To Nokia: have you forgotten about firmware update...

Seriously,  just making sure that the code didn't fall somewhere through the cracks. 0591930 is a product code for NAM (north american) version of N97 mini, just like 0584971. The difference is that the latter have already received firmware upgrade, whereas the owners of 0591930 are still waiting and getting more and more impatient. Can you please include us in FW update as well?
Also, since on the subject, let me mention something that I find really annoying. I use bluetooth most of the time, either walking around at work with a headset or driving and using handsfree, and all that time I have phone in my pocket. Now, almost all bluetooth devices nowadays have an answer button, so you can make or receive calls without reaching for the device. So explain this to me: why whenever I answer the call using bluetooth, the keypad/screen unlocks? For me it doesn't make any sense. It happened with my E51, and still happens with my N97 mini. I'm driving in the car, the phone rings, I answer using bluetooth, and next thing I know I either "hang up" (involuntarily) or activate gazillion programs/settings on the phone because even though I never removed it from my pocket, the screen became active and started accepting all kinds of touches. Same thing with keypad on E51 - suddenly the buttons become pressed, even though when I put it in my pocket (before the phone rang) I made sure the keys are locked. So the only thing you can really do while driving, even though you're using so called "handsfree", is to answer the phone, dig it out of your pocket while hoping that the RED button or HANG UP square are not pressed, lock the keys/screen AGAIN, and then put it back. Until someone else doesn't call that is... How stupid is that? Unless, of course, there is some hidden purpose to this action that I don't understand. Still, I'd like a choice somewhere in settings that would let me decide whether or not I want my keys/screen to unlock as I answer my phone via bluetooth...

LOL. I just realized that you actually think a firmware request on this site would work? This is not a tech forum. We are not Nokia employees. This is a user-to-user forum. You'd be lucky if any Nokia employee has read this, or will be able to read this. Chances of that are like, nil. Moderators dont answer queries. Also, Nokia is not the only factor in delayed firmware. Let me explain.
1. Network branded - some phones have product codes that are branded to a certain company. Even if your phone came SIM free from a store, it does not guarantee that it is unbranded. TMobile supplies SIM free phones, but their phones are all branded for example. These phones will only get firmware upgrades IF the network or company to which they are branded approves the firmware for their phones.
2. Country Variant - Some countries require a special variant for their own. China for example has a 3G disabled country variant. India has a country variant which locks which apps the phones there can use (some apps for Nokia India arent usable on phones bought outside India), Some Euro countries have different qwerty keyboards (azerty for example). Some countries' variants have no noticeable difference but they are still country variants (Philippine variant, for example). AFAIK these variants require approval from local telecom bureaucracies before getting their update. This was also cited as one of the possible reasons why UK has late updates.
3. Special Edition phones - are made for a special reason, like a company promotion, or a holiday, etc. An example would be the Middle Eastern Ramadan Edition. It has certain apps available for it alone. these apps are firmware embedded so it needs a separate firmware from the generic ones. These often get firmware last or never, since firmware for this may only be released upon request from the sponsoring company, or by the country who requested the special edition.

  • How do those who don't watch boards find out about firmware updates?

Since 'Software Update' doesn't alert users to firmware updates, I wonder how those that don't monitor these boards and other 'Mac news' sites find out about firmware updates?
Yes, Boot Camp made headline news in many major newspapers and those who wanted to install it found they needed to update the firmware first.
But, had I not read about it elsewhere earlier, I would not have known about the second MBP firmware update (which, apparently, solves some of the 'whine' issues - I've had no whining but I like to keep my firmware, in particular, up to date!).
Just as a note to Apple - you've a database of all who have registered their MPB's (at least those with AppleCare if not those who simply run set-up with new Mac purchases). If firmware updates aren't included in the 'Software Updates' procedure, shooting off an email to those with machines that might be in need of firmware updates may save a world of grief to overworked phone support techs.

Yes, I'm familiar with the support page but my point is that not all (in act, likely very few) are familiar enough with that page to go to "Top Downloads" to find firmware updates.
On page 25 of the MacBook Pro Users Guide, Apple DOES suggest, in the next to the last paragraph, suggest "For support information, user discussion boards, and the latest Apple software downloads, go to www.apple.com/support."
But if a new user is having problems he or she is more likely than not to pick up the phone first - and although there's the 90-day phone support and 3 year phone support for those who purchase AppleCare (which new users may not - particularly if buying from, say, CompUSA or other stores who push 'extended warranties' even with the purchase of products whose manufacturers already provide LIFETIME warranties) Apple has thoughtfully provided automated Software Updates (which Windows switchers understand all too well!) but no automated way to be lead to firmware updates. It's my feeling that if firmware notification were included in SU notifications, or via email, it might reduce the number of phone calls and result in happier computers.
While I enjoy reading all the Mac news on a daily basis, a lot of users don't and there may be an even greater number who don't know the wheat from the chaff (or even know where to find the wheat!).
Some firmware updates are critical, some of minor importance, and some (more and more of late, it seems) just a bit cryptic (for instance, 1.01 says "This firmware update is for (MacBook Pro)/iMac (early 2006) computers with Intel processors only. It now runs on localized systems that use languages that read right to left." and then lists the languages supported - which do not include Hebrew or Arabic, two "languages that read right to left".
The only reason that I brought this up is that there are a number of sites that reported that the firmware update alleviates some of the 'whine' that some MBP users are reporting (and now I am reading of 'hum' issues - forget GarageBand! An hundred MBP's could replace a symphony!). Now is that true or not? Apple doesn't say - some users report yes, some no. And as there are no whine or hum issues on the iMac, I doubt 1.01 would 'solve' any of those problems with that machine (and interesting, too, that the "iMac (early 2006) Firmware Update 1.0.1" isn't in the "Top Downloads" section as is "MacBook Pro (early 2006) Firmware Update 1.0.1": what's up with that? Are there really more MBPs out there than Intel iMacs? Or are MBP owners running Windows in Arabic more than Intel iMac owners? Or just hopeful that the update does, indeed, help with the whine problem.
I keep getting off topic (sort of)...
...my point is that it would be simple to notify, and simpler for (in my opinion), Apple to notify customers of firmware updates.

  • IPad 3 light leak under the bezel? What have you done about it?

If you have an iPad 3. Tilt towards you, looking underneath the bezel (under the camera) has your iPad got any lights showing? It's not bleeding onto the screen, in fact it doesn't interfere at all under normal use of the iPad. I have read many forums and it does seem to be quite common, but i would like to know what have you done about it? Have you replaced within 14 days and got a brand new iPad and been satisfied ? Or have you had another with worse or different issues? Or have you ignored the issue and kept the iPad?
I walked into comet and the first iPad 3 I picked up had exactly the same issue. I asked the bloke, he said yes? It's no problem, it's common in led screens and with the iPads new retina screen your bound to get this problem on some but it's no problem as doesn't effect your everyday use. Not the point though is it, we pay 400-579 for this thing!
I also rang apple and they spoke with their technical team and they came back and said the lights under the bezel seems unusual. To try and restore the iPad and see if that solves it. Solves a hardware problem?? How did they get their jobs? Crazy. So now I am in the middle of returning the iPad for a replacement but I am debating whether to even bother as I have read a lot of replacements people have received have numerous other problems, like dead pixels, light leakage, scratches.
I would appreciate any feedback from those who have had this same issue and what did you do about it ?

Mine has some along the right side. It is very slight, and does not affect the screen, even with a black image displayed in a dark room. So I chose to ignore it. This iPad will be going back though, as the bottom half of the screen has a pink tint on it. My advice is to see if it affects a dark picture in a dark room. If it doesn't, I would keep it. But in the end, you have to make your own decision and be comfortable with it. :)

    Hi,
The Date on the the supposed Apple i-Phone Incorporated Certificate predates the iPhone's public release date.
    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone
It was not even available here until the November of the same year (10 Months after the date on the Certificate)
The Name "Apple i-Phone INC" does not seem to turn up anything for anyone in the United States.

  • What GOOD or NEW things have you noticed after the update?

What good things have you noticed since the update that were not mentioned in the update video?
One or two of these may have been already there, I might just be taking a closer look.
Faster screen switching in Phone mode
Ability to specify ports in email settings
    Slightly smoother scrolling in Contacts

More ways to spend money on iTunes. Nothing else. Guess we'll have to wait till OS 10.5 for possible inclusion of any real useful features.

  • Have you heard about "Softpedia" and the program "Burn"?

I ran across this site (Softpedia) from a Leo Laporte mac news podcast.
I have a CRT imac and have an external CD/DVD burner. I can play DVD's and CD's from this and have even burned CD's.
Have you heard about this site? Any good/bad news I should know about them?
I have upgraded my hard drive so I have over 100 GB of space, I’m running system 10.3. 500 megs of ram.
I know I don’t have toast, but may want to try burning a DVD, will Burn work? Have you Heard anything about this program. Free sounds good to me! But is it too good to be true?

Haven't heard about them . I use Disk Burner from centromedia ( http://www.centromedia.com/en/products/discburner/index.html ) that along with Patchburn ( http://www.patchburn.de/download.html ) . Patchburn I have because of the drive wouldn't be recognized without it ( came from an old HP pc ) Both are free . Disk Burner works great with iTunes , iMovie , iPhoto ,... it blends itself well with the OS just like it came with the system . Good luck.

  • Nokia E71 - Product 0578223 No firmware update

I have had my E71 for over 12 months now and had no issues, all of a sudden the device keeps turning itself off and is quite slow and unresponsive.
I checked for an update on the Nokia Update Checker site and on entering the following details:
    Product Code: 0578223
It states there is no updates, I find this quite bizarre when I see people on the net using 300.xx.xxx
I have phoned my provider Orange (UK) and they state to contact Nokia.
Anyone else having issues with this product code, or know of a solution to getting a firmware update?
My current firmware on the device is 200.21.118

Herewith my reply from Nokia Support:
Thank you for contacting Nokia Careline.
In response to your concern, we understand that you would like to update your phone's firmware. However, upon checking your phone's product code 059H6F1, the firmware version that is available for your phone is software version 021.014. For your reference, you may visit the link below:
    http://www.nokia.co.uk/appmanager/UnitedKingdomEnglishNOKIA_UK_23/Get_support;JSESSIONID_NCOM=G2ZNTN...
Furthermore, firmware version 021.014 is the general firmware for all Nokia E6-00 phones. Kindly be informed that there are factors that affect its distribution such as the following:
    1. Product code of handset (for there are certain compatible software for each variant as guided by the Federal Communications Commission and other related legal authorities).
    2. Country (there are designated firmwares for different countries as this also require the approval of Telecommunication authorities of each country).
    3. Network Service Provider (for they may not have approved the software yet due to their modifications on your handset which will be affected upon updating).
For future reference, please feel free to check our website. Kindly refer to the link below:
    http://www.nokia.co.uk/support
You may also call our Customer Care Hotline at 0845-045-5555, Mon-Fri 9am-7pm (except bank and public holidays).
Please do not hesitate to contact us again if you have any further questions.
It does rather beg the question as to why the firmware updates are displayed on their GB/UK E6-00 support pages, but that's Nokia !
    So you now we know!

  • Conflicting information from support pages about firmware update error

I recently opened my Macbook to see a firmware update. I followed the instructions to install it, however when I went to shut down to complete the process, I got an error: +"unexpected error occurred (0); unable to upgrade firmware"+
After several tries, some digging through the support articles yielded this information:
+Firmware updates for Intel-based Macs require a GUID partition scheme+
+Firmware updates will not install on an Intel-based Mac if the computer is using a non-standard partition scheme, such as an fdisk scheme. You may see an "unexpected error occurred (0); unable to upgrade firmware" error message, or your computer may start normally (after a single beep if the power button is held) when attempting to install the firmware update.+
So I followed the instructions to determine which partition scheme I had. It was "applepartitionscheme". I read further to see how to correct this, assuming I should to make sure I had the latest updates on my computer. After seeing that it required backing up data, and potentially my install disc, I decided to put my Service Plan money to work, and have Apple Support walk me through it, as I am still a rather novice Apple customer.
I admit I was frustrated that the man on the phone did not seem to understand that I already had a grasp on my problem, and that I bypassed a lot of the diagnostic steps already. I realize that tech support has to follow some step by step manual when talking to a customer, but sometimes I hate being patronized. (Yes, my monitor is on, yes I am connected to the internet. I am not stupid.) I explained I recently had the hard drive replaced. He walked me through "Repairing Permissions" using my install disc. This did not fix the issue. He explained that the update was probably not needed. It wasn't compatible with my computer, and that the techs who put my new drive in probably installed any updates I needed at Apple Care.
But, am I just really not educated enough in this? Wouldn't my computer say then if it had the most current update? When I check my version it reads : MB....B02, 1.13f3 but when I check under the list of latest update for Macbook it reads, MB...B07, 1.4f12. Is my new hard drive is indeed updated, but my "About This Mac" still thinks it has an older version? Am I going to have this problem with every update?
I find it hard to believe that after reading this highlighted tech support article:
+An Intel-based Mac's hard disk must be formatted with the GUID partition scheme to apply a firmware update. Intel-based Macs are shipped this way from the factory. If you have reformatted your hard drive, you should check which scheme your hard disk is currently using before applying a firmware update.+
that I don't need to fix this incompatibility. Can anyone help with this?

At that point say you are not satisfied and you would like to A: talk to his supervisor
    or B: escalate the problem.
Trust what "System Profiler" tells you, not what "Software Update" tells you.
You DO need to resolve this update.
    * backup your data
    * repartition the HD using GUID
    * reinstall MacOS
    * install all updates
    * restore your data

  • Can I suppress the "You are about to update x rows" messages?

When I execute code like the following, I get a message each time of the type "You are about to xxxxx <x> rows".  And I have to click OK.  Can I suppress that?
    ls_sql = "Update tblClasses set [total_points] = 0 WHERE [Class_Code] = '" & cboClass_Code & "'"
Also, is there a way to cut from my code and paste it into one of these posts?  I always have to type it fresh, which is error-prone.
    TIA

I'm not having any problem pasting info into a reply here. Shift-Insert or Ctrl-V both work just fine.
"This is a line of text clipped from notepad"
And as to your original question, where are you executing this statement, and how? (and which ver of PB/DB are you using)

When will we see a firmware update for the N86 on Three network? I got it yesterday as an exchange for my N85 and though i like the phone, the phone does freeze and crash on simple things like opening the inbox for messages and loading music.
Checked for updates, there were none, seems to be stuck on v11

That's up to Three. When they approve the update and add their customisations, Nokia will post it.

  • Nokia 5800 Screen Problems After Firmware Update V...

    Hi all,
I have the Nokia 5800 navigation edition. I just updated the firmwareon it from V40. to the latest available 51.2.007. Doing so has turned the phone's screen into a huge mess - the lower half of the screen is all white and the upper half has some weired flickering and the icons(the ones that are visible) are all messed up too and some of them are not responding at all.
Heres what I've done to resolve the problem:
    - remove the battery, memory and sim cards for a few hours.
    - reboot the phone without the memory card(eliminating any corrupt setup files).
    - reinstalled the V51.2.007 update several times using bothe the Ovi Suite and the older Nokia PC Suite updater.
    - tried running the updates on all XP, Vista and Windows 7.
Can you please advise me of any other possible solutions I can try. Is there any way to revert back to the older firmware. The phone was working just fine before the update.
Thank you all for your help.

There is another way to hard reset your phone and it is as follows.
With your phone powered off, press and hold Green  + Red + Camera Keys. Then power on phone using the on/off button whilst keeping the three keys depressed until you see the Nokia Shaking Hands Logo.
Always remember to backup your phone before performing resets as your data may be lost.
This reset will revert the phone to its out of the box state, so it will revert back to the original version of Maps that came with the phone. However, this should be an issue as you can easily redownload and reinstall the latest again.

  • 2 problems i have with my N82 (Firmware Update, As...

I have one N82 mobile and i was not able to update its firmware. Everytime i try to update (with Nokia Software Updater v1.4.23en) from version 10.0.046 to 11.0.117 is telling me "Updating Software Fail". It regognizes my mobile and it has downloaded the update from nokia server, but everytime i have tryed to update it fails and it is asking me to retry. I have checked the FAQs and i am sure that i have a valid SIM card inserted, Power/Internet connection is not lost during update, i have removed and inserted again a fully charged battery, and the Device is in Normal profile. Can anyone help me please?
Another problem i have is that i couldn't find where to go if i want to assign an mp3 as a ringing tone for a specific person. When i go to "Contacts>i select a contact>Ringing Tone" it gives me only 2 options. "Download Sounds" & "Default tone". Wasn't suppose to be another option for assigning your own songs?
Thanks for any possible help you can give me!

    Hi 123musicv
I had similar problems with NSU v1.4.23en which in my situation was only resolved by un-installing all Nokia applications, cleaning up the registry and re-installing NSU.
Incidentally you can install NSU without PC Suite being present and in this case PC Connectivity Solutions is downloaded at the same time.
Happy to have helped forum in a small way with a Support Ratio = 37.0

  • HT3728 I have factory reset and firmware updated my airport extreme, but although it should have dual network capacity, I can now only create a single network.. Suggestions please

I have factory reset the extreme base station and updated firmware, however, now there do not appear to be dual networks. Why is that

Then you may be possibly referring to the Guest Network option?.....which would not be enabled by default when you reset the device back to default settings.
You can use AirPort Utility to enable that function.

  • Nokia 610 any benefit of Firmware Update

I have got a Nokia 610 in my car.
The software rev. of the telefone is V4.50 (15.01.04)
My dealer told me that the actual version is V5.16.
Is there any benefit in updating the firmware?

BTW,  I think this issue may be specific to 480i widescreen material viewed through non-HDMI inputs.    I was in a Best Buy today, and didn't see any difference with this TV versus other TVs with whatever materal was being played back through all the TVs, but I believe this was because they were feeding an actual HD signal (greater than 480 pixels in height) via through the antenna input.
Anyway,  I'm thinking of returning this TV and taking my chances on <gasp> an Insignia 28" class LED backlit TV.  I really think Toshiba is a better brand (or at least was), but this issue of the sides getting slightly cut off (as explained in the original post) is kind of annoying.  It's too bad Toshiba hasn't indicated they will address/fix this issue.

  • Have you heard about the latest addition to our SAP Microsoft Interoperability Suite?

As you have seen from the coverage we did at the Microsoft SharePoint Conference earlier this month we introduced a new interoperability solution with the name Power BI Connectivity to SAP BusinessObjects BI.
This is a great solution that makes it possible for Business users to continue to work in their familiar environment such as Microsoft Excel to
access trusted, enterprise data  through a SAP BusinessObjects universe. Business users can access data coming from a variety of data sources
    including SAP systems.
Read Deepa Sankars great blog on SCN introducing Power BI and "be in the know".
