"To boot or not to boot"

Hi,
When booting, after the apple icon, suddenly my 2006 macbook pro is making a hair-dryer-like noise (assuming it's the fan) and nothing shows up on the screen, it looks like it is off but actually it is not? (Rarely after a few trials, it boots ok.)
The system has been updated and the disk utility has come up ok, I tried another charger and no change.
I just want to understand what the problem is; dying fan? harddrive? or what other possibilities?
Thanks!
Lara

I have tried it a few times with "D", nothing happens, it boots normal, then thinking I might not have it installed, tried to do it via the internet by restarting holding Option+D, again nothing.
I don't have the installation disc as well:(
Is there any other ways of performing the test or if I used someoneelse's disc, would it help?
Thanks

  • I tried to install latest OS update. Recd error installing. IT tried to load the upgrade in Safe Mode. Now system will not boot up. IT says I have to do a clean install which loses all data.

After receiving an error when I try to install the latest update of OS-X, I took my laptop to oour schools IT dept. They tried to run the update in safe mode and then they got an error saying the system could not find the hard drive. Now they want to run a clean install which loses 1000's of docs and pictures. I have Block I exams in med school next Monday and all of my notes and slides are on that hard drive.
The IT dept took the hard drive out and tried to back it up and they said they other computer could not connect or find my hard drive.
    Major panic....
I have Norton antivirus and have never found any viruses on the system. I also have a program called ExamSoft which some other students here have noted they had similar crashes. Not sure if that is the issue...

    Several take home messages here:
always back up before you update.
always back up anything you don't want to lose. Kind of like flossing. Only floss the teeth you don't want to lose.
Norton is very, very bad software, and you should get rid of it.
You don't need antivirus software on your mac. Antivirus software on macs causes more trouble than it is worth.
Your hard drive may be failing and thus may not be salvageable.
You could try booting into the recovery partition and seeing if you can repair your hard drive.
If that doesn't work, then there is a small chance that a third party utility (like Disk Warrior or TechTool) might be able to fix your drive (if it is not failing).
If that doesn't work, you may be able to send your drive and a lot of cash to a drive recovery service and see if they can get your files off it.
In the mean time, get notes and slides from a (smart) friend.

  • Boot image does not exist and cannot read disk label errors.

Hi - I'm having a problem with installing Solaris 9 4/04 on a Netra T1. The Netra already has Solaris 7. I need to get this set up as a jumpstart server but it can't find the boot image. I'm using a brand new bonafide installation disk - not a copy. The system won't let me install/upgrade to Solaris 9 either. I get an error stating that disk label can't be read. I've tried swapping out the CDROM but I still get the same errors. Does anyone know what or why this may be happening? (Oh - and another strange thing - like I said the CDs are the original but there doesn't appear to be a cdrom/cdrom0/s0 directory. The directory I see is cdrom/cdrom0/sol_9_404_sparc/Solaris_9/Tools)
ERROR: Install boot image /cdrom/sol_9_404_sparc/Solaris_9/Tools/Boot does not exist

I appreciate any help at all - is there anyone out there who can tell me what I may be doing wrong?
    Thanks

Hi check that you are booting of the right cd. Make sure it is soalris 9 software 1/2 if that fails then it may well be that your cd is buggered. most likely it is buggered it it cant find the boot image.

  • Failed boot after moving hard drive (IDE not SATA)

    Greetings all.
I am attempting to setup a headless box, and in doing so I am installing Arch on one system (Sapphire Axion A3-M275 Motherboard), then moving the hard drive to the new system (SGS1660, a VIA CLE266/VT8235 based headless rack-solution). I think what is happening is that the kernel does not have the drivers for the IDE controller on the board for the CLE266/VT8235. Does this seem accurrate? And if so, how can I verify the current kernel config, then compile a kernel with everything else Arch needs to boot properly? I am familiar with the old means of setting up a kernel using the 'make menuconfig; make; make modules_install' etc method.
Thanks for the help in advance!

Hi, not sure if this is still causing you an issue, but I just ran into the same problem.
For me, I have a Sharp PC=MM1110 which has no cd drive and doesn't like to boot from USB. To get Arch installed on it, I had to attach it to another PC (via it's docking cradle, which lets it show up as a USB hard drive), then boot the other PC from an Arch install cd and select the USB hdd for all of the partitioning etc.
When I rebooted after the installation, the Sharp wouldn't boot.
First, I had to edit the grub menu entry to point to (hd0,0), at which point I got the error listed in the first post... Failed to parse block device id's.
If i booted into fallback mode, it booted without a problem.
For me, the solution to finally get it working was to boot into fallback mode, remount the filesystem as r/w, and run mkinitcpio -g filename to rebuild the kernel. Once completed all I had to do was point grub to the new kernel image and it booted ok.
Hope this is useful to someone

  • My Mavericks Partition Will Not Boot due to "Incorrect Number of Thread Records", But Windows 7 On Same Drive Does

I got up from my chair at the office to make myself coffee and came back to find my computer powered down. "That's weird," I said,  "I don't remember turning the computer off." I pressed the power button and the loading bar appeared below he apple symbol (as it should do on a bad shutdown) but alas, when the bar got to the end, there was a loading ring, and the computer immediately shut down.
I then held down the alt key and was able to boot up in my Bootcamp Windows 7 partition (on the same hard drive) but I am unable to do a few things with my OS X Mavericks partition
First off I have the entire partition backed up, as I was able to access all of the files and the drive using my windows partition (drive appeared in "my computer" I was able to copy paste everything just fine). Secondly when I boot in the Recovery HD, the "Macintosh HD" partition appears unmounted, I can't erase it because disk utility says that the disk could not be opened. When I try to verify it, it says that the drive needs to be repaired, but when I repair it, disk utility tells me "Error: Disk utility can't repair this disk...disk, and restore your backed-up files."
tldr; I cannot erase the disk, I cannot repair the disk using disk utility in the Recovery HD, but I can see the disk in windows running on the same drive... so at least I have that going for me.
I tried starting up in verbose mode and it failed after 3 tries, I attempted to use the method described here http://african-heart.blogspot.com/2010/07/fixing-invalid-node-structure-in-mac.h tml?m=1 . I have run the method 6 times and nothing has worked. Ideally I'd like to wipe the "Macintosh HD" partition and start again, but I cannot seem to do that through disk utility
are there any methods for fixing the partition/wiping the partition that I am missing?

The same thing is happening to me. I had just click on a form submit button and suddenly the video went dizzy for an very little instant, almost couldn't see it, the screen went black and a message warning the system crash appeared. After that, the system rebooted with a progress bar under the spinning circle and it turns my Mac off when it is fulfilled.
Trying the native Apple hardware test right now to see if it can identify any problem.
I'll post any news here in at most one hour, after the test finishes.

  • Mac Not Recognizing External Hard Drive, I Want to Use the HDD to boot Windows

Let's get this stuff straight first:
The Hard Drive is from a PC that I am not using
The Hard Drive already has Windows 8.1 installed as well as all my documents and data. (from the old PC, of course.)
It does work, however after connecting it to my iMac (late 2014 / 5K Retina) it isn't recognized by Finder, Disk Utility or the (Option) Boot screen.
Yes, I understand I will need to install drivers, so I'll need help doing that as soon as we get Yosemite to recognize the HDD.
What I am wanting to do is use this external drive to run Windows from the boot up screen. But I need OS X to actually recognize the drive in the first place. Then I'll need a little help installing the drivers for Windows onto the Drive, unless those are already installed, since it was originally used in my PC? (I'm not sure how drivers work.)
Nonetheless, if it's not possible to be used as an external boot for Windows, I'd still like to use it to obtain and store files/documents on.
    Thanks guys!
    -Austin

How do you have the drive hooked up to your computer? Did you but an adapter? If so, is it one that is supposed to work with a Mac? Did it come with a power supply?
Some of those USB adapters don't work well with Macs and that could be causing problems. Test it on a PC if possible, just to make sure the adapter itself isn't bad.

  • MacBook Pro 15" (Late 2013) will not install Windows 8.1 Pro under Boot Camp?

Have spent many hours trying to sort this out. I was told this morning in the end by a 'Senior Advisor' @ Apple that Boot Camp does not support Windows 8.1 Pro so effectively it seems like my only option for a new machine purchased earlier in the week is to return for a refund.
This despite the Apple Spec saying "
Windows 8: Windows 8 or 8.1, Windows 8 or 8.1 Pro (Boot Camp 5 only)"
The subject has been aired in thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5474320?start=585&tstart=0 but it has been suggested I post a fresh thread.
I have purchased a new 8.1 Pro license, so this is not an upgrade. I have followed the Boot Camp instructions, including getting the update for this model spcifically, but the nearest I got to a successful install returns soemthing of the like 'Unable to update boot settings' or the like and installation cancels. My machine is a mess I guess now, but in a final effort - does anyone have the step by step 'idiots guide' to working through the setup successfully? I don't want to get involved in massses of messing around with files as this should clearly not be necessary for achieving an advertised solution on a new machine bought within the last week should it?
Appreciate any help - I have up to seven more days left in my option to return for a full refund..... and maybe buy a Dell instead?
PS : We have many Apple products, Air, ipads and iphones so would dearly like to sort this out if possible.
    Thanks for any help...

8/8.1 will install fine but there's some stuff you need to do before starting to ensure no issues
    purchase a retail 8/8.1 license
use only a USB2 flash drive
    get a clean 8 or 8.1 ISO
newer machines are more selective with the ISO for some reason (ISOs that worked to install Windows on many different older Macs would not work)
if you've made lots of changes, hacks and adjustments trying to get this work on your own, you should clean install OSX first, do not restore from time machine and start at step 3 to get Windows installed, you can go back later and copy files back to OSX
if you want to try without clean installing OSX, here goes
open boot camp assistant (bca) and choose option 3 ONLY if it reads 'remove/delete' Windows
open disk utility (du) and confirm that your HD now only has 1 single partition ('macintosh HD' unless you've renamed it)
restart machine and do a PRAM reset
open du and repair permissions TWICE
open bca and choose all 3 options (create, download, install)
from here, the process follows the standard boot camp instructions (http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1636/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.8.pdf) but pay attention to step 3 where you do have to manually reformat the boot camp partition
    clean ISOs

It then comes up with the recovery tools.
I clicked on "Refresh your pc" it then reports "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again".
I clicked on "Reset your pc" it then reports "Unable to reset your pc. A required drive partition is missing".
I have also tried "Automatic Repair" and it reports "Repair couldn't repair your PC".

  • HP Pavilion dv9207us will not boot up

This laptop is less than 2 years old.  One day, it locked up.  Upon hard reboot, nothing showed on LCD.  Connected an external monitor, showed bios coming up, etc.  However, the graphics were all messed up.  On the external monitor there are large green blocks, which obstruct the viewing area.  LCD panel of laptop does not show anything, however, it is powered, and I can see backlight.
With the help of external monitor, I booted up in safemode.  However, nothing doing as expected.  When tried to boot up in normal mode, I was informed to use recovery disc.  I tried to use a clean copy of the DVD that I had made, but did not work.  Error:  Restore7.exe application error.  Called HP who shipped me a recovery DVD - same results.
I ran diagnostics on RAM and HD.  They were both 100% pass.  I took HD out and plugged into an adapter - could back up data files, ran Norton Enterprise Antivirus, etc.  Everything was fine.  I was able to back up data and did not find viruses or trojans.  Finally, I put the HD from HP laptop into another laptop, and I was able to bring up the Vista Home Premium and operate it as I was able to operate it before.
Finally, I've researched on the net about this issue.  I've narrowed it down to NVIDIA 7600 card that is populated on the motherboard.  I've noticed that this was an issue on AMD processors of the similar dv9000 series.  My motherboard is Inteal Centrino Core Duo G73M Chipset with 256 MB Graphic Video RAM memory.
I've called HP and they inist that the problem has been isolated to AMD based motherboards.  I do not believe that!  I have the same symptoms in the same timeframe that others had experienced.
    What are my recourses?

Look at Reflowing which has become somewhat of an art. There are hundreds of videos on You Tube showing different procedures...if you know someone good at this sort of thing.

  • Sat Pro M10 will not boot up anymore

My Sat Pro M10 worked fine until yesterday. I removed the harddrive just to check Part number (as i need to install a larger drive and want to make sure I got it right)and then re-inserted it. Now it boots up as far as the XP Pro loading screen (black background) which disappears and then the screen goes blank. This is what normally happens during boot-up, except that there would be a cursor over the blank background for a few seconds until my desktop appears. Also, when it has stopped at this blank screen the harddrive light on the front of the laptop flashes regularly every few seconds. I desperately need some of the data on the hard-drive (and no, it is not all backed up) so I do not want to use the recovery CD which is just a ghost image (isn't it). The drive is formatted as NTFS. I mention this because when I tried to use the recovery disc to check disc integrity it gave an error message that said the NTFS logfile is not loaded. It will not respond to any of the F8 safemode-type options. I think I have messed up the booting up process somehow by removing the drive rather than physically breaking anything. it seems it can read the boot partition but no further. Can anyone suggest how to fix this, or worst comes to worst a way of retrieving the data from the disc?
    Thanks and appreciation in advance,
    Chris

    Hi Chris
If the system runs stabile you can remove HDD so many times you want and it should have no any influence on anything. I have removed HDD from my Tecra very often and it still works well.
Back to your issue: if there is any possibility try to connect your HDD as external device to other notebook or desktop to see if you can see it and even back up all your important data.
All Toshiba notebooks, I suppose, since two years have NTFS and that is nothing unusual.

  • QuickTime & Security upgrades--system will not boot

Hello. I'm new to the posting/discussion board world, and while I have reviewed other threads I haven't found anything yet to solve my problem.
Let me say that I am not sure of the particular OS version I am using (10.4.8 is a guess). Since I tried to install the QT/security update last weekend, my iMac gets to a point where something (either the hardrive or the fan, or both) are making considerable noise. The machine sounds like it's trying to take off.
Having browsed some other threads, I have done these things:
I booted the computer using my system installation disk; ran Disk Utilities; repaired the disk; and verified disk permissions. Initially, the repair-disk function did not succeed, but I have run it again and it indicated success. I have fixed disk permissions and verified them, again apparently successfully.
When I attempt to boot, the gray screen comes up but after approximately one minute a circle appears where the Apple ought to be and the harddrive/fan ramps up to take-off speed. Out of fear for the system I do not let this condition continue for more than a few minutes and I turn the machine off by pressing the power button for several seconds. It seems clear that it won't boot.
I have not been able to boot into safe mode, either, if that means holding down the shift key upon power up.
I am now lost as to what I can do without attempting to re-install OS X from the disk or seeking other professional help. I sincerely appreciate any assistance in this matter.
    Aaron Fultz
    Ames, Iowa

    BDAqua,
My deepest appreciation for your assistance. Your solution seems to have worked and the system appears to be running as before.
If I may ask two follow-up questions:
    1. If I ensure that the disk permissions are repaired/verified, can/should I go ahead and update my system with the 10.4.11 update?
    2. Do I maintain the "previous system" file on my harddisk, or can I safely delete it?
Thanks again for your help and guidance. It was rather upsetting having my computer disabled like that. I've definitely learned from this.
    Aaron

  • 2009 Mac Pro will not boot up under Windows

I have an Early 2009 Mac Pro system (Mac Pro 4,1) and I've had this system for 3 years already and have been working under OS X with this system ever since I purchased it.
However, when I tried to boot off my Windows disk, something very interesting happens. The Mac Pro WILL NOT boot up off the Windows disk or a known working Windows partition if two monitors are connected. Upon holding down the option key and selecting the Windows partition, I will get a black screen on one monitor (the one connected via Mini Displayport) and the other screen receives no signal and will enter standby and the system is halted. It does not respond to keystrokes, there is no hard drive activity, no measured power increase on the UPS, no apparent network activity, nothing. The only way to exit this scenario (from what I can tell) is to power off the machine, disconnect the display on DVI, power on the machine again, select the Windows partition wait for the system to reach the login window and reconnect the DVI monitor (at which time Windows recognizes it immediately and the system works fine again).
My question to the community is, does anybody know why this is happening and is there a known fix for this? Quite frankly, having to disconnect a monitor just to restart is very tedious and frustrating.
I have two Samsung P2350 monitors attached to an ATI Radeon HD 4870 (512MB, from Apple). One is monitor is connected via directly DVI and the other is using a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter. Both monitors work fine under OS X with no issue. At first, I thought that this may be a driver issue on the Windows side and after installing all the latest updates and drivers the issue is still apparent. From what I can tell, this doesn't seem like a software issue but rather a firmware or EFI issue as this happens before Windows even loads.
If anyone knows of a fix or what to do in this situation, or if you are also having this issue, I would love to hear your input!
    Thank you!
For the record, I am running all the latest software builds on the OS X side (10.7.4, not that it would really matter at this point). I have also disconnected all unnecessary equipment in a trial and error scenario but the results are still the same.
The system passes all ASD testing.
The full specification of the computer and all connected equipment are as follows:
    2009 Mac Pro (4,1) 8-Core
    2x Intel Xeon Nehalem 2.66GHz Quad-Core CPUs
    16GB DDR3 ECC 1066MHz RAM (Apple Branded)
Two OWC 120GB SSDs (One for OS X, the other for Windows 7 x64) - These are in place of my optical drives.
4x 2TB WD Black Hard drives for storage.
Two Samsung P2350 Monitors connected via DVI. (One using a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter).

In Windows I am using the latest (12.4) Catalyst Software Suite, 64 bit of course, downloaded directly from AMD's site after installing the drivers from Boot Camp.
As for installing Windows I used an original (not burned) installation media (Disk is in a pristine condition). And yes, Windows is fine, the problem just seems to be getting the system to boot up Windows with that second monitor. However if the "problem monitor" is disconnected the system boots fine 100% of the time and connecting it later after booting the system will still operate properly.
For the sake of arguement I swapped monitor cables and connected the "second" monitor to the mini displayport adapter to verify that it wasn't a cabling issue and I'm still yielding the same issues.
As for GPU testing, I've played games (Crysis, Grand Theft Auto IV, Battlefield 3, etc.) and I've had no issues with the card or stability.
You would think that Apple would try to find a fix for this, especially considering the caliber of this machine.

  • Reset CMOS, system will not boot

This is a long story but I will try to keep it short:
I just bought a new 875P Neo-FISR and a 3.0 GHz Prescott, which from reading the other posts could have been a mistake. I installed the CPU, memory, and the video card and pressed the power button and received a "CMOS Data Wrong" error. So I tried to correct the problem but when I saved and exited then the system would not boot back up. So, I reset the CMOS via the jumper and tried again. After MANY attempts I change just the month in the date setting. And what do you know...it would not boot back up. The D-Bracket LEDs were: 1-flashing red/green, 2-flashing red/green, 3-red, and 4-red
I must have read almost every post in this forum and tried many things such as:
disconnecting all componets except for video, ram, and cpu
the during boot to recover the BIOS
removing mobo from case, maybe a short
moving the memory to different slots
moving the PSU to a different computer...it works
disconnecting the PSU from the mobo and and removing the battery overnight. The first night I did not disconnecting the PSU from the mobo and I found that did nothing.
Tryed everything that I could think of and some stuff that others thought of but nothing worked. However the last item...removing the battery...did change things some. Now nothing happens, and I mean nothing...no lights, no fans, no buzzing...nothing.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. The only recourse I have left is to RMA the board.

I tried one stick in all of the slots with and without the sound card. That did not work either.
The voltage for my memory is 2.6 so that is what I tried. But if I can get it to boot up again I will try 2.7.
    Tks.

  • PowerMac G5 will not boot up

    Hello all -
I have a PowerMac G5 Dual 2.3GHz (early 2005) that has recently started to have issues. It froze a few times in the last week, and then would not boot up again. I dug out the original install disks, and was able to boot and run the Apple Hardware Test. The hardware test revealed a stick of RAM that was giving errors, so I removed the bad memory and it's mate (since they are required to be installed in pairs). Everything was great for a few hours, and then it froze up again. Had to hold the power button to force it to shut down. Once again it would not boot up - either a black screen, or stuck on the gray screen with the Apple Logo on it. Again was able to boot to Hardware Test from the install disk, and ran the Test again. This time it came back with no errors or problems. Ran it several times, all without any errors. I have reset the PMU, unplugged the power cord for several minutes, swapped memory around to different slots, unplugged everything but the monitor, keyboard and mouse, .... all to no avail. The computer will not start up. I tried to use the CD as a boot disk, but it hangs the same as when trying to boot from the hard drive. The only thing it will do is boot into Hardware Test mode (from the install disk), or Firewire Target Disk Mode (fortunately, since I can at least access my data and make some backups).
This computer has been very reliable up to now, and this all came on quite suddenly.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    PowerMac G5 Dual 2.3GHz
1.5GB RAM (after removing 2 512MB sticks that gave errors)
    OS 10.4.11

Ok, so this has now advanced to the point of being a bit ridiculous.
The nearest Apple store is 45 miles away, but I happened to be in the area over the weekend, so I brought along my G5 for a visit to the Genius Bar. A resident Apple genius hooks it up, powers on, and lo and behold, it boots. What? How is that possible? I have been unable to get past the gray screen for weeks. He mentions that sometimes if you unplug everything, it will help to reset the power management, etc. So I tried to remember, did I leave the keyboard plugged in while it sat in the corner? Dunno, but it certainly booted fine in the store. He then ran the proprietary Apple Diagnostics (very low level testing, much more thorough than the Apple Hardware Test we consumers have access to). Took 30-45 minutes. Came back without so much as a hiccup. Everything checked out perfectly. He could not reproduce any problems at all. Hmm. Well, ok, awesome. It's all good to go!
So, I get home, hook everything back up, and it runs fine. My wife is happy that she has her computer back. It runs for a day or so. Then it locks at the login screen while trying to wake from sleep. The fans ramp up to full speed. Have to hold the power button to shut it down. Restart, everything's fine again... for a few hours. Next morning it is frozen again, and will not progress beyond the gray logo screen. Never gets to the spinning gear. I unhook everything again, wait an hour, and try to boot again. Get a kernel panic. Force restart again, and now is stuck at the gray screen again.
So..... What in the world is going on? All of the hardware has passed Apple's low level testing with no problems, yet it no longer functions. I have a feeling that if I leave it for a week, I will get a few hours use out of it, then it will freeze again.
This is all very frustrating. Anyone interested in a used G5 tower with intermittent issues?

  • Mac Pro will not Boot-Up

My Mac Pro (Early 2008) will no longer boot-up correctly.  After having been in Sleep Mode for a few hours I tried to wake it up, but it would not wake.  I had to manually turn it off.  Upon rebooting I got to the gray screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel.  It seemed to be going like normal, but suddenly the spinning wheel froze.  I tried several times and it still continued to freeze.  I tried to restart in Safe Mode, but it would keep freezing.  I tried to use the Disc Repair utlity on the install disc, and it would seem to work fine for a while, but before I could get into the log in screen I got a gray Kernel Panic error.
I thought that it might be an issue with my RAM so I reset the PRAM settings, that still did not work.  I was able to run the Apple Hardware Test, but both the standard and extended test said that my hardware was working correctly.  Thinking that it might be a corrupted system file or something on my hard drive I put in a clean drive and tried to install Mac OSX once again on it.  But it seemed to be going fine and I received another Kernel Panic error.
Right now I think that I have exhausted my possible tests.  I can either call to tech support, and pay the fee, and hopefully someone there will be able to help me, or I can lug my 50+ pound tower to the nearest Apple Store.
Any advice or help that you can give would be appreciated.

Thinking that it might be a corrupted system file or something on my hard drive I put in a clean drive and tried to install Mac OSX once again on it.  But it seemed to be going fine and I received another Kernel Panic error.
Did that happen while you were booted from the installation DVD, or while you were booted from your usual boot device?

  • Macbook Pro will not boot up normally ***Not Normal Problems***

Ok. I have an older 17" Macbook pro 2.33 (10.6 fully updated) that will not boot up in normal mode. When I boot it shows "blocks" of different colors and will not get past the blue screen sometimes. When it does get passed the the blue or grey screen it is a split screen of white back ground with large black blocks seperating the sides. I have tried swapping out harddrives with a known working one with an OSX image on it-no good. I have tried  swapping out ram-same thing. I reset the SMC and PRAM-only colors changed in the blocks. I have ran disk utilites disk and permisions with no problems. I can't boot into a restore disk using the c key during boot, It locks up at the same screen. Nothing works except safe mode. I can boot into safe mode and everything works just fine with normal screen and all. Now I tried runing the Lion installer thinking it is and driver issue but I can't get Lion to boot to the hard drive and Snow leopard just reboots back to the same screen. So how can I get Lion to install or Snow Leopard?
What can I do? I noticed this last weekend when I tried to reboot my MB Pro and it started this. Well Apple pushed and update last friday - I needed to restart it again and this happends. I thought it was a logic board at fist until it booted fine in safe mode.

Sorry. What I mean is I selected the SL boot up in the start up panel and it would not boot into the cd. The CD rom sounds like it just keeps reading with it slowly loading from grey screen to blue screen to the Block screen. Almost like it is booting into normal mode from the hard drive.
What I can't understand is why it runs fine is Safe mode?
Also why do I get a " this disk cannot be used to start up your computer" message on my hard drive when trying to install Lion in safe mode? Well why not it's the only hard drive in the computer?
The first screen shot is the Tech tool showing everything passed the hardware test is safe mode.
