To macbook or not
Hi, I know you guys are probably getting tired of answering questions like this, but I have read alot of the questions on the forum and find my situation borderline. I am a computer science student who will be using my macbook for basic productivity, photoshop, dreamweaver, various compilers, and some basic 3d rendering. I do not play games. I really hate windows(5 installs or so this year), but i am unsure as to whether or not i can go withouts a discrete graphics card. I cannot afford a mbp, so it is a macbook(with extra ram) or a windows-only machine with a slightly slower processor and a discrete graphics card. Any feedback would be greatly apreciated. Thank you!
very broken hp 2.8ghz p4 laptop Windows XP Pro dual boot unbuntu linux
I hate to say this, but save yourself the trouble and money by getting a PC laptop and running Linux on it. Apple's quality control has gone seriously downhill lately. The MacBook is the kind of product you'd expect from a third rate Korean company, not a premium priced computer. It absolutely doesn't warrant the price. Using my MacBook is as frustrating as using Windows 98 used to be. It randomly shuts off at least once a day for no apparent reason at all, losing any unsaved files or pages that you might have open. It is really hypocritical for Apple to run those "I am PC and I am a Mac" commercials where the PC has to reboot and the Mac doesn't know how it is. My dad's year old Windows XP Dell machine is much more stable than my new MacBook.
This is completely unacceptable for a new machine. If I send it in for repair, I will be without a computer for at least a week, and that's if I am lucky. When I had to get the DVD drive of my G4 powerbook fixed a few years ago, it took Apple Care more than three weeks to get it back to me. At this point, for me at least, the advantages of using Mac OS X no longer outweigh the troubles of dealing with Apple's sub-par hardware.
If you do get a MacBook, especially as CS student, make sure you save your projects every 5 minutes and you keep multiple backups.

I upgaraded to iTunes 7.6 and now my MacBook is not working at all
I'm posting from an internet cafe so I wont be able to reply, but can anyone tell me what happened to my MacBook last night?
(it's going back to the shop tomorrow BTW)
Was using safari and iTunes, suddenly it starting hanging, so after some perseverance I managed to get (Ithink) all of my windows closed. Then there was this software upgrade window open. I clicked check for software updates, and it prompted me with 4 upgrades, one for quicktime and one for iTunes 7.6. I didn't spend much time reading what the other two were as I kind of trusted apple that the content I was downloading was kosher.
I go to the kitchen and come back tem minutes later to find it was aksing me if I wanted to restart. So I clicked restart and it wouldn't shut down. So then I held now the on/off button and turned it on.
THEN when I turned it back it all I got was the registration procedure, and I tried many things and several times I went through the registration process you get when you first use it again, only when you click done at the end it goes back to the start. There is no way that I can the OS system to boot again. I've tried closing it down, forcing quit, I've tried the boot CD it comes with, nothing works.
Is my machine bricked? Did I do something wrong?
I don't understand it.
It also says that I have 88Gb of memory which leads me to beleive that my data is still on there. Will it be retreivable?
I didn't back up my HD, I was saving to buy an external drive, but I have all my iTunes purchases on my 2Gb iPod. Only the 50 CD's I put into it over Xmas are not backed up anywhere, and all my CD's are currently back home in scotland.
MODS this is a serious issue here, if you feel it deserves more attention in another sub forum feel free to move it and retitle if you like. I don't know what caused it, but I thought I would start here since a lot of people seem to be having trouble with iTunes 7.6.

Message was edited by: STU9000I have no idea what may have caused your MacBook to stop working, but from your description it kind of sounds like it may have started before you ran Software Update and installed the new Apps. Just the general slow feeling and bugginess is what tips me off. You said that you weren't sure if you had closed all open windows, that doesn't matter if the computer restarts itself. It automatically closes all other open applications when restarting.
As to your data being retrievable, if when you take it in they do a fresh install of the OS, then no, it will not be unless you want to pay several thousand dollars to a software retrieval company.
I am glad to hear that you have taken into the Apple Store to get it fixed, and that you have all of your purchased music backed up to your iPod. You should be able to just transfer it all back to iTunes once you get your computer back should it be necessary.
As a side note, the proper place for this topic would probably in the MacBook forums, not iTunes since there is no evidence that iTunes started the issue. -

hello everbody,

A MacBook Air was reported stolen
From a room at my hotel that belong to a guest. I request a apple Id and password from the guest in order to track it though iCloud, when I login into the account the MacBook was not their, however I saw other device. A few days has past then the MacBook appear. How does that happened, please explain? For a stolen Macbook to appear in iCloud - the person who stole it must turn it on.
You can't track something that's turned off. -
I've been a Mac since 2008, so I know my way around the system pretty well. This issue, however, has me stumped. I had an iMac until now and only now am I experiencing some difficulty with my new MacBook Pro. The model I have is the newest 13" Macbook Pro model and I'm trying to connect a Panasonic VIERA TC-L42U30 42" HDTV as a second monitor via the Thunderbolt port.
It worked the first two times and hasn't worked since, after 10-15 attempts with different configurations, turning things on n off, restarting the mac, unplugging the cables, adapters, TV, resetting the P RAM, etc... I've used multiple hdmi-thunderbolt/mini displayport adapters and multiple hdmi cables and still no success. No matter what I do, the Macbook does not sense the TV as a second monitor anymore.
I took the MacBook Pro to the Apple Store, and their "genius" there had it working fine with a DVI connection to a regular monitor. The Panasonic TV I have has HDMI connections and one VGA connection which does not support HD, but no DVI option. I want an HD connection to mirror or extend my MacBook Pro screen. At the Apple Store, they didn't have a Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, so he could not try that out for me.
Anyone else have this configuration or another similar one with a Panasonic HDTV?
Ideas? Suggestions? Anything?! Help!!
P.S. I'm running Mountain Lion, if that wasn't already obvious. Everything is up to date in my App Store as well.
Thanks!Hi There,
I have had the exact same issue but with a projector.
The issue lies with Mountian Lion 10.8.2.
I tried many a combination with no luck to get HDMI working.
Took my mac into the apple store and came to the conclusion it was the software, so I asked them to install 10.8 onto it (this is destructive so a backup is a must)
Bought my macbook home and voila, now displaying through my projector.
There is a small graphics update after 10.8.1 which seems to be the cause.
Hope this helps.
Thanks. -
The disc drive works fine, and it reads the dvd, but when DVD Player goes to open it starts the program then immediately terminates. On a side note, some other apps (most notably iPhoto) seem to not even want to start, is this due to mountian lion or something that happened during set up? my macbook is not even a month old, but i know the new OS still needs to work some bugs out. am I the only one experiencing this and do you think this is a result of the new OS? or is it an induvidual problem? here is the crash report for DVD Player, thanks:

hi, how do i stop my macbook pro not to automatically connect to a wifi connection that is not my preferred network? i want to automatically connect my macbook to my preferred network everytime i turn on my laptop. thank you.
System Preferences > Network > WiFi
To give a network the highest priority, drag the name of the network to the top of the list. This is the network your computer will attempt to join first.

How do i update 10.5.8 if my macbook does not show any software updates?
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
Snow Leopard General Requirements
1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
2. 1GB of memory
3. 5GB of available disk space
4. DVD drive for installation
5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
fees may apply.
6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
Model Identifier 5,1 or later
3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
Lion System Requirements
1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
or Xeon processor
2. 2GB of memory
3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
4. 7GB of available space
5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply. -
when i burn videos to a dvd-r disc it works on my macbook but not on a windows/pc or my dvd player. How can i make it work on all the above and not just a mac product?
Unfortunately, the recording & movie industry does not respect the rights of the people who make them money, and thus you can only use the paid-for content in ways they see fit. Even if I lived in a bunker where no one else could possibly see the movie I paid for, therefor I'm not 'sharing it illegally', I would still not be allowed in a blue moon to copy that movie to DVD for TV viewing. Someone will tell you to get an AppleTV. How about Apple give us one for free? Until this changes, people wanting to use their content in multiple locations will continue to download music & movies via torrents, legally or illegally.

I can't install my Kodak printer because my new Macbook does not have a DVD slot, as my old Macbook had. How do I install the printer without a DVD? My Kodak printer is not listed anywhere.

I installed a new 'used' Logic board, im my macbook 13.3 and it turned right on!..( i was out of warrenty)
Apple logo and spiing wheel, then turns off..
After reading several forums, I went into self mode, did the 2 checks within in and got an error which pointed to the OS software being currupted..
so I have inserted the Os disk, the disk-repair disk and a disk warrior disk, but none of them are being read. I hear the Macbook starting to read the disk then the disks are ejected and the systen turns off.
Is there a way i can do a clean install on the HD? shortcut keyboard shortcuts?
or force the disks to be read as the first boot device like of that in a PC's bios settup?
I have no data on the computer that I wish to save btw.. just want a fresh install..
thanks for any help in advance.Unfortunately the necessary software to reinstall your OS is not located on the hard drive. If your MacBook will not accept the disks you have you are going to need a hardware repair, probably the optical drive.
If you have access to another MacBook you may be able to install the OS on an external hard drive and use that to boot your MacBook. You may then be able to get any data off of your hard drive.
Best of luck. -
Mid 2009 MacBook Pro not reading SSD? Help
I have bought a Kingston Hyperx SSD for my mid 2009 MacBook Pro but the laptop does not see the SSD. I have booted the SSD externally installed OSX and it boots fine on the laptop but NOT when fitted internally. Is this a firmware/software problem or is my MacBook simply not compatible with this drive? I have tried everything I can think of and the IT guy at my work has not got a clue either! ImGuessing a standard HD will work but as my old HD died I wanted to go to SSD.
Need some help ASAP!
Thanks!
SamThe 2009 models were notorious for having faulty SATA cables and I'm betting that's the problem. Go to www.ifixit.com, find the part number for the SATA cable and search eBay for a replacement cable (ifixit simply want too much for the cable - and I've never known anyone who has received a faulty cable from anyone on eBay).
I'm at least 95% certain that's your problem.
Good luck,
Clinton

The macbook will not start.
The macbook will not start. begins with "Deng", then the initial blank screen with flashing folder and question mark. Unfortunately, the DVD player is dead. I tried with a USB external drive and the installation disk but nothing happens (keys, C, D or N). I managed to get the mouse pointer on a blank screen by holding the alt key at startup.
My impression is that the disc is filled abnormally and can no longer boot. Probably jumped the permissions. I explain: the disk was almost full. Then my wife tried to connect to a site (German) images (art history) who was struggling to load the large amount of data downloaded. At that point the machine was stopped and forcibly turned off. From the day after is no longer divided.
I have no idea how to do it again and all attempts have failed. As a last test I can try with another mac connected and with the T key pressed (target). But I ask: can I connect with a USB-USB cable?Thank's for answer.
The internal DVD player is broken. I have an external DVD drive (USB). I have the install DVD for the OS. But the evidence that I did not have success. What evidence do you recommend? May you confirm that the USB connection is useless? We need a firewire cable crossed? -
My macbook will not boot. It goes to a blue screen after the logo and wheel goes off. I have taken the battery out and held the on/off button for five seconds and reset the PRAM. I have the the original os disk but have not put it in for fear of losing un backed op data.
Thanks
RichYou won't lose any data unless you erase your hard drive.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c"key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it.When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've selected the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. -
Macbook will not boot up after running Software Update
My MacBook will not boot up after running Software Update (Security update + Java?) earlier today. I have only the gray start up screen + Apple logo + gear wheel constantly rotating. I have tried restarts several times and tried to start up from my original system DVD - this makes no difference.
I called Apple support, tried resetting the power and PRAM - still no difference. He had no knowledge of other problems reported; although I note recent post may have same issue.
I cannot get an appointment at my Apple Store before Monday.
Any suggestions?Still no success. When I hold down the option key when powering up I get the hard disk icon plus arrowhead (only). When clicking the arrowhead it goes to the gray screen + apple logo+ rotating gearwheel.
This happens both with DVD in slot and without DVD. the DVD image is not coming up on screen. When I start up without DVD the hard disk icon appears promptly. When I start with DVD in the DVD is spinning for a short period before the hard disk icon appears. On clicking the arrowhead to hard disk icon the DVD spins again for a while then stops. Apart from the DVD spinning, both situations result in gray screen + apple logo+ rotating gearwheel.
