To combo update.... or not?
I've read several threads about the pros and cons of using the combo updates vs. the single updates ( such as 10.5.4 combo update or just the single 10.5.3 to 10.5.4 updater). I'm still a little uncertain about which is best. So I started this thread to ask the gurus to once again post their advice. Sorry if I'm being repetitive but just trying to clear this up. I'm currently running Leopard 10.5.3 on a MacBook Pro with no problems.
My preference is to let Software Update do the heavy lifting. Plus, it shuts down some services before installing any updates. Here's a snippet from my system.log when I installed the 10.5.4 patch this morning.

10.8.2 combo update will not install
I have a Mac mini late 2012, Mountain Lion 10.8.2. I face a problem with Safari and I thought that installing the combo update might help. However, at the "Destination Select" appears the yellow warning sign along with the message " OS X Update Combined can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update".
Any ideas ?.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8076/8333135612_dc9c307e24.jpgGood luck - if you want to do an erase and reinstallation, you can do so by holding down the Command, option and R keys whilst booting. If you just want to do a new install of the OS, just hold down the Command and R keys whilst booting and go from there. The 'special edition' that your machine needs will be downloaded and installed.

Combo Update Will not Download Only 20MB
Am trying to download the combo-updater for 10.5.2 and am only able to get 20mb out of the 300+ file.
I've tried this on two machines and two networks.
Would appreciate a suggestion. ThanksFrankns wrote:

Have you been able to DL these size files before? I suspect your ISP. Try DLing another similar sized file from another server.
It could also be the Apple server. Wait and try again later.
There is nothing in the software that I know of that would limit the size of a DL. -
Updates after Combo update reinstall
I had some problems with alerts and notifications.
I tried to reinstall the Combo update for 10.5.5 to fix those problems. Unfortunately I found the fix right after I started the update. Not wanting to break my system I just let the update finish.
Now that I'm booted again I wanted to install all the updates (e.g. security update 2008-007) again that I had installed after the first install of 10.5.5, but prior to the reinstall of it. (I hope that it makes sense).
To my surprise I see that there are not updates available. Are those 'updated files' not overwritten or can Software Update no longer tell if I actually do need those updates. So does that mean that I just don't need other updates or do I have to manually install those?Barry Hemphill wrote:
Hello ruud:
As nero indicates, reinstalling the OS X 10.5.5 combo update should not affect the other updates. If I were you, I would let things alone.
Incidentally, you can find a listing of previously installed updates by going to:
system preferences>software update and clicking on the "installed updates" tab at the top.
Barry
That list/log only shows the automatic update installs, not the manually DLd ones.
The proper place to look is in the main Library (Not System/Library) under Receipts.
There may also be a few in the local user LIbrary that were installed for a specific user. -
Are combo updates totally independent on more recent non system updates?
Hi everyone!
Would reapplying the 10.5.7 combo update switch back to safari 3.2.3 (which was included in 10.5.7), when you already have safari 4 installed?
And if so, would safari 4 (and every update that came after the combo) show up in software update again, even though a receipt for it already exists in /Library/Receipts?
So are combo system updates totally independent on more recent non system updates, or would it mix up things (there was also additional RAW image support in the 10.5.7 combo and later came" Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.6")?
Just generally interested, what really happens, if reapplying the combo for possible troubleshoot is ever needed.

reapplying combo update will not affect any other updates. they are independent.

Good day. I too am having a printing issue after the last security upgrade. I spent some time last night reading about possible fixes. The only one I could find that might work for me was the re-down load of 10.5.2 in the form of the Combo download as opposed to the upgrade. So i downloaded it last night. This morning I went to install it and it won't allow me to. Says my computer is not suitable or whatever. I am currently running 10.5.2. How do I get my Mac mini to accept this? It would sure be nice to be able to print again. Thanks RR

Time Machine and AirPort Update 1.0 prevents Mac OS X 10.5.2 combo installation; fix
It appears that installation of Time Machine and AirPort Update 1.0 -- which instates the ability to use Time Machine for AirPort-connected USB disks ("AirDisks") -- changes the build number of Mac OS X 10.5.2, disallowing reinstallation of the Mac OS X 10.5.2 combo updater. Reinstallation of combo updaters is a highly effective workaround for a variety of problems after significant system updates.
The updated system build causes the error message:
"This volume does not meet the requirements for this update."
when attempting to re-apply the combo updater.
The fix is to trick the Mac OS X installer into thinking you are using an older build by launching the Terminal (located in /Applications/Utilities) and entering the following command:
sudo defaults write /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion ProductBuildVersion 9C31
You should then be able to properly re-apply the Mac OS X 10.5.2 combo updater. NOTE: After re-installing the combo updater, you must also re-apply the Time Machine and AirPort Update 1.0 and Security Update 2008-002 (v. 1.1 if applicable). Otherwise you may encounter build number mismatch issues in various applications.
You should only enact this fix if there is a high probability that re-applying the Mac OS X 10.5.2 combo updater will resolve an issue manifested by Security Update 2008-002 or Time Machine and AirPort Update 1.0. -
!0.5.4 Update did NOT eat my Mac!
I ran Verify Disk, downloaded the 10.5.4 Combo Update and installed. Then, ran Repair Permissions.
-mjmacjack wrote:
nerowolf is correct on the Combo not being needed if your system is in good shape. However, every now then a system update can exacerbate an error you never knew you had. 9 times out of 10 the delta update is fine but the Combo is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. That is why I use it.

For a normal combo update I would agree. For example the combo update for 10.5.1, which had everything including the kitchen sink, but I wonder if these newer combo updates are different.
I suspect that the larger combo update checks for the version currently running and only uses the necessary files to update to 10.5.4 and does not look for specific files that may be "bad" as some earlier updates may have done.
I still prefer the manual downloaded update for these system updates rather than the "offered" updates via the software updater.
It's possible that for those who have chosen to ignore 10.5.3 for whatever reason, that the combo update will not necessarily be the answer, and might cause some complex issues that should have been fixed earlier. If 10.5.3 did not install, I don't think 10.5.4 will be a "fix" -
I've been running Panther 10.3.9 successfully for a long time. There are a few programs I'd like to use that require Tiger and I realized that Tiger retail disks were getting hard to come by and expensive, so I decided to buy one when I found it for a decent price.
I installed 10.4 (running repair disk and repair permissions prior) and then ran all the possible updates from Software Update. I did not select them all at once, most of them one at a time, while repairing permissions after each of them. Shortly after, things were not right.
The first thing I noticed was that I could not put the computer to sleep with either the Apple > Sleep or through the settings in Energy Saver. Expose was flakey also, it seemed to work intermittently. The eject button on the keyboard also worked intermittently. Then, with Activity monitor I would see the following items not responding: loginwindow, System Preferences and Disk Utility (not necssarily at the same time, but at one time or another.) I suppose there may have been others issues, but these are just some of the things that I noticed.
Startups, restarts and shutdowns took a long time. However, the progress bar on startups after the grey screen visually moved exceptionally fast and seemed odd.
These issues also occurred in Safe Mode.
An archive and install back to 10.4 produces a perfect running system, none of these problems occur.
Since my initial update attempt, I've tried to update with the manually downloaded 10.4.11 Combo Update (PPC) with the exact same results (no sleep, expose issues, not responding issues, slow startups, restarts and shutdowns, etc.)
I've archived and installed and updated four times - only keyboard, mouse, ethernet cable and apple speakers were attached. I'm currently sticking with 10.4 until I can find something I can do to troubleshoot this issue which may allow me to get a problem free update to 10.4.11.
Note that my computer does lose the date and time settings when powered off and today I ordered a new PRAM battery. Could a dead battery be contributing to my issue, even though 10.4 is fine?
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Julie...only real low level kexts like old drivers for Universal Power Supplies & such, or real Haxies that dig into & change the OS somewhere.
So, if old drivers and haxies might exist, how do I go about finding them? The only program that I have that I think may be considered a haxie is DockExtender 3.1.3, http://www.codetek.com/dockextender/ (stills seems to work.) It was in my startup items when I initially performed the combo update. Since then, only iCal related items are in my startup items. Subsequent update attempts have been ran when DockExtender was not active. Also, is it note worthy that I have a non-system icon for my hard drive?
My feeling so far is that it's the HD or RAM, Tiger is twice as hard on & demanding of both.
My hard drive is a Seagate 200 GB (utilizes only 128 GB) Ultra ATA/100 7200 RPM 8 MB Cache installed around March 2006. It still has a 2 year warranty. Are you speculating that it just may not be suited for Tiger?
My memory consists of three strips of Corsair VS256MB133 G that I installed in February 2008 - these came as a warranty replacements due to a bad strip of another part number that they did not stock any more.
I don't think it's any of the APPs you aren't running.
In terms of my applications, so far I've updated Firefox (uninstalled some incompatible add-ons and themes.) Identified Font Doctor 5.1.2.9 has likely not being compatible, because it quits when selecting a folder to move troubled fonts to when diagnosing. I questioned Extensis Suitcase 10.2.2, but found out that if I trashed the Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS that the font activation errors were resolved. Safari has crashed on me a few times, but it is still version 2.0. It also crashed in 10.3.9, forcing me to use other browsers. Can I update Safari now? Software Update does not show Safari and I don't know if the combo update is the only was to update it. I'm still investigating other applications compatibility, but the true test won't happen until I run the combo update and am able to run my applications on 10.4.11.
If you had a Firewire Drive to Install to & try, that would be great.
I do have an external firewire drive, but it contains a bootable backup of my 10.3.9 system right now. I'd hate to tamper with it at this time, due to my current situation. I can check on borrowing one if necessary. Would this prove out the question regarding the hard drive and since it would be a clean install = no possible haxies or old drivers lingering around. I also have my old internal hard drive that I could use but, this would be the original from this mac and although it worked fine when I removed it, maybe it would not work well with Tiger.
Thanks,
Julie -
10.4.11 Combo update not up to date?
I DL'd the combo update, and applied it to our MacBook (10.4.10). All went fine, but when I check 'Software Update', it tells me I need hundreds of MBs of updates to perform.
Is this correct?
I support a few Macs in our family, some are on slower connections. I was hoping to take this combo update on an external HD, and update them w/o needing to wait a long time for downloads. But it looks like they won't be up-to-date, unless I do that. What is the point of the combo update, if I have to dl 100's MB anyhow?
Will Apple update their combo to make it more current? Should I wait?
TIA - mwau{quote:title=cornelius wrote:}
Actually, you could have downloaded the latest Tiger Combo Update 10.4.11 which would have included some of the individual updates you see in SoftwareUpdate. Then go to software update and install the Security ....
thanks, but... I did DL the combo updater. It is way out of date. Part of what I was hoping to accomplish was to not spend hours DL'ing all this stuff at the site (with a slow connection). I wanted to do it ahead of time, at home on my faster comnnection, and have it all ready to go.
What is the point of the combo update, if I have to dl 100's MB anyhow?
The Combo updates inlclude all updates, OS, Security, apps etc., up to the time of the release of the Combo update. Since all supported OSs are kept up to date, there are individual releases in between major Combo updates. Pretty neat system, considering you can always have an up-to-date system without much hassle. It is easiest to install the updates as they are released. Set up you Software Update application to check for updates weekly and you won't get as far behind.
Good luck.
cornelius
And that is the (Apple's and now my) problem+, 'up to the time of the release of the Combo update'+ which was last November, about 8 months ago. It is a neat concept, but it isn't all that useful when it is that outdated.
Updating weekly is a problem. This is on computers from my extended family, and they are not savvy enough to do a backup before updating, etc. So, I back them up and update them, and I can't do that once a week.
All I'm saying is, for these combo updaters to be as useful as Apple describes (download once, update several computers), they need to keep them more up to date.
Thanks for all the suggestions, some will help as work-arounds.

X11 not starting after upgrading to 10.5.4 using the combo update
Because of a bug in Package Maker included with XCode 3.1 I ended up breaking my complete OS. After re-installing Leopard and using the Combo Update to 10.5.4 I am not able to run X11. I was able to use it prior to re-installing, but then I got the upgraded incremental via the online update.
It reports this on the console (a lot)
/usr/X11/libexec/x11-exec: Unable to find application for org.x.X11
It seems that this has already been reported to Apple, who acknowledged it as a bug. Is there any new from Apple on if / when / how this issue can be resolved other then by installing a separate application ? Will installing the Xquartz package allow me to install the fix when it becomes available ?Search these forums for X11. There's been some recent traffic on X11.

10.4.6 JPEG issue not fixed by the Combo Updater
Hi,
I have the Safari/WebKit issue of JPEGs not displaying (Safari, NetNewsWire) and running the Combo Updater just doesn't fix my issue.
Does anyone have any other tips? I have tried this 4 or 5 times.
this is the Combo I am trying:
12:10 backspace:~/Desktop% openssl dgst -sha1 MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.6PPC.dmg
SHA1(MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.6PPC.dmg)= c9fde5a23bcebd08149301b7ad300881a563c398
mini Mac OS X (10.4.6) 2gb/bluetooth/airportWelcome to Apple Discussions
The Combo Updater fix has been the usual remedy.
Two suggestions:
Make sure "display images" is checked in your Safari Preferences>Appearance panel.
If it is checked, move your Safari preference file (.com.apple.safari.plist - search for it in Spotlight) to the trash. Restart Safari. If there is no change, move the preference file back to its original location (User Library>Preferences folder). If it does work, go to Safari Preferences and restore any custom settings. -
IMac not waking up from sleep after 10.6.6 combo update
Prior to update everything working fine, permissions repaired, file structures sound, no issues. After update, iMac won't wake up properly from sleep. Moving mouse (either Bluetooth or wired) has no reaction. Hitting key on keyboard (Apple aluminum extended wired keyboard) causes desktop screen to appear, but the spinning gear/pinwheel appears in screen center, and continues to spin. This continues and continues, no reponse from keyboard/mouse. Only work around has been to force quit computer and reboot. Problem repeats next time computer goes to sleep. Repairing permissions has not effect on issue, but now list of permissions getting repaired is very lengthy. Causes? Solutions?
Macster,
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job. If you own one, run it first.
After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.
Then, Try downloading the 10.6.6 Combo update, from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse,Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.

Combo updates not loading.
I was at 10.6.4 tried updating to 10.6.7 Combo would not work. Tried 10.6.8 disk image wouldn't load. Now mail won't work. Tried 10.6.6 combo - won't load. I'm on dial-up so I can only download when I bring my computer to work. HELP
Go to an Apple store or AASP with a blank DVD or 2.0 GB USB flash drive and ask them if the would put the 10.6.8 combo updater on it for you.

Clients not getting Combo updates from server
I will try to explain the problem with my limited English knowledge.
My software update server works. The clients already update from it.
My server has downloaded and enabled the incremental AND combo 10.7.4 updates.
My clients have 10.7.3 and they can get the incremental update to 10.7.4.
When i choose to serve only the combo update from my server (by deselecting the incremental update) the clients think their software is up to date.
For some reason i am certain if my clients hade ≤10.7.2 OS everything would work fine.
Any solution?I was able to solve it in the end. I had an ACL on Core Switch blocking traffic from AP to/fro WLAN/WLSM Switch. The initial traffic goes through the AP's and access switch (authentication and broadcast) to WLAN/WLSM switch through Core, thereby blocking layer 3 traffic and not layer 2 (authentication).
You might need to check your radio on your client (a = 5. Ghz or b/g = 2.4Ghz) to see that it corresponds to what is configured on the AP.
