? to buy - ATI RADEON X800 Mac Edition

Hello,
I'd like to buy one of these to power a 30" display on a dual G5.
Anyone heard of where they are available?
thanks,

Steve
I had purchased the X800 XT MAC and unfortunately recieved a defective unit (it happens) anyway got the rma and returned it to ATI/AMD they provided me with another card (1 week turnaround) it too was defective and wouldnt allow my G5 to boot even!! Yikes!! So I returned the unit to Microcenter (where I purchased the unit) and I am in the process of getting my money back (home office is issuing a check so I must wait 10 business days to get the check). So I like you must now wait to get my 30 inch to where it is really useable.
Unfortunately there are no other options really as the X800 XT MAC is available for AGP and supports the 30 inch (dual link DVI) and has a max resolution of 2048 x 1536 verses the 30 inch at 2560 x 1600 resolution as I have researched this quite exhaustively. Its apparent AGP isnt the future (obviously) and Nvidia Quadro FX at 1600 bucks is clearly outside my budget.
Perhaps someone else knows something different. Do shop around as I paid around 300 bucks for mine, however understand the wait limitations you face once you get that price and note some retailers are discontinuing availability of the unit itself for whatever reason (support may be an issue). Some places are even asking 389 bucks!!
Thanks for letting me know about the 9800 as well. Kinda regretting getting the 30 incher now!!!!

  • Installed ATI Radeon 9800 Mac Edition and know QT Pro 7.1.1 has error's

I have a G4/1.2ghz (OWC Mercury 1.2ghz Processor Card Upgrade)
I added a ATI 9800 Mac Edition a couple of weeks ago so I could contiue using Apple's iLife and now when I try to open a QT movie it sends me to
Apple's QT 3rd party updates and I don't have any idea of which or any plug in I need at this point I have updated my card with ATI's January 2005 update and
all is well except for the QT movie I'm trying to play which is in .avi format and I do know that QT Pro doesn't play some .avi movies but this one played before the installation of the ATI Video Card ?

I don't know how it is related, but I, too added a 9800 Mac Edition to a G4 Gigabit. Worked great for about 2 weeks, then it began freezing during 3D graphic games... StarWars Battlefront is way addictive.
When I finally got around to testing, I found I could no longer convert .avi to dvd through Toast 7. I had also updated to Tiger with QT 7.1
The freezing seems to be related to the power supply. While every indication was that my PSU was over 300watts. Apple now says that at that time they measured power in Amps, just because... hey why don't you buy a new mac....
I am sourcing out a replacement supply and am temporarily back on my original rage 128 card.
I wonder out loud, I have the guts of a few external hadr drive cases, that have a similar power connection. Can one of them be used to power the card.
Does the video card absolutly have to be powered by the internal power supply...?

  • Ati radeon 9200 mac edition pci on my powermac g5

hi rencently bought this card and was wondering if anyone has any experience on this card. is it faster then the stock agp card in the g5? i have tried this on my g4 qs and it actually made everything slower as it was pci. would pci-x be better? thanx all!

Hi, You had me going there for a minute.
I then looked into the specs on this card at NewEgg.
    Dude, it's a 39 dollar card, vs a 5-6 hundred card.
Seems very odd you would down grade a fine high end machine.
I just spent all night researching cards, till I finally found it.
The one I plan on is water cooled, and $800.
If it fits. I haven't verified if it's Mac attack grade.

  • ATI Radeon X800 XT or ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Mac Edition for 30" display

I currently have the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro installed in my G5 2.0 DP and it is running my 30" display, but I am having some isssues when I play DVD's the pictures seems to skip every few seconds like it isn't playing fast enough, or it hesitates. I bought the ATI Radeon X800 XT and wanted to know if that would be a better card before I switch it out.

The X800 is a faster card but DVD playback doesn't put much load on the card, so the X800 probably won't help. If it skipping on more than one DVD, the DVD drive is probably having problems. Cleaning the lens ay help.

  • ATI Radeon 9600 Mac & PC Edition will not work with leopard

When I installed a new ATI Radeon 9600 Mac & PC Edition, 256MB; my Dual 2 GHz G5 (June 2004) will not allow me to drive my Apple Cinema Display while running under leopard, (neither 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 with Leopard Graphics Update).
The mac starts up as usual and gets to the white screen with Apple logo -then the progress ring eventually stalls. The mouse pointer becomes visible and can be moved freely around this screen.
I can connect from other macs on the network and navigate files, but screen sharing results in an all black window.
The Radeon 9600 works fine if I start up the mac with the Tiger installation disk.
I have tried every suggestion that I could find on these boards and elsewhere: zapped the pram, reset the SMU, installed older ATI Drivers, etc...
Of course the G5 is far out of warranty. I've been running Leopard since the day it shipped - so that's out of warranty now, and there is little help to be found on the ATI/AMD website. I'm afraid I'll have to return the card before Apple releases another graphics update.
The stock graphics card that came with this mac is the nVIDIA 64MB GeForce FX 5200 - but it's having trouble keeping up with Leopard's demands - my isight barely works, most special effects in iChat and PhotoBooth are unusable, and of course I'm not given the option to use a transparent menu bar,
I am really good at swapping video cards in the G5 now - but I'm so frustrated.
Does anyone else have any suggestions?
    thanks

  • Radeon 7500 Mac Edition Quicksilver 2001

I have installed a Radeon 7500 Mac Edition video card in my 2001 Quicksilver. This card was an option in the 2002 Quicksilver. I am having problems installing OSX software and notice that Mac warns that it may be necessary to install the original graphics card for installation. I no longer have my original card.
Is the 7500 compatible with my machine? In general the card works fine with my dual moniotrs but I do have problems running iChat with frequent freezes and dropped service.
If the 7500 is not a good choice for my machine what should I buy for dual monitor support and Mac compatibility?

    Hi,
    The 7500 Mac Edition is kind of an oddball. Good card, but ATI doesn't support it with Mac Drivers. You can download the latest Radeon Universal Driver ROM's from here;
    https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folder ID=27
Run the program and see if it helps.
If not, depending on budget, I'd get an ATI 9800 Pro Mac Edition, either the 128MB or 256MB. You will then have the best video card available for a G4, the QS will handle it just fine. I just noticed that Newegg.com has the 256MB available for $199 after rebate, a deal -for the best.

    Dave

  • SB Audigy 2 w/ ATI radeon x800 VPU Cr

Heres the problem, I recently purchased a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Value card, got it installed, got drivers, loaded up a game (WC3), and started playing. Halfway through the game, my computer makes the error sound, closes my game, says VPU recovery message, and my speakers are doing the pop-crackle-screeching noise. I reset my computer to find a "missing NTLDR" error. So I fixed the problem(only way was to reinstall windows), and got all my drivers again, got my computer back to normal with the Audigy2 drivers, I played a song in winamp, then my speakers made a big boom noise and then continualy crackling/popping. So I reset my computer, and I had a hal.dll error. I got that fixed, got windows functioning again, then I decided to try going to Dxdiag>Sound and turned my Hardware Sound Acceleration Level to No acceleration. then I loaded up a game, after playing for a while, it exits the game, has popping again, I restart my computer and lo and behold, another error with hal.dll. Now I have tried so many method to fix this, MANY different drivers, but nothing works, my pc never fails to crash with either hal.dll, or NTldr, or NTdetect, or some other kind of error/missing file. Now im wondering if anyones heard/expiereanced this kind of bull****. Below are my pc specs.

  • Where to buy ATI Radeon HD 4870?

I have just bought a refurb MacPro 8 core (blimey) but want to put the ATI Radeon™ HD 4870 card in it sooner or later, but when I google it there seem to be so many different versions of this. e.g. a 'sonic version' etc, and so on, and they all look different in the pictures so Im really confused as to which one to get.
Can someone please advise me which is the right one and even suggest where to buy?
    thanks:)

You mean Apple are the only suppliers of the one that works with OSX?
Yes, unless you can find another supplier that says their card will work properly with OSX in a Mac Pro.

  • Radeon 7000 Mac Edition

Just got my Radeon 700 64MB Mac Edition, and I am already frustrated of installing it in my B&W.
Up to last week I could play DVD's without a flaw, that's with the old ATI Rage 128, without (first) and with (after) the DVD decoder card.
I have followed the instructions for the installation to the slightest detail:
    - Downloaded latest drivers and ATI Displays from ATI, and installed them;
    - switched off my beloved B&W, and pulled the plug from the powerpoint;
    - installed the card (50 seconds, probably....);
Machine did not startup properly, but eventually I managed to start.
Now the card works, but with the following flaws:
    - DVD's are sluggish. I can manage to play them, but whenever the DVD
player controls are on the screen, the playback gets choppy. This did
not happen with the Rage 128, at all.
    - Startup: before the screen gets blue, the spinning cursor just under the
grey Apple stops spinning, which is something that never happened with
    the old card.
    - Starting from the DW CD (Jaguar 10.2.3), only starts in black and white,
meaning that hardly anything is visible on the screen.
Am I doing anything wrong? I read and heard of other users (many) with the
same type of card installed in Beige and B&W G3 machines, and working happily.
    Can anyone help?
    thanks guys

When your Mac does not start up properly after pulling the plug, you should be suspicious of a bad PRAM backup battery.

  • Display corruption with ATI Radeon X800 XT

I installed an ATI Radeon X800XT card and my 23" Apple display got so corrupted I had to remove the card and get back to my old tested ATI Radeon 9650. The symptoms were as follows: soon after startup, a few white pixels appeared near the center of the display. In a matter of minutes, the amount of white pixels grew up exponentially until they grouped in eight vertical bands, thicker at the bottom of the display. If I dragged an application window across the screen, the window "snowed over" with pixel noise and became unusable. In Safe Mode, the card works well. Of course, in this mode I cannot test it with most graphics applications and Final Cut also does not work.
I have downloaded and installed all the latest (well, 2005) drivers from the ATI support website, posted a support ticket with the manufacturer and am now waiting for its response with abaited breath. Meanwhile, does someone on this forum know how I can make the new card work properly? Thank you for your help.

  • Geforce 7800 GT or Ati Radeon X800 XT?

    Hi!
Im thinking of replacing my Geforce 6600 graphics card with either a Geforce 7800 GT or Radeon X800 XT. What card would be best for 3d work in Cinema 4D?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tom - Norway

    Hey Tom,
I just got my Quad with the 7800GT and it works very well with C4D, there are some things within c4d you can do to speed up the viewport which can be found in the manual, but so far so good and no complaints. I don't know much about the ATI card but the Geforce works great.

  • ATI Radeon X800 XT Mac edition question

I have a 17"apple studio display and a 20" apple cinema display can i run both of theses from this card in my g5 2.7?

    Thanks for the link Patrick.
If I decided to try and atempt flashing the card myself do you happen to know which ATI card would be the best candidate to flash for my G5? I need a single DVI and I think I understand from your post that a FireGL card is needed. I looked at the tools page you posted http://thomas.perrier.name/graphiccelerator.html but didn't notice this type of card listed under the supported ROMs. I did find this page which list FireGL cards and the Radeon models they are based on.

I do plane on checking out the strangedogs.com website but thought I'd ask you which you thought was best.

  • ATI Radeeon X800XT Mac Edition - Upgrade experience

Though it's very expensive, for almost HK$6000, and it took me a month to get it, I was happy to be able to at last do the upgrade from the GeForce FX5200 coming along with my G5 when purchased.
But the happiness faded very quickly when I was using it, and after one full-day of trial I decided to get back to the GeForce FX5200 and become quite happy with it now, as at least it never crashes my system.
I have done a lot of things, but before everything this is the config of my G5:
    Machine Name: Power Mac G5
    Machine Model: PowerMac7,3
    CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (2.2)
    Number Of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 1.25 GB
    Bus Speed: 900 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 5.1.8f7
    Serial Number: (omitted)
    My OS:
    Mac OS X Version 10.4.5
    FIRST IMPRESSION
I had no problem with the phsycial work of putting the card in its place. But the system just booted up with a blank blue screen and a mouse pointer that responded.
To solve this, I put back the FX5200, installed the ATI software from the CD, and then reinserted the X800XT.
Fine..... if only I had been reminded of this. I'm used to carefully reading all manuals before action.
    CRASH
At last, the system managed to boot up and things looked fine at first sight. But in 5 minutes, it crashed in the form of everything being frozen. I could only press the power button for 5 seconds to switch off and then switch back on the G5.
This situation repeated itself and it was quite consistently about 5 minutes.
Software/ROM update came to my mind, and so taking advantage of the 5 minutes every cycle, I downloaded the latest software from ATI and installed it.
    CRASH CRASH
The ATI updates I did were:
    ROM update: aug2005-radeon-universal-rom-update.dmg
    ATI utilities 4.5.7: macosx-ati-displays-4-5-7.dmg
Driver update: ATI 10.3.6 SW Update.dmg
The ROM update required safe boot, and at that juncture I found that safe boot was, and remains to be, the only situation in which the X800XT would not crash my system. But in safe mode, playing a small movie clip still stopped itself in 10 minutes.
    CRASH CRASH CRASH
The latest updates did not bring me any peace. The system still crashed by freezing itself, not only the screen but even the system operation as I was able to hear it.
I then moved on to the internet to check out what other people had experienced. My God, the installation of X800XT has been anything but friendly! Anyway, I got to find a solution.
I learnt from a few users that old ROM in combination with different versions of a file called "ATI ROM Xtender", located in the System\Library\Extensions\AppleNDRV folder, might provide a solution. I had 3 versions each of the two:
    ATI ROM Xtender versions
    1.2.1
    1.2.5
    1.2.7f2 (Newest)
    ROM update versions:
    104
    108
    109 (Newest)
And I tried the 9 combinations, and the result was CRASH CRASH CRASH.....
    RESORT
At last I took the final step I was able to take: re-install the whole Mac OS X, on the understanding it could be some sort of extension conflict (or so called "kernel panic"?). Unlike Mac OS 9, there is no Extension Manager in Mac OS X to solve such conflict.
I tried 2 ways of reinstallation.
First, archived settings and reinstalled. Result: CRASH
Second, I used another blank, formatted, and verified hard disk to install Mac OS X afresh and booted the computer from this new system. Result: CRASH.
    CONCLUSION
    1. I cannot think of any more thing I can do. Any suggestion from the expert friends here is welcome and strongly appreciated.
    2. It just seems to me that even X800XT claims to be built for Mac, from hardware to software they just do not work quite well together. Total mismtach. I don't mind ATI and Apple are not friends, but please let me know if they are not.
    3. I would strongly advise anyone who is going to upgrade to X800XT to make sure, beside $, you have the time and any useful backup disk/software ready to help you in case there be any CRASH for you to solve.
    4. Yes, CRASH may be a fact of life, but for customers it remains unsatisfactory. Even if I had managed to find an odd combination of ROM and software to solve the problem, I would have still found it ridiculous given the burden put on customers.
    5. G5, as the way it is built, seems to be a computer whose hardware can customised for specialised use. But the fact I found is there's hardly any upgrade options. And even I had one now, it is not only unfriendly but also a failure! What a silver tower means beside looking pro?!

I have read the Apple article here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300341
My G5 is of the late 2004, i.e. the time I bought it. So re-setting SMU is done by disconnecting the power supply for 15 seconds.
I have probably tried that as everytime I changed between the 2 cards, I disconnected the power supply beforehand.
One more thing I wanted to add. When I did the re-installation of Mac OS X using the Tiger DVD, I was on the X800XT. There was no crash druing the installation when the computer was booted from the DVD. And after the installation and booting from the new OS, which should be 10.4.0, the system first crashed when I was in the middle of downloading updates using the Software Update of Mac OS X.
