TNS Listener suddenly won't start

I have a database (10gR2) that has been running for a couple of years, but all of a sudden I couldn't get to it. Then, when I went to that server and tried to start the service it wouldn't start. The machine is a Dell running Server2003 R2. The service error says:
The Oracle[instance] TNSListener service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service.
Anyone ever seen this one before?

Here are the results of lsnrctl status

  • TNS Listener Service won't start after upgrading server from NT to 2000

I am new to Oracle and have worked my way through downloading and installing Oracle Enterprise Edition on an NT 4.0 SP6a server and I believe the installation was successful--I was able to run the Oracle Enterprise Manager successfully and I browsed the Oracle services in NT and they all appeared to be working.
I upgraded NT to Windows 2000 Server and Service Pack 2 yesterday and after that I am unable to run Oracle Enterprise Manager and have noticed that the TNS Listener will not start. Actually it starts and immediately stops. It does not cause any messages in the Event Viewer.
Any help on how to proceed would be very gratefully received.
I am a database administrator with a school district and are evaluating/comparing Oracle vs. SQL Server 2000 for creating a data warehouse.
    Thanks!

    Srinivasa and Allen,
Thank you very much for your replies. I tried the lsnrctl show connect_timeout command and got a message that connect_timeout was an invalid parameter. Is that true of 9i? However, I used the help show command and tried some of the other parameters and the error messages said something about not being able to locate the host. At that point I recalled that at the same time I was upgrading the server to Windows 2000 I also changed the name of the server from MISNT to just MIS.
At that point I renamed the server back to MISNT and after rebooting, the TNS listener works fine. I do want to change the server name back to MIS. It appears there is a configuration file somewhere that has the host name in it that I will need to change. It makes me wonder if there are any other places where I am going to need to change this before I'm done. Will I be better off to just completely uninstall Oracle, change the server name and then reinstall?
    Thanks!
    Rick

  • 4th gen. iPod touch suddenly won't start up again?

Hey all, hopefully someone can help me out.
My iPod was working perfectly up until an hour ago, and for some reason won't start up again. I've looked at the various tips, holding the power button for 10 seconds, but it still won't start up. Help would be greatly appreciated!
    -Mike

I have the same problem. I bought it 5 months ago, and just used it when I was at home. I take very good care of it. No accidental damage or misuse. But it suddenly can not start up. So I sent my ipod touch to Apple store. To my disappointed, they can not do anything. They do not want to take their responsibility.
Below is the email they sent to me.
Thank you for choosing AppleCare Service.
Your IPOD TOUCH (4TH GENERATION) has been inspected by Apple technicians, who have determined that it has been subjected to accidental damage or misuse, which is not covered by the warranty, the AppleCare Protection Plan, or other Apple repair program. Therefore your original product is being returned to you unrepaired
    So ridiculous and irresponsible
    Hope someone can help me.

  • Photoshop Elements 4 suddenly won't start up

I last used Elements on 7th July. It was fine. Since 21st july, it won't start - goes through all the brushes loading etc but then quits.
    I have:
Removed all Adobe programmes, prefs etc using AppZapper
Cleaned up using Adobe's maccs3clean script
Repaired disk permissions (a huge long list there, why?)
Re-installed Elements 4.0 between some of these stages.
No luck! It still crashes at the same point. Could I try reverting to an earlier system state via TimeCapsule, if so how do I do that?
Or, re-install the OS (my Leopard version would be quite old now) and do a total update?
    Advice very welcome,

  • Macbook Pro working fine then, after shutting lid, suddenly won't start up

I've been working on my Macbook Pro with no problems. I've been carrying it around with me today, never turning it off but, obviously, closing it. Then plugging in again and continuing with no problems at all. This evening I was working on it, again all fine, when I shut lid whilst it was still on (as I always do) but when I opened it again the screen is black and it won't start up again. It seems like it's trying to start (the light keeps flashing and the fan makes sounds) but then it doesn't start. The power adaptor light is green. I've tried plugging in to different sockets. I've tried starting up without the battery, and also taking the battery out and putting it in again. What could be wrong and what should I do? Really urgently need help!
Many thanks in advance if you're able to help,
    Lisa
Ps: I've written that my OS is X10.5 but I can't remember what it is really and because I can't turn my computer on I can't check. It was bought early 2008 and I haven't updated the OS since then...

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Your early 2008 MacBook Pro may have developed this problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
You'll need to take it in to an Apple Store to be tested--Apple has a special test they can run to diagnose this problem. If this is what is wrong, you will get a free repair.
Your Mac originally shipped with Leopard, which is 10.5, and if you haven't upgraded the OS, that is what you have.
    Good luck!

I've done disk permission repairs, as well as cleared the cache. The problem persists in other logins. The apps don't quit abnormally, they simply bounce once in the dock, then go away.

    Check that user's Application folder.
Do they have another Office on there?
Either an older version, or the Office Test Drive?

  • Shake suddenly won't start

    Hi there!
I'm new to these boards, and to Shake, but I've been learning quite a bit over the last few weeks. Unfortunately, I've just run into a bit of a snag while working on some composites for a small project that I'm working on. When I click on the Shake icon in the dock, or in my applications folder, it just won't start. It does, however, start if I go through terminal - which is confusing to me.
Anyway, I had been adding some freeware macros to Shake that I recently got from highend3d.com, and after figuring out where the files should go, and getting the first one to work fine, this little issue cropped up. I was hoping that someone might have a brilliant answer before I go through the process of uninstall/reinstall.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks a lot!
    Rob

    Ahh, okay...sorry...
I opened Console, and then clicked on the Shake icon, and here is the message that Console displayed:
    7/30/08 6:23:20 PM [0x0-0x69069].com.apple.shake[597] error: unknown function -psn0430185
    7/30/08 6:23:20 PM com.apple.launchd[84] ([0x0-0x69069].com.apple.shake[597]) Exited with exit code: 1
I really have no idea what that means...but maybe you or someone else here does? Thanks again for the help!

  • Firefox suddenly won't start. I open it on my Mac, I see the Apple icon and Firefox where a menu bar should be, but that's it. My only option is to Force Quit. Firefox windows won't open at all. Any advice?

As you can read above, that's it. The only thing I can think of is that I did a Microsoft update and then my Firefox stopped working. It won't start up. Windows and tabs won't open. It's completely unresponsive. I have uninstalled and reinstalled new and old Firefox, yet I have the same problem.

  • Compressor suddenly won't start a project

I read in a post that it may be necessary to "Reset background processing" if one is experiencing slow process speeds. So I did just that and now when I submit a project the process never starts and the time remaining remains at -:--:--
    Wassup?

    It seems to have been an issue of a number of projects running in the background, most of which finished successfully by this morning. To answer your question though;
    - My source footage is all QT files originally shot at 1920x1080p and then exported out of FCP via the Quicktime Movie export tab.
    - They are stored internally on a separate drive just for video footage
    - I am not sure where I am "encoding the source to"
    - The destination is YouTube
    - On "This computer"
    - Version 3.5.2
While these latest uploads do look a bit better I am still very frustrated with the quality of the video once uploaded. I have read numerous discussions on YouTube uploads and have followed what seems to be sage advice yet my results are less than stellar, and I'm being paid for stellar, not mediocre. Here's an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-B5ObenfLjs
The opening shot in particular is grainy and pixelated and it just drives me nuts.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • Firefox suddenly won't start and I can't open the profile manager; what else should I do?

Firefox was working. When I went to re-open it the wheel spun, stopped, and then nothing. I search online and it said to create a new profile by running firefox.exe -p. But nothing happened. The support article said that perhaps another version of Firefox was running in the background but not visible and to reboot. I did. No difference. I'm stuck. What else can I do?

I tried Safe Mode, but apparently you need Firefox to start regularly and then hit the menu button to get it to start in Safe Mode next time. Unfortunately I cannot get Firefox to start at all.
I'm going to try to save the profile and then re-install Firefox. However, the "Back up and restore" instructions on how to do this are a bit vague. For example, it tells you how to find your profile file by doing a search. But on my computer the search comes up empty (turns out on my computer the file name has the word "local" in the middle of the phrase given in the instructions.

  • TS1367 My old PowerBook G4 with early OSX suddenly won't start up. No startup noises, etc.

I cannot start my old powerbook g4. It makes no sounds - drive, etc. It was working fine one day, then I left it dormant/off for about a week, but plugged in to transformer to keep it "alive". Upon trying to start up again, nothing.
The battery test button initiates the first light blinking rapidly for a few seconds, second light barely visible  - no other lights flash. Power cabe and transformer are delivering yellow-green glow when plugged into the mac.
    Battery replacement?
    Power transformer ?

Find a local Apple Authorized Service Center who can help you out, tell them first before they do anything whether your data is backed up, and they'll take whatever measures you need:

  • Premiere suddenly won't start

I've had a very strange thing happen, I was working on a project in PPro 5.5 when suddenly Premiere became unresponsive and eventually crashed.  Ok, that's happened with PPro since version 1 in my experience so I just restarted the program.  Well, I got the loading screen, it went through it's "loading x" as it did all the stuff it normally does then suddenly the loading screen goes away and I'm at the desktop.  I try again with the same result, this time I'm monitoring the Task Manager.  Adobe Premiere Pro.exe appears in the processes, then suddenly it vanishes as the loading screen does.
Hmm, I then tried to reboot the computer.  After the reboot I again tried to launch PPro with the exact same results.  At this point I attempted to reinstall PPro in case my install had been corrupted, this yielded no results and the same problem persisted.  I tried Encore and Media Encoder and both of them work perfectly.
I'm about to attempt an uninstall of PPro and my MXO2 and reinstall but I'm not all that hopeful.  Has anyone seen this before?  The thing that gets me is I was working on a project before this happened.  If all else fails I guess I can format and reinstall Windows but I'd really rather avoid that extreme a step.  And of course this happens when I'm on a deadline... things never go wrong when you've plenty of time to work through problems.
Oh, I've run a virus scan (Avira AV) and come up negative.
A few specs on the  machine:
Dual Xeon 3.47GHz 6 core CPU's, 12 cores total, 24 logical cores total

24GB registered RAM in triple channel mode
Win7 Pro 64 bit with all updates
    Matrox MXO2 LE capture/playback
Nvidia GTX 580 4GB video card
Intel LSI MegaRaid SATA raid controller
7TB RAID 5 array on the RAID card
Installed software consists of PPro CS 5.5 suite, Avira anti virus and Firefox web browser.  Beyond that it's a clean install

Generally Preferences are liable to currput... Caches too..
So whenever you experience problems with any app, resort to some householding and rid yourself of
preferences and caches and other files which the application is relying on...
    Glad it all worked out

my brand new iMac has worked for 3 weeks, then all of the sudden won't start. It shows the apple icon and the spinning wheel but never gets past that screen.
