To Quad or not to Quad??

Hi e'one..
i've got a bit of a dilemma..i need to upgrade from my Pb G4 Ti as am doing a load o wedding photog. at the momment and i will soon need a big mamma to chew all those gbs of pics ( + albums..)as the PB is choking up.
My question is this: should i go for the Power Mac G5 Dual Core Quad that works well with PShop CS2, Bridge, etc (i acknowledge this is the top of the range at the moment, isn't it?) or should i wait till the Quads go Intel (6 months, a year, three weeks,..)
Is there anyone outhere in this sort of akward position..?
TA.

albertino II,
I would definably go for the Quad, AppleCare and about 4-5GB of RAM (Apple's or Crucial.com's if you feel you can install it yourself)
On the Quad, with included Tiger and if you get more RAM, Photoshop CS2 will work directly in RAM, so your hard drive will not be used as a buffer. The performance is outstanding.
However I would get a extra small boot drive and keep my files on the big stock drive. When a large boot drives fill up, it substancially reduces Mac OS X performance. The two drives working together is best.
http://www.barefeats.com/hard33b.html
I wouldn't wait for the Mac Pro's (PowerMac G5 replacement) as there is no Intel Mac based version of Photoshop yet and would likely be a totally new product when it is released many months from now. More $$$.
Also there is a new DVD drive coming out called BlueRay which will of course be in Mac Pro's eventually, Sony is making it and really hasn't ramped up production yet, sometime early next year we should see that. There is also some sort of conflict with the DRM schemes they plan on using with these new machines as well, DRM chip will be needed in a monitor and so forth.
So for what you need right now the Quad and CS2 will do you fine, as you should be able to use most of your PPC based software (some might need a free G5 update from Adobe's website). The Quad will blow you away with it's performance. Also if you like a lot of freedom and control over your hardware, like for copying your own dvd movies and such, the PowerMac G5 is the last non-EFI based Mac. All you need to do is search for Trusted Computing and EFI over at Wikipedia for the gory details.
Then I would wait a few years until this Mac Intel Pro/BlueRay DVD/first issue machine and all new pro software gets worked out to upgrade. That's what I'm doing right now, just waiting.

  • To Quad or Not to Quad.....Opinions Please?

    Hi,
I am still pondering if I should Sell off my G5 (Dual 2.0 with 4 Gigs and a 6800 Ultra) and get the Quad (I thought the Intels would be out). How much of an improvement do you users see (or should I expect given my use)?
I use my G5 pretty much all waking hours, business apps, home video, music mixing, and games (nothing pro level). I need to use VPC-7 for some Windowz only apps. Any thoughts on VPC-7 improving with the quad?
What about the video card options on the quad? I am very happy with the 6800 and wouldn't mind improving on it (but not for 1k+).
Well let me know what you think, everyone keeps saying to await the Intel's but I am always to eager.....lol.

The Quad is definitely going to be a faster machine ... every aspect of it is faster than what you have: 4 cores @ 2.5 GHz/core, faster RAM [533 MHz], PCIe, etc...Additionally, it's the best Mac I've ever used: quiet, stable, powerful and it's a multi-tasking champ. Most of the nagging problems that "plagued" users of previous G5s seem to have been eliminated with the 970 MP PowerMac G5s, so in some respect the machine has been perfected since its 2003 debut. I think it would be a solid upgrade for you; mind you, I came from a PowerBook so I noticed a huge jump in performance. There is also no waiting for universal apps ... some of the big names [e.g. Adobe] are still many months away from releasing universal apps. If you do decide to buy a Quad make sure you get the NVIDIA 7800 GT ... best bang-for-your-buck of the three available graphic cards.
Who knows when Intel PowerMacs will be released ... it could be August ... December... any guess is speculation. The bigger issue is software ... there are very few major apps that will run on an Intel Mac natively: Adobe CS, MS Office etc. so these apps are running in emulation [i.e. Rosetta]. None of the CAD and 3D software I use runs natively on Intel and some of these programs are slow as it is. I personally see no advantage to buying a machine that cannot run major apps natively and will be a Rev A product. The Quad runs everything, is available now, and is highly perfected compared to previous G5 models...
    Whip out your VISA ...

  • 2009 Mac Pro Quad Will Not Boot

    Hi.
I have a 2009 Quad 3.0Ghz Mac Pro that will not boot up.
I went to it this morning and the beach ball was spinning. I could not get it to stop and as a last resort, turned it off. It has been working fine, although
I have noticed a little slow (Could be me, though).
When I tried to reboot it, it tried to start, chime went off, but it stayed on the light grey screen and eventually, it had a folder with a question mark in it
    that blinked.
I disconnected all peripherals, no change.
Tried to boot from the optical drive  with Disk Warrior, no change.
    Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Brian

The Chime is generated in Software when the first part of the Power-On Self Test has passed. If an appropriate source of software can be found, booting is likely.
it had a folder with a question mark in it that blinked.
That says it could not find the last-specified source of software. the drive may be damaged, or it may have forgotten where it should be looking.
Tried to boot from the optical drive  with Disk Warrior, no change.
Next try a 10.6 DVD. "A Mac that cannot boot from an appropriate Installer/Utilities DVD has a Hardware problem".
One of the simplest things it should be able to do is Startup Manager. Hold down the Alt/Option key at startup and it should draw a gray or blue screen and slowly draw an Icon for each potentially-bootbale device (including a bootable DVD, if inserted).

  • T530, HD 4000 and Quad Core: Not Possible?

    Hello,
I'm in the market for a new Thinkpad and it seems on the T530, if you go for a quad core (QM CPUs), you're forced to go with nvidia.
Is is set in stone?  I ask because I couldn't care less about the nvidia gpu on Linux...
If it is, can the GPU be completely disabled in the BIOS?

    JDay wrote:
You get the Nvidia GPU and the HD 4000 (HD 4000 is built into the CPU). It is actually a nice feature to have, especially if you want to use more than 2 monitors at a time. If you only want to use the HD 4000 just select Integrated Graphics in the UEFI firmware (BIOS). I don't think you can upgrade to the quad-core yourself since I am pretty sure you need a different heatsink/fan assembly to prevent overheating. In fact the motherboard may be different as well, which would explain why it is only available with the Nvidia GPU.
The HD4000 should be able to handle enough monitors I can think of.  That said you have a good point about the heatsink/fan assembly.  Looking at the HW Maintenance Manual, it's definitely not the same piece.
Page 92 of T530 Maintenance Manual.
Bottom line is I guess I'll fork the extra money, even if the GPU isn't really of any use.

  • Quad Processor Not Using All Four Procs?

    Hi All,
    I am using a Quad-G5 2.5Ghz with 4.5 GB of DDR2 SDRAM, 10.4.8.
When I do an encoding with Compressor and open up Activity Monitor, the process hovers around 240%. The next highest processes use between 1-5%, and way down below it says about 38-42% of the CPU is idle.
I have similar results doing any processor-intensive function. I understand not ALL programs can take advantage of the processors, but I am 99.99% sure the Apple Final Cut ones can.
Any suggestions to use all the processor power? Doing a PAL->NTSC conversion takes long enough; it's really bad only using 55% of the total CPU power....
    Thanks,
    Jason
    G5 Quad 2.5Ghz, 30inch Cinema HD Display   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

A lot of it depends on the input and output codecs as well. Some are more heavily optimized than others. It also depends on the version of Final Cut Studio you have. The UB version takes better advantage of multiple CPUs than the non-UB version does. So, if you're using Compressor 2.1 or greater, you'll see better performance than if you're using Compressor 2.0.1 or earlier.
For example, encoding a DV movie to MPEG-2 on my Quad will use up to 370% or so with Compressor 2.3. Encoding a movie that uses the Animation codec to MPEG-2 with Compressor 2.3 takes much longer. Granted, the data rate of the Animation codec is much greater than that of the DV codec, but the CPUs are not nearly as well utilized.

  • Why not more quad band phones? Please!

Does anyone know why Nokia doesn't make more quad band handsets?
I live in the Caribbean where Cable and Wireless operates on a pretty useless 850/1800/1900 frequency, so the best suited phones for where I live are really the less feature rich handsets from the United States. (Unless I want to switch networks where I don't get as many privileges.) But I get most of my phones from the UK (cos they're almost always better!) And its a myth that having a tri-band handset will keep you covered. The truth is that you will only get about 70-80% coverage if your handset is relying on the 1900 band, (depending on the network in a country, of course.)
But the choices of quad band handsets from Nokia is really small, like 6270 or N80, but I'd love to have a 6233 be quad band for example.
Does anyone know, is it possible to turn a 900/1800/1900 handset into an 850/1800/1900 one? Is this something a technician could do for you?

An island called Saint Lucia, in the Caribbean, where many of us love Nokia phones (^_^) but are condemned to operate them on an 850/1800/1900 network, if we are brave enough to dare, or unwilling to do the unthinkable and, *shudder*, buy a Motorolla. (Ok, there is a 900/1800/1900 network, but *everyone* I call is on the bad/hopeless 850 one, and you just would not believe how expensive it is to call cross network. Besides, I travel to the UK several times a year, have a contract with voda and get upgraded regularly, and I naturally prefer European handsets cos I have more variety!) ^_~
Please come visit, bearing many feature rich quad band two to three megapixel with flash series 40 high resolution video Nokia phones that aren't necessarily symbian or 3G.
We shall worship you, oh great and mighty Nokia God!!!

  • Mac Pro 2x2.8 quad will not power on unless I unplug, then plug-in power cable, why?

It is a 2x2.8 Quad Intel Mac pro, 8GB Ram, 8800 GT Video Card (running dual monitors), 10.6.8, Dual Internal HD (150/250), Single external HD (1TB), Dual Internal Burners (DVD - Stock/Blu-Ray - Pioneer), no PCIe cards installed.
I installed a brand new power supply thinking that was my issue, but it still does not power on after an extended period (1/2 hour or so) of being shut-off. It also at times will shut itself off after periods of inactivity even though it is set to never go to sleep, nor are the HD's set to sleep when possible.
One clue to give is that it IS set to restart after power failure. So when I go to press the button to turn the puter on and it is non-responsive, I then unplug and plug the power cable back in to the rear of the puter: it automatically starts-up as if there was a power failure.
The other possible clue I have is that my bluray burner is connected via SATA cable to one of the 2 open SATA connectors on the Motherboard. It only has issues when the hard drives ARE set to sleep when possible. When they are awoken, the drive is no longer listed as present. Meaning I cannot open the drive drawer. ;(
I am thoroughly upset about this.

  • PPC G5 quad will not start up after resetting SMU AND PRAM

    Hi folks
I been having issues with my G5,  where it would freeze up unexpectedly and then the fans would come on full tilt.
I received some advice about resetting the SMU and the PRAM.
Now my mac dose not get past the grey screen.  I have to hard drives attaches one has OS 10.4.11 the other has Leopard.
Odd thing about the Pram is I never got the mac to re-chime.
Also I was advised at the apple store to disconnect power for 30 sec and then hold the power button on for 20 sec after the restarting. I heard an odd tone and then the fans came on.
Btw this model does have the SMU button which I pressed when the power was off.
As the unit will not run with the fans removed.
    Any suggestions?
    Much appreciated
12 gig of ram in the 8 slots.  All FireWire , Ethernet  and USB disconnected

There is a battery that makes the PRAM work.  You may need to replace the battery.
You may also need to limit your RAM to two 1 GB modules, making sure they are made for the PowerMac G5 of your machine's age.  Not all 533 MHz PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM. will work with the machine, it has to be specifically made by the age of the Mac model, and Mac model name according to the vendor.  Thus if you have a Quad Core Mac from 2005, that's what you need to buy RAM for.  Do not buy 533 Mhz PC2-4200 RAM just because it says it is that.
http://www.crucial.com/ and http://www.macsales.com/ specify the model and age of Mac in their store.
Others may too, but do not have ValueRAM or non-lifetime warranty RAM.
Lastly, your model may have liquid coolent that has run out or gotten old, making it not boot.  If unsure where it is, ask an authorized service center.  Some have leaks and won't boot at all.

  • Hp Envy Dv7t Quad Edition NOT tested for Windows 10

I have been waiting for 5 days for the windows 10 update, my windows app says notify me when ready, i check tge update history and it has over 10+ failed attempts to install this new operating system.I havnt gotten a notification even tho it has been trying to download but failing. I tried the command prompt trick to force it and i waited 4 hours until it all downloaded. Then it was preparing to install and it failed. I've also checked if it is even compatible as i bought it january 2013 but it had windows 8 at the time. It tells me on the hp site that it hasnt been tested for Windows 10 and that is my theory on why my update has failed constantly. Even the update trouble shooters show the problem and cant fix it. I dont know what to do at this point i know im not going to maually do it using the creation tool. I am hoping i can get answers or get hp to verify my computer so i can finaly upgrade to windows 10 since it has tried to download and now i am in deep teritory of fear ill mess up my computer. If anyone can help get my model verified or give me a logical answer, i will be gratful.

Hi all. First off, I'm on a HP ENVY TouchSmart m6-k015dx Sleekbook, Windows 10. I've had it for two years now. A while back, it fell off of my bed in college but I didn't have any trouble with it until recently.
It took me a while to discover the issue, I thought it was the touch pad because after updating to Windows 10, my buttons on the touch pad will not work. But sometimes when I would adjust my screen, it causes the cursor to move on its own, a bunch of these clear dots show up all down the middle of the screen, and it just clicks and moves things on its own. It's very annoying. The only temporary fix I have found is to use a little pressure onto the touch screen with my hands. It seems to send it back to normal until it acts up again. I'm just wondering, could me dropping it all those months ago be the cause? Should I take it to the shop? It's my school computer so it would have to be either a quick fix over a weekend or something because I need it for school. I've saw others have this same problem and it recommended to download some update, but where I'm windows 10 I can't find it. I just got to thinking that maybe it's where I dropped it a while back. The issue is very annoying and if there's a way to either disable the touch screen or something for Windows 10 to download to maybe try and fix it, that'd be great. It started this over the summer and I'm about to start classes again so I'd hate for this to be an ongoing issue while doing papers and the like.

  • New Mac Pro (quad) does not shut down!

    Hey guys
I've just taken delivery of a new Mac Pro for my home music studio, and have loaded up various software such as Native Instruments Komplete, BFD3, Sympobia etc... and Logic Pro X.
In the last two days, whenever I shut down the Mac Pro, it goes to a grey screen (light grey) with the mouse pointer still visible, and then just freezes and doesn't proceed to power off.
Before I provide further information, does anyone have an idea of what might cause this behavour and anything I should be trying to resolve it?
    Cheers and thanks,
    Mike

    yeloop wrote:

I don't know what might be causing that but one way to find out is to set your Mac to start up and shut down in "verbose mode."
To turn on Verbose booting, at the Terminal type the following:
    sudo nvram boot-args="-v"
Disabling Verbose booting is just as easy:
    sudo nvram boot-args=
You'll see the various steps the Mac runs through to boot and to shut down. When it hangs, you'll be able to see what point it's hanging at.
BTW, did it behave this way before you loaded up all that software?

  • Migrate G5 Quad to new iMac Quad

I just bought a new i7 iMac Quad and am wondering about migrating my files on my old G5 PPC Quad to the new iMac. Does the Migrate program know to not move the old programs that ran on the PPC chips? I was thinking that in order to clean house, I'd just manually move/import my iTunes and iPhoto libraries. I don't really have a bunch of other programs that I run a lot, except WoW. I know in advance that I'll have to download a new program for that. Any ideas or suggestions on what I should do as far as transferring files, programs, settings, etc, when I get the new iMac in a week or so?

See [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Snow Leopard > Installation and Setup+ forum).
Does the Migrate program know to not move the old programs that ran on the PPC chips?
No, it will move them, and most can run under Rosetta. But it won't overlay a new app with an old version.

As den.thed says, use +Setup Assistant.+ That way, you'll have the same configuration, old apps, user accounts, etc. You won't have to set up Mail again, for example, with all the account names, server names, passwords, mailboxes & rules, etc. Ditto your browser and other preferences.
Then if there's stuff you don't want, you can just delete it.

  • Dual Quad 2.26 vs Quad 2.93

Hi all - be greatful if someone could settle something for me.
We want to buy a Mac Pro which is good enough to do Cinema 4D/Photoshop work on (and at a good speed).
I have been advised by an apple store to buy a Mac Pro Quad 2.93 over a Dual Quad 2.26 - does this sound right. In my mind surely 8 cores running at 2.26 will be able to crunch numbers faster than 4 cores at 2.93?? Obviously i'm talking only in the case here of such applications which can take advantage of multi-processors simultaneously such as photoshop and cinema 4D - i understand that an app that can't do this will use only one processor core and so the 2.93 machine will run these apps faster than the 2.26 version. It's more the multi-processor capable apps i'm concentrating on.
    Thanks

Bro I will tell you to get the 2.26*2 8 core. I just returned the 2.93 Quad core. I personally felt that the 8 core was a better machine all around because of the additional cores. Having those additional cores will make you forget about the 2.26 clock speeds. I use it for FC and LGP and I noticed the difference on both machines. I ran the 64bit geekbench scores on both machines and on the 2.93 quad core with 6GB or ram the score came in at 10355 but when I ran the 2*2.26 8 core I got a 13698 with 8GB of ram installed. Remember you can install up to 32GB of ram on the 8 core but only 16GB on the quad core per Apple website and Apple retail store geniuses. Plus if you are trying to future proof yourself the 8 core would be better but either system you can not go wrong!

  • P7N Diamond 9800GX2 Quad SLI additional GPU problem, pls help!

    Hi all,
So I have an interesting dilemma:
I'm running my system with dual watercooled 9800gx2's in Quad SLI (both in blue pciex16 2.0 slots).
The issue is that I cannot install an additional GPU in the white or yellow slots for my touchscreen monitor/additional output.
What happens exactly is that the screen doesn't turn on (in any dvi or hdmi output)/pc doesn't boot up (the output led on the primary gx2 doesn't turn blue as it should).
I'm running the latest nonbeta release bios. I unplug, clear all power, reset cmos, reset all cards, check plugs, etc. when installing the third card.
I've tried both a 8800gt, and a radeon 2400xt I had laying around. I've tried with the gx2's in quad sli, not in quad sli, and not in sli at all (meaning one gx2 became two cards) with the same effect. The 8800gt will only work when one gx2 is installed.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

If you are trying to get 2 x GX2 + 1 x 8800GT or R2400XT, I'm not sure if it is actually capable in terms of SLI.
Don't quote me if I'm wrong, however, in my point of view, GX2 = SLi with 2 Cores back to back, so having 2 GX2s will means Quad SLi already, which is already the maximum of SLi capability. As such, I do not think that you can add 1 more card to run in parallel to the GX2s since SLI is already being maxed out.
I think you should consult nVidia on this as well.

  • Is it true that not one of MSI's P67 Chipset boards supports Quad SLI

I received a message from MSI when I requested a list of LGA 1155 boards that support Quad SLI.  MSI stated that none of their 1155 socket boards support Quad SLI. I specifically bought my board because it was listed as a certified Quad SLI board in an article by Nvidia on "How to build a Quad SLI Rig" using 2 GTX 590s. Just a little disturbing if this is the case since I have been talking for pulling my hair out for 3 weeks and posting questions in this forum so that I could get a Quad SLI option in the Nvidia control panel and asking everyone for help. Just want to clarify that what this MSI employee is telling me is correct and that I would have to get a different CPU if I want to use MSI for Quad SLI or go to another MB Manufacturer (which I don't want to do).
MSI Tech. 02/23/2012 none for 1155 socket.
End User 02/23/2012 I am not asking you for technical support for my current board. I was asking for a recommendation based on my CPU which board is the best MSI makes that will support Quad SLI. MSI Tech. 02/23/2012 this is not the post sale technical support form, please use the proper support form from the following link: http://service.msicomputer.com/msi_user/ts_form.aspx ***this model of the mb only supports SLI, not QUAD SLI: http://us.msi.com/product/mb/P67A-GD65--B3-.html#/?div=Basic

I believe there is a misunderstanding.  MSI seems to have their own terminology in which "2 GTX 590s" are not labeled "Quad-SLI" but actually "nVidia (Dual GPU) ( 2 way SLI)" as opposed to "nVidia (Single GPU) ( 2 way SLI)".
This is the video card test list for your P67 board and if you scroll down you will see what I mean.  A 2x590GTX setup wasn't actually tested, but you can find 2x295GTX and 2x9800GX2 setups in the list:
    http://eu.msi.com/file/test_report/TR1_2313.pdf
In MSI's terms, "Quad SLI" is reserved for setups with four actual cards and from this perspective Quad SLI is not supported on your mainboard model (there are only 2 PCI-E x 16 slots (connected to the CPU's PCI-E interface that will run as x8/x8 as the CPU only provides 16 PCI-E 2.0 lanes).
I hope that clears things up for you.

  • WARNING: DSP 3 NOT supported under Quad-Core G5 Systems!

This is from my posting at the DSP forum and a warning to all...
Alright, are you ready for this one? I just contacted Apple Support about running DSP 3 on my newly purchased Quad-core G5.
Those of us with a Quad-core G5 system are SCREWED when it comes to using DSP 3. The Apple guy told me that DSP 3 is not supported under the Quad systems (because "the Quad systems didn't exist at the time that DSP 3 was around" but wait, didn't DSP 4 come out BEFORE the Quad-core systems, too?). You have to use DSP 4 if you have a Quad-core G5.
I explained my outrage to the guy (very unsympathetic) that Apple does not post this information on their website and does not inform their Apple Store employees about the issue (I had mentioned to several employees of my intentions to run DSP 3 on the system when I was buying it).
The guy said that no one's complaining about this issue because "everyone gets the latest and greatest software to run on the newest machines" and "that's just the nature of technology" Yeah, right. I hate to say it, but I have Windows 98 apps from a single proc that run fine on Windows XP on a dual proc system.
Anyway, spread the word and give Apple some more money by upgrading to DSP 4, so that they can keep nickel and diming us. The guy mentioned that if anyone wants to complain, that they can complain to the Final Cut Pro discussions site since apparently, that's the place where Apple actually reads posts.

    Heya,
Unsupported it may be, but does it run ok? I could
see it having worse performance than on a single-proc
machine, but it shouldn;t have any actual problems.
The guy said that no one's complaining about this
issue because "everyone gets the latest and greatest
software to run on the newest machines" and "that's

wasting it if they do not run applications that are
written to be fully multithreaded, i.e. written with
    the quad in mind.
This is probably especially true on the Apple platform
as the programmers will assume that the user is on
one of the handful of machines available at the time.
Being inherently lazy, no programmer is going to add the
complexity of supporting n threads if only single-proc
machines are being sold [yeah,ok, there were dual-procs,
but that really means a two-thread system, which is
normally the case anyways ... one for GUI and one for
    processing].
to say it, but I have Windows 98 apps from a single
proc that run fine on Windows XP on a dual proc
    system.
Given the nature of Windows 98[/95/ME] and the
applications written for it, I am very frightened
    for your system integrity
