To all those with Superdrive problems

There are a lot of threads on a lot of fora regarding the Matshita DVD-RW drive in the MBPs. The name contains a well known English obscenity and it appears to be well deserved.
I bought one of the first rev.A MBPs (as usual... when will I learn) and it turned out to be a duffer (massive heat problems, throttling and 1 GHz operation at most loads). Apple took it back and returned me (months later) a brand new MBP (2.16 Core Duo, 256 MB VRAM, 2 GB RAM, 7200 rpm HD, etc.) since I'd gone for a good spec.
In the meantime I'd bought a black Macbook and was extremely happy with its performance and greater portability (for my workload it was just as good, I'm not a graphics pro).
So the MBP, after it arrived, lay unused for some time. I'm now trying to sell it, so decided to fire it up, hardware test it, then wipe the disk thoroughly and restore it.
Would it take any optical media? No. Just a chomping noise, like a bad floppy drive used to sound like.
Out of warranty, and wanting to sell it, I decided to rip the thing apart and see what the problem was. It showed up fine in System Profiler (so not software) but made a nasty mechanical sound, so I thought there may be a chance there was something mechanical involved, and I may be able to fix it.
Once I'd disassembled the MBP enough to get the DVD drive out, it was painfully clear that the DVD drive was either an impossible engineering requirement or a shoddy job. I got the top lid off the drive and ran the machine with both CDs and DVDs in, not only would the head scrape along the protective (thin and easily warped) metal plate, but parts of the mechanism would rub against the disc due to flex in the chassis of the drive. This was exacerbated by the flex build into the lower left hand corner of the drive by the use of two rubber washers.
I admit I hacked it up a bit - added material to force the bottom left corner chassis screw to hold the chassis more firmly, and cut away the metal over the worm drive for the head.
It all works now, like all my previous Powerbooks did - smooth, quiet and no vibration or scraping.
Since the problem doesn't apply to all machines, I'd guess this is mainly due to Matshita poor manufacturing or poor assembly tolerances. The drive is only held into the MBP by three screws - all of which are on very flexible brackets, so there's no way of securing the structure of the drive in the MBP by using Apple's screws.
Apple aren't the culprit here - ***** Matshita drives are the problem. Fortunately I got lucky by working out where the problem lay and cutting stuff until it worked...
Lots of Apples   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Inherent poor design or poor assembly can twist the Matshita drive, causing incorrect performance. This can be mitigated by disassembly and ensuring that the optical drive chassis is dead straight, perhaps by adding a washer to the lower left corner screw. An alternative to paying for a new unit if your machine is out of warranty.

  • For all those with D-Link routers and problems with iTunes dropping AppleTV

My setup: Custom built WinXP PC with iTunes 7.6.2. Apple TV w/Take 2. D-link DI-624 wireless N router, wired to the PC, wireless to the aTV.
I have an intersting phenomenon occuring with my Apple TV. I can sync the aTV to my PC and it works fine, but the first time we receive a phone call on our VOIP phone, the router drops the ATV connection to the PC. aTV still has internet connectivity, but iTunes on the PC cannot see the aTV, and I cannot sync.
A search yielded gobs of folks with D-link routers and iTunes/AppleTV connection issues. I just won an Airport Extreme router off ebay...as soon as I have a chance to test it out I will post back in this thread as to the results.
I know folks don't like the solution to be "spend more money", but I think it would be worth it to a lot of people if they knew a different router would solve their issues (rather than continuing to guess or throw money at the problem randomly).

I have a WinXP PC and a Linksys G class router. I am on Comcast broadband cable. Both ATV and PC are on wireless link. And I have tried a borrowed Apple Airport router (G class). That didn't help resolve this problem so far. I don't think it is a router issue as you will see that many folks on this forum have the same problem with a wide mix of environments. Many of them are on pure Apple components and so one cannot blame Microsoft and non-Apple devices.
Having said this, I hope the new router resolves your issues. In my case, the only option left is to keep calling Apple Care.

  • For all of those with DM problems

I have read quite a few of threads where people describe problems they are having...I know it can be frustrating.  So let me make some general comments:
    1. RIM is not involved with this site as far as support goes (TMK), just a bunch of users
    2. Mac users are used to things going fairly smoothly with new software installation...
    3. RIM is a direct competitor of Mac (iPhone...LOL)
    4. Diagnosing a software issue can be difficult (especially when no information is supplied regarding Mac system, Mac OS, Device, Device OS, and what other software did you or do you have installed)...
    5.  My first recommendation is to reinstall the DM software following this thread:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-for-Mac/Proper-DM-Install/td-p/381491
    6. The thread that is a sticky at the top by FozyBear is also great:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-for-Mac/Mac-version-of-BlackBerry-Desktop-Manager-...
    7. Do not expect perfect one-to-one sync of contacts, calendar events and notes.  The field maps are different...remember they are competing software platforms.  You may have to "clean up" either your device or iCal/Address Book BEFORE you sync...and always archive.
    8. If it fails the first thing to do is delete the blackberrydesktop folder from user/username/library/application support restart, repair permissions, clear cache and try again.

  • Forum being Spammed with Superdrive Problems

I just looked at page 3 and practically every post is about problems with the superdrive. Then I realized it's all over page 1 and 2 as well. Isn't it obvious that this forum is being spammed?

I'm not so sure about that. But say you have a
legitimate problem. I looked at your 3 posts. Don't
you think it could be a problem with YOUR superdrive
and a solution would be to call Apple rather than to
tell people to completely avoid Macbook Pros? In my
    opinion, that is spam.
Well, we are entitiled to our opinions and I respect yours.
But since Apple has 1) been unable to fix the problem, including having my laptop for a week to repair the problem; and 2) can offer no new advice, beyond sending it in for repair again, after meeting with tthe GeniusBar guy and talking to tech support I need to know if this is the best course of action or a futile effort.
I'm sure this is more spam in your mind - c'est le vie!

  • For all those with no sound with ITunes 7.0

I'm just going to post what happened to me. After installing iTunes 7, I could not play any music...the progress bar would sit there, and eventually I would hear a weird sound coming from the speakers.
I opened up the QuickTime control panel, and went to the Audio tab. I set the rate to 192 Khz (from 44.1) and left Size=16. After applying, I could play all of my music.
Don't ask me why. I just hope it works for others.

I have a WinXP PC and a Linksys G class router. I am on Comcast broadband cable. Both ATV and PC are on wireless link. And I have tried a borrowed Apple Airport router (G class). • ILife broken! All started with iMovie problem, any ideas?

I have posted in the iMovie 6HD forums about a problem of it slowing down to a crawl and no one has been able to resolve that issue. I spoke to several employees at the Apple store about the problem & they ran it past a 'Genius' who didn't suggested reinstalling the entire iLife suite.
I did that yesterday and now none of the iLife suite will even open. When you click the dock there is 1 bounce and nothing happens. Dbl click the icon in the finder, it acts like its opening, but nothing happens. What went wrong? I've never had Apple software ever act this way.
I reinstalled the iLife software twice to no avail. Please help!
    Thanks,
    Mark

Did you run the suggested 3-pass Memtest? What did it report? What did the AHT say? If you believe that the hardware is OK, then it is a software issue. If so, and you have done a clean install from the ground up... things are indeed looking bad for you.
I would first run the 3-pass Memtest in single user mode as the instructions outline. This test alone will take several hours... unless your "lucky" enough to have an easily identifiable bad memory block. After that, and assuming the AHT passed everything it is now time to start from scratch. Install the OS and nothing but the OS. Do a clean install, not an archive and install (again, make sure everything is backed up to another drive). Take the new install out for a spin- does everything seem OK? Then start installing apps one at a time. If the iLife apps are your main apps, install them, run all the updates, and then repair permissions. Now how are the iLife apps responding (if at all)? If installing JUST the iLife apps on a clean install of the OS doesn't work, there is a high probability of a hardware problem which means now a technician would need diagnose the hardware problem. If the iLife apps work without any other software installed, then there is a high probability there is a software conflict with another program. Now it is time to install one program at a time trying out the iLife (iMovie) apps until you see which program is causing the conflict.

  • For all those with "BLANK SCREEN ISSUES" with MacBook Pro's....

...I suggest you direct all the issues you're having to Apple through the feedback form here:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html
I for one have rang tech support twice now, had a go and the only response I got back was to go to that link, fill the form in and wait for response.
State the problems you're having and post this link as reference:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1478474
Hopefully then Apple with acknowledge each of us.
(PS. Apple people...DO NOT delete this post for being "off topic" because it most definately IS ON TOPIC!. Im trying to save people from calling tech support at their expense only to be told to fill in the feedback form.)

To you if I'm not mistaken...you upgraded to 9.0-1 via pacman,
but the fix was in 9.01 not 9.0-1.
If you read my post, I was responding to Vex who said 9.0[-1] fixed his issue. Knowing that 9.0[-1] != 9. 01 (and that the fix was in 9.01) , I told him it was weird that 9.0-1 fixed his problem (which is more polite than saying, "Bullsh*t!"), and I confirmed the weirdness by pointing out that the 9.0-1 upgrade I had performed earlier that morning did nothing for me (nor did I expect it to because the fix was in 9.01). Finally, I confirmed that building and installing 9.01 did the trick (as it was supposed to).
I don't really think anybody was confused about 9.0-1 != 9.01. That's why I asked who Stonecrest was talking to. No big deal.

  • Sequence and INSERT ALL INTO with parallelism problem

I want to use the INSERT ALL INTO style of multiple-inserts (with 10gR2) to normalize a wide table into a skinny table. The large table has a few fk columns and 100 numeric columns. I want to insert them into another table as 100 rows in a single SQL pass.
    CREATE TABLE WIDE_SOURCE(
    FKEY_1 INTEGER,
    FKEY_2 INTEGER,
    FKEY_3 INTEGER,
    AMT001 INTEGER,
    AMT002 INTEGER,
    AMT100 INTEGER);
    CREATE TABLE SKINNY_DEST(
    PKEY INTEGER NOT NULL,
    FKEY_1 INTEGER,
    FKEY_2 INTEGER,
    FKEY_3 INTEGER,
    AMT INTEGER,
    CONSTRAINT PK_SKINNY_DEST PRIMARY KEY(PKEY)
    CREATE SEQUENCE KEY_GEN MINVALUE 1 INCREMENT BY 100 START WITH 1;
    INSERT ALL
    INTO SKINNY_DEST VALUES(KEY_GEN.NEXTVAL+001, FKEY_1, FKEY_2, FKEY_3, AMT001)
    INTO SKINNY_DEST VALUES(KEY_GEN.NEXTVAL+002, FKEY_1, FKEY_2, FKEY_3, AMT002)
    INTO SKINNY_DEST VALUES(KEY_GEN.NEXTVAL+003, FKEY_1, FKEY_2, FKEY_3, AMT003)
    INTO SKINNY_DEST VALUES(KEY_GEN.NEXTVAL+100, FKEY_1, FKEY_2, FKEY_3, AMT100)
    SELECT * FROM WIDE_SOURCE;
With this query, each row in WIDE_SOURCE will generate 100 rows in SKINNY_DEST. I know that works. Unfortunately, it appears that the sequence isn't working the way I thought it should- with multiple nodes and parallel insert, there's some overlap in the generated key.
Is there a better way? I've considered 100 separate sequences, but that just seems plain silly. Am I trying to have my cake (the parallelism) and eat it too (by disregarding limitations of Oracle's sequence construct)?

Have not tested this on a RAC, but it seems to work fine - as expected without any overlaps. (version 10.2.0.1.0)

  • To all those with Corecenter

If Cool n' Quiet doesn't auto adjust speed of fans in Corecenter check you have Corecenter enabled in the BIOS and have the latest version of BIOS and Corecenter installed.

Here's my "take" on Core Center & the like....
When buying my Neo2 Plat - I wasn't even aware of Core Center... I just bought it on the merits of the hardware, not all the "frou-frou" that happened to come with it. Just how many of you use all the crap on the CD that comes with any Creative Audigy sound card? Does anyone buy an Audigy 2ZS  just so they can have Creative Media Center? If you did, you might not want to read any further....
Since Core Center & it's functionality (or lack thereof) wasn't a selling point to me for this board, I wasn't too upset when I removed after 24hrs or so of taking up space on my HD and generally malfunctioning while it was in residence.
It's not like that I "paid" a bunch for it - since it's a "one size fits all" app that was obviously not optimized for any particular board and has been "bought & paid for" many thousands of shipped units ago. I didn't really expect it to work - one of my old ABIT boards shipped with a simliar garbage utility & theirs works no better - cruise their user forums & see.
At least MSI stopped short of trying to foist a piece of hardware (ABIT's CoreClock - I think or something to that effect) on the "public" that sits on top of your desk & displays suspect info and expects you to pay extra for the "privilege". We got off easy with Core Center.... at least that's software only. Screwed up "extraware" is one thing, a piece of hardware is quite another....
I viewed Core Center with the same suspicion as all Windows-based utilities of this type at the very beginning - Use at your own risk! If you rely on it, well it's your BIOS that you're well on the way to corrupting.
Core Center & its "me-too relatives" aren't much more than a list of "features" that the marketing guys use to fill up space on the side of a retail box or to flesh out a column of text on a company website.... Think of it as such & you'll feel much better.
Sure it blows, because it doesn't work - but it's not worth "losing sleep" over. Especially when there's freeware/shareware out there that will do the job because it was coded by an "enthusiast" that actually cares if it works or not. By all means, let the support people know about it - maybe the engineers will prevail next time & not let the marketing guys bully them into shipping a heniously flawed piece of kit - Not likely, but stranger things have happened.
Better yet, save yourselves a lot irritation/aggravation - go for a hardware solution. Get a decent fan controller & adjust your setups to your own needs and not what a piece of inherently suspect piece of software "thinks" you should have.
    IMHO....

  • To everyone experiencing Superdrive problems: please send Apple feedback

Here is the link for all those whose Superdrives have been made inoperable since the Firmware 3.0 Update. (Mine included).
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html
Please use this link, Apple may actually listen if there are enough of us..

Drives get dirty, HD2600. Apple regard dirty drives as "defective" drives, and replace them if they are warranty or Applecare.
If you reckon Apple have problems with SuperDrives take a look at the number of hits if you Google up "Thinkpad DVD drive problems" !
There is nothing new or unusual about DVD drives failing to function properly for a variety of reasons. It is simply not a particularly reliable medium.
Slot loading drives are a bit more prone to issues than tray loaders, largely because they are harder to clean, but it is an issue right across the computer industry.
