    hi,
is there a way to find missing glyphs / characters (that are not contained in a font and thus displayed as pinkish rectangles) in a text?
I thought there might be a metacharacter or a variable of the Text object, but I couldn't find anything.

I want to use basetext font, but some of the glyphs are missing in it, and are highlighted with pink boxes. common font [stix, etc.] have much more glyphs than basetext font. • Some graphics are missing on all websites, Google menu text only

First Google Chrome works perfectly. The issue is with IE and Firefox. The homepage Google.com has an extra menu at the top and it is totally text, but more importantly, on most websites, only some of the graphics show. (ie Flash). It's worst in Gmail where everything is text-only. And NO, I did not enable on of those visually-impaired settings. I have reset settings in both bad browsers and even downloaded a new copy of Firefox. Same thing happens in IE and Firefox, while Chrome is normal. I did fix it last week, but can't remember what I did. But, after my weekly re-boot, it's baaack. Very frustrating. Been trying lots of suggestions for 2 hours now. Same....help my browsing is crippled.

Hi Waka_Flocka_Flame. No, that did not change anything. Still has the problem in Safe Mode. But thanks!

  • Question about "missing glyph" error in CS4/CS5 live preflight

    Hi all
Basically I'm wondering what the "missing glyph" error refers to specifically and what are the implications of such an error. The help file doesn't mention it, as far as I can see.
I have some PDFs (from WordPerfect) which are causing this error when imported into Indesign. I think the pages which cause this error have been corrected with a PDF editor (Iceni Infix) but Acrobat reports all the fonts are embedded and subsetted. A third-party preflight programs reports everything is okay too.
Am I safe to ignore these errors?
    thanks,
    Iain

I'm not sure "Missing Glyph" picks up missing glyphs in PDFs. What does ID point to when you click the page number hyperlink in the Preflight panel?
If you have missing glyphs in your document text, they will look something like this:
-- then again, perhaps you cannot see the pink highlight because of background (an image) or foreground (another character 'on top of it', or perhaps even a graphic over the text).
How serious this is? It's ... critical! As you can see in my image, the only thing InDesign can do is notify you with the pink highlight and temporarily insert the font's own "missing" image (which may be a rectangle, a question mark, or even just a space).
Fortunately, if you do need the character, all you have to do is change the font (for those characters only) to one that does contain the missing ones. You'll have to try all your system fonts before you find one that does and matches the rest of your text as well :-)
There are a few special cases where InDesign gets it wrong, though. The Symbol font, for example, might not get imported correctly from Word, and in that case you have to manually change the character -- i.e., find the correct one in the Glyphs panel and insert it from there. There is also the Strange Case of the Invisible Marker: InDesign thinks there is something but if you check against the original Word file, there is nothing. This will usually insert a character code U+FFFD; you can safely delete them.

  • Keynote - The font Calibri is missing. Your text might look different.

Since updating Keynote app, I keep getting the following message every time I open my presentation...even when I have made other changes:
Some changes were made to your presentation.  The font Calibri is missing. Your text might look different.
With over 100 slides, how can I find the font?  Keynote used to make the change for you and you would never see this message again.  Its so annoying. Also, why have you taken away so many of the easy functions like replacing images.  Now it takes additional steps..sure hurts productivity.

The fonts on iOS are a limited set of fonts system wide.
Only really few app allow to install custom fonts. I assume that apple trys to prevent compatibility problems with the system.
May i guess is that you have reused a PowerPoint-Template? The message is clear for Calibri is one of the standard fonts of MS-Office and not on the Mac or iOS by default. I get this message regularly whe opening Office-docs.
When you are using styles the soultion should be easy: change the styles to a font that is on the iPad too - as  Times. The changed styles should affect the whole document.
And don´t forget the master slices for they got font formats too.

  • Windows 7 fills in missing glyphs - suggestions?

    Hi all,
I wasn't sure how to title the thread in a way that caught what I was trying to get at, so please bear with me.  And I do realise that what I'm asking about is a Windows issue rather than an Adobe one, but I thought people here might have an insight into the problem, given that it affects those who focus on and use fonts specifically.  I haven't been able to find help or much engagement on any Windows forums, where the discussion is more about operating system capabilities and the issues of fonts are somewhat arcane to most posters.
So please indulge me for a moment, and if you can help me, then thanks!
I'm new to Windows 7.  What I've discovered is that Windows 7 has substantially changed the way it handles and displays fonts.  (Vista may have as well, but I never stepped into that pond.)  In both the Font Viewer and in any Font Manager that I've tried, Windows 7 fills in any missing glyphs in a font within the basic ASCII character set with an auto-generated generic set of glyphs, often making it very hard - or at least time- and effort-intensive - to determine which glyphs are from the font and which glyphs are auto-filled.  It was meant to be helpful, I imagine, but it's really not.
In fact, I find it really, *really* frustrating, because it makes it so hard to glance at the display of the font and see quickly whether it's got the glyphs I'm looking for or not.  (Some fonts are incomplete, for various reasons.  Sometimes they use the basic 1252 encoding but not the standard glyphs, and they too get any missing glyphs autogenerated.)
Am I the only one this bothers?
More to the point:  Has anyone found a way to turn this "feature" off?  Or can anyone give me an insight on the issue that I may not have thought about, especially ways to use it productively?  I find it really counter-intuitive and enormously unhelpful and distracting.
But enough whingeing.  Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Miguel.
    Thanks for the information.
Why was this done, do you know?  I can't think of a circumstance where this would actually be helpful, especially since, as you say, there is apparently no mechanism for the user to have control over the face that's used to fill empty glyphs.  For anyone purposely using fonts, it would seem to be more of an intrusion than assistance.  Nobody using fonts as part of purposeful design will want glyphs from a different face inserted out of their control;  you either use the font as is, or do something about the incomplete character set (if you have that capability), or you choose a different font.
But maybe I'm missing something?  What am I not understanding?
And why does it not happen with every font, just the overwhelming majority?  I haven't been able to spot a pattern to those where this "fallback" doesn't kick in, but in some instances it doesn't.  The Font Viewer fills any missing glyphs with the .notdef character;  in others, it inserts its own characters, and ignores the .notef character.  I can't figure out why.
By the way, John, as I said every font manager I've tried just shows what Font Viewer does, which is why I was sure it was an OS issue.  And Dov, yes I realise the problem itself has to go back to Microsoft, as I tried to make clear, but already I've got more information on the issue from posting here than the questions I've asked in Microsoft and Windows forums, where most people know nothing about fonts or their use.

  • How to Install 64-bit "Generic / Text Only" print driver on a 32-bit Windows 2003 Server?

    Hi All,
In a nutshell, I need to Install the 64-bit Generic / Text Only print driver on a 32-bit Windows 2003 Server’s “Generic / Text Only 32-bit print queue.
The problem is that there is no Driver-Disk to get the drivers. I’ve been able to isolate 14 files related to the 64 bit drivers from a Windows 7 x64 computer and copy them to a temp folder on the Windows 2003 x32 server. When I try to add the 64 bit driver
to the Windows 2003 x32 server,  it wants a *.inf file, which I don’t have and can’t find.
Because Microsoft will no longer support Windows XP, my client is replacing all of their Point-of-Sale Windows XP x32 systems with Windows 7 x64. They use Terminal Services (Remote Desktop) to connect to a Windows 2003 x32 server to use the POS system. The
POS software redirects LPT1 back to the local Generic / Text Only printer. This works great for XP x32.
When we use the Terminal Services POS software on the new Windows 7 x64 system, none of the labels print out because it’s redirected in 32-bit back to the local Windows 7 x64 Generic / Text Only 64-bit printer.
This will be a huge issue for me if I can’t get this to work.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions and help! -Rob

  • How to find out who's texting you from an iCloud email address?

how to find out who's texting you from an icloud email address?

OK after a bit of research I found a way to achieve this.
I simply looked up the email address in ADUC, then did a search in SP with the display name. I could locate the list and manually confirm it was configured with the incoming email address I was looking for.
I also found the below script on Stackoverflow, but got "The 'using' keyword is not supported in this version of the language." when I tried to run it. Any idea how to fix that? I'd like to have a script to link a library to an email address istead of the
    manual approach described above.

  • X86 Generic/Text Only Printer Driver

Ive got a HP Thin Client that I need to setup a Epson TM88 Receipt printer on.
The issue is the software will only recognise this printer if its setup with the Generic/Text Only Windows Printer Driver which HP decided not to include in the standard image for the device.
Its running Windows 7 Embedded 32Bit.
Now ive looked online and seen heaps of people saying just install on a 32bit pc and then share it to get the driver.  trouble is every other pc and server is 64bit and I cant do that.
even my home pc's are 64 bit so no option there.
Does anyone know if there is a download available anywhere online for the .inf file to make this work?
Alternatively can anyone specify the location and file name for the driver file so I can at least know where to look if I can find someone who has Win7 x86 installed?

    In Internet Explorer go to
http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx  The Update Catalog will not work in any other browser.
Type Generic/Text Only in the Search box in the upper right and click on Search.
    Results should be:
    http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=Generic%2FText%20Only
The second listing with only Windows 8,Windows 8.1 Drivers is the x86 driver.  Although it states Windows 8 the version is 6.1.7600.16385 and dated  6/21/2006.

  • Adobe Acrobat 9/Win7 - Inserting Word documents into PDF file intermittently leads to missing or garbled text?

    Heya.
I have a user who is creating a PDF essentially compiled from inserting word documents into the position she wants inside of the PDF.
The problem is that sometimes this leads to missing or garbled text. For example, 6-8.1 is displayed as 6- .1. Which is just plain weird.
Other times, the text looks garbled or uneven. She turned off her PC but I took screenshots of both of these scenarios. I fear that I am not going to be able to retroactively fix the corruption in this document for her.
She says she's using very standard fonts. Like Arial. I asked if she could locate the original Word document that produced the garbled text, just for a sanity check. The problem is that her co-worker may have been the only one with that particular word document (there are probably hundreds which compile this PDF...) and IF she has it, she might not be able to locate it on her PC TO check what the original text is. Yikes.
Google-fu turns up very little. I tried the guidance in this document - https://answers.acrobatusers.com/We-combine-PDF-document-ends-corrupt-What-problem-q197619 .aspx[2] and a Save-As but no avail.
This also turns up but is not applicable to Acrobat 9 I believe:  http://blogs.adobe.com/acrobatineducation/2010/02/get_rid_of_that_bloat_in_your.html[3]
She states that she can manually fix the document but after a while it gets corrupted again? But I haven't observed that and she might have just fed me that to amplify the problem.
I will be able to post screenshots when she turns on her computer tomorrow.

Here are the two instances of corruption we have come across.
    http://imgur.com/nPztMYm
    http://imgur.com/wHM12e2
Edit:  A LITTLE MORE INFO.  I am able to select the corrupted text, paste it into Notepad with all the characters intact.  So the characters are THERE.  they are just not being displayed correctly.
Edit:  They also do not print correctly.  The page prints with characters missing, and she wants to print this document, so that is going to be an issue.

  • Use smart mailbox to find email with specific text in attached pdf

Does anyone known if a smart mailbox can be created to find emails with specific text within a pdf attached document. I know that spotlight can do this and it works fine but it would suite me better to be able to do this in mail.

After some digging, I found that Spotlight returns the pdf attachment (found within the library/mail/download folder), but not the actual email. The only time it returns the email is if the search text or numerics are coincidentally within the written contents or subject line.
Yes, i have tried setting up smart mailbox search criteria using the entire message contents but this does not find emails where the text exist within the pdf.
I've checked spotlight pref.'s and all categories are checked off.
Essentally, i need the smartbox search criteria to return results where the search text is found within the pdf attachment if possible. If this is not possible, i'll continue using spotlight searches outside of mail.
I appreciate any help you can offer.

Have you tried a search of this forum… Im sure I posted a work around to this… The simple answer is NO not in the Illustrator DOM you can however read the file as text and the stuff you want is in the Illustrator file comments…

  • Finding missing photos when drive letter has changed

I have over 30,000 missing photos because LR only recognizes drive letters not names.  All my drives have a master "Image" directory with folders and subfolders.  Going to the LR online directory with name change and right clicking images and finding folder location does not work.  LR does not recognize folders or subfolders in the drive with a name change.  Usually none of the folder names are high lighted. By going to the "Missing Photographs" in the catalog menu and searching by file name I can find individual files but with over 30k missing files, this approach is not practical. I have an HP computer with Windows 7 and LR 5.7.  How do I find the photos?

I think the most straightforward way to sort this out is:
    1. Plug in all of your external drives.  From the screen shots, it looks like you have at most 5 external drives of interest, 2 that are currently online and 3 that are disconnected.  (I'm not counting the one external drive letter that has just one photo on it.)  How many external drives do you actually have?
    2. If you don't have enough USB ports, order a $12 USB hub from Amazon.
    3. Make sure the entire folder hierarchy for each drive is showing in the Folders pane as described here. When you're done, each drive in the Folders pane should have a top-level folder labeled with a drive letter (as with your F: drive in the screenshot above).
    4. Expand the entire folder hierarchy on each drive in the Folders pane by clicking the arrows to the left of the folder.
    5. For each drive, find one or more folders in its hierarchy that are closest to the top that have a "?" on them.  It may be the root folder labeled with the drive letter (e.g. "F:"), or it may be folders below the root folder.   For each such folder with a "?", right-click it and select Find Missing Folder.  That folder should be somewhere on one of the drives.  Use Windows File Explorer to help find where it is.
    6. When you're done with step 5, you should have located all missing folders and told LR where they are currently located.  But you may have missed some.   Do Library > Find All Missing Photos.
    7. Pick a photo from step 6.  Right-click it and do Go To Folder In Library.  If the folder in the Folder pane is marked with a "?", right-click it and do Find Missing Folder.   Otherwise, click the "!" on the photo and then click Locate.  Use Windows File Explorer to help find the missing photo by filename, if necessary.  Repeat until there are no more missing photos.
    8. Going forward, try to keep all your external drives connected.  To minimize drive-letter confusion in the future, rename the drive letters of the existing external drives to start from the end of the alphabet, changing each drive letter as described here.   When you change a drive letter, you'll need to re-locate its root folder as described in steps 3-5.   (Windows tends to use drive letters from C onward.)

  • Font Embedding missing glyphs

    Hi all
I want to to create a SWC with a font resource using the IDE.
    So I
create in the library a font called Presenter_font I use
    Arial ( it has
    all the glyphs I need)
I create a textfield and assign it Presenter_font* I embed
    the font ,
I want to include some Greek symbols so I include the greek
    in the
    embedding options.
I test the movie and all works fine "IFNβ" appears
    as it should
Now the last part of the puzzle is to export for Actionscript
    so it
becomes a class I can use elsewhere I do that using the
    linkage option
and now when I test it I get "IFN" why has the beta glyph
    gone?
I feel I am missing something ( as usual).

Is there a way for InDesign to do such substitution automatically? I.e., apply a default font, which can be specified by user, for all the missing glyphs.
No. Alas, I might add. There is some sort of auto-catch, specific for Symbol symbols, but no-one knows how it works and you cannot manipulate it yourself.
If not, how to search/find those missing glyphs with GREP or script?
Not specifically, i.e., you cannot search for "any missing glyph". Add a GREP style which changes just the font (make sure it doesn't set the font style as well, or else your Bolds or Italics might disappear). Create a new Preflight profile that checks just for missing glyphs, so you won't miss any.
None of this can be automated though.
.. it seems easily (not to identify the unicode ranges which seems not very easy) to find them using GREP, but I failed to find it.
InDesign's GREP flavor doesn't allow named Unicode blocks (http://www.regular-expressions.info/unicode.html), but I have successfully used character ranges to automatically set the font for Chinese, for example.
