To ram or not to ram?
I have a 4 year old mac, actually it's my daughters. It is in ggod condtion all around but it is getting slow. Is it worth adding ram to speed it up, or should the money be put toward a new unit. (I hate curbing stuff that works.)
Click on the Apple Menu and select About this Mac, click More Info and copy and paste the system info here. Edit out your serial number and any other identifying info before you hit add reply. Knowing exactly what you have will help a lot.

I just updated my RAM (replaced the two 2 gig cards with two Corsair 8 gig cards) and I keep getting a crash report. I have a 21.5 Inch mid 2010 imac. I also am experiencing slow load times with Photoshop and when I try to open Final Cut it says that quartz extreme is not compatible and that I have no VRAM even though I do.

The recommendation on here, mostly, is to only buy RAM from macsales.com or crucial.com as they guarantee their modules will work and offer a no quibble lifetime guarantee.
I'd put the original RAM back in, return the Corsair chips for a refund and re-order from one of those two companies.

Photoshop cs6 error "Could not complete command because there is not enough memory (RAM)"
Hi, I have a Macbook Pro and the Adobe Creative Suite 6, and all of my other adobe programs run smoothy with the exception of photoshop. For about the past year and a half now, I will very inconsistency receive the error message, "Could not complete ___ command because there is not enough memory (RAM)." Sometimes this problem gets so bad that I am not even able to open my preferences.
My computer seems as though it should have plenty of space to run photoshop, and I have taken my computer to a number of differed tech supports, but they have only been able to temporarily make the problem less severe for short periods until it acts up again and completely prevents me from using Photoshop. I recently updated to Yosemite and deinstalled/reinstalled photoshop, hoping that would fix things, but I still get the message almost any time I try to complete a command.
Your help would be very much appreciated, thank you!

I'm trying to think back through Photoshop versions, but IIRC it became hungry for RAM with CS5, but it might even have been CS4. But certainly from CS5 onwards a 32 bit system was going to be severely compromised with its 3.5Gb RAM limit, of which Photoshop could access only a bit over 2Gb. You might remember the 4Gb switch that let you use a bit more of your 4Gb of installed RAM. That worked OK with XP but was still flakey, and third party plugins used to fall over all the time through lack of RAM — at least Photoshop has a Scratch drive.
So nowadays you can forget trying to use Photoshop on 32bit hardware. You need 64 bit and at least 8Gb RAM. So like I said, the OP needs to look deeper into the 'apparent' over heating issue, and put that other 4Gb back in. I can't even conceive of why a person would cripple their system by removing RAM. _Especially_ when it leaves just 4Gb -

Hi. I recently tried to install some new ram, only to discover I ordered the wrong part. So, I reinstalled the 2 old 512s, only to get nothing. No response. Computer will turn on, but not boot up, and screen remains black. I get 1 pulse (beep), and the sleep light blinks twice, but other than that nothing.
To me it sounds very much like an installation failure (operator error?), yet I have redone this several times with very close attention to detail and still get nothing. Am I missing something?

Message was edited by: mdhughesAs user The Bohemian mentioned to me, you have to be careful when working with RAM. Did you disconnect the AC adapter and the battery when you were working on your RAM? Also, did you make sure to stay grounded (no static charges felt or "seen") when you were working on your PowerBook?
You might have (hopefully not) zapped your RAM modules in the process, rendering them useless, and/or affected your logic board in the process. Though, it seems more likely that the RAM got zapped by static, since you say the computer turns on.
Also, did you put the RAM back in the same order that you did before? Sometimes that matters too. Try reversing the modules. The one you put on the bottom, put on top, and the one on top, put on the bottom. Then reset your PMU or do the PRAM reset thing. See if that works.
Other than that, that's all I know at the moment. Good luck! =) -
Tecra M7 DVD: CD/DVD RAM drive does not work since installing Vista
I did a clean installation on my Vista Ready new M7. It had XP tablet to begin with and the DVD drive worked fine. Indeed I used it to install Vista (Home Premium).
Now it does not work at all. It spins but does not read. Device Manager tells me device cannot start. Tried to update driver and it told me that it has the most uptodate driver.
Downloaded all the drivers from Tosh download centre for Vista upgrade of M7 (which got bluetooth, screen rotation etc to work fine). But none of the downloads seemed to be a driver for the DVD-Ram drive. Can not find a driver anywhere else (including Panasonic site).
DVD drive is Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-841s

On the Toshiba driver page you can find the DLA for Tecra m7.
Did you try to install the XP DVD-RAM driver from the Toshiba page on the Vista OS?
Maybe it will works
But listen the CD/DVD drive uses the common Microsoft drivers which are included into Vista or XP.
Therefore an additional driver should be not needed!
One additional proposal;
Remove the CD/DVD drive from the device manager and reboot the notebook.
After new reboot the OS should install the drive again and should renew the software.
Other hint:
- Start the registry
- Choose the registry key;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
- In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters and LowerFilters then click Delete.

4GB of RAM not recognised - mid 08 MBP
Hi,
I currently have a mid 2008 macbook pro 2.4 Ghz running 10.5. I've recently started using a lot more memory intensive programs so I decided to upgrade from apples 2x 1G sticks for 2x 2G sticks from crucial.
Ive used crucial before with no problems, but after installation my laptop wouldnt start, black screen and unresponsive. Thankfully, i hadnt fried anything, and after a long time switching and mixing apples and crucials memory modules around, i discovered that both of my crucial sticks are working fine, but not together.
My laptop will run:
2x 1G
1G + 2G
2G +1G
but not 2x 2G or 1x 2G.
I personally cant make any sense of this, especially after looking up support articles. Supposedly, my laptop should run the 4G without a problem, and equally, it shouldnt just be unresponsive when it doent like the RAM installed. Powered on with no ram, it does beeps and flashes like it should, but with 4G which seems to pass the POST as there are no beeps, the screen should go grey apparently - and it doesnt.
I dont want to take it to apple just yet as 3rd party hardware is involved, just to turn up for them to tell me the first thing to do is to send the ram back...
Finally, a bit of context - Laptop is out of warranty (believe me, through no fault of my own), has had its Motherboard replaced last month, and also has issues with the backlighting tubes in the screen not warming up correctly. No idea if this could be relevant.

DanOk, I found a lot on crucials support website as well about people experiencing exactly the same problem.
Solution is to return the modules, but specifically ask for a different chip configuration or something to that effect when you ring them for a replacement. However several people have done this and still experienced the same problems.
So, i've decided to keep one module and return the other and go with 3gb and that's working out fine. If I was going to keep this laptop I probably would have went to the hassle of returning both and trying to get 4gb installed but i've had the motherboard replaced yet again so Im considering selling it on anyway. 3rd logic board in as many months

My 790FX-GD70 not setting RAM to correct timing nor voltage from SPED when set to auto. The RAM I have should be 6 6 6 20 @ 1.8V but the motherboard is setting it to 9 9 9 24 @ 1.5 V
The RAM is Crucial 2GB, Ballistix 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-10600 memory BL25664BA1336 • DDR3 PC3-10600 • 6-6-6-20 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1333 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 64 of which i have two of then in the two black slots.
Just to rule out the RAM I also tried a different model of RAM whose timing is 7 7 7 24 @ 1.65 which will not allow to boot to windows unless I adjust the voltage manually to 1.70 (1.65 V will still not boot properly) it sets it also at 9 9 9 24 yet this same sticks of RAM will set correctly in a MSI 770 C45 without any adjustments.
Now i will say in the case of the 790FX-GD70 I require no changes in voltage for it to boot with the 1.8 V RAM just the timings are not as they should be. The 790FX-GD70 is stable as is and I will probably leave it at the auto settings but wondered if anyone else encountered similar issues with this boardLooks like this is a bit of an issue for some other users of your RAM and not necessarily a MSI thing! This user has a ASUS board! Good luck and hope you get it sorted out.
Backround:
I bought some DDR3-1333 ram that was advertised as 6-6-6-20 @ 1.8v and, as expected, running on my board's default 1.5v it was only getting like 9-9-9-24. In fact, @ stock voltage the best I could boot up with (unknown stability) was 9-7-7. In an attempt to get the best (advertised?) performance I went ahead and manually set the timings to 6-6-6-20, left all other timings on auto, and upped the voltage to 1.8v
Boots up fine and appears to be stable. However, I do notice the RAM is fairly warm to the touch whereas @ 1.5v it was pretty benign heat-wise. I tried running 1.785v but 3 out of 4 times it would hang on the windows desktop display. So I bumped it back up to 1.8v and I'll run Memtest 86 or something else later tonight.
My question, being a noob and all...
Is running at 1.8v going to hurt something? (See my setup MB, and CPU stats)
Just to repeat, the box and manufacturer do list it as 1.8v spec. (FYI: BL25664BA1336) -
I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro, I am trying to run MW3 but it will not work without crashing a few minuets into the game. The general specs on my computer are a dual processor 2.53 ghz. 4 gb ram and a NVIDIA geforce 9400 (9600 is the alternate card).
Things to note:
I have been unable to update firmware on this computer for about a year now. Im not sure why.
I am running a bootleg copy of Windows XP on this computer, I would not like to spend $149 to get Windows 7 if possible.

Then, when you get an estimate about how much it would cost to get the machine completely repaired, ask about the Apple flat-rate repair pricing?
It's worth a shot - and with what you may save, you can put in the bank for a new MBP.

I have been observing Firefox using huge amount of RAM when I am on sites that use Java Scripts to rotate images. I have tried a couple of different sites and have monitored the RAM usage. With Java script enabled Firefox 4 continues to grow its RAM usage by about 10MB a minute. I have had the usage hit as high as 1.5GB. As a comparison I have monitored the same sites in Internet explorer and have not seen the same issue. - Just to eliminate a site issue.

Here what really happen when I install the Mozilla Firebox on my La[top you can see the file is there but when I click the program to open its does not shown on the screen but when I check with WTM (Windows Task Manager) its shows that is ON and you can only witness the laptop going very slow and I have to reboot it, and I can not install any other Mozilla :( because of the same problem and all the above.

Its near unupgradability and unreparibility rumors, delayed delivery, and 1st generation hardware issues especially the lack of Optical drive made me reconsider my decision of buying one.
I want to know whether I can go for the top model of Non Retina - 2.6Ghz 8GB RAM 750 GB 1 GB Nvidea as an alternate choice for Retina MBP pro or NOT ?
1.I wanted to buy the Retina Base model. Though it is very recently launched and there is a big risk buying it because they say it is unrepairable and unfixable as 'everything is glued into the motherboard' dialogue scares me. Something goes wrong after purchase and they send it back to US, is what the Apple officials said. Moreover they don’t keep one on a demo at Apple stores in kolkata. I have searched almost everywhere and have been to many resellers in my city but no use.
NOW,I am very sceptical about custom ordering a Macbook 15 non retina with High-Res 1680X1050p from US.I don’t know how much custom duty or expenses I have to pay and is it safe or not. Time is also a factor. Sadly, I have to buy one in Kolkata (my city) it seems.
2. I am opting for Macbook Pro 15,2.6 Ghz,8GB RAM. Buying it for the sole purpose of editing(audio, video, photos).I need something which is fast along with a good screen size. My original decision was to buy the 17inch but after the launch of Retina and the upgraded 15 inch, I am only looking forward to the upgraded models. Many say 13 inch is fast, but it features a dual core with a maximum of 2.9Ghz clockspeed. I on the other hand want a quad core i7 with good upgradability options and a good screen size. The 13 inch may be a favorite for many, but I want nothing less than a 15 inch. One good option I get with non Retina 15 is its upgradability, while many say Retina MBP 15 can be made upgradable in future but that time is yet to come and by the time the whole web becomes ‘retina friendly’ and all applications supporting its 2880X1800 resolution, I may end up waiting only. Yes the picture quality remains unbeatable when compared to Retina Pro and it will always be. Though friends, I am a student, I want something which is fast, can run almost anything and future dependable. Retina Mac book Pro in India is 2799 USD - Base model. If SSD (quite expensive) it will certainly be as fast. One option is to get the smallest HD they have and with the Non Retina you can upgrade the HD to an SSD later or now but save a little money. Check with iFixit or OWC for instructions. HD's do take longer to start up and load, but once open, the processor and video work just the same as on the Retina model. The SSD speed is nice, but really not critical. So you have to wait a minute for your computer to boot up. The other big question is you need to find out if the non-retina model will take 16GB of ram. According to OWC's site, it will, 16GB for 150USD. Once you get programs open and resident in ram, everything will fly.

I want to know about the real performance, potential, pros, cons of Macbook Pro 15 (i7 2.6Ghz 8GB RAM 750 GB 1GB Nvidea graphics).
So my question to you is what is your opinion on the 15 inch non retina ? HOW FAST do you think is the new upgraded 15inch non retina i7-2.6Ghz-8GB-750GB model really is ?I have read on many mac forums and seen on a particular youtube video that 15inch 2.3Ghz model takes an alarming 40 seconds to start because of traditional hard drive ! A normal DELL Inspiron starts at 15 secs max with i3+4 GB RAM and this particularly confuses me about the whole quad core processing and stuff and speed when running applications like C6,FCP,Lightroom etc is to be determined in regard to the model I want to buy.
A. Is it necessary to buy APPLE CARE WARRANTY when buying a laptop from Apple. What are the benefits and how is it different form the normal customer care ?
B. Please enlighten me on some nice headphones from Sennheizer under 90 USD.I am considering Sennheiser HD 439.I am not a bass freak and I want something to use for listening to voice, loud clear. In short, a headphone for all purpose. I heard the HD 449 is not that good compared to HD 439.They say it is Jazz oriented. Another confusion !

Please help me be sure and satisfied am buying my Macbook Pro very soon and I am awaiting your response.Well, are you talking about a 750 Hard Drive or SSD? If SSD (quite expensive) it will certainly be as fast. One option is to get the smallest HD they have and with the Non Retina you can upgrade the HD to an SSD later or now but save a little money. Check with iFixit or OWC for instructions. HD's do take longer to start up and load, but once open, the processor and video work just the same as on the Retina model. The SSD speed is nice, but really not critical. So you have to wait a minute for your computer to boot up. The other big question is you need to find out if the non-retina model will take 16GB of ram. According to OWC's site, it will, 16GB for 150USD. Once you get programs open and resident in ram, everything will fly.

RAM preview audio will not play through bluetooth headphones
I am using bluetooth headphones (Jaybird Freedom Sprint) to try and edit audio/video in after effects. However, when I go to Preferences>Audio Output Mapping and choose "Freedom Sprint" and click OK, close the preference window, and it will automatically go back to the default "Built in Output" when I open it back up. It will only play the sound through the Mac Pro tower I am using. Is there a way to get the headphone option output to stay permanently?? Is there a reason why it is not staying selected? Another thing I forgot to mention is that all other sounds work (like iTunes, volume up/down) through the headphones except for the audio RAM preview in After Effects. How can I disable the audio from playing through the tower? Very frustrating!
BTW - the only time headphones actually work is when they are plugged into the tower. These ones obviously can't be plugged in.

Regardless though, After Effects will not allow me to play the audio output through any other device except for the Mac Pro tower - even playing it through the LCD Cinema Display won't work.

Macbook Air Late 2010 model, 10.6.7, 2.13 4g ram. Trackpad is not working properly and in sometimes not at all. Need suggestions to resolve this issue? I have applied all Mac updates and still having problems with the trackpad.
The machine has a 1 year warranty, book an appointment with your local Apple Store or AASP to have it looked at.
You can try doing a SMC reset however I don't think that is the solution.
SMC RESET
• Shut down the computer.
• Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
• On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-• Option keys and the power button at the same time.
• Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
• Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
• Shut down the computer.
• Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
• Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
• Release the keys. -

Crucial certainly makes great RAM - it's what I use in my machine - and you should visit their website. Just to let you know, though, Crucial ships all over the world and have both UK and EU sites, if that helps.
Your specific model can hold up to 16GB of 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMMs, even though the 'official' Apple spec is for 8 GB. Something to do with a long-ago firmware update.
You may also want to visit OWC - their prices are high but they make excellent RAM as well.

To ram,or not to ram,that is the question.
I have a first edition g5 dual 2.0.Ever since I have had this computer I have had this problem where when booting the computer will freeze at the grey screen at start up.This seems to happen to me when I install ram.I have been through 3 episodes where after installing ram the computer would not boot past the grey screen with the apple logo.I will not document all the episodes,but it happens like this a couple of months back I had 4gigs of ram installed in my machine.I had purchased 6 more 1 gig sticks and was going to attempt to max out the slots.I removed the bottom apple stock 256 ram modules and put in 2 1 gig modules in the place of them.I went to boot the machine I see the apple logo,spinning wheel,the wheel stops,will not boot past grey screen.So I took out the newly added modules and put in 2 different 1gig modules,same brand,grey screen,apple logo,wheel stops spinning,no boot.I put in the 2 original apple modules,now it does not boot with them installed.I take out all the ram except the two stock modules,and disconnect the spare hd.I try to boot everything stock,same thing,stuck at grey screen.I tried to boot the machine the next night,after over half a dozen attempts I was able to fully boot,once I was in I decided to reinstall the the os,10.2.7 that came with the unit.I did a complete reinstall.When I was done I tried to restart the computer,it froze at the grey screen.I have a g5 imac at work,and at home.I used those machines for the next three months,and one day I had a chance to start early with apple tech support and maybe resolve my issue.I had done some rearranging in the other room so I moved the g5 in there.I hooked up my apple 15" cinema display plugged her in and off she went,it booted with no problems!Why?How could this be?So I have been using the unit for the last few months stock configuration,updated 10.2.7 to tiger,currently with updates at 10.5.All I have used the unit for is ripping movies with handbrake,done at least 200.There is only about 1 month left on my warranty,I have been interested in selling or trading the unit before my warranty runs out.Last night I plugged the cables back into my spare hd.zeroed out the data rebooted all was well.I took out the stock ram,install 2gigs of the ram I had tried before,I reboot,apple logo,no spinning wheel,freeze at grey screen.I found this last episode the weirdest with the grey screen on this attempt I did not get the spinning wheel,the wheel did not show.I shut down and installed 2 1gig sticks that originally worked.reboot,grey screen,logo,no wheel,no boot.I reinstalled the original ram,same as above,grey screen.I started up in safe mode.Repaired disk permissions on the maindrive,run mac janitor,run mem test,mem test reported ram to be ok.I reboot,full start up!What is the deal here!Where do I go from here.On one occasion I called tech support they told me to system diagnostics disk,have done this twice in the past,system passed all test.The way the system sits now its fine,i'm affraid who ever I sold it to would install ram and go through the same ordeal.And I do not want that.I have thought of trying to do the ram install again,then If it freezes boot into safe mode,repair permissions,run mac janitor,run mem test and see if I can get it to work that way.Should I try to run the diagnostics to see if the system passes all the test?My unit is also eligible for a power supply replacement,should I call and have that done and mention these problems?I am all ears.I am open to all suggestions.If you read this far then god bless you!Sorry for such a winded post it could have been longer.
