To keep a back up of original Jpeg files from camera or not?

Somewhat new to Mac coming from PC world. I also have a PC lap top that I have some of my pictures on. I have all of my actual jpeg files from my old PC on the Mac and then have imported copies of them into iphoto.
I have searched these discussions and can't find my question answered so hope I can explain and get an answer.
I think I understand how iphoto works and about the library. I am enjoying using it, but with problems others have from time to time I would think most people would still want a backup of their actual jpeg files stored on DVDs or external hard disk is storage space is not a problem. I can see if you only use a Mac and keep a backup of your iphoto library you would be fine, but if you changed back to a PC this library backup would not work and you would still want a copy of all your original jpeg files to start over on a PC.
Do any of you keep a backup of your original files backed up?

I definitely know not to make any changes in the iphoto library itself.
Good that goes a LONG way toward avoiding problesm
If I understand you correctly is there a way from within iPhoto to isolate all of your orginal files, if that is what you want, to transfer just them to an external in order to then load on a different PC computer i.e. my laptop?
iPhoto does that - all originals are in a folder in the iPhoto library named "originals" - you can copy it for use somewhere else (I do not recommend it but you can and if you make no mistakes it is safe - i make lots of mistakes so sty out of my iPhoto library) or select the Photos you want elsewhere and export with kind = original
I have a 2TB WD external drive I am using with Time Machine, so my iPhoto library is backed up there. Would you also suggest, to be perfectly safe, backing up the iPhoto library to a 2nd external.
I personally do that - it is certainly a personal choice and and be overkill - but I do it
As I add new pictures to iPhoto and backup to this 2nd external would the library file just overwrite the previous backup?
again your choice - I keep about 4 versions plus the current one on my internal drive which get daily cloned to my EHD - essentially overwriting the old so my EHD is never more thatn a day behind my main system (except when I do an major upgrade and turn the EHD off for two to three weeks to be sure the upgrade went ok)
I don't want to sound paranoid, but I just cringe when reading posts of people losing all of there pictures.
Its hard not to be paranoid when everyone is out to get you - and hard to be too paranoid when it comes to backups - bad stuff will happen
But as to reading about people losing all of their photos - that does not happen - in all of the posts I've read here I have not seen a single case of iPhoto or the Mac losing a single photo - iPhoto has lost track of them (mostly due to user mistakes - sometimes computer glitches) and people have had to start over with their originals losing their keywords, edits, etc but no photos actually lost
So the short answer - I like having both a clone and a TM backup plus the other ones I make - it may be too much for you or you may do more - TD adds a web based backup to his scheme for example

  • Opening JPEG files from Camera RAW

Hi - I just installed ACR V4.1 on my PC. I have PS CS3 installed...My understanding is that from Bridge I could click on a JPG file and it would open ACR 4.1 directly. At the moment i click on the file and PS CS3 open and then it loads ACR.
Is this the normal behaviour ? before CS3/ACR 4.1 I use to hit CTR-r with genuine RAW/dng fileS and ACR loaded fine without loading CS3...
I checked the prefs in Adobe and they are set with preference to open JPEG/Tiff.s with ACR.
I wanted to point out that I also have Lightroom, not sure if any changes under LR would conflict opening the file with ACR...
Thanks for any help you could provide..
    cheers,
    A

The big advantage to editing JPEG images in ACR is that all the changes are made nondestructively, the same as in Lightroom. As with raw images, one of your Bridge options is to right-click on the image and clear the settings to restore the image to its original state, unless you saved a JPEG and replaced the original in Photoshop. The new sharpening and clarity controls in ACR 4.1 work as well on JPEG images as they do raw images. I prefer doing my initial editing in ACR regardless of whether I am working with JPEG or raw images.
A JPEG image is an 8-bit image. You can change your output options in ACR so that the image will be imported into Photoshop as a 16-bit image, but I'm not sure how much benefit will be gained from doing that. If you choose to do it this way, it will still be necessary for you to convert back to an 8-bit image before you will be able to save it as a JPEG again.

  • Jpeg files on camera are not recognized by iphoto and won't import

Kodak EasyShare Z712 IS is connected via USB and recognized by iPhoto, however none of these files are importing because the files are unreadable and in an unrecognized format. An example file name and ext that is not importing is "100_2327.JPG".
I do not have a card reader and currently the only way I can get photos from my camera onto my hard drive is using the USB cable.
Thanks in advance for your consideration

Had the same problem after ? upgrade (before everything worked well with my Canon EOS 450) Found out that import worked fine when connecting to my wife's iMac - so, it could not be the camera or formatting og the cameras memory...
Problem was definitively located to connection via USB hub build in to Apple Monitor!!! When connecting to USB connector on keyboard, everything works well - connecting back to Apple Cinema Display (connected to MacBook) is reproducing the same error. I assume that the same may happen with other hubs? But not tested!

To change your Apple ID, follow these steps:
Go to My Apple ID (appleid.apple.com), click "Manage your Apple ID", and sign in.
If you have two-step verification turned on, you'll be asked to send a verification code to the trusted device associated with your Apple ID. If you are unable to receive messages at your trusted device, follow the guidelines for what to do if you can't sign in with two-step verification.
In the "Apple ID and Primary Email Address section," click Edit.
Enter the email address you want to use, then  click Save Changes. Apple will send a verification email to that  address.
Open the  email  from Apple, then click Verify Now in the email.
When the My Apple ID page opens, sign in with your renamed Apple ID.
If you have two-step verification turned on, you'll be asked to send a verification code to the trusted device associated with your Apple ID.
After you see a message indicating that verification is complete, remember to update all of the stores and services that you use with your  Apple ID.

  • Recovered files in the trash.  How do I put them back to their original place so that they do not keep being recovered very time I open my Mac?

I keep getting the same recovered files in the trash.  How do I put them back to their original place so that they do not keep being recovered very time I open my Mac?

The recovered files are temporary files used by Mac OS X applications. Usually temporary files are deleted by an application when it no longer needs them. If an application quits unexpectedly, the temporary files may not be deleted by the application. When you restart your computer, Mac OS X moves these temporary files to the Trash.
You can retrieve useful files by dragging them out of the Trash. In most cases, however, the temporary files are not important and it is safe to empty your Trash. Check with the manufacturer of the application if you are not sure.

  • I have a classic iPod with songs that were put on it from a different computer. If I plug it up to my computer, will it keep the songs that were originally on it from the previous computer AND allow me to put new songs on it from my computer?

I have a classic iPod with songs that were put on it from a different computer. If I plug it up to my computer, will it keep the songs that were originally on it from the previous computer AND allow me to put new songs on it from my computer?

No.  Your iPod is designed to sync with one computer/iTunes library at a time. If you try to sync it with a new computer/iTunes library, the contents currently on the iPod will be erased and replaced with content from the new library.  So you'll want to copy what is currently on the iPod over to your new iTunes library first before syncing it.
See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • After syncing a JPEG photo from ITUNES to IPAD, how large is the file on IPAD?  does the answer depend on the size of the original JPEG file in ITUNES?

    1)  Does downsizing the original jpeg photos to be synced with IPAD help reduce the total storage required on IPAD for the photos? What is the relationship between original JPEG file size in ITUNES vs final synced photo file size on IPAD?

    Thank you for your response.
The sync process compresses the JPEG files -- the question is how much, so that I can determine a) how many photos 32 gigs will store in sync, and b) can I reduce the memory required by taking smaller jpeg files with my camera

  • If I want to keep the quality of the original captured footage(from the tapes),what format should I?

I captured canon hv20 by firewire to my computer with adobe premiere elements 11. After capture, I have cutted clip three times. Then I want to export my computer because of I watch on my 46 inches full hd lcd television. If I want to keep the quality of the original captured footage (from the tapes), what format should I? I choosen mpeg 1440x1080i 24, it alerts error. Or i chosee avchd 1920x1080p, then it is too larger than captured scenes. I think it is 20000MB but captured scened (without cut) only 11.2 gb. Please help me. Thanks very much.

File size and Bitrate and Quality are interrelated. From what I have read, the bitrate for your HDV footage from the PAL Canon HV20 camcorder should be about 25 Mbps (megabits per second). If you did a HDV data capture firewire into Premiere Elements, you should MPEG2.mpg file on the Timeline.
    When you did your export
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    MPEG
using Presets = MPEG2 1440 x 1080i25, did you make any changes in the settings under the Advanced Button/Video Tab of the preset?
When you look at the settings in the Export Settings dialog for the MPEG 1440 x 1080i25 preset, you will see the default bitrate settings
    Minimum = 18 Mbps
    Target = 25 Mbps
    Maximum = 30 Mbps
The program's export bitrate may be higher than that of your source media, resulting in the increased file size. You can check out the bitrate, using the properties readout from a free program such a MediaInfo
    http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en
You could experiment with different bitrate, trying to maintain the quality as you decrease the maximum bitrate from 30 Mbps downward to reduce the file size.
The file extension of your export should be .m2t, .mpg. So, your export is MPEG2.m2t. I find that that type of file will playback in Windows Media Player, but not QuickTime (latest version). This particular export would be the closest to the source media properties.
But, right now I would try to perfect the MPEG2 1440 x 1080i25, experimenting with the bitrate to bring the file size into line with the source file and still maintain video quality. The AVCHD.mp4 suggested by Ann Bens is a prime candidate quality wise. If size becomes a factor, you might want to explore a 1920 x 1080i25 or 1440 x 1080i25 Windows Media Video 9.wmv file which we can discuss in more detail depending on how things are going.
Please review the above and then let us know how we can help.
    Thanks.

  • Why has adobe acrobat changed the dimensions of my original jpeg file?

Why has adobe acrobat changed the dimensions of my original jpeg file?  I uploaded an A3 jpeg file and adobe converted it to pdf but the scale is all wrong.  Why is this?  What can I do about it?

Normally if you open a graphic in Acrobat, it automatically adjusts the PDF to the size of the graphic. It sounds as though you are doing something else to create a PDF. It would help to know how you created the PDF, you seem to be suggesting you did it with an online tool and not Acrobat. In that case you should go to the appropriate product forum.

  • Can only open some JPEG files in Camera Raw through Bridge CS3

I'm running Bridge CS3 version 2.0.0.975. I always edit my JPEG files through Camera Raw in Bridge CS3. I only have to Right-Click on the file and select "Open in Camera Raw...". However, I've come into a situation where some jpg files will not open this way; the option is not even there.
I have made sure to tick the box in preferences under Behavior "Double-Click Edits Camera Raw Settings in Bridge", and also tick the box under Thumbnails -> Performance and File Handling "Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG and TIFF Files.
These files were originally 16bit Grayscale TIFF files, but I changed them to RGB 8bit JPEG files.
Also, I know the program works because I navigate to an older photo I worked which is a JPEG and the "Open in Camera Raw..." option is there when I Right-Click, but then I navigate back to the image I want to edit, and the option is not there.
Here are links to my screenshots of what I'm talking about. Both images in the last two screenshots are JPEG:

When I open Photoshop CS3, then go File -> Open As and change the Format Type to "Camera Raw", the JPEG files vanish and I can only see the TIF files. When I open them, it doesn't open in Camera Raw, but rather opens like a normal file would.
That's a fundamental problem right there, and a clue in all this.  You should be able to see JPEGs in the Open As Camera Raw dialog.
What happens if you type in the name?
I'm almost convinced you have a file named .jpg but with a different image format inside.  Can you put one of these files online for others to try to open?

  • Can not open JPEG files and can not create JPEG files from other software

Can not open JPEG files and can not create JPEG files from other software (For example from Solidworks).
When I try to right click on a JPEG, a notice window appears written: "Windows Explorer has stopped working - Windows is
checking for a solution to the problem" and then the notice box disapears, the desktop appears and I can continue working.
From the other side - If I try to save as JPEG a screen of Solidworks (like a view of a part) the Solidworks falls but the JPEG
is created (I can see its name in the directory I created it).
I can open the JPEGS with the Paint software if I want but not with the Windows Photo Viewer.
I have the feeling that the Windows Photo Viewer disapeared from my computer - just a feeling.
    I will appreciate your assistance.

  • Problem with JPEG files from Leica M and GPS data

It seems there's a serious bug in Camera Raw 8, hosted in Bridge CS6 on an MS Windows machine, with regard to GPS metadata.
When using a Leica M (Typ 240) with a multi-function handgrip then both the DNG files (DNG is Leica's native raw format) and the JPEG files out of the camera will include GPS position data in the respective EXIF metadata sections. However, Bridge refuses to display the JPEG files' GPS data (while there's no problem with the GPS data in the DNG files). Worse yet—when loading a JPEG file in Camera Raw for some parametric adjustments and saving the file then the GPS data will be entirely gone! (Again, no problems with the DNG files' GPS data.)
I suppose that Camera Raw 8 hosted in Bridge CC as well as Lightroom 5 are suffering from the same issue.

Nobody? Absolutely nobody?? Zalman? Eric? Anyone?

  • HOW do I copy jpeg files from my Windows PC to my iPad2?

How do I copy jpeg files from my Windows PC, to my iPad2?

If you are on iTunes 11 on your PC then you may want to enable the left-hand sidebar via View > Show Sidebar (or control-S), which might make it easier to navigate.
To sync photos, connect and select your iPad on the left-hand sidebar of your computer's iTunes, and on the right-hand side there should be a series of tabs, one of which should be Photos - if you select that tab you can then select which photo folders to sync to the iPad's Photos app. There is a bit more info on this page. You will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync.
