Tnsnames or OID

I'm considering the use of tnsnames for simplicity of installation and ease of maintenance in my environment, rather than staying with OID. There are about 300 desktops, and 6 Oracle servers to maintain with oracle connections to the IIS webserver on the Microsoft platforms.
The IIS admin tells me when I change tnsnames, IIS has to be rebooted since it doesn't recognize the connection string changes in the tnsnames update. I've never seen this
type of problem before, does anyone have experience with using tnsnames for connection to the IIS server and if any parameters, connection pools, or config has to be done on
the IIS side to allow for changes to the tnsnames file?
Thanks in advance,
Kim

  • After loading grocery.ldif, LDAP won't start up

    I loaded OID 3.0.1 on an existing Oracle 9i rel 1 patch 3 DB, W2K machine.
    I setup Oracle Context and imported tnsnames into OID and was able to log in with sqlplus using LDAP instead of tnsnames.
    I ran grocery.sql from sqlplus to load tables.
    When I ran grocery.ldif, it said it completed successfully in the command window, but the oidldapd.exe process started running 100%.
    I left for a while and came back and decided to reboot to stop it.
    Now when I start it, the 2 ldap processes are running but one's memory footprint is smaller than usual. 7.5k and 6.4K. I remember one being in the 10-13K range. I don't think its fully starting. When I try to log into Directory Manager, the connecting box never goes away and it hangs waiting for ldap to reply.
    Is there a way to clear out the grocery.ldif info so LDAP server will come on again?

    Okay found the answer, When I added LDAP in sqlnet.ora like this
    names.directory_path = (LDAP, TNSNAMES, HOSTNAME)
    LDAP server would hang during startup. When I take LDAP out, it comes up fine.
    After its running, I put LDAP back in sqlnet.ora and connect using the grocery JSP demo project.
    Is there a way I can run LDAP, ORacle 9i DB, and Jdeveloper on the same box without having to swap LDAP name in and out of sqlnet.ora?
    I have all my tnsnames imported into LDAP, it looks like LDAP needs to resolve the Database using tnsnames before it can completely come up.

  • A few of questions concerning the Oracle Client

    Hi
    Firstly, I'd just like to say that what I know about Oracle could be written on a very small postage stamp that had somehow been torn in half and then in half again.
    Apologies for the waffle...
    One of my roles within our organisation, is to create and deploy application using Novell ZENWorks to our users who will shortly be moving to a purely Windows XP SP2 environment.
    Q1-Is the Oracle 8 client fully supported by XP SP2?
    Our organisation runs multiple Oracle DB's and up until now, separate application objects have been created for each DB with that DB's settings in it's TNSNAMES.ORA file which is pushed out along with that application object. The trouble is that some users need to access more than one DB which means that they sometimes have multiple copies of the Oracle Client installed, using different TNSNAMES.ORA files depending on what DB they want to connect to.
    Q2-Can I either carry out one install of say the Oracle 9 client and have one TNSNAMES.ORA file with all the DB settings in? Or even better still, can I install the client on one of the shared volumes on the server (I realise that I'd have to copy certain files to the workstation) and then get all the workstations to run the client from there?
    Q3-Our preferred method of deploying applications is to use MSI's, but for some reason Oracle only supply some kind of primative and cumbersome response file system which I've found often gives random results depending on what the weather is like. Is there a better way of getting the client onto the workstations without having to mess around editing RSP's?
    Sorry for posing such potentially dumb questions
    James

    Q1-Is the Oracle 8 client fully supported by XP SP2?AFAIK Oracle 8 products are no longer supported. Use 9i client instead.
    Anyway here is link to certification matrix: http://www.oracle.com/technology/support/metalink/index.html
    Or even better still, can I install the client on one of the shared volumes on the server...I guess this won't working. Install Client on each machine and share only tnsnames.ora, or you could resolving tnsnames from OID (LDAP) server.
    Is there a better way of getting the client onto the workstations without having to mess around editing RSP's?You could make manual install and record the response file. That responsfile you could use on other machines. You don't need edit anything. Sorry, I can't see anything primitive and cumbersome on RSP. You can choose manual installation or using responsfile, there is not other option.

  • TOAD/OID and TNSNAMES.ORA

    We had OID installed on a trial basis here to replace tnsnames.ora files on servers, laptops and desktops. We have since uninstalled and removed all files and registry entries of the application from the server where it was installed.
    I had my laptop set up to use OID and I removed my TNSNAMES.ORA file. I have since removed all files from my laptop that had anything to do with OID and I put in a new TNSNAMES.ORA file. At the present time I can delete my TNSNAMES.ORA file from my laptop and TOAD will still connect to Oracle. However, SQLPlus or any other tool I use to connect to Oracle will not connect. Also, I can connect to Oracle databases that are not in my current TNSNAMES.ORA file.
    I have scanned my laptop looking for TNSNAMES.ORA files. I have set my registry to include a TNS_ADMIN entry to point to my current TNSNAMES.ORA file and I have set up user and system variables to point to my current TNSNAMES.ORA file but nothing seems to stop TOAD from using the Oracle connection strings that were established in OID. By the way, I uninstalled TOAD, cleaned out all files and registry entries that I know of; then I reinstalled TOAD. That didn't help either.
    Does anybody have any ideas of where I can look to resolve this?
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Is it possible, you are a 'victim' of hostname resolution? If there's a constellation like:
    1)You have a host named host.something.com
    2) You enter 'sqlplus scott/[email protected]'
    then Oracle generates
              (DESCRIPTION=
              (CONNECT_DATA=(SID=*)(SERVICE_NAME=host.something.com))
              (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=host.something.com)(PORT=1521))
    Connect will succeed if you have a corresponding configuration on the server side,you don't need any configuration files on the client side.
    BUT, since you have sqlnet.ora, which points to tnsnames as name resolution, it would mean TOAD ignores yout sqlnet.ora. Nevertheless host name resolution could be an explanation for this mysterious behaviour.

  • Using OID for tnsnames saving

    Hello.
    I want to use OID as a single point for tnsnames saving. So, I has installed OID without WebLogic Domain from Oracle Identity Management 11.1.1.2.0 for Linux x86 64. DB for OID is 11.1.0.7.0.
    As it seems, OID works, "bind successfull" and etc. But I can't tnsping any of descriptor, which has already been wrote into LDAP.
    This is ldap search for descriptor s1
    [oracle@s1db01 ~]$ ldapsearch -s sub "cn=s1" -p 3060 -h 10.128.164.139 -D "cn=orcladmin" -q

    So.... If you wanna do something, it would be better do it by yourself.
    The problem was in port confguration and anonymous bind flag.
    ldapmodify -U 1 -p 3131 -h s1db03 -D "cn=orcladmin" -q -v <<EOF

    changetype: modify
    replace: orclsslport
    orclsslport: 44017
    EOF
    And...
    ldapmodify -p 44016 -h s1db03 -D "cn=orcladmin" -q -v <<EOF
    dn: cn=oid1,cn=osdldapd,cn=subconfigsubentry
    changetype: modify

    And in addition I have changed /etc/services by adding lines with ssl and non-ssl ports.

  • Replace local tnsnames.ora-files with OID

    Hi there,
    I would like to replace our local tnsnames.ora-files with an central OID-Instance. I know I will have to use the ldap.ora on clientside, but how can I add service names to the OID?
    Is there any guide or manual which describes this functionality?
    Best Regards

    You need the Net Configuration Assistant, not Net Manager!
    - select configure Directory Usage
    - select correct type and name, and port(s)
    - select correct default context (NOT cn=OracleContext!)
    Next, you should be able to navigate to Local Naming, select an entry from your tnsnames.ora, and select from the mennu: Command->Directory->Export Net Service Names
    - select one or more entries to be migrated

  • Timeouts while using LDAP and TNSNAMES for names resolving

    I use an OID for Oracle Names resolving at the client-side.
    I tested some errorcases because there are no HA-features implemented for the OID.
    So i have an LDAP.ORA with the adress and the ports of the OID.
    My SQLNET.ORA has this content:
    NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN = <my_company_domian>
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (LDAP, TNSNAMES)So actually there is no problem. But when i turn off the OID-Server there iss a timeout of about 20 second to resolve the name.
    So my problem is not the resolving. I only want to know if there is a possibility to minimize the timeout to switch between LDAP-name-resolving to tnsnames.ora-name-resolving?

    thanks Oviwan but i think this problem couldn't be solved with a parameter.
    @rgoogld:
    I already feared that i have to live with that timeout.
    But your options are interesting. In the future i will have 2 OIDs and in the first time the TNSNAMES.ORA-names-resolving as backup.
    I already can test this because i have a productive OID and one for test-purposes. So at the moment i have two OIDs listet in my LDAP.ORA.
    example:
    DIRECTORY_SERVERS = (<server_name_oid1>:<Port1>:<Port2>, <server_name_oid2>:<Port1>:<Port2>)
    DEFAULT_ADMIN_CONTEXT = ""
    DIRECTORY_SERVER_TYPE = OIDThere is already a (about 20 seconds) timeout, when the OID1 is powered down or the services are stopped. The client honestly ask the second OID after the "timeout" and resolve the name.
    2 OIDs+TNSNAMS or 1 OID+TNSNAMES in both cases your options could perhaps prevent the timeout. I'm not really a system administrator, but i can discuss it with my colleagues here.
    Do you know a smart way to remove or repoint an DNS-entry in a windows enviroment. For such actions i have also to monitor the status of the OID-services or the servers and make the dns-changes if something is crashed.
    At this moment i have no idea how to do this but perhaps you or someone else here have some tips for me.

  • What is the benefit in using OID for names resolution?

    I have been wondering about this for awhile. I have been working on getting this to work in Iplanet along with Pat Lehane ([email protected]), and it works now.
    What are the benefits in using OID for names resolution when you can just use the static tnsnames.ora. Database and database names are not created dynamically and they don't change that often. Would creates a new database every day and has to worry about changing the static tnsnames.ora file. In my environment, we run Oracle applications from a server, so there is only one tnsnames.ora file, on the file server.
    It would appear that using OID would cause extra traffic (LDAP lookups) on your network.
    I would like some opinions from both Oracle and Oracle users. Thanks

    hi,
    A benefit of using OID for names resolution is that it allows you to centralize net8 naming (i.e., tnsnames) information in the same place (OID) where other types of administrative information (about users, enterprise groups, enterprise roles, etc) gets stored. If you are more comfortable using tnsnames.ora files for net8 naming, that is perfectly fine!
    An important reason that Oracle had for providing Net8 naming functionality in OID is that the legacy 'Oracle Names' functionality of Oracle 7 will eventually be desupported. This is discussed in metalink Note #135696.1 on http://metalink.oracle.com .
    Hope this helps.

  • Changing host name of OID repository... Where do I need to make changes?

    We are moving our OID metadata repository to a different host and Im curious where I need to make the modifications in our OID installation to accommodate the new host name.
    Things we have already done:
    1) Modified and pushed out the new tnsnames.ora file.
    2) ODM -> Entry Management -> Oracle Context Made changes to a) orclnetdescstring b) cn=OID -> cn=Description_0 -> cn=Address_List_0 -> cn=Address_0 -> orclnetaddressstring
    3) Updated the %ORACLE_HOME%\OraHome\sysman\emd\targets.xml
    After these changes were made, completed rebooted the system. OID seems to be working, however if I open a command prompt and 'tnsping OID' I still get the old host name, however if I fully qualify it, 'tnsping OID.xxx.local' it finds the correct host name....
    Am I missing an update somewhere that causes tnsping to not find the correct host for the repository? Can I update the current repository registration via oracle tool?
    Thanks

  • Error in OID ldap integration

    I'm trying to integrate Portal and OID authentication.
    I followed all the documentation in conf_ldap.pdf but I get the error:Unexpected errors (WWC-41400).
    Both the tnsping exproc_connection_data
    and lsnrctl status give the right result as stated in the document.
    So I've tryed to launch from portal30_sso user this command:
    select WWSSO_AUTH_EXTERNAL.authenticate_user('portal30','portal30') from dual
    and I get the error:
    ORA-28576: lost RPC connection to external procedure agent
    ORA-06512: at "PORTAL30_SSO.WWSSO_AUTH_EXTERNAL", line 281
    ORA-06512: at line 1
    Both tnsnames.ora and lisner.ora seems to be configures fine.
    I'm using OID coming from Oracle 8.1.7.0 and OiAS 1.0.2.1 for NT on a win 2000 sp1,
    Where is the problem?
    Thank's in advance

    Here are some things to check:
    I beleive that some of the newer versions of Portal have a user
    called "portal309_sso" instead of "portal30_sso". My examples
    below use portal30_sso". Use whatever user is appropriate for
    your version of Portal.
    If you have not yet installed OID (Oracle's LDAP server) none of
    this will work. Make sure OID is installed and running. OID can
    be installed in the same database that Portal uses.
    All of the following sql command steps must be executed as
    portal30_sso schema user, NOT portal30.
    Examples for NT:
    Copy the appropriate library file (ssoxldap.dll) used for the
    LDAP API callouts from the $PORTAL_HOME/portal30/admin/plsql/sso
    directory of the product installation into the appropriate place
    on the Login Server machine:
    Examples for NT copy:
    F:\>copy \PORTAL_HOME\portal30\admin\plsql\sso\ssoxldap.dll
    ORACLE_HOME\bin
    F:\>sqlplus portal30_sso/portal30_sso create or replace library
    auth_ext as F:\Oracle\Ora8db\bin\ssoxldap.dll';
    Notice that you must type a forward slash on a line by itself
    after you execute the command.
    Make sure that your network connectivity is working.
    Make sure you have at least 1 service handler for PLSExtProc:
    Example:
    F:\>set ORACLE_HOME=F:\Oracle\Ora8db
    F:\>lsnrctl status
    PLSExtProc has 1 service handler(s)
    Make sure you can tnsping extproc_connection_data.
    Example:
    F:\>tnsping extproc_connection_data
    Attempting to contact (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=IPC)(KEY=EXTPROC0))
    OK (80 msec)
    F:\>
    If either of these two network connectivity checks fail nothing
    else will work.
    Next make sure you enter the correct information for the
    ssoldap.sql script. One small typing error will cause the problem
    you had. In the example below there are a couple of common
    mistakes people make. Make sure you type the full Search base.
    The value for the search base should be "cn=Login Server
    (portal30_sso)". Don't forget the cn= and be sure to put in the
    spaces and capitol letters where you see them. In the "Bind DN"
    make sure you dont forget to put in the "cn=" in front of the
    "orcladmin".
    Example:
    sqlplus portal30_sso/portal30_sso
    @\oracle\isuites9i\portal30\admin\plsql\sso\ssoldap
    Host: 144.25.95.92
    Port: 389
    Search Base: cn=Login Server (portal30_sso)
    Unique Attribute: cn
    Bind DN: cn=orcladmin
    Bind Password: welcome
    Note: If you have already changed the password for cn=orcladmin
    in the OID LDAP server you must use that password instead of
    "welcome" for the "Bind Password:".
    Creating the users.ldif file for migrating existing users in the
    portal30 database schema.
    sqlplus portal30_sso/portal30_sso
    @f:\oracle\isuites9i\portal30\admin\plsql\sso\ssoldif
    Generating 'users.ldif' file for existing Portal users.
    Enter the desired file location.
    F:\oracle\admin\oiddb2\udump
    NOTE: The file location must be specified in the appropriate
    parameter in the init.ora file.
    Example (you should see a line like this in the init.ora file):
    UTL_FILE_DIR = F:\Oracle\admin\oid2111\udump
    This line specifies where to dump data the you want to migrate.
    If this line was not present in the init.ora file before you
    started your database you will have to restart the database for
    this step to succeed.
    Using the file that was created in the last step (users.ldif),
    add the entries to the LDAP directory. This example uses Oracle
    Internet Directory's ldapadd command line utility:
    Note. The following command is one long line. If you have already
    done this next step before you may want to go into OID and delete
    the existing data that is already in OID. Use the ODM (Oracle
    Directory Manager) tool to do this. Under "Entry management" make
    sure you delete any entries that you may have already created. If
    the directory entries already exist you will get an error when
    you run the next command indicating that the entries already
    exist. Because any previous entries you may have created may not
    be good those entries should be deleted.
    ldapadd -h 144.25.95.92 -p 389 D cn=orcladmin -w welcome f
    f:\oracle\admin\oiddb2\udump\users.ldif
    Once these users are successfully added, you are ready to log
    into the Portal through the Login Server, authenticating against
    this LDAP directory.
    Make sure you login as a valid user that is under the "cn=Login
    Server (portal30_sso)" directory of your LDAP server.
    Example:
    Open your browser and go to the URL:
    http://ip_or_hostname:80/pls/portal30
    Click on the Login link
    Login as portal30_sso/portal30_sso
    Note: Assuming portal30_sso is a valid user in the LDAP server. I
    beleive that some of the newer versions of Portal have a user
    called "portal309_sso" instead of "portal30_sso".
    Hope this helps.

  • OID Licensing Question (with ODS EE)

    Hello.  I am currently using OID (11.1.1.6) for my naming service (instead of tnsnames).  According to Oracle you are granted a restricted-use license for using OID "... if users use the Directory Naming feature to configure Oracle Net Services."  Since this is what I am doing, I I am under the impression that I do not have to license Oracle on the server with OID as long as it is the only thing on that server (which it is).
    My company is looking at purchasing "Employee" Oracle Directory Services Enterprise Edition licenses (environment is all Oracle DB Enterpirse Edition, 10gR2 and 11gR2) so that we can setup chaining between OID and Microsoft AD so that user roles/permissions can be assigned through AD via AD groups.
    My question is: since I will no longer be using OID strictly for connection resolution, and even though we will purchase ODS EE, will I be forced to license my server that is only running OID?  I would think that this wouldn't be the case, but I always prefer to know ahead of time when it comes to Oracle and licensing.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    DC

    Hi Saad;
    I belive you can get the bestest answer from oracle support only. By the way you can also og a SR and confirm your issue wiht oracle support too.

  • A problem about starting OID service

    I stoped all the services.
    But when I restart the services,I can't start the
    OID service.
    1.start the IFS TNS
    2.start the IFS DB(iasdb)
    3.start the IFS OID(based on iasdb)
    Then I started a command session,and typed the following
    command:
    1.oidmon start
    2.oidctl connect=iasdb server=oidldapd instance=1 start
    but a error returned:
    for example:
    D:\oracle\ias\ifs>oidmon start
    OracleDirectoryService Created
    OracleDirectoryService started
    D:\oracle\ias\ifs>oidctl connect=iasdb server=oidldapd instance=1 start
    [gsdsiConnect] ORA-12154, ORA-12154
    I have checked the \ifs\network\ADMIN\tnsnames.ora.And I
    can find the connect-string "iasdb".
    Can any one help me,and tell me how to start the IAS services correctly?
    What is the IASDB's username/password ?
    Thanks a lot.

    What are the errors you get ? And when do you get those errors, when compiling, when runnning your application?

  • Developer6i Net8 client and OID/LDAP

    Is it possible to get the Net8 client that comes with Devloper 6i to be able to speak LDAP to OID? Even though it has the 'i' suffix, it does not seem to have the 'internet' capabilties that could be used with OID? Is there a patch or an upgrade?
    I tried to install the Oracle8i r2 and r3 client software to get the Net8 with ldap functionality, but it said I cannot install into an older Oracle_HOME.
    Any insight would be appreciated.
    Also please respond to this link below if you an input on this issue.
    "What is the benefit in using OID for names resolution?" @ http://technet.oracle.com:89/ubb/Forum60/HTML/000231.html

    So you are telling me that the Net8 client version 8.0.6.0.0 that comes with Oracle Forms and Reports 6i is capable of using OID or any other LDAP directory service instead of tnsnames.ora or Oracle Names, to do name lookups?
    Can you please email and tell me how?
    BTW, I have both OID and IPlanet setup for name resolution, and it works fine with the Net8 client off of the Oracle 8i r3 CD.

  • Accessing database via OID username and password

    I've have 2 servers, one with the following software:
    --- SERVER #1 ---
    * Oracle database v9.2.0.1
    * Management Server
    * OID
    --- SERVER #2 ---
    and the other database server with:
    * Oracle database v9.2.0.1
    * and the database that it is registered (via dbca) with the OID database above...
    I'm pretty sure everything is pretty close to configured correctly due to the
    the following: only 1 tnsnames file exist on my laptop, from the DOS prompt, if I comment out the tns entry that points to the database on server #2 then tnsping
    the database on server #2 it returns a message saying that it uses the LDAP file and it comes back with a message that ends w/OK, meaning (or what I believe means) that it hit the OID server for authentication.
    My only issue is logging in though, I always get a invalid username & password error message.... I did log into "Enterprise Securtiy Manager" on server #1 and register the database from server #2.... I also created that guest user w/"create user guest identified globally as '';".... I also created the "schema mapping" on server #1 to the guest schema and users within OID.... On what server was I supposed to run this command: "create user guest identified globally as '';", on server #1 or #2? I read a lot of stuff on the Internet about Oracle Wallets, not sure where this comes in, is this where I'm going wrong? When I ran the DBCA assistant on the db on server #2 it didn't prompt\ask for any Oracle Wallet info....
    What am I missing???
    Thanks in advance for your help,
    Wes

    You have another thread on this as well.
    Server 1 is the LDAP server (Oracle's implementation of it: OID), it can be used for network alias resolving as well as for authentication and authorization.
    There is no need to use OID for network resolving, so let's skip that. The only need is that server#2 is registered in OID (server#1) - the wallet comes in when server#2 needs to communicate passwords with OID - when you used DBCA on server #2, it should have created the wallet, altered your network (on server#2), and created ldap.ora.
    On server #2:
    - sqlnet.ora should contain LDAP in addition to other configured options on the names.directory_path entry
    - ldap.ora should contain your ldap server location, default (realm) context, and type (=OID)
    After running DBCA, you should be able to see the instance on server#2 in cn=OracleContext,dc=<your default realm context> in Oracle Directory manager (ODM)
    All the mapping stuff, I answered in the other thread, although I always use:
    create user global_schema identified globally;
    This works for 10G - and there have been changes from 9 to 10, but I'd check the syntax once more, if I were you
