To buy, or not to buy Time Capsule?

I am new here so if this question have been here before I can just apologize.
I am thinking about buying a 2TB Time Capsule. I thought reading the discussions would make my decision easier, NOT! After reading so much about DEAD TCs I am not sure at all if I should buy it.
Does anyone know if this problem is solved on the 2TB TC? Hoping for an answer so I can order it as quick as possible (or not). =)

I have had a dual-channel TC since they first came out and couldn't be happier. If you have an Apple computer with the Apple Care extended warranty this may cover your TC. This applies if you purchase the TC within 2 years of the purchase of the computer.
My environment includes an XBOX 360 (wired), Roku HD-XR (wireless N), Apple TV (wireless N), 2 Airport Express units providing wireless N bridging for a Slingbox Solo and my Blu-Ray player, 20" iMac (wired), MBP 13" (wireless N). My TC is the 500GB model so I use the internal drive as a NAS and connected a 2GB USB drive for the TimeMachine service to the MBP and iMac. I also have the guest network active and available for friends and visitors.

How do I connect to Time Capsule from a Windows 8.1 machine which is on a Windows domain. I have been able to connect from a Windows 7 machine on a Windows domain to a Time Capsule. Airport utility is not displaying the Time Capsule Win8.1 machine.
I have checked that the firmware has been updated to 7.6.4 . Similalrly the Win8.1 machine has been loaded with the update specified in another discussion.

Firstly how are you connecting to the TC.. wireless or ethernet?
Please open a command window and ping it.. ping by name and by IP address.
If ping succeeds at least by IP it should work.
    In windows explorer type
\\10.0.1.1 (or whatever the TC ip is.. that is the default).
Having the airport utility for windows loaded can help the process. As it loads bonjour for windows.
7.6.4 firmware on the TC is useless. It works better on 7.6.1
If the ping does not succeed by either name or IP address yet you have internet through the TC, then your network is setup wrongly. You are have firewalls blocking local IP. Take down all the firewalls.

  • My MAC is not recognizing my Time Capsule.

My MAC is not recognizing my Time Capsule.  It's been 12 days since an automatic backup and it seems to be making more noise and vibration than normal.  Also seems warmer than normal.  When trying to select the Time Capsule disk, I get an error message that says, "There was a problem connecting to the server "Powells Time Capsule".   Don't know why but the Apple Support website doesn't recognize the serial number.  The unit is approximately 5 years old.

The serial number is really not important at this point, since the Time Capsule is at least 2 years past the warranty coverage period, and this would be assuming that you have AppleCare in effect on one of your Macs. If you did not have AppleCare, then the Time Capsule is probably 4 years or more past the warranty coverage period.
The Time Capsule is basically designed for about 3-4 years of use, so it is long past the time when you should replace the Time Capsule.  Apple will not offer repairs on the device, even if you are willing to pay them. Even if you might be able find repair parts, the cost of repairs for a replacement power supply and new hard drive would likely run more than the cost of new Time Capsule with a brand new warranty.

  • I have not used my time capsule as a back up in a while

I have not used my time capsule as a back up in a while & I would like to start using it again, but it give me the following error...
"This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 195.55 GB but only 93.26 GB are available."
Can I delete the old files form the b/u disk to make more room for my new back-ups?

Yes, for sure.. if you only have the 500GB TC, and you don't need the old backups.. or if you have stored files on it copy them some place else and then erase the drive. It will fill up again quick enough anyway.

  • How do I restore notes from a time capsule backup in Yosemite?

All I want to do is restore previously deleted notes form a time capsule backup - something you could easily do in previous releases (I probably haven't tried this for a few years but it used to be really simple)

This procedure will revert the whole Notes database to a previous version. It's not possible to restore individual notes.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.apple.Notes" selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Trash, then restore it from a backup that predates the unwanted change. If you back up with Time Machine, enter it and select the snapshot from which you want to restore.
Log out or restart and empty the Trash.
If you synchronize Notes with iCloud or another network service, the notes you restored may be immediately deleted after you restore them. In that case, temporarily disconnect from the Internet, for example by turning off your broadband adapter, and restore again. Copy the contents of each note to a document in another application, such as TextEdit. Reconnect to the Internet. If the notes are deleted, recreate them from the TextEdit document. They should then synchronize to the network.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • HT1145 I am setting up my Time Capsule for the first time, all of my connections are right but, AirPort is not recognizing the Time Capsule or my network!

I am setting up my Time Capsule for the first time, all of my connectiions are correct but, AirPort Utility is not recognizing my Time Capsule or my network?

Try connecting your iMac to the Time Capsule with an Ethernet cable to see if that allows AirPort Utility to "see" it.

  • Do not reconnect to Time Capsule, AppleTv or my others Mac...

Need help, I search on the web but did not find anything about this issue. After I wake up my iMac from sleep, Time machine does not find my Time Capsule and it does not appear in my Finder either, same for our 2 other Mac (MacBook and Mac mini) they don't appear in my Finder on the iMac. AppleTv does not appear in iTunes as well as the shared library from the other Mac. The only way to get it back is to reboot then it will be ok until the next time it goes to sleep.
AirPort Utility scan does not find Time Capsule or AirPort Express....but I have full WiFi signal and no problem to connect to internet
Any idea as to what I should do?
I don't have this issue with the MacBook or Mac Mini. The only software that I installed on my iMac recently and not on the other is Caffeine, can it be the root cause? I can't remember if I had this issue before I installed the software.
    Thanks!

    Hello FoxFamilyVA
Check out the first article below to go through some troubleshooting options to get your iMac to connect to your Time Capsule. I would go through and remove it from the list of known networks that you join and then add it back in. I would also recommend that you try and create a new Network Location to see if there is an issue with your current configuration.

  • Considering buying time capsule have some Mac address related questions

    Hi,
as mentioned above I'm considering buying a time capsule for backup and wifi purposes.
My internet providers connection depends upon a set Mac address from the first computer you register with, the system works with any router which then clones the MAC address and issues a wifi signal to all computers. I don't have access to the origional computer which we registered our connection on, it went to the great computer graveyard in the sky and I have no record of the Mac address.
I Would like to use the time capsule system as a router and remove my existing router. my questions
can the time capsule spoof or clone a Mac address ?
I Don't want to be offline while we deal with technical support as they are quite inept sometimes.
Is it in this case really plug and play ? Can I just plug it in set it up on my Mac and away it goes where other non Apple devices can use the wifi.
Without the existing router the cable that comes into the house connect directly to the ' original ' computer and the Internet only works on that computer
hope  someone can help me I would like to purchase this device

The Time Capsule cannot clone a MAC address, so quite simply, the product is not for you.

  • Questions before I buy Time Capsule

    Hi All
I hope you can please help with my questions before I go and buy a time capsule. I currently have a 5 month old 2.4ghz mbp and a PC running Vista. The PC is connected via ethernet to a billion 7402GL and the mbp connects via wireless. I was going to buy an external hard drive to store data and I thought I might try the time capsule as it will be networked.
I am not 100% sure I know how time capsule works so any info would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to work out the setup in my head I have had a read through these forums but I thought I would ask specific questions in relation to my setup.
When I connect the time capsule to the billion can I still use the billion for wireless or do I have to use the time capsule? Also do I connect the TC to the Billion using ethernet or wireless? I want the mbp to access the data on the TC via wireless and the pc via ethernet. I will be getting an imac once I sell my pc so that will also need to connect to TC. I will mainly use the TC for storing data but I might start using time machine as well. Is it possible for a ps3 to access TC?
I will be attaching a printer to it so I would want to be able to print from any computer that connects to the network.
What would be the best setup? Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

If you already have a working wired/wireless network, and a spare ethernet port on your router, just connect the TC to the router with an ethernet cable. Turn off the TC's wireless, and it'll work fine.
No need to change any of your connections, you can carry on using your existing router.
Printing will work fine from any computer connected to your router (or to the TC, if you wish), but the printer driver needs to be installed on each computer, and the printer has to be one that works with the TC.
I don't think that there's a way of using the TC as a server with a PS3. The PS3 needs to see a DLNA server - I don't think that there's any way to get this running directly on a TC.
You can get a Mac to run as a DLNA server (application called "MediaLink"), and it might be possible to get the Mac to link to the TC. This way, you could access the TC from the PS3, but the Mac would have to be switched on for it to work.

  • Looking to buy Time Capsule. What is the best way to connect printer to network?

Looking to buy a Time Capsule. I have a wifi canon printer currently. If I connect the printer to the Time Capsule via wifi will it be shared the same as if I connected the printer via USB? I would like anyone who connects to my network be able to use the printer. I want to know the best way to configure it so that is easy to connect. Thanks
    Dustin

If I connect the printer to the Time Capsule via wifi will it be shared the same as if I connected the printer via USB?
Yes, assuming that the printer is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal.
I would like anyone who connects to my network be able to use the printer. I want to know the best way to configure it so that is easy to connect
Follow the steps provided by Canon to install the printer and have it "join" the wireless network that will be provided by the Time Capsule.

  • Should I buy Time Capsule?

    Hi.
I'm a little lazy when it comes to backing up files, and so I'm seriously considering buying Apple's +Time Capsule+, since it does it all automatically.
But I've read some reviews in Apple Store, and people seem to either hate it or love it.
    What's your honest opinion?
    Is it worth the money?
    -AM*

Whether you should buy a Time Capsule matters on a few things.
    * Do you have a laptop that moves around the house a lot or multiple laptops? If yes, then a TC is a good investment. If you have a desktop or just one laptop that usually lives in one spot, then you can use Time Machine with an external hard drive for much cheaper.
    * Are you comfortable with or willing to learn about networking? To really put the TC to good use, it helps to have a good baseline of experience setting up home networks. Because it is Apple, it's pretty user friendly for the surface functionality, tho.
    * Do you have multiple computers working off of one media collection? If so, run it off of your TC hard drive or an attached hard drive. I love the iTunes synchronization program Syncopation--add music to one iTunes library and the shared drive and it will pop up in the other libraries too without duplicating the file. I also have the Apple TV and the whole ensemble works very well--my friends are quite jealous.
    * Do your wireless devices have 802.11 N capabilities? The TC is fast if you have the right cards in your computers and other devices, but if you're still on G and will remain there for awhile, then maybe you should wait.
    * How budget conscious are you? How attached are you to Apple? If you're really comfortable with home networking, get a good N router and an NAS drive for cheaper.
    * Do you like support boards like this one? My experience has been somewhat iffy with Apple's networking devices -- the firmware updates often seem to knock out a feature or make us come up with a work around. When the whole setup is humming, I'm pretty happy with it.

  • There are multiple MAC's in my house and I am considering buying Time Capsule to use as a file sharing device. Is anyone doing this? Pros/Cons?

I have multiple MAC's in my house. I would like to create a file server environmet. I am considering using Time Capsule. Is anyone doing this? Pros/Cons?

The Linksys should be about as fast as the Time Capsule. So you might as well connect the Time Capsule to the Linksys, disable sharing and wireless.
Solution two is to use the TC as the router, wireless and network drive. This would save the power the Linksys needs. What is the Linksys connected to? a separate modem?

  • Thinking of buying Time Capsule - How Fast?

I have a macbook using an old LinkSys wireless router. When the router is hooked up to my macbook via ethernet, the internet speed is over 8 megs but the best I can get from my linksys wireless connection is 3.5 megs of speed. Thinking of upgrading to the Time Capsule for wireless backup plus hopefully a faster wireless experience. Can anyone report about your speed using Time Capsule as your wireless router?
    Thanks

I get a connect speed of 300mb when in 'n' only wireless mode. When in mixed mode I get 130mb. I keep it in mixed mode so I have a single Wireless network across 5 devices and can roam with anything WiFi enabled. If my iPhone was 'n' then it would be different.
I do get better throughput than with the Netgear Router but the Apple is sensitive to positioning. If you are only getting 3.5mbs how far from the base station are you?

  • Can not connect to Time Capsule hard drive when I am not on its network.

If you can help me, I will be forever grateful!
I had a airport extreme with a hard drive that I used to back up my computer and to access my files when I am on the road. (Everything worked perfectly)
I switched to the Time Capsule.
I am now unable to connect to my Time Capsule drive when I am on the road.
I get this message: The server "time capsule name"may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.
    Some notes:
-I am using the same exact modem at home I have been using this whole time
-I am connecting using the same connection I did when I connected with my airport extreme
    -I can connect to mobileme
-My mobileme name and password are in the advanced options in the Capsule
    -My firewall is OFF
-My back to my Mac option is ON in Mobileme preferences
-I have the most up to date OS package
-I have the most up to date capsule version
    PLEASE HELP!

    Hey,
I have excaly the same problem.
In my case, i can connect remotely to my mac mini at home, but not the time capsule.
    Anybody have any suggestions ?

  • Latest Airport Utility v6.3 does not find my time capsule

After installing the latest vestion of the airport utility on my MBP I can no longer find my Time Capsule in the utility rendering unusable. Anyone else seeing this behavior or have any suggestion to correct the issue.

You really need to have the latest firmware on your devices (7.6.3). I am thinking your devices (whether it be an airport extreme or an airport timecapsule is not set up right, for what ever reason. Perhaps you need to make sure you are connected to the right network. Select the wifi icon in your menu bar and make sure you are in your network.
Are you able to see it using airport utility 5.6 ? (that is the version before 6.2 and 6.3). Although the latest airport utilty (6.3) in my opinion is much easier to work with.
    Otherwise...
Are you comfortable hard resetting it... (holding a pen to the reset button for several seconds, while the light blinks amber).  This will temporially disconcect you from the internet and you will have to reset everything.
