To 32- or 64 - bit version - this is the question

Since I am trying to install Arch on my laptop, I am unsure whether to download the x64 version. The laptop has a t2310 dual core with 1 GB of RAM. If there will be problems with drivers or certain applications - then, tell me! Otherwise I don't see a particular reason, why would I install a 64-bit OS on the laptop.
Thanks in advance!

I use 64 bit and quite honestly I do not see one iota of a difference. Java is the only thing I can't get working and honestly, with the flexibility of arch, I have found plenty of ways to avoid java. I do not support 'software' that doesn't support 64 bit. U may call it whining, I call it a need for change. A direction we all need to start moving in.
AMD And INTEL have forgotten about 32 bit, its time software vendors did too.

  • Is it Time.....this is the Question?  Opinions Please

Is it time...this is the question?
Every 3 or 4 months since the release of Leopard I ask myself this question. I've been using Apple's Tiger operating system since it was released and I've been extremely happy with it and more to the point so has my aging iBook G4. "Circa Mid 2005" I've had almost no problems running Tiger, it's the most stable OS I've ever used and for the most part the only issues that have ever given me grief or frustration has been 3rd party software and plug-ins for Safari. However recently I've started noticing that more and more software developers are not offering OS 10-4 updates and their new software versions will not work on the Tiger OS and/or require an Intel processor. It annoys me when I read about some great new software I'd like to try only to find out it won't work without Leopard.
I guess my question is two fold really, will upgrading to the Leopard OS give me a better computing experience on an older machine, or am I going to be held back regardless because my laptop still uses a PPC processor? At this stage I'm not really considering buying a new laptop as this one is perfectly fine and until now has been bulletproof! What is the experience/opinions of other Mac users who upgraded their older machines to Leopard? Was it worth the hassle and after the initial interest in a new operating system wares off would you recommend upgrading?
So is it time.........or should I wait until this machine dies and makes this question a mute point?

    Hi Raymon!
The kind of question we are all faced with at some time! Bear in mind that the following are only my opinions, as this is all very subjective!
It annoys me when I read about some great new software I'd like to try only to find out it won't work without Leopard
The main reason why I upgraded to Leopard was to run iLife 9. The other reason was that Leopard is likely to be the final OS upgrade for a PPC Mac.
will upgrading to the Leopard OS give me a better computing experience on an older machine
Define 'better'! I have only run Leopard for 2 weeks but so far, as in Tiger, I have had no crashes of any kind. BTW, updates to Quicktime 7.6 and security update 2009-001 are vital. The real answer depends on the speed of your Mac. Leopard is a bit more resource hungry than Tiger, but I have noticed no changes in operating speed, and certainly no slow downs. Leopard has a lot of eye candy: using all of it uses extra resources, but they can all be switched off! But I like the new versions of iTunes and Front Row.
Was it worth the hassle and after the initial interest in a new operating system wares off would you recommend upgrading?
See above! But it was no hassle. Use the Archive and Install method for upgrading. Best of all, clone your entire system to a bootable external drive before upgrading, then if all else fails you can always go back to good ol' Tiger.
The one thing you WILL notice is that repairing permissions on Leopard takes at least half an hour! On Tiger it takes 2 minutes!
Just in case you forgot: check that your Mac meets the minimum specifications for Leopard, and you need a minimum of 1GB of RAM despite what they claim!
    Good luck!

  • Macbook Pro w/ Boot Camp - Best way to reformat the 32bit Windows 7 and install 64 bit version without affecting the Mac side?

Hi guys! I have a new Macbook Pro purchased from Best Buy yesterday. I had the Geek Squad upgrade the RAM to 8 gigs (They only had PNY brand, I was concerned but went with it anyway). I had them install Boot Camp Windows 7 Ultimate. Today I picked it up and when I started playing with it I learned that they installed the 32 bit version of Win 7 Ultimate instead of the 64 bit version, why, I have NO IDEA.
So, I want to replace the Win 7 installation with the 64 bit version but have read that this can be tricky. What is the proper way to do this? I'm not sure I trust the Geek Squad to do this for me.
I assume I need to reformat the Windows partition, defragment and then install the 64 bit version of Win 7 Ultimate, but am not completely sure. I want to be sure that I do NOT do anything that could affect the Mac side
    What do you guys think?

I think you should take it back to the Geeks and tell them what you want, I also think you should backup before you do.
You do not need to reformat or repartition, you need to reinstall Windows from a 64bit copy, 32 & 64 have identical requirements as far as partition and format go, defragmenting has nothing at all to do with your needs.

  • New mandant or modify the standard, this is the question!

    Good morning,
I sincerely hope that someone already has been in this situation, to suggest me the best solution and why this is the best one.
I try to explain my doubts...
We have to create a new firma (new BUKRS 0610) in our HR module where we already have another firma with BUKRS 0120.
And up to here, with normal customizing, I can do that without particular problems.
The problem is that this new 0610 differs in many contract rules from the 0120 and not in every table there is a group or subgroup that can I use to save those differences. For example one of this is the T511K table, where in key we have only MOLGA, KONST and DATE.
No BUKRS or something else to distinguish the settings of the 2 firma!
Then? What to do? I think there are only 2 possible solution:
modify every programm (also standard), functions (SE37+SE04, also standard), rules and soon… inserting an IF according to the BUKRS of the current employe. High risk to damage what today run well.
create a new mandant: nothing to modify, 2 separated worlds, best guarantee of integrity data, but a new environment to customize.
I’m most for the variant 2, because I always prefer to play safe
    Thank you all

  • To upgrade or Not to upgrade this is the Question? What is the Answer!

Does Adobe expect Design & Prepress studios like the one I run to upgrade all out copies to get the latest version of Acrobat 9 before they have fixed the problems that are in Acrobat 8? I see that the latest version is released now but there is still problems with 8, just last month we printed an 130 page brochure worth £24k that was messed up and we had to reduce the cost of the final print job, simply because the PDF created from In-Design CS3 dropped off text that went across spread (it was only on 1 of the 2 pages). So Adobe I put it to you why should we bother paying you to upgrade to the latest version? To me it seems like Adobe is QuarkXpress all over again with their attitude towards customers, Quark would do the same thing, version 4 was release when 3.3 still was not right, it was this reason that I decided to give In-design a try and finally moved away from Quark not just the problems with the product but the attitude towards support. Maybe it's time to give Quark another bit at the cherry I understand that they actually care about their customers again. So why is Adobe taking the same path they did I would hope that someone at adobe learn the Quark lesson. Do anyone else feel that Adobe is pulling a fast one here or is it just me?

You printed a job without proofing it? What you saw could well be a
problem in ID or Acrobat or...it could be user error or a bad font.
But it's still your responsibility to provide a proof and it's the
client's responsibility to look at it.
    >So Adobe I put it to you why should we bother paying you to upgrade to
    the latest version?
This is a user to user forum, not a direct line to anyone at Adobe. If
you wish to address the folks at Adobe, you'll need to do so directly.
If you want help with an issue, you'll need to ask for it with full details.

  • N97 - Black or White - this is the question !

I have a brand new N97 - black  but debating to replace it with a white one,  hoping that the fonts engraved on the keyboard (both English & Hebrew) will be clearer in daylight for the not so great eyesight....
    What do you think ?
Did you find any specific problem which is only in the white version ?
Looking forward to hearing from you guys !

    Thank you ALL!
I had a guy come to my office today and demonstrate the WHITE - I chose the white !!!
I liked the white  keyboard for the reasons I mentioned yesterday, it is clearer and easier to see the fonts in daylight !
I also chose the WHITE because most of others chosen the BLACK
It is a great phone, and after getting rid of the annoying "freeze" when answering a call by installing the relevant update from the update software application I the pone - it works flawlessly !

P.S. I also used to have a 9300 and I also thought the N97 will be silverish - but in this matt white - it looks great.
I also understand that for about $100 you can change the cover and keyboard ! If one decide to change after all.

  • WiFi or not WiFi this is the question

i will try and keep this as short as possible but that could be difficult
over the last 2 years ive had quite a lot of problems with steady 5-6mb dropping to 0.001mb, phone line dying for upto 11 days at a time etc etc
strange thing was that every time i was talking to indian call centre the speed would be normal but as soon as i hung up it would drop to 0.001 again. of course every time i had to go through the same tests and was told there was nothing wrong and i would have to pay for an engineer.
after 9 days i was escalated to section 2 in the uk. they advised moving my hub from my wired connection upstairs (extension cable installed by bt) and plugging into the master test socket downstairs.
after 48 hours of testing it turned out there was a board out at the exchange and also my IP kept resetting. thinking all was fine i took the hub back upstairs again and was back to 0.001mb
they advised to leave it plugged in downstairs and for the last 6 months its been working fine at a steady 5-6mb.
we are now upto date.  yesterday i had infinity 2 installed.
engineer knocked and said he was off to the junction box to wire me in, yippee i thought.
came back 10 minutes later and phone and line was dead. said he could have broken something and he would have to call bt. 15 minutes later it turned out the socket that was reserved for me was damaged but luckily they had 1 spare so he wired me up.
he came back to the house. plugged in the hub next to the main socket downstairs and said could i test internet before he left.
i explained that i was told by bt when i ordered and as stated in the pre install email "Your engineer can run an Ethernet extension cable (up to 30 metres long) from where you can plug in your Hub and back to your phone master socket".
reason i wanted the hub back in my office upstairs was so i could get a wired connection for gaming which is always better than wifi and also my skyHD for on demand.
"oh we dont do any work or wiring in the house and why would you want it anyway as the longer the cable the less speed you will get. best to leave it next to socket".
wasnt happy but went with the flow as he was in such a hurry to leave.
    now my question is:
which option would lose me the most speed.
running a cable up one flight of stairs and having my laptop and sky box plugged straight into the hub.
or running on continuous WiFi with the hub downstairs and me upstairs.
other neighbours including a bt engineer are getting roughly 60-70mb
my estimate from bt, download 72-80mb and upload 19.9-20mb
i know it takes a couple of days for it to settle down but after various speed tests using bt wholesale i am getting:
yesterday after 3 hours installed on wifi 53.26 down and 15.27 up.
3 hours later wifi 35.26 down and 10.37 up
today wired downstairs 53.32 down 14.25 up
wifi upstairs 5 minutes later 38.82 down 13.47 up
the numbers sure do look a lot better than i was previously getting but strangely enough it doesnt seem as fast when opening websites. i have a very fast professional gaming laptop so its defo not that slowing things down.
should i stick with what ive got and hope the speeds go back up (after reading a lot of posts on here im not holding my breath) or should i follow it up with our friends in india and ask for the ethernet cable to be installed.
thanks in advance for any feedback and sorry once again for the long post.
    edit:
    image 1 wifi
    image 2 wired
image 3 five minutes later wifi

Let it settle for a couple of days and see what you are getting then.
My wired download speed on my gaming desktop is 61(ish) and 17.5 up. If I run the same test on my wireless connection on my (aging) Alienware laptop I get 55 down and 17 up, so for me it's no real difference.
The main thing is your ping, the download speed is only half the story. A year ago I was on standard ADSL with a download of 6-7 and a ping of 17ms, now I am on 55-60 down with a 29ms ping, and haven't noticed any difference playing titles such as BF3 online.
Of interest is I had reason to call on the OR engineers last week to sort out an issue, and after they looked at my installation ran a wire externally from where the phone line came into my property, up to where my hub was, thus making my 'master' socket indeed the true master - not an extension with a master faceplate on it.

  • Is there a Firefox 64 bit version for Win 7 64 bit. I cant find any data on this.

I have read that there may be a 64 bit version of Firefox. My latest upgrade is V 6.0 which to me is no different to earlier versions and still loads very slow put of the box. I am not to keen on using beta versions as I have experienced many troubles in the past using these on my Win 7 64 bit . Every upgrade always seems to be the old 32bit. Surely by now most programs should have caught up to 64 bit. Thanks for any help

Win64 Nightly has existed for some time however they are not supported (like the Win32, Mac OSX 32/64-bit and Linux 32/64-bit are) as they are currently more for to catch breakage/regressions. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Supported_build_configurations
No it is not simply because the 32-bit version works.
The 64-bit Windows builds has still been a work in progress on a number of things that needs to be in order, especially for Win64 Releases to happen.

When I downloaded the CAN device drivers and installed the package, the sub VIs did not show up in the tool bar when I ran LabVIEW. However, when I look in the (x86) version files I see the CAN folder installed in the 64 bit program files directory!  Should I uninstall the current version and reinstall the 64 bit verson to fix this CAN problem, or is there another way to fix this
You got it mixed up here. Microsoft decided that Program Files is always meant to mean the native version, which means that for Windows 64 bit, any 64 Bit applications get installed there. Program Files (x86) is for 32 Bit applications that will run inside the Win32 subsystem in Win64. Most NI Toolkit and driver installers only install into 32 Bit. So if you use LabVIEW 64 Bit you will usually have to copy the files from the Program Files (x86) directory into the according Program Files directory, making sure you maintain the same hierarchy.
