  • 1 Gen and 2nd Gen ATV

I have both of these hooked to one TV and at first two ATV's showed up in iTunes, but now only one shows up and feel it is 1st Gen as it gives me a hard drive space. I have unplugged 2nd Gen twice but nothing shows up? Any suggestions on how to reset or whatever I need to do. Wireless setup with Airport Extreme

ATV2 doest show up in iTunes unless you physically connect it to your computer with a micro USB.

  • 2nd GEN ATV - does it only stream?

I have the first gen ATV -- one of my major complaints is the time that it takes to download a movie from iTunes.  Originally, I thought I would just rent a movie and it would automatically stream within seconds and I'd be good to go (like NetFlix or Optimum) but apparently the movie is downloaded to the ATV which sometimes takes well over an hour.  Even if I can start playing the movie after a few minutes, it will often pause during the movie until the remaining content is downloaded.
Does the 2nd gen act differently?  Is movie content still downloaded from iTunes or is it streamed where I don't have to wait?
Also, my ATV first gen has a 40G drive for storing content locally.  Can I still store local content on the 2nd gen or is there really no need to do that anyway?
    thanks

It works in a similar manner to AppleTV1 so you are unlikely to see any benefit, in fact you will probably get worse performance.
Both devices recieve a stream which is cached locally, but AppleTV2 only has a small amount of solid state memory not a hard drive.
When AppleTv 1 or 2 calculates enough of the stream has arrived to allow uninterrupted playback it will allow you to start and continue to get the rest of the stream while you watch.
If you get interruptions it is likely your internet performance is fluctuating throwing the calculation out.
Apple rentals are fixed size 1-1.5Gb or so for SD, 3-4GB for HD.  Netflix adjusts the quality of the stream to allow slower connections to view more quickly at the expense of quality.
With AppleTV2 if you do something else with the unit whilst waiting for a movie to cache it will often flush the cache requiring the download to restart.  With AppleTV1 it sometimes does the same, but it will not flush the completed 'download' until it expires.

  • Is youTube in HD on 2nd gen aTV?

ive got a 1st gen. talking myself into getting 2nd gen tomorrow. is youtube really in HD?

Like Chenks stated there is no TAG displayed on the ATV2 to tell you if a video is in HD. There are HD versions of videos but not all of them are. I have a couple of 1080p HD videos in my youtube account that were original 1080p and based on their quality, they do play back in HD 720p on the ATV2.
There is a setting in your yourtube account to always play the HD or highest version available. Im not sure that applies to the ATV2 but since your are signed into you youtube account on the ATV2 its likely it does.

  • Cannot get AirPlay mirroring to work on my up to date iPad 3 and 2nd gen ATV. It does not show up anywhere.

    Hi,
Does anyone know how to solve this issue. I have looked at the support tips on apple, and both devices are fully up to date. However, AirPlay does not show up anywhere on my iPad, and there does not seem to be any way of connecting it to my apple tv. Both are running on the same wifi network. AirPlay is turned on  in the ATV. Am I missing something?
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    Cheers.

How old is your WiFi router and are you connected to "N" WiFi? It seems to make all the difference. On your MBA, click the WiFi icon while holding down the option key. Does it say you are connected to 802.11n?

  • Homesharing turns off after 1 song or movie (2nd gen ATV)

I'm wondering if anyone knows how to fix a problem I'm having with homesharing and my apple tv. It connects fine, and will play exactly one song or movie/tv show, and then stops because it is no longer connected to homesharing. My cousin and I live in the same building and use the same internet provider, but she doesn't have the same problems with her ATV. We do have different routers, in case that makes a difference (although I'm still able to connect to the internet and turn on homesharing again, so I don't think that my internet is the problem). Can anyone help?

I had exactly the same issue when accessing my iTunes library saved on my remote computer from Apple TV.
My remote computer connects to a dual band ASUS router via Wi-Fi. Apple TV is connected to my router via Ethernet cable.
Another computer directly connected to the same router via Ethernet cable plays just fine without disconnecting home sharing after one song (then iTunes on the remote computer needs to be closed and re-opened in order for homesharing to work again).
After troubleshooting for a long time I've noticed that the AirPlay icon is also not showing on remote computer beside the volume slider
    > it's not an Apple TV issue, must be a router/Wi-Fi issue.
    > In order to check if iTunes is OK on the remote computer I've connected it directly to the router via Ethernet cable and that solved it. Airplay icon showing and no song interuptions.
At the same time I shut down Windows Defender, Router and Windows firewall and assigned a static IP address to my computer and also forwarding ports in my router that iTunes needs.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2463
    I now forward port 3689 and 5353.
Ultimately not 100% what made it work but after half a day playing with it connecting to my router via Ethernet seem to have done the trick.
Later on I've restarted Defender and also both Router and Windows firewall.
All working fine ever since via Wi-Fi and Airplay icon showing as well.

  • 2nd Gen ATV update failed

I clicked software update tonight and it went through Screen 1 of 2 downloading and installing update and then Screen 2 Applying update. But then instead of it's normal restart behavior, it gave me a screen with the iTunes logo and a USB plug logo on it and the light is flashing.
I read in some older posts about needing to plug in a micro-USB cable and connect it directly to my computer. But *** Apple, why not actually supply the cable then.
I've contacted Apple support and am waiting for a call back tomorrow. So if anyone has any other suggestions in the meantime, I'd appreciate it.
Sitting here with my now dead ATV.

I have one remaining Apple TV that I have yet to update. As a result of a large number of threads appearing in a short period of time reporting that the update is no longer available, I tried to update my own and was told it was up to date.
It’s therefore quite possible the update has been temporarily removed and the best advice I can provide is to sit tight and wait.

  • How to reset a iPod shuffle 2nd Gen

How can I reset my 2nd Gen shuffle, as I was out running and it just stopped working.  Thought it was needing charging however, it won't charge at all,,,,,, Dead!!!    Any advice??

A hard reset or a complete reset to factory settings? To do a hard reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
To completely reset the iPod to factory settings, head to Settings -> General -> Reset and tap Erase all Content and Settings.

  • Apple TV (2nd gen) not showing up as a device in iTunes

    Hi all,
I have this problem. The Apple TV (2nd gen) does not show up in iTunes under devices, and I really don't know why.
    Mac OSX 10.6.5
    iTunes 10.1
AppleTV 2nd gen with latest update installed
Network is a WiFi Airport Extreme (Mac and AppleTV are indeed on the same private network)
Airplay works, home sharing works fine. Remote App on iPad and iPhone works.
But the AppleTV is not showing up under devices.
I had a 1st gen AppleTV which I reverted to "factory settings" before unplugging. The 2nd gen ATV had the same name as the 1st gen at the beginning, but I changed it afterwards figuring it might be related.
Under iTunes > preferences I had the AppleTV tab. But I did read somewhere on Apple's site you have to "delete" the AppleTV from the list. So I did, and now the tab cannot be found anymore...
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you in advance.

I seem to recall though that I have seen a screenshot somewhere on the web where iTunes showed the ATV 2nd gen as a device.
Not seen that, but the old ones have a logo that look (to me) like the new one, or at least a small darker grey than they are - they show up nicely in the iPad/iPhone Remote app though
If you are right it would be huge disappointment!
I believe I am correct as I've got new/old AppleTVs connected to 3 Macs and a dual boot Mac Pro currently, and the new unit has never appearede under devices.
.... I really HATE the interface organization right now. Why on planet earth do I have to go under "devices" -> "computer" -> "music" just to play some music?
You, me and many other AppleTV 1 users. I think they'd finally got it right in 3.02 for AppleTV 1 which is a much nicer user interface. Basically now the majority of the top level columns are unused by many people who don't rent but want to playback theit iTunes media.
I firmly believe Apple see this new AppleTV as a relatively cheap accessory for iPads/iPhones/iPods to show video/photos via Airplay on your TV without using a computer.
Secondly it's a vehicle for pushing itunes Store rentals, but for the majority of worldwide users they can only get Movie rentals, and Netflix is of no use bar in a few countries (US/Canada).
I would have much more preferred that a "music" tab (it also applies to all other tabs, movies, tv series and so on) and then just a list of all "home sharing" connected computers from which I could pick the one where the music is stored. Or even, and being Apple it surprises me they didn't implement it, just the list of the available music on my network, with a little tab indicating in which computer it is located.
Yes that would make absolute sense - a dynamic list of available content based on connected libraries that changes as new libraries appeared on/left the local network.
The new menu organisation is quite shoddy to me, ut many users new to AppleTV like it and rave about the devices not knowing what the old one could do - it's a good device don't get me wrong, but I still prefer the older units except for their power consumption and the fact I feel they are more likely to fail due to their high temps and mechanical hard drives.
But here I'm venturing FAR off topic.
    Don't think so, it's a valid comment.

Thank you for your help anyway. I wait for confirmation of somebody else just to make sure...
    Fair enough.

  • 2nd gen A TV I can hear but not see on the TV when trying to stream TV from the iPad2

2nd Gen ATV I can hear but not see on the TV when trying to stream TV from the iPad2

You can look at the ipad under settings, general, about and see if it's 4.3.3.
Or when you connect the ipad to the computer with itunes, it'll tell you on the first tab if you need an update.

  • 2nd Gen Apple Tv

When playing a playlist on Home Sharing, my 2nd Gen ATV plays songs either alphabetically or shuffles them -- it won't play them in the order on my computer. Can this be corrected?

So if the USB port on the device cannot read USB connected devices, what good is it for?
Very little...except unofficial software modifications I suspect.
It's just sad to have an USB port and don't have the ability to connect thing to it...
Same problem with 1st Generation ATV.
With no onboard storage on AppleTV 2 it would be ideal if they enabled this to store your own content locally without having to run iTunes all the time.

  • Just moved lost my remote to Apple TV 2nd gen. Initial set up. Is there anyway to do this using my iPhone Apple Ty remote?

I'm trying to set up my Apple TV and I have lost the primary remote.
Is there anyway to do this with the iPhone Apple remote app

Setup requires the ATV remote for the 2nd Gen ATV.
    Purchase a replacement remote.

  • Apple TV 2nd Gen Screen Saver

Why was the album artwork screen saver removed from the 2nd gen ATV? I liked having that as my screensaver than pictures. Please bring it back in a future software update.

  • Apple TV (2nd Gen) screensaver photo shuffle

Received my 2nd gen ATV yesterday, and successfully setup home sharing with iTunes on my mac, along with photo sharing. I really like the photo screensaver capability of the ATV, and set it up to use my entire iPhoto library with "Floating". However, every time the screensaver starts it shows a bunch of pictures from 10 years ago (the oldest stuff in my iPhoto library). I don't mind seeing these pictures, but I'd prefer to get the photos in random order and not "oldest first". I can't seem to find a "photo shuffle" preference, am I missing something?

    edernest wrote:
Is the the setting your referring to?
yep, but i thought it would randomize the photo selection.
If you've found a way to randomize the order of the photos, can you share where you found that setting?
    unfortunately, i didn't
