To go from ilife 05 to ilife 08 on Tiger 10.4.11

Anyone done this? Any "beware" tips. a DVD (from WeLoveMacs will be the installation disc.

Depending on the computer's configuration, you may find a newer iLife to not
be fully compatible. If you have a computer with graphic specifications less
than ideal for a newer version of iLife, or if the computer is older and maybe
should have the early version (iLife '06 or '05) that does not require much
fancy modern hardware to use its features, that may be the better choice.
(Note, the files created or edited in earlier versions of iLife may act different
or may be converted when opened by the later version; so they are not to
be expected to be backward compatible to the older iLife (iPhoto, etc) later.)
But, since you have no specifications, model or version of hardware listed,
having any idea beyond full-on speculation is all that can be offered. Some
G4 computers with slower processors, small graphic processors & VRAM,
limited optical drive without the ability to use DVD-R type media, and other
known factors, may not do so well with iLife '08.
I have iLife 08 but did not install it into my older Macs running Tiger 10.4.11;
seemed easier to just use the retail iLife '06 which I was given instead; since
more could work adequately without question. And with an older iMac G4 w/
800MHz processor, 1024MB RAM, 17" LCD, Superdrive, and USB; that Mac
did not seem likely to support iLife '08; I included iLife 06 with that one when
I gave the computer away to a friend in near perfect condition with accessories.
Since I also have Leopard 10.5.x retail installer, I'd thought to maybe use iLife 08
with that - in one of my older computers here at some point. No rush, Tiger is fine.
When I finally upgraded the one iMac from Panther to Tiger about two years ago,
I had left the older included iLife suite in the newer system; later on, I decided to
replace the old iLife that was new in 2004 or so that was in the system packet, with
iLife 06 when I did a complete hard drive erase, overwrite with zeros and reformat.
And put Tiger in there from scratch instead of the patchwork upgrade it had inside.
So, anyway, you should read what versions of iLife are best supported in the
hardware you have; there should be some information on the software limits
with the software documentation and also online in Apple Support's database.
Good luck & happy computing!

    Hi ~
_Purchased & installed upgrade from iLife 2 to iLife 08, but I have questions..._
First I made sure I backed up my 5,500 photos in iPhoto to an external hard drive. (The only downfall to this backing-up process is that I haven't found an easy way to back-up the comments attached to each photo. Any advice on this? Part of the "horror" to losing one's photos is also losing the comments added to them over the years.)
Back to the install... I installed iLife 08 and it installed correctly. I checked to see what version of the applications I have in the dock on my desktop - I figured it would just import existing data (photos, tunes, etc.) into the newer version and replace it in the dock - +it only did this for iDVD+, of course it wasn't that easy for the others.
I can't find the newer version of iPhoto. My iPhoto in the dock still says version 2. iTunes in my dock is version 7 (7.4.2). iMovie is version 3 (3.0.3). But the new Garageband is there in the dock. And of course, iDVD is the newer version '08.
I am most concerned with iPhoto and making sure all the photos AND their comments import correctly into the newer iPhoto 08. I am nervous about this so I want to make sure I do the process correctly.
I also want to make sure my iTunes information imports correctly to the newer version as well.
    Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Kathy

If you backed up the iPhoto Library Folder then you got everything - photos, albums, comments etc

The Dock is not important. Look in your Applications Folder for iPhoto 08. That's where it should be. The Dock is just a shortcut to that. What version is in your Apps folder?
To upgrade a Library from v2 to iPhoto 08 all you do is open the Library with the newer version.

  • I'd like to use iPhoto '09 with Lion. Tried to install from time machine back-up no go. Tried to install from iLife '09 DVD no go.

I'd like to run iPhoto '09 on Lion. Tried to install on Lion from Time Machine backup. Got message iPhoto won't work because of a missing Library file. Tried to install iPhoto '09 from iLife '09 DVD. Got message that it cannot be installed on my system. iMovie runs previous versions and iTunes runs previous versions.
Why can't iPhoto run on Lion? My wife has over 10,000 photos in her library and she's taken the time to sort them into folders. I've recovered the library with the folder sort but have to use it on an external drive with a Snow Leopard system on it. The latest iPhoto ('11) has no provision for organizing into folders. I'd really like to have everything in one place with one OS (Lion) and two iPhoto apps '09 and '11 and I suppose 2 photo libraries. I've been trying to resolve this ever since iPhoto '11 came out and I installed it. I can't begin to tell you how difficult it is to answer the question " Where are my folders?" brian25

I tried to check the Library setup on iMovie and iTunes. The iMovie Libraries seem to be part of the applications and my iTunes applications have become Russian so I have another problem. I tried to install iPhoto '09 again from my iLife '09 disk. When I selected "Custom Install" to load iPhoto only, the box I got said " A later version of this application is already installed" The iPhoto item which I would choose for a custom install says "skip". Yesterday I ignored this and went on with an install. The final screen said "Installation Successful" There was no iPhoto '09 on my hard drive. As far as I can tell, you cannot load iPhoto '09 from a Time Machine backup. There is no Lion compatable iPhoto '09 in the App store, and iPhoto '09 will not install onto Lion from the iLife '09 disk.I don't understand exactly what you mean by "load my backup and convert again" Do you mean go to the app store and access my purchases and re- download iPhoto '11 and reinstall it and re-convert my iPhoto library? I suppose what I should have done originally was to duplicate my iPhoto '09 library and put it on an external drive for safekeeping. Who knew it wouldn't install on Lion from Time Machine? When I downloaded iPhoto '!! from the app store I should have duplicated it and saved a copy to an external hard drive for safekeeping and then proceeded with installing iPhoto '11 on my hard drive.I suppose when the Thunderbolt concept is fully realized and monster Thunderbolt external droves are in common use this will seem a lot easier. I have rebuilt my iPhoto '09 library and have it on a hard disk that has a bootable copy of Snow Leopard and a working copy of iPhoto '09 also. I think you are telling me to reinstall iPhoto '11 on my internal hard drive and reconvert the iPhoto library used by iPhoto '11. Right? brian25

  • Can I install Garageband from iLife 2008 on Macbook Pro 10.8?

Can I install Garageband from iLife 2008 onto a Macbook pro 10.8, recently bought?

What sort of YouTube app are you looking for?
My receiver has AirPlay so I can play iTunes music through it - never tried YouTube - I'm guessing that would need an Apple TV.

First, you need to send the project to iTunes:

From there, you can then sync it to your phone:

  • How do I upgrade to the new iPhoto from iLife 11 from iPhoto 8.1.2?

I have iPhoto 8.1.2 running on a MacBookPro using OS X 10.7.2.  When I went to the App Store to buy iPhoto from iLife 11, it pointed out I had 8.1.2 installed but not purchased from the App Store, and asked if I wanted to buy iPhoto 9.2.  Do I have to buy 9.2 first, then 11?

Marketing names and version numbers are confusing.
The marketing name iPhoto 6 corresponded to the version 6
The marketing name iPhoto 08 corresponded to the version 7
The marketing name iPhoto 09 corresponded to the version 8
The marketing name iPhoto 11 corresponded to the version 9
So, v9.2 is the current version of iPhoto 11.
Not that this is confusing or anything.

  • Uploading from iLife into iWeb from multiple computers?

I have a cart with 20 Macbooks for my 5th graders. We have one .Mac account. Can I have them publish stuff from iLife on their individual Macbooks to the one iWeb site we have on our .Mac account? If not, is there a way to take the pages they create in iWeb and upload them from my computer? I have a Macbook Pro and and ARD.

    Roddy
Won't publishing to the single .Mac account just overwrite the existing website each time so that only one website is published at any one time? I think .Mac is based on a 1:1 relationship between accounts and people. It is the same problem of having two different people with two different iWeb-sites publishing to a single .Mac account (unless I am misunderstanding your solution).
CarmenIbanez, I would think that you would have to do this in one of two ways:
    Solution 1
    1. Have each child publish to a folder
    2. You would collect them and publish them to the iDisk portion of .Mac (the advanced HTML option for HomePage)
    3. Optional: You could then publish an iWeb site yourself with links to each of these sites to act as the "front-end"
    Solution 2
Sign each child up with a temporary .Mac account and have them publish to their own temporary accounts which would be available for 60 days.
There might also be a way to "merge" multiple Domain.sites2 files - and if there is, you could then just do that and then publish to the .Mac account after everyone saves their work.

  • Iphoto won't open.  Reinstalled from iLife.  Little thing just spins and spins.  Any suggestions? disk and still nothing.

iPhoto won't open.  Little circle/wheel icon just keeps spinning.  Reinstalled from iLife disk, and still no luck.  Any suggestions?

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Restoring original iWeb from iLife CD installation and the iWeb 1.1 problem

I was thinking of reinstalling the original iWeb from iLife CD and then republish my changes, but didnt want to make matters worst or lose my current iWeb online...
Anyone tried this? or any tips?

You need the following to succesfully downgrade to 1.0.1:
    1) a backup of your iWeb 1.0.1 Domain file from username/Library/Application Support/iWeb before you started using iWeb 1.1
    2) the iWeb 1.0.1 upgrade package
    3) iLife installer disk
To do it you need to:
    1) Delete the receipts first:
    hard-drive/Library/Receipts/iWebApp.pkg
    hard-drive/Library/Receipts/iWeb_101.pkg
    hard-drive/Library/Receipts/iWeb_11.pkg
    2) Delete the iWeb application.
    3) Then reinstall iWeb from your iLife disk. Then update back to 1.0.1.
    4) Put your old 1.0.1 Domain file into the correct place and open iWeb 1.0.1!
I downgraded to 1.0.1 using a backup of my 1.0.1 Domain file successfully with no problems.

  • IDVD won't install from iLife '09 disk

Are there any reports of bad iLife '09 DVD pressings? I just tried to install iLife on two of my late model Macs- a Dual 2.3GHz Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) with Superdrive, and an Intel iMac 24" (Mid-2007) model- and the installer grayed out the iDVD selection in the Custom Install on both machines, telling me that it could only install iDVD on Macs with a SuperDrive. WTH? They BOTH have SuperDrives, and they each have an install of iDVD from iLife '08. I know that these SuperDrives both work, because I've used iDVD to burn DVDs on both of them. What am I missing?

Honestly I don't know if iDvd'08 vs. iDvd'09 are the very same version. But they are very close. Not much has changed if you are looking at iDvd alone. Still no blu-ray support within either version. Seems to me that Roxio Toast and it's Blu-ray plug in, picks up where iDvd left off (with the exception of Apple's Final Cut Studio which is much more money and has rather large learning curve).
Btw, this is not intended to compare Toast with iDvd since really one is authoring software vs. a disc burning utility. It's like comparing apples and oranges (no pun intended). However, Toast is getting more improvements lately vs. iDvd.
Did a search on Yahoo and here's what came up which seems like a valid assessment:
iLife '09 isn't as large of an update as previous iLife releases. In fact, iDVD was hardly changed, if at all. GarageBand received a facelift and has a bunch of new features, probably the most prominent of which being the artist lessons. iMovie got a few new features like image stabilization, themes and more, and isn't as annoying to use as the previous version. iPhoto got a lot of small tweaks, as well as the Faces and Places features and integration with Facebook and Flickr. iWeb also got a few enhancements, like more themes, more publishing options, and more widgets.
As for which is better, go with iLife '09. Both are good suites of applications, but if you have the money, go ahead and upgrade. The few new features you'll find are worth it.

  • Uninstalling iPhoto Update from iLife

Does anyone know how to uninstall the iPhoto update from iLife (and even for iMovie too)? I really don't like the new iPhoto as simple things are now more difficult or aren't available anymore. The changes seem more superficial as I haven't found any new tools or processes that help. Don't even get me started on the iMovie problems. Please tell me there is a way to go back.

iPhoto 7 did not make things harder to do, in fact it is virtually identical to the previous version!
I generally agree - But a few things are different and there is a requirement that a user LEARN how to use the new features and those that have changed - for doing that you get a greatly expanded capability so IMHO it is a great trade off - but for a user who is unable or unwilling to learn a few new things it can be difficult - as can ANY new version of ANY new software

I had this same problem. There is probaby a iTunes help file or something like that running in the background. I think you can look in system profiler and find what is running and shut it down. Once you do this you should be able to load iPhoto for the iLife disk. I am not at my mac right now. I will check this evening when I get home and see where I found the file running and post a more detailed response.

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

  • Upgrading from iLife '04

I've seen that some people have had problems upgrading from iLife '04. I just wanted to know, is it fully possible? I was planning on getting iLife '06 but I want to make sure it will work.
    Thanks

    realitymask:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Yes it's possible. I suggest you do a couple of thing prior to upgrading:
1 - do a rebuild of your library (launch iPhoto with the CommandOptionShift keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
2 - move the old library folder to the trash and make duplicate of the newly rebuild one.
3 - run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions.
4 - run the iLife 06 installer and install the applications you want.
5 - update each application to the latest version before using them for the first time.
6 - run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions again.
7 - download and run BatChmod on your iPhoto Library folders, both copies with the settings seen here.
8 - launch iPhoto and it will find your V4 library folder and tell you it needs to be updated. Select yes and go for it.

  • How do you uninstall iDVD from iLife '08?

I've tried numerous times to remove the iDVD components from *iLife '08* from my system so that I can reinstall iDVD from *iLife '06*. (Why Apple does not provide an Uninstall option is a mystery to me.) I've removed the application file and the Preferences file, but there must be other files that I'm overlooking (such as the Themes file). Can anyone provide me with a _list of all the components_ (by exact file name) I need to remove along with the _exact paths_ to their locations? iDVD/iLife '08 will not run correctly on my system, so I really need to try and reinstall *iDVD/iLife '06*. If anyone can provide such a list I'm sure it will help a great number of people who run into similar problems, and you will be a hero forever! Many Thanks.

    bearinthewoods:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You can install iDVD 6 and run it but as Ian pointed out you'll probably have to manually import photos, iMovie files, etc. into an iDVD project. The media browser probably won't work. You can certainly try it though. To uninstall iDVD 7 delete the application, the preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, and all files with iDVD in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder.

  • Upgrade from iLife 08 to iLife 11?

So I never updated from iLife 08 to 09. I want to make the jump to iLife 11 for a variety of reasons (manly the upgrades to iMovie) - but I'm really unclear if I need to buy and upgrade to iLife 09 first or can just buy iLife 11.
I even went to an Apple store and asked two of the clerks there who weren't sure!
    Does anyone know?
If I have to buy both iLife 09 and iLife 11 and make the Snow Leopard update - it's getting into the price range that I might as well consider getting Final Cut instead.
I'd really prefer to just spend the $50 on iLife 11, if I can.
    Thanks.

Hey! I have a Macbook that I bought at the beginning of 09 that has iLife 08. So the iMovie on it was missing some features and I bought iLife 11 today. But when I try to install it, I get the message that my computer is not compatible and I need Mac OS X 10.6.3 or later and mine is 10.5.8
But I talked to the guys at the Apple store and told them what year my Macbook was before I bought iLife11 and they said it will work fine. What do I do? I've updated everything I can. I could go back and talk to them tomorrow, but I had already opened the box. Why would they sell me something I cannot use? Or is there a way for me to update?
    Thanks
