora, it is always as per default settings.  If required  now then let me know.
Please note that when I connect my form builder with databases, it is connected. But when I run my form it again show same error and open a dialog box for
    username,password & databases connection string.
I copied this file into "E:\Oracle\Middleware\asinst_1\config"  of form.
    Below is my tnsnames.ora file;

My guess is that the database service "HCM" is not up and running but not sure how to make up and running. Even I could not find it listed in the linux services list.
Note: Able to login sqlplus using "sqlplus sys/sys as sysdba" but failing to access database table as "select * from PSRECDEFN;"

    Hi Nicolas,
I have no luck and the error still persists.
I have set the "export ORACLE_SID=HCM" from root user and oracle user too.
I guess, I have already loaded database when I ran the "cd /opt/oracle/psft/vm
    ./oraclevm-template.sh"

  • TNS Listener: Entry Point Not Found

First I installed 8.1.6 Personal edition
    on my laptop (NT4 SP5):
    Folder: d:\orant.
    Oracle Home: DEFAULT_HOME
That went fine. I could connect to the database with SQLPLUS, DBA etc.
Then I tried to install Portal using:
    Folder: d:\9iAS
    Oracle Home: iSuites
Spent three days trying to get Portal to install ok. Have finally got through the installation of 9iAS (HTTP Server Only), which the Universal Installer claims to be successfull.
Started the Apache Server and tried to connect to the portal. I get the following error message:
    Proxy log On failed.

I have tried swicthing my primary Oracle Home using the Home Selector. Did not help.
Shouldn't the TNS listener be started, or?
    Any ideas what to check?

I have found the solution of my problem from Oracle9i Portal's Configuration Guide , the troubleshooting part. The document can be found in the Oralce9i Documentation web site.
The problem is that I set the incorrect information in my tnsnames.ora file when installing Oracle9i Portal.
The solution is set the host name, port number and SID in the tnsnames.ora file. This file is located at
    \Oracle_Home\network\admin\
Here is the example of the content in that file:

TNS-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
there was a entry in /etc/hosts which was directing primary.swapnilkambli.com to 127.0.01
This was because I created this OS from a Virtual box template wherein that entry was made.
I changed the /etc/hosts to refelct the true address and it worked!!

I created Stby DB with the minimum parameters required, so that I configure BROKER and see it magic, but badly stuck in this situation here. I have read many docs related to this..but can not fix it unfortunately.
Please guide me from your own experience as note ids, blogs are not helping me here...

    Hi,
    Your listener.ora file has SERVICE_NAME = dg_db2.domain whereas tnsnames.ora file has SERVICE_NAME = dg_db2.
Check in your database for exact service name and reflect the same in both the files.
    SQL> sho parameter service_names
Restart the listener and try connecting.
    Thank you!!

  • ORA-12504 tns listener was not given the SERVICE_NAME in CONNECT-DATA

    Hi
i installed a fresh oracle linux and installes 11.2.0 database server. the server works fine but i have a proplem to connect to the database from a windows 2008 r2
client. For the client connection i installed the oracle instantclient on the windows system. Now i want to configure the system dsn to connect to the oracle
    server like this
    data source description: vSphere 64
    description: ----
    TNS Service Name: VCDB
    user id: system
then i go to TEST connection
    Service Name: VCDB
    user name: system
    Password: mypassword
so i copied the tnsnames.ora from the server to the client
    then i get
ora-12504 tns listener was not given the SERVICE_NAME in CONNECT-DATA
here´s my tnsnames.ora from the client
    VCDB =

    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = vcdb.vmware)
i tested serveral config´s but nothing works. I can ping the server and also i cn telnet the server on port 1521. The listener on the server works fine

so i think on the server site everything is correct. How could i establish a connection from the windows client
to the linux database server. Or is ODBC the wrong method for this?
    Kind regards
    ACID25

    Hi,
Check the listener log and see if the connection information is logged (in this case with error)
If logged, then we are reaching the correct listener.
Then check tnsping VCDB works fine along with sqlplus connection through listener using VCDB as connect string.
If above both works, then issue can be isolated to ODBC configuration or setup issue.
In case even if the tnsping / sqlplus is failing to connect with VCDB, then worth taking a client sqlent trace at level 16 and listener trace at level 16 to analyse the issue further.
    Thanks,
    Sathya

    Thanks in advance.

Try on the server where it doesn't work:
    sqlplus ismdba/xxxxx@"(DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = torora60)(PORT = 1522))) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVICE_NAME = rman09na)))"
    or
    tnsping "(DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = torora60)(PORT = 1522))) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVICE_NAME = rman09na)))"
    (note the double quotes)
If that works then your tnsnames.ora is incorrect on that server.
