To-do hangs Mail
Hi, I was about to figure out if To-do notes creating features will be useful for me or not and...every time I create a to-do item (no matter if it's made via contextual menu or by clicking on a button) it hangs my Mail strongly.
Here is the log which I get after I 'force to quit' Mail

Rules hang Mail.
I have a lot of rules and a several hundred mailboxes. When creating a new rule, Mail will intermittently hang when opening the preferences panes with rules, choosing the destination mailbox, or applying the new rule. I notice in the Activity Viewer has many many mailboxes that are briefly noted as "writing changes to disk". When creating a rule is successful, these flash up and quickly go away. When Mail hangs, the progress bars are various states of frozen stripes (like normal barbershop poles but stuck) or not displayed at all. I get the beachball and the Force Quit menu shows "(not responding)" . I've left it overnight, so this doesn't recover. After a reboot, I can make a few rules, but it will eventually hang. A reboot sometimes (but not always) allows a few more chances to make rules, but lately has been hanging as soon as I open the Prefs pane.
I've deleted many old rules and used Rebuild on almost all mailboxes (50 at a time not to hang Mail again), but no success. Why do rules cause Mail to hang?
Running up-to-date OS 10.6.7 and Mail 4.5 (1084).Hi Stanley,
In the Mac Mail Menu Bar click Mail/Preferences. Make note of all your preferences under each tab.
Quit Mac Mail.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.mail/plist to the Trash
Relaunch the Mail application.

Why do my applications hang (Mail, Disk Utility, Installer, Safari)
After the latest software update. Mail, Safari, Disk Utility, Installer, Activity monitor and some more applications do nothing more than jumping in the Dock and then hang-up with the spinning wheel always spinning... I think it was after the 2006-003 security update, or maybe the ITunes update....I'just don't know anymore...
I have tried to downgrade to the 10.3.7 combo update but the installer App behaves just the same... If it wasn't for Fire fox I wouln't be writing here.
During my search on these forums I have found a thread that stated that the latest ITunes update was responsible, I downgraded it to 6.0.1, and it worked until I restarted my mac... Then it didn't work anymore, all my Apple apps are not opening.
I really need some help with this...
The wierd thing is that all other (non-Apple) programs run just fine, like the whole Adobe CS and Macromedia Packages.
If anyone has a solution, please be so kind to let me know.
Thanks allTry this and see if it works for you.

kmosx: Apps unexpectedly quit
Posted: Dec 19, 2004 8:11 AM
Here are some possible reasons for this problem.
1. Recent Update: Download and reapply the most recent Combo Update: Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9 or Mac OS X Update 10.4.2 Combo
2. Font duplicates: Please read the articles by Kurt Lang and J.Otava here: Kurt Lang: Font Management in OS X Panther and J.Otava: Fonts & Apple Type Services
3. Corrupted preferences:
Go to Users/Your_Name/Library/Preferences and trash the files:
- com.apple.ATS.plist
- com.apple.BezelServices.plist
Restart. If this did not help, go to Users/Your_Name/Library and drag the folder Preferences to the desktop. Restart and see if this solved the problem
4. Permissions:
Symptoms:
a. Only Apple applications affected
b. Also happens when you switch to a new user.
c. First appeared after update to 10.3.4, 10.3.5 or 10.3.6
This usually happens if you do not repair permissions before you update to 10.3.4 or later. There are (unconfirmed) hints that corrupted cache files might also contribute to this problem. You can clean caches with programs like Cocktail or Panther Cache Cleaner. The only solution I am aware of is to do an Archive&Install.
You also might want to read this article: Applications don't work after reinstalling Mac OS X
Remember: Repair permissions before and after an update!
If none of the above solves the problem you might have to do an Archive&Install:
1. Insert the Install CD 1 and reboot while holding down the c-key
2. Once you are booted go to the menu and select disk utility
3. Repair the disk and Repair permissions!
4. Quit disk utility and proceed with the installation
5. Under "options" select "Archive&Install" and check the box "keep user and network data".
6. Install Panther
7. Restart
8. Go to the folder Application/Utilities and run disk utility to repair permissions again.
9. Download (or open if you downloaded before) Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9 or Mac OS X Update 10.4.2 Combo and install it.
10. Restart and repair permisssions
11. Go to the Apple menu and select "Software Update"
12. Install all missing updates and restart.
13. Repair permissions
For further information on Archive&Install read these articles:

Creating to-do item hangs Mail
Gosh, I've been fighting with this bug for a while and can't find a way around. I try to create to-do item for a message in Gmail account (manage mail via IMAP). Sending/receiving messages work perfectly but to-do creating stuff...I follow exactly with what this beautiful girl:-) from 'Apple Quick Tip of the week' tells me to do, but it's all in vain...As soon as I choose 'New To-do' at contextual menu my Mail freezes...
This issue has been addressed before. This is a bug, either in Mail or iCal. So, if you want to stop Mail from crashing or freezing, you need to do this:
1. Quit Mail if it's running.
2. Open iCal and Delete your To Do items; save and quit.
3. Open Mail and see if it crashes or hangs; if not, quit Mail, open iCal and try adding back To Do items one at a time. After you add one, save the changes, quit iCal and try opening Mail again to see if it crashes or hangs; if not, quit and go back to iCal and add another To Do and repeat this process. If Mail should crash at any point, post back with the crash report.
4. It might also help if you updated to 10.5.4.

Mailtag hangs Mail if Keyword drop down menu is not closed
If you set a keyword tag from its drop down menu *+but do not close up the drop down list+* - when you close the message window Mail hangs and has to be Force Quitted. This happens on iMac and MacBook Leopard 10.5.6 and Mailtags 2.2.3
(This is repeatable)
Anyone else seen this?http://www.dcphonecases.com/test02/wordTest.html
this is the movie. as you see the because the next part of the movie is a word input test, it becomes so inconvenient when you try to type something into the field and your mouse moves out and the window disappear. (** update: just tested, on(press) <> gotoAndStop() method would disable Input-text field as well)
that is why I wanted to make it a on(press) <> gotoAndStop() method, and when pressed, the drop-down would stay until a close button is pressed.
but then the 'choose font' onEnterFrame function destroyed if I put stop(); at the frame, I'm not sure what to do now.
Thanks for reply -
I have done my best to scour the discussions for an answer to this problem, but if I have somehow overlooked it, then I will be happy to just follow any links people have.
My problem: About 80% of the time, sending email causes Mail to hang with a permanent beachball. My solution is to force quit and relaunch Mail. At this point, it finishes sending and behaves normally. Although often, recipients will tell me they got my email twice.
Actions taken so far: I have rebuilt all potentiall affected mailoboxes. I have trashed the Outbox entirely. I have trashed my Junk mail filters. I have used utilities to scan for corrupted preferences. Probably other things that I have forgotten at this point.
It's a basic POP/SMTP setup.
Having invested about 30 hours so far in transitioning to Mail from being a long time Eudora user, this dealbreaker is really getting to me. If there is anyone here who can offer some assistance, I would be most grateful.
TIA.

that folder open, do Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C), and paste

within your account folder.

4. Open Mail and check whether it works properly now.
Thank you for your persistance.
Because I clean out my sent and drafts folders, I have essentially run this test more than once already. (Quitting Mail. Trashing some mailboxes. Restarting Mail.) Things seem ok for a time, but you have to remember that this problem is intermittant, albeit frequent. -
Google verification box hanging Mail
Opened up Mail this morning to find a Google verification window (in the Mailbox window, not in a message) that won’t go away. There's a Done button that never activates. Can't do a thing in the application (including Quit). Anyone seen this, or have an idea what to do about it? I assume it was prompted by app sign-in attempts that the e-mail below mentions.
Thanks.Well, a force-quit and restart seems to have obviated it for the moment. We'll see if it comes back, I suppose…

Software: Yosemite 10.10.2 (14C1514), Mail 8.2 (2070.6)
Problem: Certain incoming Mail messages cause peculiar behavior of the Mail application, as follows:
Message is opened. If scrolling down is attempted, or sometimes if just left open for a few seconds, the message content disappears, followed by the spinning rainbow. Computer fans begin to speed up. If the computer is restarted and Mail is reopened, the problem is 100% repeatable.
The above applies only to certain messages, and others can be read with no problem. I have narrowed the sources of this problem to two or three of my correspondents and have sent them notice. Could they have viruses on their computers that are causing this?
Thanks for reading!
---- BillThanks, Old Toad. Downloaded and ran Etrecheck. Here are the results:
Problem description:
Yosemite 10.10.2 and Mail 8.2
Odd behavior in Mail app when some messages are received (but not most).
Opening certain messages causes them to disappear after a short time, and a spinning rainbow appears. If computer is re-started and the same message is re-opened, the same thing happens again.

Solution to hanging mail when responding to certain emails
I've had this annoying problem for a couple of months where I would get the spinning wheel of death when I would try and respond to certain emails. I've read multiple posts and suggestions and tried almost all of them to no avail. I finally read a tech note describing problems that some programs may have when a particular font is corrupted. So, this is what I did and it solved the problem:
1. I opened the font book application (in your applications folder) and examined each and every font for signs of corruption. They all looked perfect. But I did notice that some font styles (bold, italics, etc...) were duplicated. The ones that have duplications appear with a small dot next to them.
2. I opened each font with a dot next to it (click on the little arrow on the left of the font) and disabled one of each duplicated font style (typically the one that did not have a dot next to it).
3. restarted mail (after having to force quit it) and I was able to reply to the problem emails.
Hope this is useful to some other's out there who've been experiencing the same problem.
Cheers y'all,
ramoCltrl/Alt/Delete for Task Manager, look under processes tab for firefox.exe, highlight and hit delete key. Then search for other instances of firefox.exe and delete them too. Close Task Manager and click on your Firefox icon and it should come up. This happens to my wife when she is frustrated and just closes Firefox outright and then immediately tries to reopen it. The Task Manager has not had time to close out firefox.exe

This started out of the blue this morning. If I save a draft email when I go to open the letter later for editing, Mail beachballs for 2-3 minutes before opening the email. If I have the draft open when Iaunch Mail, it beachballs for 2-3 minutes before opening. This happens on two different IMAP accounts. It happens if I have the pref set to save drafts on server or not. These accounts havebeen in use for months. I've deleted the mail.plist and recreated accounts. If I use a webmail client and create the mesage in webmail and save it to Drafts, then access the email in Mail, it is fine. Ony if Mail saves or edits the draft is there an isssue.
I've also tried deleting the Drafts folders in Mail and letting Mail recreate them.Since this appears to be a system-wide issue, you may also want to try reinstalling the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for PPC
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for Intel
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
Troubleshooting installation and software updates
Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed. -
Mail "To Do" hangs / crashes Mail since 10.5.2 update
Since I updated to 10.5.2, I'm having some Mail issues, primarily with the "To Do" function. If I so much as click on a To Do, I get the spinning beach ball and ultimately have to force quit Mail.
I have an Exchange Email account and .Mac account. Under "To Dos", there are two categories showing "On My Mac" and "Mac". The Exchange account does not show up under To Dos.
Doing anything with any To Dos in either On My Mac or Mac, hangs mail and I have to force quit.
I use the To Dos a lot for work, primarily to track phone calls. I'm open to anything to fix this. I would even delete all the To Dos, reset it and start from scratch, but can't figure out how to do so, given that any interaction with any To Dos, simply crashes Mail.
Help??Yea the same thing happens to me. Anything to do with "To-Do" results it in the beach ball of doom...
I don't know if its just me but there's no way to contact Apple about this or any problem via email... I've looked all over the support page and there's no support email about OSX just .Mac and iTunes..
Anyways this problem *****... -
Whenever I open Mail, it simply hangs. The window opens the beach ball gets going and I am unable to do anything and have to force quit.
This is very sudden and seemingly for no reason. I have the latest version of mail (released on the 22nd) and have already rebooted and repaired permissions.
Any suggestions?Has anyone tried resetting the SMC (System management controller)? In addition to the hanging Mail issue, I was also getting random shutdowns of the entire system (Mail wasn't running- I'd switched readers out of frustration). In researching that issue, I came across the SMC reset. Not only did that apparently fix the shut-down problem, I've gone back to Mail, and had no problems yet, whereas I had been getting the beachball right after starting it.
In a possibly related note, the Finder was taking forever to display icons in column view, but that problem has cleared up now, too.
To reset the SMC, shut down the computer. Unplug ALL cables, including power. Wait at least 15 seconds, plug the power back in and boot up. Once it's finished booting, plug everything else in. Cross your fingers and hold your mouth just right, and maybe thing's will be fixed.

Mail created with "Send to Mail Recipient" disappear and are not sent
I have a small setup with a SBS 2011 server (Exchange 2010) 10 users with Windows 8.1 and Outlook 2013.
One user is trying to send mails with attachments to his college´s
but they are never send, are not shown in sent items and can not be found on the server.
The user right click on a PDF file and press "Send to Mail Recipient" Outlook opens his mail is entered into the receiver (internal receiver) and press send. The mail do not show up and as mentioned even in sent items.
I then try to do the same but send through the address book in Outlook / Exchange and these messages appears as they should.
One week later, the disappeared mails suddenly appears in the college’s mailboxes and it turns out there are some mails to external addresses as well, which were not sent until a week. All messages are now in sent mail but they have not
appeared anywhere else before.
I did some tests with the "send to" function which also had the mails disappearing - those mails has not turned up until now. (a week ago)
Now the user (AND all colleagues) are very nervous that something is wrong with their system and the mail does not arrive.
It is only 1 user this has affected but he is responsible for the majority of sales in this company and they are very afraid that they are not responding correctly to large customers.
Is there anyone who can help with debugging in such a case?
I have tried repairing Outlook, started in safe mode, checked the mail server for hanging mails but nothing shows any errors.
Thanks in advance.

Michael GronHi,
Have the user logon OWA and send the attachment, will this issue persist?
Please also confirm if the issue exists when inserting an attachment when composing a new email isntead of using the "Send to Mail Recipient" function.
Since only one user has been affected, use MFCMAPI to find if the message is stuck in the user's mailbox:

Problem with mail .mp3 attachments
I can't figure out how to fix a lock up with mail when I try to attach an .mp3 file in mail 7.1 on Mavericks 10.9.1. Whenever I try to attach an .mp3 by dragging or using the "paperclip" I get a green + "copy" sign and then the beach ball, which never goes away. It is only a problem on my macbook pro. My iMac has the same versions and is just fine. I only have noticed problems with .mp3 files. I have no issues with anything else I've tried to attach.
Since it works perfectly on your iMac, but not on your Macbook Pro, it may be some settings in your Mail app on your MBP are not set the same as on your iMac.
And it almost sounds like your hanging Mail app is expecting to do something else with the MP3 file, or translate it into some other format. Have you demonstrated through other means that your MBP's MP3 files are not damaged or corrupted, or aliases rather than the actual files? -
Safari Hanging with OS X upgrade.
I have a imac mid 2007 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB of Ram. I recently upgraded this to OS X Lion and have been experiencing Hangs with my Safari that require a hard boot restart. This seems to happen after the machine has been running for a period of time and I find that Safari wont respond and I get the beach ball as i try to access. I perform a force quit and try to restart but this doesn't occur. It also wont allow the system to shutdown without a hard restart. I have also noticed mail stops working too.
Here is the most recent log of one of the hangs..
Any thoughts or suggestions on what to look for to help correct?

Prior to this I would have Safari hang, Mail hang and other apps. This would require me to force quit the apps and then trying to reboot resulted in me having to power down (hard stop) the machine to reboot. Since making this change I have not seen any addtional hangs. Hoping this is something that wiil get corrected in a future update.
