To shut down or not

my macpro with 4 hard drives and connected to a 23" cinema display.
i use my computer twice a day, once in the morning for about 2 hours then when I get home from work for another 2 hours. should i leave my computer on? put it to sleep?
just looking for the best option... less wear and tear on my hardware.

Hello again Jeff,
So this shutting down vs. sleep question is clearly not very problematic after all.
- (shutdown) Cold boots are certainly the most demanding task for the whole computer in general
vs.
- (sleep) Idling and gently resting, but for such a long time per 24 hour
won't make any significant difference in the long run.
Now, about this so-called nightly maintenance:
This issue sounds off-topic, but it is not, as the question arises each time along with the shutdown vs. sleep vs. awake question.
Mike B,
You are very late with your KB articles information. It's been over one year now that the new periodic behaviour is known and indeed put back to its benign character, not important issue at all.
You are (were) also wrong about how the periodic tasks used to work, if you think (thought) only one or two times a week was equivalent to catching every night.
You wrote:
"All this does is scare those who are not very computer literate into thinking Macs are too complex when they are the opposite in many ways."
- Indeed Mike, Macs just work, and you don't have to mention the nightly periodic tasks anymore in a "sleep vs. shutdown" thread.
This issue was worth mentioning many years ago when it was a pure Unix issue, far before Mac OS X was completed and enhanced with new versions,
and also
far before this new era of huge hard drives capacities that make the periodic tasks such a non-issue even more.
"a couple of times a week just to make sure the maintenance is caught"
- it wouldn't work that way (I mean in Panther and before, when this question was already overkill but still worth the look):
There are three different maintenance tasks, occuring at three different times and doing three different things.
The "daily" is set to run at 3:15 every morning.
The "weekly" is set to run at 4:30 in the morning on Saturdays. (3:15 since Tiger)
The "monthly" is set to run at 5:30 in the morning on the first day of each month.
If you want all three to run, it's not by leaving your Mac on once or twice a week at random times...
"you should read this [KB article #107388]"
- this article is still useful with Jaguar and with old G3 or small-capacity Macs that run Jaguar or Panther.
It's never been updated, even the latest update date is a lie. See the software it mentions (CronMaster, weRclean): long gone, unavailable even by searching Version Tracker oldies.
"(About OSX 10.4.2 Update) [KB article #301722]"
(here is the text you are referring to:
"This update ensures that periodic background maintenance tasks run as scheduled in launchd.conf.")
- "as scheduled in launchd.conf", yes, since before Tiger (10.4) the periodic tasks were taken care of by cron, not launchd.
What this 10.4.2 update brings, is the fix to one of the two bugs launchd new handling was suffering since 10.4.0.
In 10.4.0 and in 10.4.1 already, launchd does the maintenance, not cron anymore, except that because of a bug there is no chance for the tasks to be automated at all, unless you reboot your Mac every day.
So this is the 10.4.2 fix: not having to reboot every day anymore.
The new launchd handling is meant to precisely not need anymore our Macs to stay awake at night like before:
Maintenance tasks are meant to now run delayed if sleeping at night.
No need to worry anymore, except,
-- there is still one other bug: Tasks will run, sleep or not sleep, right, BUT will be cancelled sometimes if Mac is shutdown AND sleeps a lot during the week.
These details just so you know.
Please run the ls -al /var/log/*.out Terminal command day after day if you are interested and would like to verify my info. Keep track of your sleep times, and do the maths.
Much better, much Mac-friendly, simple and easy way:
- Just don't worry about these periodic maintenance tasks, and run them manually once or twice a month.
Installing Anacron or Macaroni too is overkill. Just use your OnyX or Cocktail or TinkerTool System or your favorite small utility.
Jeff,
in a word, about the nightly automatic maintenance:
It is not at all such an important thing that would have to be mentioned here.
The kind of maintenance it does, anyway, is about taking care of log files and some system database. It has not much to do with Mac OS X performance itself
(all that is taken care of automatically, and all Mac OS X needs is a lot of free HD space and RAM)
--> Sleep settings in Energy Saver,
--> Shut down if Mac left untouched for more than 24 hours.
Enjoy your Mac!
Axl

iPhone is 17 month old and shutting down when not connected to the mac any this I can do about it?
should I bring it to apple ?

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these steps in order until the issue is resolved.
Replacing or even suggesting replacing hardware without doing basic troubleshooting first is not very smart.
If basic troubleshooting does not resolve, take it to Apple for evaluation.  There is no obligation to pay for anything, the evaluation is free.

  • Imac shuts down when not in use

I purchased my 21.5" imac July 9, 2011 with Snow Leopard. No problems for 1 month. Then about August 12th or so, my imac started to mysteriously "shut down" when not in use. I'll be working on it, then get up to go pour myself a cup of coffee or something...then I come back to my computer that has now shut off. It is NOT asleep...it is OFF. So I turn it back on and it is fine. This has happened a few times now within a week. Anyone else have this problem?
By the way, I am now running Lyon, as of August 18th. When the imac shut down, I was usually viewing photos or on the web.
    thanks!

First thing I would try is to reset the SMC, it can help with power related problems. Shut down the Mac and unplug everything including the power. Press and hold down the power button for 10 seconds. Plug in the computer but be careful not to press the power button as you are plugging it in. Wait a few seconds and turn it on. Hopefully it won't happen again. There is always Apple Support. Don't let the problem persist until your free phone tech support has expired (3 months). I would also recommend using the iMac with an UPS, and at the very least, a high quality surge protector.
If you have MS Word or a similar word processor you could try enabling the autosave feature and set it to 1 minute intervals. Keep a document open and if you come back to the computer and it has shut down, you can look at the last time the document was updated and know what time the comptuer turned itself off. It could be useful in diagnosing the problem.

  • My i-Phone has shut down - will not do anything!! What's wrong.

My i-phone has shut down - will not do anything!! What's wrong??

This question really belongs in one of the iPhone forums. https://discussions.apple.com/community/iphone
But... my iPhone acted like this once after I dropped it.
First, make sure the phone has some charge in the battery. Plug it in and let it charge for a while if you haven't already done that.
Then try doing a reset. To reset the phone press both the Home button (on the front of the phone) and the Sleep/Wake button (on the top of the phone) at the same time. Keep both buttons pressed for at least 10 seconds and see if the phone will restart. In my case the reset did the trick.
If that doesn't work you might see if anything else here: http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/phone/#section_1 is useful. If you still have no luck try asking your question again in an iPhone forum above... or visit your local Apple Store.

The problem is your friend's music does not belong to you.  It is owned by your friend.
I'm afraid you cannot do what you are trying to do.  Restoring the iPhone is what you would have to do.
In the future, put your music on the computer and transfer it to the iPhone, not the other way.

  • Why does my 3-year old MBP shut down and not start?

I have a mid-2010 MPB running Mt Lion and it is giving me fits.  It consistently shuts down for no reason.  I have taken it to the Genius bar and been told that I should add additional memory, so I have doubled the RAM with a new unit.  The problem is that did nothing.  I keep having to restart and now it seems not to want to start at all, so I can't do anything or learn anything.  I have the basic MBP but I have 2011 Office for Mac and the other basic apps on board.  Any ideas?

  • In 2 node RAC. After shutting down database not able to connect.

    I have 2 node Oracle 10g RAC (RAC-1 and RAC-2) on Windows 2003 Server.
After shutting down instance on RAC-2
I am not able to connect to database from any node.
    I did this on RAC-2 :
    SQL>shutdown immediate;
         Database went down smoothly.
    SQL>conn sys/oracle@rac as sysdba
    ERROR:
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currnetly know of services requested in connect descriptor.
My first node is running fine but I am not able to connect to database from first node or from client.
    Any suggestion???
    Regards:
    Sushil

One question I want to ask, what should be the Listener Services startup mode in RAC? MANUAL or AUTOMATIC???Ideally, if you are instances and other oracle resources are set to autostart then there is no reason for you to set the listener to MANUAL. You may like to change it to AUTOMATIC so that on reboot it comes up without manual intervention.

  • Ipad will just shut down and not power back on until it is plugged in

Ipad will just shut down and will not reboot until it is plugged in. Any suggestions??

I'm going to guess that your battery isnt just dead?
Have you tried a reset? Hold down the sleep and home keys, past when you see the red power down slider  and until you see the silver apple. Let it reboot and see if that helps.
If it won't hold a charge, make an appointment at your local apple store and have them take a look at it.

  • Shut down or not?

    Hi
Got an early 2008 MAC Pro...is it best to leave the computer on all week, shutting down maybe over the weekend, or is there harm in shutting everything down every night...got about 2 TB worth of hard drives in it. Does it really matter?
    Thanks
    K

Other way around. If you leave it on, and don't put the hard drives to sleep, they keep spinning, which will shorten the life span. Sleeping is fine, as long as you don't sleep with FCP open. I've periodically had issues waking up from sleep and having the project crash and/or become corrupt.
People leave the computers on 24/7 for different reasons. For a company, it's because there are often operations that happen by automation when people are not in house. For personal reasons, either network operations are constantly running, or they just want it to ramp up when they press a button instead of having to wait for a boot every time. But, if you want to leave it on for a time, doing it on the weekend is better, because the CRON cycle does a full routine on Sat morning from 2:30 to 5:30, or something around that.

  • Shuts down when not plugged in

My new (got it in July) MacBook shuts down when it's not plugged in. I usually turn it on and it will last around 2-3 minutes before shutting off completely, then if I try to turn it on it will make the turning on sound and immediately shut down. If I plug it in it will stay on. I looked at downloading OS X 10.4.8 in order to download the suggested firmwire to help with this issue, but will that cause me to lose all of my photos and everything else stored on my computer? Could there be any other solution to my malfunction?
    Thanks for your help!!

    Hi -
When it's plugged in ...does your battery show a charge? Also, if you press the little button on your battery (on the bottom of the macbook) a series of green led's should tell you if you have a charge. just asking this because your macbook may not stay on if your battery is not charging/dead.
Yes, you should also update you system and firmware as well.

  • ITunes freezes when shutting down, playcount not saved

    Okay, hey...
Everytime I shut down my iTunes, it freezes, and this Windows-standard-popup shows and ask me if I want to report the error or just shut down the program. (Sorry this message is different in English, I'm currently on a Danish computer).
So, anyway, after I click "Shut down the program", it closes, so yeah.. problem solved, I thought. But when I start up iTunes again, my play count is not updated. There's this new song, and I've listened to it a gazzilion times, and the play count is XX when I shut down iTunes, but when I start the program again, it's 0. Weird.
And the program still freezes when I shut it down!? EVERYTIME I close it. And the play count is NEVER saved...
    Help...?
    Windows XP

I read in another thread that you needed Quicktime working properly, in order to have iTunes working without any problems.
I just loaded my Quicktime, and it works perfectly. So no problem there.

  • IPhone 3G shuts down when not plugged in

    Hello,
I have had this problem for awhile and now just getting to troubleshoot the issue. Basically the phone appears to take a charge after it's been plugged in to my computer and/or outlet, however when removed it shuts down after 30 seconds or so and I have to reboot. Is this a battery issue or another underlying issue? Can it be fixed? I took the phone to the apple store but they were not any help due to no warranty. Thank you!

My 3G's problems have only gotten worse with each new update. Now I literally can't use it continuously for more than two minutes without a full charge going down to zero. I can basically just call people on my 3G and that's it. I probably need to get a new phone now, but with the iPhone 5 possibly coming out this year I want to see if the iPhone 4 (and iPad 1) will go through the same ordeal with iOS5.
I think Apple just needs to learn how to make their software more scalable and learn to support different versions of their OS simultaneously.
With so many models in use it's almost become the same as their personal computers. They shouldn't continue to just support one updated OS optimized for one specific model. Microsoft continues to update and support Windows at least one generation back from the current version because they know there are people who are going to own these things for four years at a time.

  • Xperia Z1 keeps shutting down does not restarts, and automatically stops and starts charging randomly

My Sony Xperia Z1 keeps shutting down due to high temperature even though its not overheated, or i am not running any app. It does not restarts even after i give it some time to cool down as it soon again displays the same messege (SHUTTING DOWN DUE TO HIGH TEMPERATURE), then when i connect a charger it automatically starts charging and discharging (even though if the charger is connected and ON) the cell phone
I request you to kindly look into the matter, expedite the situation and suggest me any possible solution asap
also i would request you to not to release any OS updates unless they are fully stable and functional, i have bought this device 6 months back and it has already malfunctioned 3 times which is a serious concern. I cannot keep on updating and repairing my cell phone after every month or so which i feel is very irritating.
Please stop treating these devices as developers guinea pigs

I suggest that you try to repair the phone software using PC Companion..
Before repairing your device you may want to backup your information first. Check out this topic for more information on how to.
    How to backup?
If the issue should still remain I think that this needs to be examined and fixed at a repair center. For more information about how to submit your phone for repair and where, contact your local support team.

my battery is 15 months old with 315 cycles, and 4664 mAh capacity. i was about to visit an apple store for a repair and/or new battery, but received a software battery update just this morning, installed it...problem solved. the timing is a bit odd. wonder how many others have experienced this of late.
