To compress before export or after export
I have just exported a 1 min 16 sec video in FCP to flip4mac studio to make it into a wave program so that the college can use it on the web site.
They also want it compressed. Should I have compressed it before it took an hour to export it into a wmv file? Other question is what preset should I use for compression for use on a web site which given their equipment it will be streaming video?
I am asking these questions as I am a neophyte, as if everyone could not tell by my question. But this is my first project of merit and the footage is all of ITALY for their study abroad program.
Any help will be appreciated.

WMV is already compressed video. A "wave" program would be one that handled uncompressed audio. It's generally the case that you will need to try different compression settings to find what looks the best for a given data rate, and so rather than tie up FCP every time you want to do another test, just export a DV file and then send that repeatedly through Flip4Mac to try different WMV settings.
What you'll end up with may depend on how instantly you want users to see the video, and what connection speed you expect them to have. As a point of reference here's a WMV that I made at about 400kbps, using Compression Master (a Flip4Mac competitor):
http://kidzbop.com/videos/7/index.do?sid0=3&page_id=24&mediaId=7
A lot of the glitches you see in the video are in the original uncompressed file, which gave Compression Master a harder time, but the results are not bad for the data rate.
The frame rate and the size of the video are other variables for you to play with, along with the data rate. Start off by deciding the data rate, and then take a guess at what you'll get away with. As a very rough guide, 320x240 at 15 fps would work well enough in 300kbps. If you have more data rate, try faster frame rate or bigger picture.

Do clips need to be rendered before exporting project to video camera?
I am in the process of exporting an Imovie project back to my video camera for storage on a tape. When I start the export process I get a message that says clips need to be rendered prior to exporting. When I click the button to render clips Imovie goes through the process of rendering the clips and after several minutes the Imovie project starts to export to the camera and runs for about 2 seconds and the Imovie quits.
Imovie also gives the option of not rendering the clips.
Do i need to render the clips before exporting them to my video camera?
iMac4,1 Mac OS X (10.4.9) Intel Core Duo, 1.83 GHzDoes the project reside on an external drive? If so, make sure the drive uses the Mac OS Extended disk format, which iMovie requires.
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4176921#4176921
The crashes are most likely occurring because of external factors, not because of a flawed rendering routine. These can include the wrong disk format, QuickTime add-ons and obsolete iMovie plug-ins.

Do i need to render the clips before exporting them to my video camera?
It may depend on what type of clips they are. If they are photos imported with the Ken Burn checkbox turned OFF — which are not rendered as they are imported — iMovie will ask to render them. Do NOT allow iMovie to render the photos at this time for there's a bug that adds lots of jaggies to the images, reducing their quality.

Any way to determine .mov size before exporting?
Is there any way to tell how big the file size will be before exporting?
Is there any way to tell how big the file size will be before exporting?
If you are using one of the matrix preset options, yes. Simply hover your cursor over the "info" icon for the preset you plan to use and the last item on the displayed info line will be an estimate for the output file size. If going with the "Export Using QuickTime" option, you will have to estimate the file size manually by multiplying the combined total audio plus video data rate in KB/s or MB/s times the duration of your file in seconds. -
How should I tag content created in a master page when addressing accessibility before exporting to Acrobat? I can't add the content to the articles panel because it's locked. I would also like to know how I should tag my cove content. I don't want the reader to get lost in content other than the body of the report, but I also don't want to ignore some content completely by tagging it as artifacts. What should I do y'all?
Thanks,
JoshHi Rob,
From the screen shots it looks like your script is not formatted properly (you may refer to 'Paladin Script' in 'Sample Project' to get an idea of how the script should be formatted.).
Further please follow the steps mentioned below to use Story to PP workflow.
Create a new Film script in Adobe Story
Create scene heading – INT. LOCATION – Day (these will show up in the outline view panel on left hand side)
Hit enter, hit TAB
Enter the name of the speaker, hit TAB or ENTER
Copy over the transcribed text
Build your script this way
Number scenes from the production menu
Export ASTX file for your script : File->Export->.astx
Open Premiere Pro
Create a new project, bring in media
In the project pane, find the "Scene" column
For the clip that contains the spoken text, assign the same scene number to the clip as you have in the story script (lets say both are scene 1)
Click out of the scene box in the project panel in Ppro
Right click on the scene that you just assigned a scene number to and select – attach Story script
Select the .astx fle you exported in step 8
Click ok
You should now see the script data in the metadata panel for the clip in the metadata panel.
You can now run speech to text based on "Embedded Script metadata" to time align spoken word to the script.
Let us know if this is helpful.
Thanks

Do I need to render before exporting?
I have just put together a small project with three sequences in it. Nothing crazy, renders in about an hour on a PB G4/1Ghz. My question though — do I need to render before exporting to a Quicktime movie? Or will it render automatically before exporting?
Thanks,
Kristin. On a PB/G4, an hour isn't that bad. I started editing on Sawtooth G4s, and had render times of 2-3 hours for not much video. Of course, it all depends on titles, layers, effects, etc.
Well, if you think about it, exporting a movie to Quicktime IS rendering. I don't think FCP is going to stick a blue "Unrendered" box in, or encode at Dynamic RT quality when making a movie file. -
Set Field as text before exporting to excel
HELLO GURUS,
i have a program which exports material numbers and other relevant data from sap tables to excel sheet.
certain material numbers contain text 'E' in between the material number (Eg. 17700E0056). When such data is exported to excel, Excel treats these as exponential numbers and converts them to scientific notation (1.77E+60).
How do I export the data as it is?
Is there a way that i can convert it to text format before exporting it to excel..?Hi,
try moving the values to a CHAR field before download to Excel
or
when building your field catalog , specify the field length same as of that fields data element.
eg. your material number is of char 10.
so set yout outputlen eq 10.
g_flcat-outputlen = '10'.
this works.
Thanks & regards.

Controlling level of JPEG compression when exporting from iPhoto 6?
Hi all,
I'm wondering whether one can adjust the level of JPEG compression when exporting images?
I'm still on iPhoto 4 that unfortunately doesn't offer this option and by default produces fairly large images that aren't well suited for web presentations.
I'd be happy to upgrade to iPhoto 6 for that feature alone.
Cheers MartinHI Martin,
There is no compression option in the File>export window. You can however input size dimensions so a 2592x1944 can be exported to any 4x3 value such as 800x600 -
Pre-activities in source system before export
Hello Experts,
Please share reason why following activities needs to be done before export:-
1) No switching of operating modes takes place while a system is being copied
2) No upgrade-prepare is performed
3) No incremental conversion is in progress
4) No canceled or pending update requests should be in the system.
Thanks
S.BASISHi
Refer below for details;
When operation modes are switched (based on the definition from its time table), the work processes (WP) are redistributed in the active instance.
This means, when WP used as a dialog process (DIA), it can be switched for use as a background process (BGD) or vice-versa, i.e. depends on the WP type defined in Operation mode.
While switching Ops Mode, WP may not be switched immediately instead WP is set to be switched when next possible ( if WP is busy in its current status, with either DIA or BGD) but this switch is more risk and or possible to get into error mode while system (means, WP) is busy with its export or upgrade activity. So SAP advise to deactivate Ops. Mode switch.
Best Regards

Can I make 1080i into progressive before exporting to DVD?
This excellent post explains how my HV20 1080i60 footage can be made progressive by using the ProRes setting:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306389
However, doing this sextuples the file sizes, and I have 50GB of footage on this project and needed it all on my MacBook, so it was a no-go.
Is there a way to apply this ProRes now that I have my project edited in timeline (4 minutes) before exporting to DVD? Or could I somehow use the ProRes setting itself (rather than one of the DVD export settings) to export the project to burn on a DVD in DVD Studio Pro?
Or is applying a Deinterlace filter going to do the same?
I would keep the framerate at 29.97, as it is destined for broadcast.
Thank you,
MaWThank you very much for superfast replies.
You are right about the broadcast, I just checked the Viacom submission specs, and for HD it says “MTVN requires delivery of 1080i (16 x 9) aspect ratio program material, at 29.97 frames per second (59.94 fields/sec) for broadcast.”
It would be quite silly to go from i to p to i.
I just wanted to do everything I could to make it look less sharp and videoey (being a $1,000 CMOS camera...)
I am now trying to add some grain with the CGM plug-in...
Very interesting about the Deinterlace Filter vs. Frame Controls.
Which one of the four should I select?
(Fast (line averaging), Better (motion adaptive) Best (motion compensated) and Reverse Telecine)
I would want the best possible result, of course.
Also, should I leave the ‘adaptive details’ box checked?
For future reference, if I wanted to export 1080i timeline and make it progressive, could I still follow the article instructions and select Reverse Telecine (I’d probably keep the framerate at 30)?
This would seem so much easier than having to do the pulldown on ALL your footage before starting to edit...
Thank you

Is the rendering essential before export with AME?
Hello guys!
My sequence has red and yellow lines. This means I have to render it for preview. I don't want to render it because I 'm sure for the preview result (I did the same with other projects)
It needs to be rendered before the export with AME or not?
I'm not sure, but once I forgot to render warp stabilization effect and the blue line appeared on my footage...Hi Yiotal,
You should not have to render before exporting a project either through the integrated or stand-alone version of AME. If you got a blue line in your footage, it must have been a bug in PP/AME. I've had errors exporting projects when using linked AE projects, so outputting bugs do exist.
Rendering is meant for smooth playback while editing (especially clips with a red bar. Any decent system will do fine with the yellow bars). Even if you do render everything before exporting, never use those render files in your output (i.e. make sure the 'Use Previews' box is UNchecked). I've done some tests and the image quality you get when using render files is inferior.
Hope this helps!
