To allow access, please respond on your iPad...but the screen is black!

I was running Netflix and the app was taking many minutes so I decided to turn the iPad off. Held the Sleep/Wake button and it went off. Gave it a minute and held the S/W button again and....nothing.
I thought perhaps the battery was low so I plugged it in for an hour. Pressed the S/W button. Nothing.
If I hold the S/W and Home, then release both, I get the white apple logo for a few seconds, then it fades and...nothing.
I got online and went through the reset, then attempting to Restore with iTunes (per iOS: Not responding or does not turn on). I hold the Home button, plug the cable in, get a popup on the computer that asks "Do you want to allow this computer to access information on this iPad?. While STILL holding down the home button (even tho the screen is black), I click 'Continue' on the computer dialog. Then after a few seconds, I get another iTunes dialog "To allow access, please respond on your iPad". Still holding the Home button as directed in the Restore steps. and...nothing.
If I try again (unplug, reset everything) then do the #3 step above to get the Apple logo while the "To allow access" is still up on the computer, the dialog goes away while the white apple is on the iPad, then returns when the apple fades away.
If I try again (yes, I've been through the Restore several times with multiple variations :-) ) by getting the Apple logo up, THEN plugging the cable in, the iTunes computer dialog does not appear until the apple fades.
Anything else I can try before returning to the Apple store? I do some Windows support and know sometimes it's the obvious thing that is missing, so I really don't want to drive an hour to the store, just to be told, "Well, if you'd read through page 47 of iPad for dummies, and you'd just done _<fill in the blank>____, it would have resolved itself"
Thanks,
BR

Update: Took it to the genius bar and he was unable to get any more out of the pad than I was. We did find the battery drained so something was going on in the background. It was out of warranty so the best the store said they could do was a half-price replacement. We took it and I was watching netflix again tonight and it went into the same hang state (cancelling with its red loop). This time I went to the interwebs and found a way to reset the network. I was able to get it back. Bye bye netflix app :-/

    Hey 11doski,
    Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the display has a dark screen. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    Display has no backlight or dark screen
    Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
    Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
    While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
    If the low-battery screen appears, charge the iPhone.
    Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a nice day,

  • I bought a brand new ipod touch 5th gen, updated the software and now iTunes says "to allow access, please respond on your ipod touch" however the ipod has a black screen and pressing the buttons does nothing. how do i fix this?

    As the title says, this is a brand new iPod touch bought from a store, I plugged it in a commenced the "setting up" process through iTunes on may iMac. It got to the stage where it said allow this computer to access the device (or something along those lines), i clicked yes, and then a message came up "to allow access, please respond on your iPod touch. however the ipod screen is black, and pressing the buttons doesn't work. How can i fix this? or do I need to return it?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

    Dear all,
    Itune says " To allow access, please respone on your Iphone" but my Iphone has not respone button. How can I do?

    Turn off your phone by pressing and holding the power button and then swipe right to turn it off.  Then turn it on  and try connecting it to your phone. Make sure both the itunes and your iphones are signed in with the same apple id.

  • Computer recognizes iPad but the screen is black

    My computer recognizes my iPad but the screen is black/blank. I can sync, restore, etc, the iPad appears that it is functioning except that the screen stays black/blank occasionally you can see the backlights come on when you press the home/sleep/wake button. I have preformed hard/soft resets and restored the ipad with no success. Any suggestions?

    All iPads should still be under the one-year warranty. Presumably you have done something to your iPad which voided the warranty?
    Apple will still repair your iPad for a charge. There are also other repair shops who can fix it.

Any ideas?

    You may have to do this several times.
    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.

    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
    I tried to turn it off and it didn't work... and I held on to the shift key too and it still doesn't work..
    Please help me..
    Accidental damage is not covered under Apple warranty.  And it seems there is much accidental damage.  Only a Genius Bar tech looking at it can tell how much it will cost to repair.
    Cost to repair will be high, I suspect (though Genius Bar will confirm/deny.
    There is no gentle way to say this sir/ma'am ... someone will need to pay for your friend's MBA repairs.
    Unauthorized modification of iOS can cause security vulnerabilities, instability, shortened battery life, and other issues
    Security vulnerabilities: Jailbreaking your device eliminates security layers designed to protect your personal information and your iOS device. With this security removed from your iOS device, hackers may steal your personal information, damage your device, attack your network, or introduce malware, spyware or viruses.
    Inability to apply future software updates: Some unauthorized modifications have caused damage to iOS that is not repairable. This can result in the hacked iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iOS update is installed.
    ... It is also important to note that unauthorized modification of iOS is a violation of the iOS end-user software license agreement and because of this, Apple may deny service for an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software.
    Is the iPad password protected? If not, and in the absence of more information, try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. When the screen goes blank power On again in the normal way.] It is absolutely/appsolutely safe!
