To buy or not to buy, just a few questions

Recently i have been wanting to buy myself a new laptop, and the thought of a apple laptop crossed my mind, i really like how lepoard is going to be,
and i was wondering if this is the laptop i want to have and be able to run the OS in the system
I plan to buy this laptop in about 3 months, so after the 10.5 OS comes out, and i was wondering what i should do and what laptop might be best.
PS. My PC will be my gaming pc and home pc, this mac will be taveled alot and the net and small builtin apps are all that are gonna be on it

I'm thinking of buying a new laptop too. However,
I've had a run of bad luck with 2 of my parents
iBooks (which fell under the special warrenty
extension thing). My Pismo has been great, although
the monitor cable had to be replaced at 5 years old
due to wear at the joint, oh yeah, and I've gone
through 3 power adapters (which I got $30 from that
one apple settlement to buy a new one). But that's
fine since laptops are not meant to last 7 years.
Considering the quality, which mac laptop is the
best? The screen flickering reports on this forum
scares me away from the macbook. Is the design
quality of the macbook pro better?
Pismo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
They are both good units. It all depends upon what you want to do with them. I upgraded from a MacBook to a MacBook Pro because of the MB's weaker graphics circuit. My fan was running a lot when I was computing. This MBP is a lot quieter. Also, I think the MBP is a lot better value. I had almost as much money in my MB after upgrading it, as I got in my MBP. My 2¢.

  • New Macbook Pro owner, just a few questions?

I just bought my Macbook pro around a month ago, I just had a few questions since this is my first Apple computer.
    1. My screen often gets smuges on it, any suggestions on what to use to clean the screen without damaging?
    2. I have a PC that I rarely ever turned off, anyone know whether or not it would be more beneficial to shut down the laptop everynight or keep it running?
    3. Do you suggest keeping up with all of the software updates that become available?
    4. Can I watch DVDs and Blu-ray movies on this laptop? are they able to be saved?
    5. Any other tips / suggestions would be great! Like I've said, this is my first apple computer, after a month I am still trying to get used to it.
    Thanks!

    1. In MacBook: Care, Use, and Safety Information, Apple says:
Dampen a clean, soft, lint-free cloth or paper with water only and wipe the screen. Do not spray liquid directly on the screen.
That's what I do. Microfiber cloths are so effective at removing fingerprints and grime that they can sometimes do it without water, but a little water helps microfiber cloths a lot. Because of the way microfiber cloths work, chemicals are rarely needed. Apple warns against using "aerosol sprays, solvents, or abrasives" because your screen has coatings that can be scratched or eaten away by the wrong chemicals. iKlear products are safe, but they cost significantly more than cloths and water.
    2. I am also one of the many Mac users who rarely shut down or reboot their MacBook Pro. My friends and I routinely go weeks without rebooting, we just close the lid at night and it sleeps. This is great because it allows the Mac to be instant-on: open the lid and all your open apps and documents are where you left them, with zero startup time.
Part of the reason for being able to run for long periods of time is that OS X is based on Unix, which was originally written as an operating system for servers, which require stability during 24/7 operation and long uptimes between reboots.
    3. It is best to keep up with all security updates that become available, since they are about security. After that, you can install other available updates whenever you want. If you don't want to be updating all the time just wait until you want to click the Update button, like maybe updating only on the weekends if you want.
    4. If your MacBook Pro has an internal optical drive it will play DVDs. No Macs play Blu-ray Discs unless they have an extra cost drive and third-party software. You can rip DVDs using software like Mac DVDRipper Pro; I use that and then I run them through HandBrake (popular on Mac and Windows) to convert for my phone, tablet, and Plex for my TV.
    5. In general Macs don't need a lot of maintenance because many maintenance routines that used to be manual have been built into the normal operation of the system.

  • Just a few questions before buying.

Is there any hint of a successor to the current Macbook Pro in the next 6 months or so?
I also would appreciate your opinions on wether or not to get the glossy display over the regualar display, perhaps some pros and cons would be helpful?
    Thanks guys.

    Macbook C2D   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Peter,
I personally would not think about an upgrade to the MBP, if you are ready now, go for it. I got mine in March and I'm VERY happy.
Memory ----- 1GB will be "pleanty" for what you mention you will use it for. I browse the net, use itunes, VPN into my job, use Parallels for online classes I take, download pictures off my digital camera, connect to .mac, use Aperature, and the memory is enough. No I don't have everything mentioned opened at once, but what I need opened at the time, and the response time is great. My 2 cents ----- order with the 1GB for now.
Glossy or Matte screen ---- depending on where you will use it. Outside, in the car, by a lot of light --- get the Matte. I purchased the matte since I work in my car during lunch daily (I take my online classes), and with the glossy - it would be murder to see the screen, the matte is great with any glare/sun on the screen - no reflection. Personally - I'm happy with the matte.
    Good luck,
    Bob

  • About to buy. A few questions

I am considering buying my first Mac, probably the iMac 20" DuoCore. I have been a PC user for 6 years and I am getting tired of all of the negative issues associated with that platform. We all know what they are. My question is: My eyes are very light-sensitive and I would like to know if the iMac, or Macs in general, have Accessibilty controls. In other words, I prefer white text on a black background. Is this possible with the OS-X oper.sys? Other than that, I am ready to sever all ties with Microsoft. Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Where I work, there is a growing number of converts to Mac and they all confirm what all Mac users already know. IT JUST WORKS.
I see many people switching from Windows to Mac, never the other way round. In each case, they are surprised by having and using such a useful computer and why it seems to have been kept secret. There is a good reason that Mac users love their machines and Windows users don't love theirs, it is just that Windows users don't and won't get it.
For measure and balance, I do run Windows 2000 Pro and RedHat Linux on an Athlon 2000XP+ desktop side by side with my own 1" thick 12" PowerBook and 17" iMac Intel (incomparable to anything in the wintel world) as well as a 5 year old 500Mhz Dual G4 desktop which still wipes the floor with the Athlon. I also use an incalculable variety of software and development tools on all platforms; there is simply no contest.
The Mac also has the richest imaginable breadth of useful and creative software which just works. The user is the center of the experience, not the limited imagination of some Microsoft drone who scores a point for each required driver and registry edit and thinks he knows what users want with their wizards and silly ever changing Start menu.
With all this considered, on balance, it is simple closed mindedness that continues to question the viability of the Mac. When it becomes impossible to argue against the sheer mountain of evidence in favour of the Mac, and lack of real evidence in favour of Wintel, they always head back to the received wisdom which is that "macs s@ck". Completely untrue.
    I'm babbling now, aren't I. I think I'll stop now. Yup, that's what I'll do.

  • Buying a tablet. few questions.

    hello,
I am thinking of buying a tablet. As i am embarrassed of Android stability and dissapointed of Apple's policy when it comes to connect iPad to a non-Apple devices it points me out to BlackBerry Playbook. Quite reasonable as I am very pleased working on Q10 smartphone already.
Before buying I need to dispel some doubts. I will use my tablet actually only for two purposes. As a navigation device on trips (mostly as a map) - so I need good GPS (at least like in Q10, it has good GPS), possibility to receive network connection from my smartphone (best via Bluetooth) - as there is no wifi internet in the forest or mountains - and also a battery which can stand such a tasks for few hours. As the only map I use is google maps I need it working - I knwo there is sideloading, but is GMaps working on Playbook - i know it works on BB10.
The second purpose is networking. I and my girlfired currently share Desktop computer and I like to not have a laptop. I prefer tablet. Can sombody confirm that facebook games like Monster World work on PlayBook, as she likes it for relaxing?
I am total noob when it comes to playbooks, BlackBerry doesn't seem to make a bid for new customers - can't find informations I need. What OS is on PlayBook 7.0, or 2.0? I am confused in that matter.
I know it's different OS than BB10, but I am currently using 1.2 of 2.0 GB, so is 1 GB on Playbook enough to smoothly browse network, or google maps?
Are there versions with screen of bigger resolution than 1200x600?
Can I somehow connect phisical keyboard to a tablet (pc keyboard or dedicated one)? - I hate touch keys
    Thank you all in advance!
    Marek

  • I downloaded Firefox but when I try ro use the site it does not do anything, just ask the question, do you want to restore the last session, what do you suggest I try?

I have repeated the download trying to solve the problem but I get the same results. I used to have Firefox and used it all the time, I do not know how I lost it, but one day the browser just quit. The bookark, favorite works just not the browser.

  • Buying 800mhz imac few questions , tiger ?

Just curious if 600.00cdn is a good price for a g4 800mhz superdrive imac, with 756mb ram and a 80gb hard drive, dont know much about this model and what it goes for.. also, how well does tiger run on this system.
Thanks any help would be great

For internet and storing music for your iTunes, that is more than enought, but GB is a pretty RAM intenseive program from what I understand. I do not use it myself, but the general opinion is that 1GB is needed for it to work at its best. You certainly may feel its performance is fine with the 768MB.
All in all, it's a fair price for a well enough upgraded G4 iMac. It will run Tiger and the iLife apps very nicely.

  • New 2 Mac Just A few Questions.

So I have a new macbook. I just ordered the apple wireless keyboard and mouse and the dvi adapter. I plan on hooking it upp to my 42inch lcd. What settings do I have to go in and change for all of this to happen and me being able to close my macbook but still being able to use it without the hard disk turning off.

Hi Ultravox. I just got the same rig as a refurb, tax free no less due to this being my state's tax holiday. Good call on the memory as I just ordered my extra from Crucial a few days ago and it's already here - and WAY cheaper than Apple's.
My 2 cents, the nVidia card gets a pretty bum wrap. While it's true the ATI would be better for gaming, I don't think it will make any difference for straight video editing that is, without a lot of realtime motion effects. To the extent you have such you can just render to view, which will be really fast with these CPU's. I've looked at all the benchmarks and what it means for games is to get playable frame rates on some of the 3D titles you will have to lower the resolution. Not ideal, but I think acceptable for a light duty gamer. I have to do this now on my G4, which has an even less capable video card than the 7300. I considered buying a new 2.0 GHz machine and getting the ATI as a custom option (if new) or add-on kit (if a refurb), but decided I could live with the 7300 for a year or so and upgrade later. To get the 2.66 with the ATI would have busted my budget. For long-term use, the processor upgrade is worth more, since graphics cards change constantly and can be upgraded easily. It may also be that Apple comes out with some more graphic card options going forward, as I'm not that thrilled with some of the complaints I read on how noisy the ATI can be. It would be nice to have an option in between the nVidia 7300 and the ATI. Here is a fairly positive review of the 7300, although, admittedly not being used for any gaming.

  • Thinking about getting a new macbook pro, just a few questions first --

    Hey guys,
I've been a mac user for about 5 years now and I love them. I've had a white 2.0 c2d macbook for about a year now. I primarily used this macbook for work, and my PC desktop for occasional games. I was thinking about getting a mac pro to do some gaming since my PC desktop broke about 2 months ago, but recently I've been getting more expenses so my wallet has grown thinner. So now I don't really have enough cash to get the mac pro. I also can't sell the macbook for a mac pro because I need something mobile for work. What I can do though is sell my macbook and get a macbook pro.
My question to you guys is, how do you like your macbook pro as a desktop replacement? I have a dell 2407-HC monitor as well to use with it. Does it game well over boot camp? I know cider hasn't yielded good performance, so please stick to bootcamp reviews. I'm not looking at anything really really intense, as I don't really have time to do as much gaming as I used to, but it'd be nice if it could run the orange box (mostly team fortress 2), dawn of war dark crusade, assassin's creed (when it comes out), and possibly the warhammer online mmo or age of conan mmo.
The other question is whether or not I should wait for a new one. Macrumors says that it's been about 150 days, and the macbook pros are updated every 180 days or so. I've already waited a few months since my desktop broke to see if the mac pro was going to be updated for penryn, but now the situation has changed, and now it looks like I might have to wait if I want a macbook pro. So, to wait or not to wait?
Any other opinions are welcome as well. Thanks.

    What's the beneift of buying 2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 instead of 2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7?
Benefit of the QUAD core and the BASE UNIT 13" is extra cores for "heavy" photo and video editing and dedicated graphics

  • Just a few questions about DVD Ripping and Final Cut 6

    Ok,
Here is my first major concern. I have a wedding that I cut on the Final Cut Studio. After I burnt it to a DVD, I erased the main footage. However, the groom wanted to add something so I went into my backup files to get the information but just so happens that my backup hard drive crashed and it will not recognize on any Mac. (Tried 3 different Macs including 2 PowerMac G5’S and a Power Mac G4) Anyway all I have no is the DVD. I was wondering if anyone knew any good ripping software that I can rip this DVD back to a QuickTime. I have tried a few programs but the quality is just horrible.
My next question is does anyone know when Final Cut Pro 6 is shipping?

Did you lose your autosave vault with the crash? You could open your autosave and grab the last cut and do a media manager capture so you wouldn't have to re-edit or capture all of the media again.
Also, there are people who can get the info off the drive for a modest fee. If this was a paying gig, consider it part of the cost of having done the project. If the groom was satisfied and the project was complete, I guess you could argue that an extra fee is in order if he wants a different version after the final version was already delivered and agreed upon. Otherwise you kind of owe it to him to do whatever it takes to give him a final output.
Make a backup tape as well next time. That way you can recapture and add, then re-backup and re-compress. Lots of re-ings.

  • Just a few questions...

This is concerning iPad, but it is also concerning Apple devices as a whole. Now, don't get me wrong. I absolutely love Apple and will most likely never switch to another device, be it phone, MP3 player or tablet (can't afford a Mac yet, but that's my goal one day). However, I am curious as to why its user-friendliness is not as user-friendly as other devices, such as Android. With Motorola, Android, Windows, you are allowed to change everything as you wish, such as text message alerts, new mail alerts, etc. Yet with Apple devices, you are forced to just deal with whatever sounds and themes they offer. Like with my Android phone I used to have, and Blackberry as well, I was able to change the theme, text alerts, etc. But when I updated to the iPhone 4, I could only change the ringtone alert and had to make do with the text alerts that came with the phone. I also do not care for the new mail alert with iPad and wish to change that, but unfortunately cannot. Now, I know that if you jailbreak Apple devices, it unlocks all these cool features that one would assume were included in a 500+ dollar device. I am just curious as to whether anyone here would think that Apple might grow to be less strict concerning their devices one day or are we stuck with whatever they think we need? This again is not a rant or anything or hatred towards Apple devices, but a question as to why they did not make their devices more personal. I am happy with my devices, but sometimes I wish I could do more, without voiding the warranty like jailbreaking does.

I have been reading that there will be changes coming in the next iOS 5, however it really is speculation at this point and until Apple unveils anything we won't know for sure.
I use my devices for it's media purposes because that is the field I work within. The points you brought up don't really make much difference to me. I find Apple devices very user friendly, what you are referring to is a more personable/unique device tailored to you.
Now I don't disagree a lot of people would like to do that but no one can speak for apple and that is not really what these discussion boards are for.

While in USA using the account here under my husband’s phone account (our home is here)
HOWEVER, I work in Brazil and there I have a phone account on my name.
Can I use the same phone (where all my information is stored) and just change the chip of phone company?
Seems pretty silly on the first moment on reading the questions, BUT for me, it means a lot as I could have just one phone, as already have to carry so many other electronic stuffs!

    Depends on where you buy.
ALL U.S. iphones are carrier locked and CANNOT be unlocked.  If you buy an iphone in the U.S., then you will not be able to put a different SIM
Some countries sell unlocked iphones.  These can be used with other SIM cards.

  • Can I buy just _one_ key?

We have small children. They take a toll on our iBook. The computer is on its fourth keyboard, and now the "f" key is missing (again). As you can see, I can type the "f;" the little plastic bulb is still there, as is the scissors-type device to which the key attaches. But the tiny brackets on the bottom of the key are broken, and the key will not re-attach to the "scissors." I kind of hate to spend another $150 for yet another new keyboard. Is there any place where I could buy just the plastic "f" key by itself?

As always - it's amazing what you can pick up on eBay.Keys
