To plug or not to plug

Hi,
I've had my MBP for a little over three months now and I want to perserve the life of my battery. I had an appointment at the genius bar yesteday and the expert told me that my computer should not be plugged in all the times. He suggested if my computer is fully charged at night that I should just unplug it. Also, if I am not going to use it for prolonged periods of time, I should just use it unplugged. I have heard several different things around here that suggest otherwise. So what is best? Should I keep it plugged in? Should I let it drain naturally?
Thanks in advanced!

I keep my MBP plugged in when near an outlet.  I use it on battery down to 40% at least once a month to exercise the Lithium Ions.
Coconut battery (download from macupdate.com) tells me my 18 month old MBP with 33 cycles has 100% battery capacity.

  • To Plug or not To Plug...that is the question!

Ok...So I spend way to much time behind the wheel. Since there is a limited of number times you can charge/cycle a lithium battery, should I always have my iPhone plugged into the car charger when I'm talking on it??? And, if you can, is it best to completely discharge the battery and then fully re-charge or are you just as well to completely charge a half charged battery, if you have the time. Hope I didn't confuse??
    Thanks!!

Actually Apple recommends "shallow" rather than "deep" charges for lithium ion batteries:

  • Toshiba Qosmio X505 plugged in, not charging message

I have a Toshiba Qosmio X505 that is almost 4 years old and have some power issues.  The battery is drained to about 6% and the battery icon in the tool bar has the plug symbol for a second then it goes away then comes back and goes away.... it keeps flashing like this.  When I move the mouse over the battery icon it says plugged in, not charging.  I have tried every solution I have found on line with no luck.  I have removed the battery and ac charger and then held the power button for 30 seconds, I have cleaned the connections, I have re-installed the battery about 10 times, I have rebooted all to no avail.
When I remove the ac adapter the power light is off and the battery light is orange.  When I remove the battery and plug in the ac adapter the power light is steady red.  As soon as I put the battery in the ac power light begins to blink on and off.  The computer does not power on with the battery removed and the ac adapter plugged in (but I'm not sure if it's supposed to). I will also add that in the last week or so when I power on I would get a black screen saying an NTFS file is bad and the machine wants to do a disk check.  The disk check never runs, even when I try to do it manually.
I have read this could be a motherboard issue, an ac adapter issue, or a battery issue.  I am hopoing a replacement battery fixes the problem.  Before buying a battery I was hoping someone had some info to share.  Thanks

I bought a battery hoping that takes care of the problem.  If that doesn't work I will try a new adapter and if that doesn't work I will probably just remove the hard drive and use it as an external on a new machine.  Seems there really isn't a whole lot of info out there about this problem other than the start button solution.

Place the device in DFU mode and let iTunes restore the device to factory condition.

  • A135-S4527 Battery plugged in, not charging

There are 1000s of posts on the net but no solution is working. I'm summarizing the problem for those who are already frustrated by seeing solutions in the following order and did not work, so please do not provide any solution mentioned below 1. charger/cord/plug/outlet not working 2. battery dated non working 3. battery contacts unclean 4. restart / push power switch for 30 secs etc There are many where any of the above doesn't work as permanent solution. Sometimes it seems as working but it doesnt last for longer. Now stating the problem of mine specifically My battery was gone. I knew that when this started. The issue was, even if the AC Adapter is connected and the battery is ON and detected, it would always say x% remaining (Plugged in, not charging) - where x is < 100% . This message is so frustrating (even now I'm seeing this and I need to post before the battery gets discharged) Why would a AC Adapter not charge when it is connected and battery is charged less than 100%? Even if lets say a battery pack is not holding enough charge, it should attempt to continuously charge if the charge is less than 100% This has started when I upgraded the laptop Toshiba Satellite A135-S4527 to Win 7. I've replaced the battery with a new one and only thing I can charge the battery is shut down and keep the laptop with battery connected with AC Adapter. Since last few days even the red charging LED has stopped showing up. I've found that the problem is related to "Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method battery" Have perfomed all sorts of instructions as given but none works Funniest part is when this message is on and battery is not charging while AC Adapter is connected, it is still drawing power off the battery as the % goes down and it simply knocks off when battery is fully discharged, completely ignoring that the AC Adapter is connected (Yes, it is connected as you can see the icon with the pin) I'd stop here for some advise before this goes off again. Thank you so much for your attention

  • JDI plug-in not showing in NWDS preference

    Hello
I have installed NWDS 7.11 Latest NWDS release and post steps also done.
Help -> Software updates -> Find and Install and Choose Search for updates of the additional installed features.
But JDI (Development Infrastructure) plug-in not showing in preference.
Please let me know how to connect from NWDS to SLD or how to install JDI plug-in?

    Hi,
I assume you refer to perspectives (like webdynpro, development infrastructure, etc) which are not available in your NWDS even after completely updating it via the update site.
If this is the case then check this note which among other also covers what to do if you face the problem of missing perspectives.
please have a look at this note:

  • Migrating PS CS3 to Intel with OS 10.5.6 Plug-ins Not Available

After migrating CS3 to MacBook Pro, 10.5.6, a list of unavailable plug-ins comes up. All except two were PS plug-ins, NOT aftermarket. Sure enough, they don't show up in the filters menu. I don't know where else they are missing. (migrated from Powerbook 10.4.11)
    What is to be done?
    CS3, OS 10.5.6/ MB Pro 2GB ram, 2.4 Ghz

Migrating is never a great idea, but migrating an application originally installed under Tiger on a PowerPC machine to a Mac-Intel box running Leopard goes beyond being a monumentally bad, horrendous idea. It's sheer lunacy!
You need to wipe out that drive, or at least use the Adobe Uninstaller (installed by CS3 in Applications/Utilities/Adobe/ on your old machine), look for, download and run the CS3Clean script, and then install the application from the original media.
Also, realize that any plug-ins that were not written in Universal Binary will NOT run under CS3 on the Mac-Intel machine,
unless you run CS3 under Rosetta software emulation with a corresponding
    massive performance hit.
    Never, ever try
    "migrating" again. :(

  • Lenovo G700 Plugged In Not Charging

My Lenovo G700, which is a week old, is saying that it is "plugged in, not charging". It was working fine until last night when I closed the lid to put it into sleep mode for the first time. I have checked that it is set to maximum battery life and it is still not working. It's stuck on 98%. I am severely disappointed that something like this has happened a week into having my first Lenovo. I hope someone can help me rectify this problem.

    hi Zadeth,
    Welcome to the Forums.
    Can you try to:
    1. Turn off the machine and remove the AC adapter and battery
    2. Hold the power button for 10secs then plug the AC adapter back in.
    3. Turn the computer ON and when it gets to Windows, slide the battery back in place and observe the charge.
Alternatively, try to use the battery charge until it asks you to plug the AC adapter and observe if the charge goes all the way to 100%.
    Let me know your findings
    Regards

  • Lenovo b570e "Plugged In, Not Charging"

Recently Bought the new laptop Lenovo B570e.
Few days back, the battery icon said "Plugged In, Not Charging"
After googling with the issue I found one fix that worked, it is as follows:
    Disconnect AC
    Shutdown
    Remove battery
    Connect AC
    Startup
Under the Batteries category, right-click all of the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listings, and select Uninstall (it’s ok if you only have 1).
    Shutdown
    Disconnect AC
    Insert battery
    Connect AC
    Startup
However, today i experienced the same problem and i went for the same fix as above, but it didnt work...
Please Suggest me a permanent solution for this problem!

    Expand System Devices.
Right-click the “ACPI Fixed Features Button" and select Uninstall.
