Tnsname resolve failed after performing an restore using rman
I create an full database backup using rman and I want to perform an restore on another server. Steps are as follows.
1. Install the same release of oracle database and apply the same release of patches in the testing server.
2. Create an instance with the same name of original database.
3.Perform the restore using rman.
4.Create an spfile from pfile.
5.Add an new tempfile then delete the old one.
6. Shutdown the instance and restart it.
7. reconfigure the listner.
8. reconfigure the tns.
In this step it fails,saying that "TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor",but if I change the servername to the original server name,it succeed.

I had taken backup three time say backup1 after few transaction backup2 and after few transactions backup3 using RMAN. RMAN no catalog
Now we want to recover database using backup1.
provide the steps to recover the database using backup1Hi,
You said you have taken the Backup. Which type of backup either level 0 or level 1 (incremental backups - differential or cumulative). Next type of backups - either image copies or backups. If backups are taken then we can try out to restore specific files from the backup sets - I am not sure on that.
You have to provide the DB Version. ??
What is the need for going for First Backup only... what is the need ??
Does you know appropriate time , if you use the flashback then we can use that.

How to restore using increment backup after full backup restore in RMAN?
Hi All,
We have a files of full backup of database after turning on the Archive log.
And after that, daily incremental backup is taken.
Now, i want to restore the the database into a new machine using both files of full and incremental backups. Can anybody give me script for restore of full backup and after that restore of incremental backup?
Thanks,
Praveen.Praveen,
>>
In my case, i have 2 sets of backups. One is full backup and other is incremental backup. In order to keep the restored database upto date, i need to restore the full backup and then restore incremental backup. Now, i got any idea how to restore using full backup. My doubt is how to update the restored database with incremental backup also?
>>
Restore always looks for level 0 backup, not the incremental backups.
Incremental backups comes in picture during recovery.
During Recovery, Oracle looks for incremental backups, if exists, it will do the recovery with the incremental backups, if no incremental backups available, then, it will look for archived logs.
Therefore, incremental backups never used during restore, they are used only during the recovery.

Backup/restore using RMAN with no catalog
Hi all,
Can someone tell me if this is correct:
I have two identical machines, same configuration and same file structure, everything is the same.
On machine A, I have a 9.2.0.7 database running. I take a hot backup and try to restore it on machine B.
Note: I am using RMAN for backup/restore whith no catalog.
This is how I perform backup on machine A:
ALLOCATE CHANNEL C1 TYPE DISK;
SQL 'ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT';
BACKUP INCREMENTAL LEVEL=0 CUMULATIVE format '/backup/level0_%u' BACKUP CURRENT CONTROLFILE format '/backup/control_primary' FORCE;
SQL 'ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT';
BACKUP ARCHIVELOG ALL format '/backup/archivelogs_%s_%t';
On machine B, here is how I perform restore:
SET DBID 1221334455;
RESTORE CONTROLFILE FROM '/backup/control_primary';
ALTER DATABASE MOUNT;
RESTORE DATABASE VALIDATE;
RESTORE DATABASE;
Recover database;
Thanks,You forgot to restore the spfile or pfile on the second node to go to nomount state.
OR
You can use RMAN Duplicate to do this.
Regards

Can I restore a oracle database with a different name using RMAN.
Say, I backup a database named orcl. Now I wanted to restore this database with a different name. Is this possible? If yes, can some one guide me through the appropriate document?
Thank you,
Santhosh< Can I restore this Backup on to a database with a different name ...
You even have to do this, if duplicated database belongs to the same ORACLE_HOME, otherwise it could be the same name (although the databases still have different DBIDs).
DUPLICATE TARGET DATABASE TO <name>

Vista will not boot/install after performing a restore to factory settings on satellite l305
I have a satellite l305 that i bought new thru walmart.com about a year & a half ago, and for the past few months it seems like there are more & more issues with this pc that are causing it not to work properly-everything from drivers failing-or even disappearing, in some cases-to crashing into a blue screen everytime i insert a micro sd card into the slot.. My sound drivers are gone & even after i THOUGHT i downloaded them again, they still won't install or even recognize that they are there and then yesterday it suddenly stopped being able to fully load some of my fave games that i play daily.. I have tried EVERY SINGLE SUGGESTION in EVERY article, forum, help site, etc.,that i could find & even tried to get help over the phone from a pc tech here locally, and nothing has been able to fix my issues. I have done so many system restores from so many different restore points, installed updates, uninstalled updates, tried to install new drivers, rolled back drivers, started in safe mode to do diagnostics checks, entered BIOS & checked EVERY setting, reset all settings to default, checked error logs, etc., etc., etc...I have even completely disassembled my entire laptop & checked all wiring, fuses, etc., made sure everything was working, etc., So, finally yesterday I decided that it's gotta be something to do with a tech issue-probably with my vista home premium OS that came pre-installed at purchase, so i thought it best to just go ahead & go into the back up & restore & back up all my files onto an external hd using the file transfer wizard option inside the restore center, and then proceed into restoring the pc to it's factory, or "out of box", state. And i assumed i covered my bases by saving the back up-just in case...ohhh no-not the case at all!
It did't even occur tp me to that i might need an actual BOOT disk for vista after the fact. I just assumed that "out of box" meant just how it originally came-WITH vista pre-installed & ready to set up-like it did the day i bought it! i also was under the assumption that, isnce it never asked for a product key or anyting to activate vista then, that it wouldn't need one now either. But anyway, so this is where i'm at now-after i did the factory restore & turned it back on, it said to wait while windows finishes installing-but it never finished, then finally about an hour later, it said that windows was unexpectedly interrupted during installation & did not complete, and for me to restart pc to try install again. But after i did that, it was the same thing over & over. it NEVER installs!
So then i decided to go ahead & "restore windows using back up image" that i created on my external hd prior to the factory restore, thinking that it would just kinda pu **bleep** all back, but thats not working either. it recognizes the drive, and takes me to a menu where i can actually even view all the files on the drive and even tho they are known by my pc to be back up files, it still won't associate them to being back up files to MY PC!! I even got desperate enough to find a site that claimed to offer a free vista boot disk in the form of an iso image that i burned onto cd & tried to boot from as well. That actually took me to an install screen for windows & all the way to where it asks for product key-which DID NOT come locatedon any sticker anywhere on my laptop, and because they DID NOT include any OS utility, install, or boot disks with the purchase of my laptop, i don't know what the product key is OR where else i might be able to find that info, and i WILL NOT pay for ANOTHER ONE, just because they were too lazy or cheap to send the disks with the pc! so i tried to skip this step till later, but when i skip it, it shows anpther error saying that install was terminated & could not finish install & if i wish to continue, for me to restart my pc & re-attempt install..WHAT IS GOING NE WITH THIS AND WHAT CAN I POSSIBLY DO TO JUST BE ABLE TO USE MY LAPTOP AGAIN?? HELP ME PLEASE SOMEONE!!Hi,
I do not really understand... Did you made a backup before restore to factory settings? And did you copy all backup files to an external device? If not, the data is gone!
Why? Restoryng to factory does not mean a reinstallation. It means to fill the whole harddisk with an image of the first (factory) installation. All other data will be destroyd! Other partitions are deleted and normally you find only one big partition - the whole hdd.
If you have a complete backup on external drive and it is corrupted during restore, try to open the files manually. Maybe you can restore some single files.
Good luck
kind regards

27" iMac Firewire Port fails after 300 days of use
I had to take my 27" iMac (purchased in 2012) to the "Genius" bar today because the firewire port failed.
Prior to this:
My Apogee Duet Firewire Sound Interface has given me all kinds of errors with the iMac. I wrote emails to Apogee complaining about the Firewire issues and they gave me a long list of possible fixes, all of which did absolutely nothing. Apogee claims that the problem is Apple's, but when I connected a MOTU Traveler to the firewire port it performed flawlessly. Many people had complained online about the awful performance of the Firewire Duet with Lion OSX so I wrote back to Apogee demanding that they replace the device with their newer USB "Duet 2" and they chose to ignore my email. So I went back to dealing with the intermittent cutting out of the Duet which is only remedied by either restarting the machine or unplugging & reconnecting the Duet.
2 days ago:
The Apogee Duet stops working (like so many times before), so I unplug the Apogee Firewire 400-to-800 cable and this time when I reconnect, it starts rapidly blinking and clicking, so I quickly shut the iMac down. After a waiting for a few minutes I plug the Duet in and it's dead -no lights & no click. To determine if I'd just killed my Duet, I plugged it into my 2009 Macbook with a Firewire 400 cable and the Duet works. So I think.."Maybe it was the Apogee FW400/800 cable". Next day I bought a new Firewire 400/800 Cable and connected the Duet to the iMac and I still got absolutely nothing. So I booked an appointment at the Genius Bar.
Today:
The helpful gentleman there quickly discovered that the main-board needed replacement because the "newer" iMacs have all the I/O stuff attached to the motherboard. It would have cost me 800 bucks with out a warranty. While I was there, I tested my original Apogee Firewire 400/800 cable with a Macbook pro and it worked fine, ruling out the possibility that my cable could have caused the Firewire port to fail. Lastly, I asked him to connect a Thunderbolt-to-Firewire Adapter to my iMac and - yes - the Apogee Duet worked fine through the Thunderbolt Port.
In Conclusion,
I'm glad that they are going to repair this problem but it would appear I really have no choice but to extend my "Apple Care" since, in my experience, the Firewire port can spontaneously fail. As a full-time musician it's lucky for me this happened while it was still under warranty, otherwise I probably would have just bought the Thunderbolt-to-Firewire Adapter and hope the Thunderbolt ports last longer than the firewire did.
Has anyone else had their main-board replaced due to Port Failure?Not because of Firewire, but yes, my 2007 iMac had to have extensive things replaced twice under extended AppleCare.
I personally think $2,000 dollar items should come with more than a one year warranty, unless you expect them to die shortly after a year.
Didn't need any warranty on my Quadra/630, still runs every day, they don't make Macs like they used to. -
HT5097 How do I find my files after a TC restore using Migration Assistant?
How do I find my TC backup?
My difficulties started with my MacBook Pro going totally dead. Took it to the Apple Store, where they identified a problem with the RAM. They fixed it, and also reinstalled Lion, but without my applications - Pages, iPhoto, my documents etc.
When I got back home, I used Migration Assistant, which I found in Utilities, connected to the Time Capsule with an Ethernet cable, and it said at the end that it had transferred all my info. During the process I had to create another ID. I added a "1" to my old id, of course...easiest thing to do....and then I changed the Login procedure so I could switch to that user ID. I'm not sure that worked, because when my MacBook Pro went to sleep, I found the original icon, rather than the one for the name1 name. So that may be part of the problem, but I don't know.
Anyway, then I entered Time Machine, but all that is there is the last few days/hours of activity.
I don't know much about computers, but I think that the new name1 user ID and the restored data may be linked somewhere and if I could just find it perhaps this would get resolved.
I can see the applications now, but when I look for, for example, Pages documents, there is nothing there. Ditto for iPhoto. For iPhoto I also tried file>import, which brought in some old files from MobileMe, but not the photos I had on my MacBook.
I would prefer not to have the name/name1 and just have everything back as it was, but I don't know how to do that either.
Hope someone can help me! Many thanks!!!Never mind! I finally figured out - duh - that if I logged out and then logged in under the new name1 ID, I could find everything! HOOORAY!

Hard Drive continuously fails after performing clean installs.
Recently I've been having the issue of my Macbook running incredibly slow, when I reform Disk Utility, I get errors such as "invalid record count" and "invalid node structure. I have never allowed these repairs to finish as I've only read that these errors are rarely fixed by disk utility. So I've erased the hard drive and performed clean installs several times. Each time I start up OSX after an install, it will run smoothly for a period of time (it is never the same), the computer will start to slow down again, to the point where I cannot even operate it, and Disk Utility starts finding the same errors.
I have run the Apple Hardware Test, and no problems have been found. So I'm at a loss.
Right now I've just erased the hard drive again, and I'm not going any farther until I see if I can get any help.
I'm starting to think it's just a lost cause.You might give this a try:
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
However, do not overlook the possibility you have a bad hard drive that needs to be replaced. If the above doesn't prove helpful, then I would consider replacing the hard drive. -
Mail import fails after Time Machine restore
Running 10.9.3 on a MacBook Pro and just replaced the hard drive. I did a Time Machine restore and Mail is now hanging part way through the import. I saw a number of threads on this issue and and fixed permissions and deleted the Envelope Index files. Still no luck. I'm unsure what else I can do to isolate the problem. Is there anything that I can restore that would not require Mail to re-import?
Thanks,

Ok so I finally had to reformat after 5 years. I had backed up my itunes the last couple of years about once a month. I loaded all the backed up disks. When I plug my ipod into my pc itunes wants to erase my ipod and mirror my itunes with all the lame back up libraries. Is there any way to mirror my ipod instead of my ipod mirroring itunes?
Sounds like you didn't backup the itunes library database file. For the future, it is named
iTunes Library.itl
Now, since you don't have that file, your best bet is to get a 3rd-party ipod manager to get everything off your ipod. See page 3 of this article.

Hi Guys
I am practicing RMAN utility for backup and recovery. I have created rman catalog user on my system tablespace. I deleted my system tablespace from my oracle database.
I started my oracle database it gave error ORA-01157: cannot identify/lock data file and ORA-01110: data file 1 . Now when I connect to rman using target user/pwd@orcl catalog user/pwd@orcl
it saying : RMAN 00571, RMAN 00569, RMAN 00554 initialization of internal recovery manager failed and RMAN 04004 error from recovery catalog database : ORA 01033
oracle initialization or shutdown in progress.
I tried other lots of option but i think since I lost system tablespace rman is not starting as I declared rman users default tablespace as system.
Please Guidehİ,
Create a user to hold the recovery catalog. This should be on a separate server to any databases you are planning to backup.
http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/9i/recovery-manager-9i.php#CreateRecoveryCatalog
and you should connect like below
export ORACLE_SID=YOURDBSID
rman target / catalog user/pwd@rmancatalogdb

DUPLICATE fails after recovery due to ORA-01861
I issued the following duplicate command:
DUPLICATE TARGET DATABASE TO dev2 UNTIL TIME '2006-09-16 04:30:00';It actually goes through the 8-hour task of restoring datafiles and recovering from archive logs. It then creates the control file and then executes the SET NEWNAME commands when it fails with this error
executing command: SET NEWNAME

ORA-01861: literal does not match format stringThe only possible cause I can think of is that, as of 16 Sep 2006, I hadn't yet set my NLS_DATE_FORMAT parameter. It is now set (to YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS) so that I can specify the date format for my PITR duplication.
Does my diagnosis make any sense? If I unset NLS_DATE_FORMAT and say UNTIL TIME '16-SEP-06' does that mean '16-SEP-06 00:00:00'? That would work for me as well. However since each failed attempt means 8 hours lost I'd like to know that kind of thing ahead of time, and if my diagnosis is even correct.Normally we do have two senarios while cloning. One, you clone to an existing instance by removing the control and datafiles. Two, take a copy of spfile from target DB and clone to auxiliary DB. In the first case there can be chances that NLS is different than your target. But in second case it will be same because you are cloning from one parent setting.
In your case if I am not wrong it was the first scenario ( This scenario I normally face in my UAT database clones when cloning from production). Its always better to keep same NLS but some situations u cant do that. In that case you can use “to_date” and it’s a very well proven method.
And your question why your clone failed after all the restore operation. I personally think the database when tried to reset your logs after restoration it found format difference and shouted about that. As simple as that.
