  • How do I stop iChat/Address Book image picker attempting to connect to unavailable server?

    I'm using Mac OS X Lion. In iChat, if I click on my personal image then select Modify Image, I get the image picker that allows you to change the image, take a picture from iSight, etc. In Address Book, I can get to this same or similar window when I double-click on the personal image placeholder.
    In both cases, a spinner starts up in the lower left corner and after a few seconds I get an error stating that "the connection to server XXXX has failed." This message will pop up continuously until I close the program. The server that it is trying to connect to is a local Mac OS X Snow Leopard server that used to be part of the network but no longer exists.
    By setting up a DNS entry to get it to attempt to connect to a server that does exist and using Little Snitch, I've been able to deduce that it is NetAuthSysAgent trying to make a TCP connection to port 139 TCP (netbios-ssn).
    First, I find it odd that a Mac program trying to connect to a Mac server would use NetBIOS. I also find it odd that either of these programs would need to connect to the server.
    I have a new OS X Lion server but I no longer join to its directory services. As the issue seems to be some configuration left over from when I was connected to that server, I tried joining the new server and then unjoining to see if that would clean up the settings, but that did not help.
    Performing a find . -type f -exec grep -l "<server name>" {} \; revealed two files:
    .viminfo
    ~/Library/Application\ Support/SyncServices/Local/TFSM/com.apple.Keychain/data.syncdb
    The latter was a SQLite database that did not revel anything very legible.
    I've search high and low for a setting that points to this old server name to no avail.

    First off I want to thank you for sticking with me through this, it's nice to have somebody to shoot ideas around with, it made me think up ideas, what I'm trying to say is, by just writing this down in this thread I solved my own problem. Linc I already deleted almost all of the Login items previously, as I did have the same idea, that something in that spot was trying to connect to the desktop through the network, that didn't work, but for some people it could be a problem. When you first mentioned, "make sure that new windows don't open to a folder on the server.", that comment made me look around for any folders connected to the server, then in my last comment I mentioned the word "alias", turns out that was the problem. In my users folder on the Macbook Pro, I had 2 folders that were alias folders, one was the download folder and the other was the Movie folder, I made new folders and put copies of everything into the folders, then threw away the alias folders and renamed the two new folders I created with their original names, presto no more problem.
    Must be getting old, cannot remember making any alias folders, but I probably did, probably had some great idea to save hard disk space on the Macbook Pro, only has 250 GB disk, the Mac Pro has over 8 Terebytes of space so I thought I'd use it probably, bad idea, sometimes I get too Geeky for my own good. Again, Thanks Linc for sticking with me on this.
    There were interesting ideas on the internet, seems other people have run into similar problems, one suggestion was the terminal to check for any "open processes". link was here, if interested....  http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/25639/why-is-my-mac-constantly-trying-t o-connect-to-another-server
    I'm going to mark your last comment as being helpful, as actually all of it was helpful in forcing me to find those pesky alias folders.

    My new iPad with Retina Display is not able to connect to the Wi-Fi of my new Time Capsule. It use to connect, but now it just spins and spins and never connects. I've tried rebooting everything many times.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • There was a problem connecting to the server message - displayed when pressing printer email address

    HP Photosmart B210, Windows 7...was able to print from iphone yesterday but now will not print. One the face of the printer if the ePrint symbol is pressed for the printer address the message "there was a problem connecting to the server" appears. I can find the device with my phone and on my computer. I can print from the computer but not phone

    I understand you are getting unable to connect to server error message on your printer. I would first unplug router and printer for about 1 minute. I would plug router up first then printer. I would then try to enable web services. If not successful and you get same error message. I would follow these steps.
    1. Obtain your printer's IP address
    a. This can be done by pressing the wireless icon on printer.
    2. Enter the printer's IP address in a browser.
    3. Select the network tab at the top of the page.
    4. On the left select networking.
    5. Select Network Address (IP)
    6. Select Manual DNS Server
    a. Manual Preferred DNS should read 8.8.8.8
    b. Alternate DNS Server should read. 8.8.4.4
    7. Select apply you might get a warning just select okay.

  • HT4623 I have an IPhone4 S which when using Outlook suddenly displays the following warning: CANNOT GET MAIL.THE CONNECTION TO THE SERVER FAILED

    Hello,
    I bought a used Apple IPHONE 4S about 6 weeks ago. For all this past period, it was working beautifully. This morning, I started having poblems with connecting JUST on OUTLOOK or Hotmail and on Microsoft Exchange. All other programs, such as Gmail, Yahoo as well as other apps, such as Facebook, Whatsapp, Facetime, are ALL working properly.
    the One problem I am having is when I try to log onto my Outlook ( ex Hotmail) account, I get a window with the following warning:
    "CANNOT GET MAIL. THE CONNECTION TO THE SERVER FAILED"
    I have done everything to solve it from taking out the card to switching it off to resetting the network to deleting my account to re-starting ..NOTHING worked.
    PLEASE can you advise me what to do? The Network server was working great. So what happened and how can i fix it?
    Thank you
    Nina ...

    The issue isn't with Apple/iphone or your network.
    The issue is with Hotmail, there have been a ton of threads on this already with other user having issues.
    You'll have to wait until hotmail resolves the issue.

  • How can I disable incesant rambling alarm "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading" in FF17?

    In using FF 17.0.1 in a WinXP/SP3 notebook (Acer) while traveling abroad I get unrelenting rambling and totally inconsequential display alarms "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." The page in question looks perfectly fine and there is NO problem whatsoever in its display. The only problem is this annoyingly useless alarm, which forces the screen display to the tab where the supposed error occurred when one is in a different tab -- in a couple of instances, this absolutely unnecessary, forced jump to a different tab has made me lose data being entered in a different tab.
    The notebook is extremely lean in its booting process -- no shared DLLs preloaded; no crapware; limited essential start-ups; trimmed unused or irrelevant services. The alarm occurs:
    (1) with FF and the OS in either normal or safe mode (i.e., both safe mode, both normal mode, or one safe mode and the other normal mode);
    (2) using different Western European ISPs;
    (3) using different DNS servers (either default European ones, or manually selected top-tier U.S. servers);
    (4) and with a number of different web pages (such as many in sites of news organizations) but not in all pages (for instance, none of the different Google server pages).
    The alarm does NOT occur browsing the same pages with either Chrome, Opera or IE.
    I have not been able to find a clearly marked entry for such an alarm in about:config, and am weary of start changing alarms settings blindly. The text of this alarm is not found in firefox.exe so it must be in one of its associated libraries. Given that this alarm is COMPLETELY WORTHLESS, especially in its manic wanton conditions, can some one give me an informed opinion on how to disable it? TIA

    Thanks for responding, David. Using <Esc> and <CtrlW> might reduce the time in returning to the other tab, but does little when the triggering of a wanton alarm is very frequent. The connections I have used were extremely reliable and fast. I am using at this moment a 54 Mbps WiFi connection that lives up to its ratings in downloading & uploading data; yet, as shown in the attached image, I still get this worthless alarm. I do not know if this problem happens with my regular ISP since I have been using this tiny notebook only when traveling -- will test that once I am back mostly for curiosity, but even then if then the alarm were not triggered this would be of little consolation, since other browsers do not have the problem right now).
    As a moderator, I urge you to ask the Mozilla-powers-to-be why there is no way to turn off the alarm with, say, a true/false switch in about:config (mind you, there is still old-versions junk in this config list, so it isn't we are talking about amending the constitution). Complains about this fugly alarm can be traced in the web as far back as 2010 at least. Besides, what is the advantage of the alarm for the average user? When FF users are still posing amazingly basic questions in forums of Firefox or Mozilla support, such an alarm ought to be _off_ by default and should be an option of advanced settings menu. This annoyance shows how much the critical focus on keeping a simple GUI uncluttered by trivial or higher-level messages still needs to evolve for Firefox, which I have used it since it was known a Firebird. Guess will have to switch to Chrome now while abroad.
    Happy Holidays

  • On my I pad mini I keep getting "cannot get mail" the connection to the server failed. but everything is Ok I can get mail. Why do I get this message??

    On my I pad Mini I keep getting the message "Cannot get Mail" The connection to the server has failed.
    But this is not the case everything works OK so why do I get the message

    An iOS fluke or mail app glitch maybe. Not sure anyone will know why you get it. Do you're ever close the mail app? Try closing it and reset the iPad and see if the message goes away.
    Assuming that you are running iOS 7, in order to close apps, you drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the Mail app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
    Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Sharepoint list dataheet view error "Cannot connect to the server at this time. You can continue working with this list, but some data may not be available"

    I have a List which is having around 14000 items in it.while opening that list in datasheet view it is giving error .
    Below is a summary of the issue:
    After selecting datasheet view beow error occurs:
        "Cannot connect to the server at this time.  You can continue working with this list, but some data may not be available."
        "Unable to retrieve all data."
        The item counts displays say 100 out of 14000 items.
    Exporting List to excel is giving only 2000 records out of 14000 records.
    Other Observations   -
    This is happening to only one list on the site .There are other lists in the site whose no. of records is equal to 8000 to 9000.They are working absolutely fine without any error.
    Also, If I am saving this list as a template and creating another list with it ,then it is working absolutely fine with 14000 records,so the issue does not seem to be related with no. of records as the template list is working fine.
    I have checked the Alternate access mapping setting ,its fine.
    It should not be related to lookup,datefield or any other column as the list created from it template is working fine with all these columns.
    I checked below links also ,but doesn't seem to work in my case.

    I have spent two days to resolve this issue. Microsoft has released two KBs with reference to this issue...but are not appearing in search results at the top.
    I am sharing my finding.
    1. First install the
    KB2552989 (Hopefully you might have already installed it. The KB detetcts it and informs the user.)
    2. Then update registry by adding new key for data fetch timeout as mentioned inKB2553007
    These two steps resolved the issue in our environment. Hope it might help others as well.

  • There was a problem connecting to the server ... OS 10.8.4 + WD NAS

    Dear all,
    first my configuration:
    iMac from mid 2012, MacOS X Mountain Lion, 10.8.4, iPhoto 09 v. 8.1.2 - all software updates done and up-to-date
    MacBook Pro late 2011, MacOS X Mountain Lion, 10.8.4
    NAS WD My Book World Edition II (white light), 2 x 1TB (configured RAID : 1TB mirrored), original firmware (01.02.14 with MioNet built on Thu Feb 9 14:11:48 CST 2012 ) NFS, AFP enabled
    a win 7 laptop and plenty of other devices
    everything on a LAN with GB router + WiFi
    I have my iPhoto library on my iMac, but the photos (the originals) stored on the NAS. I have the option "copy photos to library when importing" disabled. So I guess iPhoto has a reference / link in the library to the original files.
    Everything used to work fine until some weeks ago. Not sure what happened but suddenly I got the error message "There was a problem connecting to the server ... Check the server name or IP address, and then try again. ..." when I tried to import photos stored on my WD NAS.  When I want to display any photo stored on the NAS - same thing.
    Now I guess I have a bunch of gray hairs more while trying to get this fixed.
    I tried so many of the tips posted everywhere including booting in save mode, deleting the .plist files (first I actually tried to clean them using Xcode first before deleting them), etc. I cleared out KeyChain. I removed all recent entries (folders) and recent servers from the "history". I tried to connect as guest or named user. There are also no "logIn items" pointing to the NAS. I even tried to disable / enable AFP + NFS on the NAS, not to mention countless restarts of all the machines
    One other thing I noticed: Before that problem occured I was able to select the NAS in Finder and it would show me all the shares. When I selected one of them it was mounted automatically. When I select it now I get "connecting" for a loooong time and then "Connection Failed". Most of the time (not always!) however I am able to get in via "Go -> Connect To Server - smb://<nas server name>). And suddently after that also selecting the NAS in Finder shows me all the shares! Hoever even this not in 100% of all cases. I can replicate this from the iMac and the MacBook.
    I do use an external HD for TimeMachine to back up my data (directly connected via USB). No issues there.
    Not I really don't know what to do any more
    Do you have any ideas? Did anyone ever get a response from Apple with a useful solution that really hit the core of the issue?
    Thank you!

    SOLVED!! and I want to share the solution which worked for me with everybody here. Ultimately I had to install nettalk 2.2 on my NAS as described here: http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/netatalk2-2-on-whitelight . A nice description on how to do that can be found here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1102423 .
    One last remark: When asked about the "DHX2 login process", I opted to install the original version, so I can confirm this one works too.

  • '"Connection Failed" : The server "rrnas01" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again' message

    '"Connection Failed" : The server "rrnas01" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again' message keeps displaying whenever I try to open any Adobe CS5 applications (except for Adobe Acrobat Pro). It displays until I click "OK" about 15-20 times or so and then will finally let my program open.
    I have tried deleting files within my Library/Preferences folder and turning off/deleting login items within my system preferences as other forums suggested but nothing happened. Spending 3.5 hours on the phone with Adobe and completely uninstalling and then reinstalling the entire CS5 Master Collection didn't work either.
    Also, it may be helpful to know that my programs worked fine for about three weeks then when we got internet and changed the password (the join, not the adminstrative password) with the wireless network "ScubaSteve" (which I've used with no problems at my old apartment) it started acting up. I have never seen "rrnas01" before so I don't know at all where it came from. I also installed the free 30 day trial of Suitcase Fusion 3 recently, but thinking that could also be the cause I have uninstalled it, and still no help.
    Please help me! And please keep in mind I don't know all the computer lingo that a lot of the people in these forums seem to know. Thanks in advance for ny help you can give me.

    It may not be possible .. there is a major bug between Mountain Lion and the TC where the TC disk goes off the radar of the computer.
    Lion is also affected but not as badly.
    7.6.4 seems worse than earlier firmware.. so back to 7.6.1 or 7.5.2 if that is possible.
    Obviously that is not a solution for a later Gen5 TC.
    Reset to factory after the firmware downgrade. .use all network names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    If the TC is the main router set the dhcp to a very short lease time.. eg 30min.. and see how it goes, or try a longer lease like 99days.
    I prefer the very short lease but response has been mixed.
    Use ethernet not wireless.. ethernet is always more reliable and stable than wireless.
    And last .. a nightly electric timer that powers off every night at midnight for 1min.. would not be the first device we have suggested a fix that amounts to beat the unit to the punch by forcing it to reboot since it is unstable.

  • How to make the client connect to the server at the command prompt?

    I found this code on IBM's website, it was a training session on servers and clients using java.
    The code compiles fine and the server seems to start up properly when I use java Server 5000. I think whats happening is the server is running and listening for a connection on port 5000.
    When I try to run the client I get the following error.
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: main
    I see a start() method but no main. As far as I know, applications should all have main, it seems as if the person who wrote this kinda confused applets with application. Not that I would really know what happened.
    If you have time, could you tell me if there's an easy fix for this? I would love to have this client/server working if it isn't too much trouble. As I have looked all over the net for a free client/server applet that will actually let me see the java code and none of the free ones do allow getting to their source.
    Most of them allow you to customize them somewhat but also have built in advertising that can't be removed.
    This is the closest I have come to finding one that lets me look under the hood. But alas it doesn't work out of the box and I don't know what to do to fix it.
    Heres the code: Server:
    import java.io.*;
    import java.net.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class Server
      // The ServerSocket we'll use for accepting new connections
      private ServerSocket ss;
      // A mapping from sockets to DataOutputStreams.  This will
      // help us avoid having to create a DataOutputStream each time
      // we want to write to a stream.
      private Hashtable outputStreams = new Hashtable();
      // Constructor and while-accept loop all in one.
      public Server( int port ) throws IOException {
        // All we have to do is listen
        listen( port );
      private void listen( int port ) throws IOException {
        // Create the ServerSocket
