TNS Listener wont start

Hi,
I have Oracle 11g installed on Win. Vista Home Premium edition. I have set the "Startup" Type for "OracleOraDb11g_home1TNSListener" service to "Manual" and when I try to start it, I get a pop-up saying:
"The OracleOraDb11g_home1TNSListener service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."
P.S.: I do not get this error message every time. At times it works fine.

Thanks for the response guys, but no luck yet.
I know the problem is with listener.ora file
The "Host" is assigned an IP and since my laptop keeps connecting to different wireless connections I am getting different IP.
Ah, a critical detail.
Go back and re-read the Installation Guide. Pay particular attention to the section on installing a loopback adapter.
And remember that no oracle product is certified for any "home" flavor of any release of Windows.
To combat that I modified the Hosts file under "C:/Windows/system32/drivers/etc/" and have added a line 10.10.10.10 <My computer name>
But even then listener.ora file's Hosts attribute points to my initial IP.So what's stopping you from changing it?

I have found the solution of my problem from Oracle9i Portal's Configuration Guide , the troubleshooting part. The document can be found in the Oralce9i Documentation web site.
The problem is that I set the incorrect information in my tnsnames.ora file when installing Oracle9i Portal.
The solution is set the host name, port number and SID in the tnsnames.ora file. This file is located at
    \Oracle_Home\network\admin\
Here is the example of the content in that file:

    Hello!
    Thank you very much!
    Even that is the question.
    1) If I have selected "ok" during the installation and no further values selected, will SAPINST check whether the Port 1527 is allocated by the first SAP System and create the second Port 1528?
    2) Do I have one TNS Listener with two file entries or two TNS Listener?

  • Listener (and database instance) does not starts up automatically: ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor

Hi at all.... I'm a newbie with database oracle.,
    I have the follow problem:
I installed Oracle Database 11g R2 XE on my guest operating system CentOS 6.5.
I have changed  the hostname in my SO CentOS (where is installed oracle 11g R2 XE) after installation was completed successfully.
-) Before and during installation the hostname was localhost.
-) After installation I changed the hostname in VMCentOS
From the moment I changed the hostname, nothing starts up automatically. In particular, the listener and the database instance does not starts up automatically.
When I starts up the listener manually and I try to connect to database instance with SQLPLUS i get this error:
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
I think that the problem is due to the changed hostname because I, for testing and debugging purpose, re-installed a new OS CentOS virtual machine, re-installed oracle database 11g and  I have not got that problem. The database instance and the listener starts up automatically!
Can any one tell me if maybe the problem is related to the hostname changed? ... and Why?
P.S.: After changed the hostname I have also modified the listener.ora and the tnsnames.ora by modifying the HOST with the correct hostname.

  • TNS Listener Service won't start after upgrading server from NT to 2000

I am new to Oracle and have worked my way through downloading and installing Oracle Enterprise Edition on an NT 4.0 SP6a server and I believe the installation was successful--I was able to run the Oracle Enterprise Manager successfully and I browsed the Oracle services in NT and they all appeared to be working.
I upgraded NT to Windows 2000 Server and Service Pack 2 yesterday and after that I am unable to run Oracle Enterprise Manager and have noticed that the TNS Listener will not start. Actually it starts and immediately stops. It does not cause any messages in the Event Viewer.
Any help on how to proceed would be very gratefully received.
I am a database administrator with a school district and are evaluating/comparing Oracle vs. SQL Server 2000 for creating a data warehouse.
    Thanks!

    Srinivasa and Allen,
Thank you very much for your replies. I tried the lsnrctl show connect_timeout command and got a message that connect_timeout was an invalid parameter. Is that true of 9i? However, I used the help show command and tried some of the other parameters and the error messages said something about not being able to locate the host. At that point I recalled that at the same time I was upgrading the server to Windows 2000 I also changed the name of the server from MISNT to just MIS.
At that point I renamed the server back to MISNT and after rebooting, the TNS listener works fine. I do want to change the server name back to MIS. It appears there is a configuration file somewhere that has the host name in it that I will need to change. It makes me wonder if there are any other places where I am going to need to change this before I'm done. Will I be better off to just completely uninstall Oracle, change the server name and then reinstall?
    Thanks!
    Rick

  • 'ORA-12500: TNS: Listener failed to start a dedicated server process'

    Hi,
While connecting from one database to another users are getting the below error when they are giving a select statement, its taking around 30 minutes and showing
'ORA-12500: TNS: Listener failed to start a dedicated server process'...
    What could be the issue...
    Thanks,
    Kr.

If database to which they are trying to connect is running, then check listener.log ($ORACLE_HOME/network/log).
Probably there is not enough system resources - check opsystem logs as well (on unix /var/log or /var/adm) on windows look at events.
Look into db alert.log as well.

  • DB 9i - TNS-12500: TNS:listener failed to start a dedicated server process

    hi all,
I have a problem with the following configuration oracle 9.2.0.1 (32bits) on Win server 2003 - enterprise x64 edition - 10GM of RAM.
I installed DB without problem, run server, started listener - seems all is fine. But when trying a remote connection, "listener failed to start a dedicated server process"

I ask You, because I am not too familiar with Windows environment and very likely I forget/miss something obvious (in this env).
    Thanks in advance

I solved installing upgrade to 9.2.0.8.
    Now It's all OK.

  • Again: ORA-12504: TNS:listener was not given the SERVICE_NAME...

    Hi Guys,
I got this already discussed error and I am sorry, to start a new topic, but I just have no idea what to do else.
    I have oracle11g - 32 bit running on my Windows 7 64 bit machine.
The database-server is running fine according to the Database-Control Webinterface.
    Connecting with SQLPlus also works
Now my application tries to connect to
    Server: localhost
    Database: orcl
    User: System
    PW: myPw
    I get: ORA-12504: TNS:listener was not given the SERVICE_NAME in CONNECT_DATA
I was reading many threads here and so I tried to configure the standard-listener using the netmanager with an additional SID named "orcl" which results in this listener.ora:

What else could I check? What else could be the reason, that it doesn't work.
I appreciate any help, suggestins, hints... :)
    Thanks
    Andy

  • TNS Listener error while opening a Form !

    Hi all,
    I have installed Form/Reports 11gr2 with Weblogic 10.3.6 64-bit & database 11gr2.
All installations and configures are successful.
    But when I give URL address (servername:portno/forms/frmservlet?form=main) to open a form, it gives me following error;
ora-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor.
I searched on google, but didn't clear my error. I also checked Oracle services, all are started.
    So please guide me !
    Thanks/Regards.
    Dass

I never changed settings in tnsnames.ora, it is always as per default settings.  If required  now then let me know.
Please note that when I connect my form builder with databases, it is connected. But when I run my form it again show same error and open a dialog box for
    username,password & databases connection string.
I copied this file into "E:\Oracle\Middleware\asinst_1\config"  of form.
    Below is my tnsnames.ora file;
