To PLUS or to MINUS  or to DVD-RAM that is my ? ? ?

When do i use PLUS and MINUS DVD's ?
Can I use a DVD-RAM in my late 2009 edition iMac (3.06GHz) ?

Plus or Minus can be used interchangeably. DVD-RAM is not supported.
OK thanks for the info and confirmation.
To bad Apple does not install those types of drives that do support DVD-RAM.
I'm lucky here because i do have an external FireWired LG burner that does do DVD-RAM.

  • MINUS R DL DVDS OK?

Here in Japan, DL DVDs for video are much more common in the MINUS R flavor than the PLUS R. I had been under the impression that my early 2008 iMac could only burn PLUS R DL DVDs, but a quick look at my system profiler seems to indicate this is not the case, and MINUS R DL DVDs can also be burned. Does that sound right to you all? Also, I see that Verbatim is popular among you all. Well, Verbatim doesn't seem DVDs in Japan. Their Japanese website does have a link to the Mitsubishi site, where DVDs are sold. I guess one is owned by the other. Any feelings on Mitsubishi DL DVDs? Thanks in advance.

Pad2, the new iPad Supported Video Formats & Movie Formats
    H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;

Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
Here's one way to install. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • Problem: DVD-RAM can no longer be read on MBP C2D

The "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D" in my MacBook Pro C2D is said to have read (but not write) support for DVD-RAM media.
During the first few weeks of its lifetime, reading DVD-RAMs definitely worked. But now, no more, no matter what brand of media I try.
All other types of optical media continue to work as advertised (read and write).
I wonder whether this is a physical defect (but then why doesn't it affect other types of media?) or an issue caused by recent sopftware updates (but when I boot from an external DVD-drive using the very original MacOS DVD with no updates at all, why do I still not get read support on the internal drive?).
AFAIK there has not been any recent firmware update for this model. So what can be the reason? Should I let Apple swap the drive? Has anyone else observed the same issue?

    Hey Grant,
thought you'd like to know my "cleaning the lens with a cloth" worked fine - uh... but for about three days only, then back to the same old, same old.
I'd originally slid a business card covered with a lens cleaning cloth (from my camera bag) to clean the lens, and although the cloth emerged mostly pristine, I figured it must've done the trick as the drive started working again.
So this time, I decided to go in deeper. I actually took the whole drive apart - case off, drive out, drive dismantled - and I had a long look around to see if any parts looked dirty or damaged...
I found just one thing - the small silver rod on which the read/write head travels (the servomechanism that moves up and down the disc radius as it reads/writes) had some 'oily gunk' at the point where the travelling-head's 'sleeve' met it -  when I tried to move the head manually up and down the rod, it sort of staggered along. So I cleaned off the gunk with a cotton bud and then slid the drive-head up and down a few times 'till it seemed to run freely.
Put everything back - and fired up my Mac Pro. And the drive has been 100% fine since then - two whole weeks!
Maybe this time I've cracked it? (for my drive at least)

  • Tecra M7 DVD: CD/DVD RAM drive does not work since installing Vista

I did a clean installation on my Vista Ready new M7. It had XP tablet to begin with and the DVD drive worked fine. Indeed I used it to install Vista (Home Premium).
Now it does not work at all. It spins but does not read. Device Manager tells me device cannot start. Tried to update driver and it told me that it has the most uptodate driver.
Downloaded all the drivers from Tosh download centre for Vista upgrade of M7 (which got bluetooth, screen rotation etc to work fine). But none of the downloads seemed to be a driver for the DVD-Ram drive. Can not find a driver anywhere else (including Panasonic site).
    DVD drive is Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-841s
    Any suggestions?

    Hi
On the Toshiba driver page you can find the DLA for Tecra m7.
Did you try to install the XP DVD-RAM driver from the Toshiba page on the Vista OS?
    Maybe it will works
But listen the CD/DVD drive uses the common Microsoft drivers which are included into Vista or XP.
Therefore an additional driver should be not needed!
    One additional proposal;
Remove the CD/DVD drive from the device manager and reboot the notebook.
After new reboot the OS should install the drive again and should renew the software.
    Other hint:
    - Start the registry
    - Choose the registry key;
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    - In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters and LowerFilters then click Delete.
    - and restart the notebook

I am running windows 7 home premium. My Hp Dvd-Ram Gh80n does not recognize any blu-ray dvds -these are store bought. I have tried several different dvds, & was able to play them on different devices (IE: ps3, laptop, dvd player). If i put in a NON blu-ray I get the dvd info with healthy status.

  • T60 HDD res. partition, USB ports and DVD-RAM drive no longer recognizing data/media!

I have a base installation of the IBM T60.. I made no modifications to the setup or configuration of how the HDD is structured nor have I downloaded and installed any strange drivers... only automatically downloaded drivers from Microsoft update and manually downloaded driver updates from the Lenovo website.
One day everything was working fine.  Next day, my USB devices, reserved partition (can't remember what this is called) and the DVD-RAM drive stopped working but power was still getting to these devices.
My DVD-RAM drive is seen as a DVD-RAM on first bootup.  When I insert a CD or DVD media in the drive, the Explorer tree changes DVD-RAM to CD-ROM in the Explorer (really strange).  It behaves like there is no media in the drive.  Cannot boot with that drive either.
In addition, I have external USB HDD and Flash drives as well.  None of them work on this T60 anymore.
When I plug in an external USB HDD or Flash drive, I get "not formatted" error message and a prompt to format my drives?!
I tested these USB external drives on a desktop machine and verified that they are working 100% fine.  So the problem has something to do with my IBM/Lenovo T60.
It almost seems like something broke on the motherboard perhaps?  I downloaded and installed the latest BIOS updates as well to no avail.  Please help.  Thanks in advance for your time and consideration of this issue.

    Hi John,
Open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM Drives, right click the drive and select Uninstall - when this has completed, restart the notebook and let Windows fully load for a couple of minutes before checking if it's now listed correctly.

  • After upgrading from Win 8 to 8.1 my DVD RAM GT80N SATA Drive is no longer working

After upgrading from Win 8 to 8.1 my  DVD RAM GT80N SATA Drive is no longer recognizing discs. When I first put a disc in the drive runs for a bit and then stops. I've tried updating the driver but it says it has the most current driver. Under manage, it does not show any error codes and it says it is working correctly. I've looked at the regedit and it does not have any of upper and lower filters. I've tried disabling, rebooting, and reenabling. What am I missing? Another issue I've had since upgrading is that my network adapter needs reset several times a day in order to remain connected to wifi.

  • Help! My T61 suddenly no longer recognizes my DVD-RAM drive!

Today I tried to retrieve some photos from a DVD and then a CD placed into my T61s DVD RAM (Mat**bleep**a UJ-852 ATA) ... and the drive was not recognized by the system.  It was not displayed in the "My Computer" listing.  The drive powered up whenever I insert a disk, but nothing else happened.
    The device properties box says:
"This device cannot start. (Code 10)
"Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."
But when I check, the system replies came back that the proper driver was already installed ... and that there was nothing else out there that was a "solution".
What can solve this sudden problem?
    Many thanks,

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thanks!  A variation of the latter seems to have worked and restored the DVD-RAM to proper working order:
    1) Disable drive
    2) Uninstall drive
    3) Remove drive
    4) Shutdown
    5) Restart
    6) Insert drive ... system recognized the drive, loaded the drivers and operation has been normal.
Thanks for the tip. (I had disabled and removed/inserted it before, with no success.  But until reading your note, I did not have a shutdown/restart in between.)

  • DVD-RAM UJ892 driver no longer working

sorry - the DVD brand in my previous post was censored....
The DVD of my T410 has stopped working, and Device Manager now shows the yellow triangle next to its icon("Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)).
I have tried uninstalling it and scanning for hardware changes, which tried to reinstall the driver, but reinstallation failed. Also tried ejecting and reinserting the drive, again with no results. Any idea? The DVD drive was  working fine until recently.

I'm having the same problem ...
I've spent the last two nights searching for a driver ... can't find one anywhere.
What's worse, is the ThinkVantage Toolbox is telling me the DVD was removed on April 23, then added again on April 28. Then removed again on the 29th. Gee, that's great information  ... but completely useless in getting the drive to work again.
Is there a driver for this on this web site?
    It's a Mat**bleep**a DVD-RAM UJ892

  • Why is my macbook DVD player no longer playing commercial DVD's that it used to play perfectly? It reads the disc, but then says not permitted when I hit play. It is much older than 12 months warantee so I hope there is an easy fix?

The macbook reads a disc, and opens up DVD player but then says not permitted when I hit play, or any other button. Sometimes the initial music plays, but the screen remains black and then it all stops. These are shop bought DVD's that have previously worked on here, and work in DVD players, but have suddenly stopped. The computer is much older than the12 months warantee so I hope there is an easy fix? Thankyou!

    Three things you can try:
    1. Clean the superdrive with a proprietory CD/DVD lens cleaner that uses tiny brushes.
    2. Perform an SMC reset:

  • DVD RAM Drive issue

We have a macbook pro with 2 gig of RAM and osx tiger 10.4.8. We have a DVD RAM drive due to the nature of our work. This drive always seemed to take longer to sin up thn other drives but I just assumed this was o.k Now the drive simply spits all DVD types out, but plays CD's just fine which seems odd to us. We would like to know if it could be someting simple before we send it away to apple. Any suggestions please?

From my experience it sounds like you have a faulty drive. Replacement would be the option.
