  • Can I format my Mac with Lion From App Store?

I lost my instalation diks and I need to now if the Lion software download or the USB with Lion will be the same as insterting the OS X disk and formatting the computer... PLEASE HELP! Thanks in advance...

Do you have Snow Leopard installed on your computer? If so then you can purchase and download the Lion installer from the App Store. You can also make your own bootable USB flash drive. Or, you can go to an Apple store and purchase the Apple USB Lion Installer flash drive.
The latter will cost $69.00. The former will cost $30.00 plus the cost of an 8 GB USB flash drive.

  • MacPro1.1 with 3 internal hard drives, 2 with snow leopard OS & 1 with Lion OS, I have some software that will only run on OS 10.4.11, and I would like to add a 4th drive and format it to 10.4.11, can this be done aon this platform?

    Hello,
I would like to load the 4th bay in my mac with a 2TB HDD and format it with the old system 4.11 will I have any problems?

Since it's a MacPro1,1, it originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.4.7 and will run Mac OS X 10.4.11 when installed from its original disks(or the Mac OS X Server 10.4 Universal Binary) and updated.

  • I want to install hybrid drive in Macbook pro. I bought my Mac book with lion and am now running mountain lion. I was told I needed install disk to set up new drive before restoring from my time capsule. Is this correct and if so how do I get disk osx10?

I purchased a Mac book Pro in Aug 2012 with lion and have upgraded to mountain lion. I currently am looking to install the segate 750 gig hybrid drive. I watching video I shows me needing a OSX 10 disk to boot off of when the new disk is in and the use time capsule to restore system from back up drive to new hybrid. Hope I got this correct so far. that being said my Mac Book did not come with a disk therefore is one available, when I get to point of restoring from back up with it be the same mountain lion system I had. Sorr if this sounds redudant.. Thank you in advance

Connect the new hybrid drive to your MBP.  Start up your MBP holding the OPTION key, the two HDD icons will appear.  Select the 'restore' icon on the right.  When you get to the menu where you have 4 options, select Disk Utility.  Format the drive and then you can use the option of restoring it from Time Machine.
    Ciao.

  • I just purchased an IMac with lion and I tryed to install an old math program that is for winmac running systems. When I try to boot the cd it comes up with a notepad window with a bunch of weird symbols and codes but the program will not start up.

I just purchase my first IMac with lion and I was trying to install a math program I bought 6 years ago. When I went to boot it off the disk while following the program instructions a window popped up with a note pad format with symbols and codes but the program would not download or open. How do I get this program to work? It is a mac compatible program by the way.

Your Mac probably does not know with which application to open the file and is opening a file with a text editor that really needs to be opened by the application itself.  Try starting the application first, then use the File > open command to open the file.
As varjak paw comments, there isn't a "winmac" so that's not telling us anything.
Note that it is possible that software purchased 6 years ago may no longer run on your computer.  Once we know what it is we can help more.

  • My Quicken no longer works with Lion.  Any suggestions?

My Qucken no longer works now that I have installed Lion.  Any suggestions?

Visit Intuit for their solutions or find another application that works with Lion of which there are many. Quicken is supposed to be upgraded this year for Lion, but that's only the rumor.
You can also downgrade back to Snow Leopard or partition the drive and install Snow Leopard on a different partition provided you can install Snow Leopard on your Mac model
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • How do I make a bootable clone (with Lion already installed on my Mac)?

Hi all, I'm hoping someone can help clarify with a step-by-step on this.  Here's the deal: I have a 2008 MacBook Pro, which I updated from Snow Leopard to Lion via the App Store.  I have decided to upgrade my internal hard drive (which I've done before) from a 500GB to 750GB, but after doing a couple hours of research, the whole Lion element is making me nervous.
I've been reading about the whole Lion Recovery partition, which won't be brought over with a simple cloning process (via SuperDuper! or the like) and I'm now thoroughly confused with how to do this the proper way.  I don't know if I need to use the Recovery Disk Assistant app on the new 750GB hard drive, or on a separate (third) drive, or to make a bootable Lion install disk on either, or even if I do do these things, how this meshes on the new drive, and do I need to format the new drive with two partitions for the Recovery partition to be a part of it?... Oy.
I'd really be appreciative if someone with the know-how of this process could help with the steps.  It doesn't need to be crazy thorough--as I said, I've at least replaced my drive before--but I'm not an expert by any stretch (as a point of reference: bring up Terminal and my eyes will roll back in my head).  I just need to know what to do in what order, with at least a little detail.  And if it means anything to you, I'm the type of guy who likes to know WHY I'm doing something, if possible...  Thanks in advance for your time and help.
(I've already got the new 750GB drive in hand, an external enclosure and a separate 8GB+ drive, too.)

You can use 3rd party software such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to create a bootable clone on an external drive.
I use SuperDuper to create a clone. Yes, it's true the Recovery HD will need to be recreated after restoring a clone because neither of these softwares nor Time Machine backup that partition. It's really no big deal. You just reinstall Lion on top of itself after the restore and reapply any Software Updates including the 10.7.1 update. I've done this a few times with no issues.
The Lion Recovery Assistant app creates an external Recovery HD on like a USB thumb drive, but it creates this using the Recovery HD from your Lion install. If the Recovery HD is missing, the app will not create one for you.
    EDITED:
Create your bootable clone on an external drive.
Create an external USB thumb drive with the Recovery HD using the Lion Recovery Assistant.
    Swap out hard drives.
Boot from the USB Recovery HD thumb drive.
Use Disk Utilities to create a new partition (Macintosh HD), format it with the GUID partition table and Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
While in Disk Utilities, click your hard drive (not the new partition); then click the Restore button.
The Source of your restore is the external clone you created. The Destination is the newly created Macintosh HD partition.
Click the Restore button. The restore will take awhile depending on the size of the clone.
After the restore, boot your system and it should boot into Lion.
Reinstall Lion on top of itself to recreate the Recovery HD at the end of your Lion partition.
Reapply Software Updates including the 10.7.1 update (if you want it).
    Hope this helps!

  • Does anybody know how to install Snow Leopard on an external HD with Lion?

My MacBook Pro came from apple with Lion OS X 10.7.1 installed and it doesn't operate with Pro Tools LE 8.0.5 (or any other version for that matter and PT 9.0.5 is only in beta) So, I'm looking to partition Snow Leopard OS X 10.6 to my external HD so I can bypass the issue without compromising and downgrading my MacBook Pro (which I've been told is not possible anyway but I'm sure there is a way) and having to A) Pay out more money to avid and get PT 9 ( BETA) or B) Run a different DAW (Also costing more $$$) Any help would be MUCH appreciated!!!

Yes it's possible, you need another Firewire capable Mac#2 that can hold c boot off the 10.6.3 Snow Leopard Retail Disks and a Firewire cable and if necessary a FW 800 to 400 adapter.
First you boot into Lion on Mac#1 and use Disk Utility to Erase Free Space, this will take a few hours.
Then backup your data off the Mac#1 Lion partition to a external drive and disconnect. (for safety sake)
Then you create a second partition on the drive in Disk Utility, formatted OS X Extended (Journaled) under the Partition Tab.
While that is all going on, on the other Mac#2 that can boot off 10.6.3 disks, you do the same thing,
First you boot into Snow or Lion on Mac#2 and use Disk Utility to Erase Free Space, this will take a few hours.
Then backup the data off the Mac#2 main boot partition to a external drive and disconnect. (for safety sake)
Then you create a second partition on the drive in Disk Utility, formatted OS X Extended (Journaled) under the Partition Tab.
Hold c and boot Mac#2 off the 10.6.3 Retail Snow Leopard Disk (won't work with grey disks unless it matches the target machine model) and install onto the new partition on Mac#2, reboot holding option key and select the 10.6.3 partition, once in, use the Combo Update to get to 10.6.8. (must do)
Reboot holding T this Lion Mac#1 so it's in Target Disk Mode, connect the Firewire cable to the other Mac#2, then hold option key and reboot into the second partition on Mac#2. Download and use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the new partition of Mac#2 to new partition of Mac#1
Reboot Mac#1 holding option key  to boot into Snow partition on the factory Lion Mac#1.
If that doesn't work, you need to combine the 10.6.3 and the 10.6.8 Combo Update together in this process at the link below, and apply the 10.6.3 + 10.6.8 combined image in the same Target Disk mode fashion
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3264421?start=0&tstart=0
Another method is if you can convince Apple to send you the 10.6.6 install disks for your machine, then use the Target Disk Mode approach to circumvent the firmware which is preventing you from booting off install disks from any previous version of OS X.
For example, my new 2011 MBP came with 10.6.6 grey install disks, but can't boot off the 10.6.3 Snow Leopard Retail Disks.
Another method would be to find another same exact machine as yours, came with 10.6.6 from the factory (even if upgraded to Lion it should still boot 10.6.6), thus will boot off the 10.6.6 install disks and install it onto your parttion.
Needless to say, after going through all this, you really need to make a clone of the partition once it's successfully installed.
Set the startup disk in system preferences to Snow.

  • Mac with Lion OX, in print preview with PDF, only page 1 comes correctly, the rest misses some portion rest not

I have iMac desktop with Lion OS. I am using Firefox 6 web browser. Previously with Snowleopard OS I did not have any problems with printing, With Lion OS print commands have changed and when I click preview in PDF format for printing a web page, only page 1 of the document shows correctly. In second page, the text does not show all of the document and few lines at the boundary is missing and the font is different from page 1. I tried using Google Chrome browser and this does not have this problem. If I do not find a solution I may be forced to move to Google Chrome. I will really appreciate a response. Thanks.

Why not reconstruct the pages in InDesign they way you want the double pages to appear. There may even be an imposition script available that will do the trick. You could then output to pdf all the pages you want the full spread on. Leave the original to create the pages you wanted left as is.
You can ask in the ID forum about an imposition script. I know there was one with CS4, there may have been one with CS3.

  • Finder freezes with Lion 10.7.4

I've had my macbook pro with Lion 10.7.4 for only about 4 or 5 months now and since I installed a 2 TB Seagate external HD Finder has been crashing periodically. I've been keeping an eye on the Activity Monitor when this happens and it doesn't look like there are any processes that are taking a lot of %CPU. I've already run a disk repair from the Lion recovery partition which seemed to solve the problem temporarily, but now its back. It only seems to happen when I have the external HD plugged in and Time Machine starts to run a backup.
I've been reading a lot of forum postings regarding this issue and I haven't had any luck solving it so I thought I would repost a new discussion in case someone was able to come up with a solution to this problem. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thank you

Well, if you are running too many concurrent applications and, if you don't have sufficient free space on your hard drive, then this will be a regular occurrence.
Try booting into Safe Mode then restarting normally.
I would also use a utility such as Mountain Lion Cache Cleaner 7.0 to clear all user, system, and font caches to be sure there isn't a problem with a corrupted cache.
If you still cannot resolve the problem, then I suggest erasing the drive and reinstalling OS X:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Does Drobo work with Lion?

I use the Drobo Unit to backup my Mac Pro. I've heard it's software doesn't work with Lion? Can someone verify this?

For DROBO Gen 1 (no FW)
Does my Gen 1 Drobo work on Mac OS X Lion?
If you are not sure if your Drobo is a Gen 1 or a Gen 2, look at the back of the unit for a FireWire connection, which indicates that you have a Gen 2 Drobo.
If your unit does not have a FireWire connection, then you have a Drobo Gen 1. While Drobo Gen 1 is no longer supported, we will continue to release updates for critical issues like support for Lion. In the meantime, if you want to upgrade to Lion, follow the steps below:
Safely shut down your Drobo prior to upgrading the OS.
Upgrade to Mac OS X Lion.
Important! Do NOT perform any volume management changes (like creating new volumes or formatting from Drobo Dashboard or from Disk Utility) until you receive the new firmware update that will make your Drobo 4-bay Gen 1 compatible with Lion. To be notified of the latest software updates from Drobo, subscribe to this article: I would like to recieve email notifications when new software is released for my Drobo
For more information on Drobo Gen 1 and DroboShare support please read KB 594, KB 598 and KB 65.

For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Office Mac Compatibility With Lion

I'm trying to decide iWork vs Office for school and I have decided I need Office so the file will look the same for someone else. I was wondering if Office supported autosave and other lion features.
Also I was wondering if anyone thinks iWork will work for me.

Office for Mac does not yet support Autosaave & Versions,
iWork will work but get used to saving then exporting the document to a format compatible with MS Office.
Open Office will also open and save MS Office documents and is free.

  • Will "Word"  2008 work with LION?

"Open XML for Word" shows up as PPC,what does that mean for my version of Word, Version 12.3.0????   Thanks, Bill

Word 2008 is a universal application, meaning it will run on both PowerPC and Intel systems. OpenXML for Word is intended for Office 2004, Word 2008 being able to natively open the newer Word document format, so OpenXML being PowerPC-only will not be a factor.
How compatible Word 2008 will be with Lion, though, is unknown at this time. We'll have to wait for either official details from Microsoft or for Lion to be released so that people can test and report on compatibility.
    Regards.
