To Quantize Note Lengths...

To make Quantizing Note Lengths more intuitive:
Can anyone recommend a good course in Pascal or Objective-C ?

This isn't a big deal for me since I don't have to quantize note lengths very often and can usually find something else that works, but it would be a nice feature to have included.
I agree with ya. I also see your point about quantizing note endings to snap to the grid. You're right that the shortcut doesn't perform that function. Since I don't worry about my non perfect event endings too much, the few times I do want to change them it's usually to quantize more or less similar notes so I use the shortcut. Outside of that, it may not be as useful.
If you have Cubase already and find it works better for you, then why bother with Logic?
I agree with this too. ET-Cubase is great! Version 5 is very nice and apparently does some things better than Logic 9 can do. I find Logic 9 to be the best overall DAW package in existence for my personal workflow, projects, musical ideas and taste. If Logic is such a hassle for you and Cubase is an apparent godsend I think you know the decision to make.

  • How to quantize note duration?

I’m trying to quantize the duration of midi notes (so that they cut off at grid points). So far I’ve tried this:
    1) I open the matrix edit window.
    2) I’ve quantized the note attacks.
    3) I’ve selected the notes whose duration I want to quantize
    4) I’ve selected “Transform” under the Functions menu and dragged to “Quantize Note Length”
    5) I get a dialogue box that I don’t understand. I’ve tried various settings. Some of them shorten the notes, some lengthen them, but I can’t seem to find a setting that snaps my notes to the grid. (I want to clean up the track so that I can export the midi file to my music printing software.)
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Okay, to summarize
    1) Select the notes whose duration you want to quantize in either the Matrix or List Events window.
    2) Select “Transform” under the Functions menu and drag to “Quantize Note Length”
    3) This opens the Transform window. Under “Operations on Selected Events” select “Quantize” and make the appropriate setting.
(Note that the beat divisions depend upon the grid settings made in the transport window.)
    4) Click on the button at the top of the window marked "Operate Only" and the lengths of the selected notes should now be quantized.

  • Fixed note length in piano roll

Hello ,is there any way to draw notes with a fixed length in the piano roll rather than using the last edited note's length?
In other words,i want the default note length not to automatically change every time i draw/edit a new note (with a different length).
Im quite sure this cannot be done, but i thought i should ask to confirm...
I also feel i want to say my opinion on that, you dont have to read it or answer back to it:
I find this way of editing very confusing and counter creative ,it sure adds extra thinking proccess. While you are drawing notes it
constantly keeps your mind away from your melody line since in every step, you have to stop some milliseconds and think
"which side should i drag to resize now given the new facts left or right?"....
And extra (unnecessary) thinking always acts against creativity.
I think it seems very logical the way i said that and that objectively, irrelevant to any personal preferences, this way of editing
,even if i doesnt annoy everyone ,it is indeed counter creative.
Especcially if one really does a lot of editing rather than recording.
I wish there was an option for that in the preferences, maybe something very simple like a checkbox "Automaticaly define default note" to uncheck.
Im sure it would be only a few hours of programming for the developers to do something like that, but it would be such a saver for people
who edit a lot or for people coming from other DAWS, or for anyone that simply cant get used to it because they feel it anti-intuitive / unatural...
There...i shared my thoughts, at least i feel a better know...!
(However if you read my opinion i d like to hear what other people (that do a lot of editing) feel )

You can use the transform tool but it's "after the fact". Simply rubberband a group of notes to be changed and use the Transform tool under the piano roll's "function" menu. Choose "Fixed Note Length" then set the parameter box to the value you need.
There's also this workaround:  Find a note of the correct length already in the sequence or create temporary notes of the correct length. I'm assuming by "draw" you mean using the pencil tool. Move the pencil over the *center of note with the length you need, left mouse click and hold for a second, until the pencil turns into a hand, you will now have the length set for drawing new notes. The pencil tool is still selected so you don't have any additional selections to make.
Yes, it's a hassle, but once you get used to it you will find it's faster than what you've been doing.
*slight correction: when moving the pencil tool over the *center of a note, it will change into the pointer arrow, left click and hold and it will change into the hand, move the pointer away and it goes back to the pencil.

  • MIDI note length snap

Is there a way to snap all MIDI notes in arrange to the nearest snap position? Or, is there any better way to export Logic MIDI project to Sibelius without having any issues with strange notes (length wise) after importing MIDI file into Sibelius?

  • Note length in Score Editor

This seems like a simple task with a simple solution, but I cannot figure it out.  I am adding notes using the score editor rather than the piano roll and I want to change the rhythm of a certain measure.  For example lets say I have 4 quarter notes in a measure and later on I change my mind and say I want 3 quarter notes and two 8th notes.  Or maybe I want to change the length of a quarter note to a dotted quarter note and then add an 8th note.  Is there an easy way to do this without deleting the entire contents of that measure.  I have tried increasing and decreasing the length/info in the event list, but maybe I am doing it wrong cause nothing changes?  I am new to logic, especially the score editor so any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi
There are a few peculiarities when working in the Score Editor.
First, you should familiarise yourself with the "Interpretation" function. This tries to present 'clean' notation by interpreting the MIDI note events position and length. It will 'round up' the note/rest sizes displayed, without affecting any of the MIDI data. With Interpretation ON, changing the length of the note events in the Event List etc. may well not alter the notation.
Second, you need to consider the Score Quantise function, which again does not alter the MIDI note events. In the Score, quantise merely sets the size of the smallest note or rest that will be displayed.
You can adjust the absolute note length by various means, including:
    Event List
    Event Float
    Score:View;Duration Bars
Event parameters in the Score Inspector
    Switch to the Piano Roll
    etc

  • Note length input to short with octapad??

I am trying to trigger/record percussion parts into logic 9.1.3 via a spd-30 octapad. When I open the piano roll after the take the note lengths are so short it can't trigger the soft synth on playback. (I have been trying to trigger stormdrum 2 through the play 2 engine and virtual drumline through kontakt 4). I have increased the gate time on the octapad to 1 second for input, but no change on logic. Does anyone know how to change the input note length on logic as I am recording? Is there an input filter for this? (I can't find it.) Any help is appreciated. thanks.

it must be something in the octapad because I can't even get the octapad to trigger the soft synth when I am not recording. I tried the low latency setting and no change. I added the roland driver for the mac and no change. I did try it with ultrabeat and it worked so mabye something in the plug in setup sending notes through. I can change the length after the fact but that is very efficent when I am trying to play against another track...;0
Thanks for taking the time to think this one out, it has me baffled.....

  • Changing sustain CC performance into note length?

    Hello all,
I was told there is a way to turn a sustain performance into an extended note in Logic.
If I hold down the sustain pedal and hit a note, release the note, but continue the sustain, Logic can then take the sustain CC and extend the short note I just played into a long note the same length as the sustain?
I'm being overly descriptive because when it was explained here in the studio, it made sense, but I'm not sure how a description over the message board will do.
    Anyone done this?
If so, it seems like a great unknown feature, especially for notation.
    dual 2.5 G5   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

    Hi Mark,
I do this all the time. It's a fantastic feature. Performing the operation will not only change the note lengths to conform to the actual length of the notes but it will remove the "Ped." and "*" from your data.
However, there are two caveats I'd offer:
    1. If you have merged two or more tracks which may have overlapping sustain pedal=on markings, the results of which may look like this in the Score Editor:
Ped. Ped. * Ped. * Ped. * Ped. Ped. *
    _____^_____________________^_____
Here, the "^" indicate duplicate Ped. markings which will NOT be removed automatically by this process. So if you were to play back a track after you perform the operation, you'll hear what you'll think are hung notes. But really it's a case of these pedal markings not being removed (hence, there is CC#64=127 data which don't have corresponding CC#64=0 to release the pedal). When I hear this, a quick parusal of the track in the Score Editor will always reveal these errant "Ped." marks, and I just delete them.
    2. You may find it necessary to perform a "Remove Overlaps" process after you perform the "Sustain Pedal to Note Length" operation. This way, if in your previously merged tracks you had notes which were allowed to overlap by virtue of the sustain pedal, the Note Off from the first instance of the note will not "choke" the Note On from the second instance of the note.
So the only downside to using the Sus-->Note Length function is that you can't get multiple instances of the same note to overlap or pile up on one another. While this is desirable for notation purposes, sometimes it will change the sound of the track so I'll revert to the sustain pedal version for listening purposes but use the non-sustain version for notation.
I have both of these functions assigned to key commands, so my lil' routine is to perform Sus-->Note Length followed immediately by a Remove Overlaps function.

  • Note length/timing correction

When I play some notes using the musical typing keyboard, then open the track editor and view the notation view, I notice the notation view doesn't EXACTLY correspond to the notes I played. For example, I held the note a bit longer or didn't hit it exactly on the down-beat.
Is there any way to play the notes AS SHOWN in notation view? That is, I would like to correct any inaccuracies in tempo or note length.
    Thanks!

    Mikey Mic wrote:
Thanks for the quick reply. What is piano roll view?
the initial view that the track editor displays., if you're in notation view, click the icon with two offset bars next to the note icon.
I guess the enhance timing does part of what I want, but the notes are still dragging on longer than they appear from the notes.
the enhace timing function can alter your live playing too, forcing notes to be "on the money"
still, the bottom line is that musical typing just really doesn't work that well.
MIDIKeys, at least in the past, has worked much better then the built in MT keyboard. you can find a link to it here:

  • Is there a way to quantize the length of the notes?

    Hi there
Logic Studio is really smart. It knows how long I intended a note to be, so even if I hold it down a bit too short or a bit too long it will print me the desired note.
However, if I export this file into a notation program (Finale 07), this program unfortunately recognizes how unprecise I played and will notate exactly what I played (so for example a quarter on beat 4 is porlonged into the next bar by a 16th note... which I really didn't intend).
So far I have adjusted every single note played in Logic before exporting it. But that can't really be it, can it? It's way too time-consuming!
I'm sure there is a easy way to set all more-or-less-quarters to quarters and so on.
Who can help me? I'd really appreciate.
    Thanks a lot from Switzerland.

    Hi Sampleconstruct
So I went into my logic and tried to figure out where I can find the Q-length parameter. Since I have a german version of the program it was kind of tricky. I do find the Q button down where the piano roll ist. But Q-length? You can give me the exact instructions and names in english. I studied music when I still had the english version of the program, so I should be fine with those names. But I just didn't know where to look for the Q-length. Need a very detailled guideline. Thanks for helping out!

  • Possible to show current time during call (not length of call)?

when i am on a call, the lock screen shows the phone number and the length of time i have been on the call.  is it possible to change this, so that the lock screen shows me the current time (like it does when i am not on the phone)?
currently, the only way to bring up the current time is to (1) hit the home button (brings up phone controls), (2) slide to unlock, (3) hit home again (to get to enter passcode screen), and (4) enter passcode to see time in green bar at the top of the screen. it's a cumbersome process.

If I receive a call when locked, after answering, I can see the time in the top status bar...

Nee, helaas. • Logic X equal note length

hello) L9 had a possibility to make length of notes equal by selecting notes and  "sift+alt+pull right corner"& the same for note velocity.
in LX - impossible. do you have guys some shortcut for Logic X??
    cheers

Still works, though the precise workflow for equal length is now: 1. select notes 2. clickdown on any selected note end, 3. press shift-alt, 4. drag. So: click first, then press the modifier key(s).
For equal velocity it you need serious keyboard skills   (the order of steps here is also critical): 1. select notes, 2. press control-command, 3. clickdown on any note. (If you  drag now,  the velocity for all selected notes will change by the same amount until one of them reaches either 1 or 127.) For same velocity values you 4. need to also press  alt and shift, giving you the full modifier key-"chord" 4. Now drag, and all velocities will snap to the same value.

  • Maximum note length?

I have managed to add notes to my Ipod and know how to read them. All good there. But when I wanted to add a text that was longer it only showed the beginning before cutting off.
Is there a length barrier of how long a note can be? If not, then any idea why it's cutting off?

    This article explains.

  • Troubleshoot: tone duration longer than icon in matrix or note length in sc

    Hello,
I'm editing a track in the matrix editor, and, no matter what I do, the tones are being held for a longer duration than I want. In the score they read much shorter, too, than they're being held for. I don't see any pedal markings in the score either.
Any ideas about how to fix this? No other tracks have this problem. I also tried shifting midi instruments from different software.
    Thanks for your help,
    DJ

Here's a little more info on the situation. I figured out how to remove the legato pedal in hyper draw. So I've lost most of the tone problem. The extra weird thing is that when I change duration of the note in the matrix editor and save, the changes are not kept. When I reopen the program, all the durations are what they originally were.
Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

  • IPhone Address Book Notes Length

I use the note section of each address tab to enter additional info for each contact/ company. Some are very long. On the iphone however, it does not display extra long notes, but cuts them off. I can few them if I click Edit, but risk changing something by accident ( and then synching that change by mistake ).
Any tips? I don't want to use yet another application for notes, as they need to be connected to each contact.
    Thanks

No tips. Its just the way it works.
