To read the Dictionary.app dictionary (+)

How to do it? I'd like to make a program that will read the standard Mac OS X dictionaries (from Dictionary.app) but cannot find any API doing this.
Could you, pls, tell me how can I read compiled dictionary?

The iPhone doesn't already have that? That is surprising. I would have thought there were 30 different widgets to connect to online dictionaries.
If there aren't any entirely offline dictionaries, you can still write one. You just have to make sure your data is free of copyright restrictions. There are quite a few such dictionary databases available.

  • Unable to read the dictionary of the application or extension...

I had previously installed the HP Color LaserJet 3600 driver from the install CD under Tiger. I recently did an archive and install of Leopard, then ran all the system updates. (Currently at 10.5.5)
When I insert the 3600 CD, though, I get a bunch of jibberish (parts of images, etc.) and a MAC OS X directory. The installer inside that directory attempts to be opened with Script Editor, though, and gives an error: "Unable to read the dictionary of the application or extension because it is not scriptable." followed by "The document 'HP Color LaserJet v5.6.1.069' could not be opened."
Previously this would launch the HP installation program that would install the driver. Now, it's like it's not a recognized program or something. I downloaded the driver from the HP website to try it that way (clj3600MacOSX.dmg) with the same result. The .dmg file opens a disk image with the "HP Color LaserJet v.5.6.1.069" file in it...same result. Cannot open.
I know this program ran fine under Tiger...and a co-worker got it to run after doing an upgrade to Leopard (instead of archive and install.)
When I downloaded the HP 4300 installer dmg, it launches a .mpkg file and Get Info says it's set to open with "Installer (default)". The 3600 file, though is set to open with "Script Editor (default)". I've looked to set it to Installer, but don't know where it is...it's not in Applications or Utilities folder.
I then right clicked on the installer file and selected "Show Package Contents". In the window that was displayed, there was a Contents folder. Inside that folder was a file called "HP Color LaserJet v5.6" with no file extension (Get Info doesn't show an extension either,) but it has a VISE logo. Opening that file launches the VISE installer and performs the setup.
So, by jumping through hoops and getting lucky, I was able to install the driver.
The bigger issue, though, is why the installation CD and/or .dmg file downloaded from HP's website cannot run the installer as usual...why are they set to open with Script Editor as the default application...and how can I fix it so that other disks won't have the same problem?
[I originally posted this in the Printers forum, but it appears it's not a printing problem...it's an OS problem...]

    Installer.app is in /System/Library/CoreServices/

  • I have iPhone 4 with newest update and Mac laptop with Snow Leopard and current version of iTunes. When I hook the phone up via USB, iPhoto pops open and reads the pictures for import, but iTunes doesn't do anything. Not seeing the device as a USB, either

Sorry, thought that was the body of the question, so the title is long. When I plug in my iPhone 4 (newest update) into my Mac laptop (current version of iTunes, Snow Leopard), it does not read the music, apps, etc., or open iTunes at all. It syncs the pictures, but it doesn't not show as a USB device, either. I have gone through the Troubleshooting assistant, restarting both comp and laptop, using different USB ports, etc. If it is of note, when I look at the option to Sync through Wifi on the phone, it says that sync will happen when my computer (by name) is "available." Not sure if this is a phone issue or laptop, leaning towards laptop, since iPhoto syncs. Willing to buy Lion if that will fix the problem! I would appreciate any help that is given.

You have written a very long story, and I admit I have skipped most of it.  But I think the question is you are on iOS 7, and cannot get the latest version of iTunes (11.1.5) on your computer because your OS X is too old.
The fact that you chose not to update your hardware does not mean you could not update your software!
OS X 10.5 is very old (about four years).  iTunes 11.1.5 (current version) requires at least OS X  10.6.8 to run.  Very likely, you could upgrade your computer's software to at least OS X 10.6.8 and then download the current iTunes on it.
    You would start here:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Then you would update the OS X 10.6 to OS X 10.6.8 over the air, then download iTunes (or update to a later OS X, as the current version is 10.9.2).

    The forgotten App:
My question is when will dictionary be a full screen app like iTunes, Safari, Notes, iCal, and etc? It's really needed.
Also, There is no search history in dictionary; I think that would be great since I do research from the app and go from wikipedia to the thesaurus and I would like to record my history of that.

  • Which font does the Dictionary app use?

I've got a new Mac Pro, and the font for the Dictionary app is incorrect - it's a sans serif, and pretty ugly, whereas before it was a much more attractive serif font. I did a clean install, so unless I've got a corrupted font, there's no reason why this should happen. Does anyone know which font the Dictionary app should use?
    Thanks,
    Kirk
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi, Kirk.
On my Mac, the primary font for Dictionary is the Baskerville family of fonts, which are serif fonts. The font itself is the Baskerville.dfont file in the Macintosh HD > LIbrary > Fonts directory. It also employs Helvetica Neue, a sans-serif font, for some elements of definitions.
Dictionary does not have a preference for changing the default font, just the font size. The actual specification of Baskerville is done in the Default.csss file for Dictionary, in the Resources subfolder of the Contents folder of the Dictionary.app bundle (Control-click Dictionary and select "Show Package Contents"). Dictionary is actually a stripped-down Web browser and its documents are formatted in HTML. The Default.css file is the Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) used for formatting the appearance of Dictionary definitions, including the fonts to use by default.
If you don't have the fonts specified in its CSS, it would substitute other fonts.
    Good luck!

  • The Reader Wi-Fi skips pages, appears to be frozen or the dictionary opens while turning pages.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If your Reader™ turns pages by itself, does not respond to touch or opens the dictionary refer to the following information:
Install the latest firmware version (PRS-T1 Only).
If you swipe the screen and hold your finger on the screen, you will turn multiple pages continuously. This is the swipe and hold gesture designed to flip through pages quickly.
If you try to swipe a page and use 2 fingers instead of one, you will activate the Zoom option. If you are unaware that you did this, the reader may appear frozen. However, it is just in Zoom mode. Press the back button to exit Zoom mode.
NOTE: When your Reader Wi-Fi is in Zoom mode, the screen will have a box in the lower-right corner of the screen. The box will appear every time the screen it touched until you exit zoom mode. The box looks this:
If you rest your thumb on the bottom corner of the screen while swiping, you may also activate zoom mode.
If you tap on the screen without swiping or too long before swiping, you may activate a pop-up menu for other options or the dictionary. If this is not intentional, be sure not to tap and hold when swiping.
    NOTES:
You can also use the supplied stylus for more precise touchscreen operation.
Operation with the stylus makes it easier to select small items or specific areas of text.

I have two companies sending me indesign documents. One opens up and the dictionary is set to English. The other file opens at is in Hebrew, Not sure how to fix the Hebrew part and whether or not the fault lies at my end or at the other end

If only the language is Hebrew, you should correct it in the Paragraph and Character Styles.
But in such a case I would expect more problems.
If you are a creative cloud subscriber you should additionally install the InDesign version, English with Hebrew support:
Go to the preferences of you CC.app. It is found behind the Gear Symbols on the top right.
When the preferences open, go to the Apps section.
Change the App Language to English with Hebrew support.
Now you can install it. It will install on the very same place where your InDesign program is found some additional plugins, which will give you access to Hebrew functionality, like RTL text. Otherwise you will inherit in the document (and where you copy and paste it from such a document into another one). But now you can change or repair problems.
Now repeatstep 1 + 2, but you need not to install your own language again. InDesign will now, when started, run in the language of your OS (when you have it installed in that language) but with more functionality to handle problems with Hebrew documents.
The same steps you would have to do with Arabic or Asian documents. These languages will also add more plugins. But keep it limitted to those language you need. I have installed it that way, because I get sometime documen where the text flows the wrong direction or the numbers come up in Farsi digit, not in Arabic digits. For such purposes I need versions in languages I don’t understand myself.

    Hi friends

  • Change the dictionary language??

Hello, I have a mac bookpro! I who come with the dictionary when cowardice, it is my English! how did I do to put it in French? thank you for your reply
Bonjour, j'ai un mac bookpro ! j'ai le dictionaire qui vien avec quand on lachete, mes il est en anglais !! comment je fait pour le mettre en français ?? merci de votre reponse

Dictionary.app is only provided in English and Japanese.  French is not possible unless you can find a French module to add.  Here is some info on that:
    http://m10lmac.blogspot.com/2011/12/more-dictionaries-for-dictionaryapp.html
Dictionary.app has nothing to do with spell checking or autocorrection.  That is determined by system preferences/language & text/text/spelling.

  • I can't get the dictionary to open

When I try to use my dictionary in contribute 4, by the way I

I don't know for sure that you can't run Leopard's version of dictionary in a Tiger system.
But you already know that the easy way - transferring just the app file, does not work. If you wanted to pursue this, I guess you could try further by renaming your Tiger HD>Library>Dictionaries folder as Dictionaries.old, and then copying the Leopard Dictionaries folder into your Tiger HD>Library. You would probably have to deal with permissions issues to do this, since those folders are owned by system
But my own advice is not to try it, and to stay with the Tiger version. I think that trying to run the Leopard version of any Apple app in Tiger is not a good idea in general, is not likely to work in this case, and is not worth the risk of messing up your system.

  • How can I change the language of the dictionary in iPhone's Safari?

    Hello,
I'm from Germany but I use my iPhone 5 in English. Yesterday I was using Safari on the iPhone and wanted to check a word I wasn't familiar with. So I highlighted it, touched "define" - and was surprised to see that I was asked if I wanted to download a dictionary. Okay, so I did. The problem is: It's downloaded the German version. So I can't look-up English words because the dictionary wouldn't recognize them.
    My questions are:
1.) Why does the dictionary use a German base when my iPhone runs completely English?
2.) Is there a way to change that? I haven't found an option to do so in the Settings.
The strange thing is that with the iPhone 4 I've had before this was never an issue: The Phone used English and so did the dictionary.
    Thank you in advance
    Paul

you're not gonna solve that with the language settings ... could be that the dictionary loads the setup language by default, but well here are some simple steps to follow:
1 highlight any word in a text (Safari, Notes anything you want)
    2 tap on "define"
3 now in the dictionary panel, tap manage, and add/remove the language or languages that you need. They will be downloaded or removed as needed.
    you're done.
ps: reading now that you can't find the "define" option ... then no idea, something went wrong with your setup.

  • How to grant corporate accounts access to the Office store to install the Dictionary in Word 2013 (365)

We are currently migrating from Office 2010 MSI to Office 365 (2013) click to run installation deployed with Configuration Manager.  I was curious if there was a way to grant our corporate accounts access to the Office store to pull in the Dictionary
and other tools not baked into Office 2013 (365).
The only way I have been able to do this is to have a separate Microsoft account to install the Dictionary.
    Thanks,
    Brita

    Hi Brita:
With which accounts you set up your Office client, Office 365 subscribe account or your corporation account? Have you set up
directory synchronization for Office 365? Per my experience, if the directory synchronization has been set up, your corporation accounts will be associated with Office, therefore no need extra effort to install apps from Office store,
you can simply insert apps available in Office store to word in your case. If I misunderstood the situation, please let me know, thank you.
For Plan for directory synchronization for Office 365 please refer to

  • Is there a way to set up FF so that you can install a new dictionary and use it in addition to the dictionary you are already using?

I have managed to create a dictionary which contains a list of common chemical names and terms. But to use it you have to select the dictionary as a replacement for your normal language. As the chemical names are used in sentances constructed in a users normal language this is not ideal. Is there a way to install the new dictionary to work in an additive way to your existing dictionary?
