To sleep, or turn-off, or leave on, that is the question

A couple years ago I called a local Mac dealer and asked the worth of my G4 iMac for a trade-in. He asked whether I usually turned the G4 off, or put it to sleep, or left it on all the time. I said, I usually left it on (with display turned off), or put it to sleep at night. He said the value was less in that case because the heat stresses in high-powered ICs were more detrimental to the life of the machine than on-off stresses. He said I should always turn the machine off at night.
I'm a retired computer engineer, and the philosophy we had at the time I was working was that the thermal stresses on ICs and solder joints induced by repeated on-off cycles was more harmful than the steady-state stresses of leaving a computer on 24/7.
So, that's my question. What is best for my new iMac for maximum reliability. (Forget about energy consumption for the moment.}
1. What's best for overall reliability - turn the unit off at night, put it to sleep at night, or leave it on (with the display in sleep) - or some variation of these.
2. Is there some magic in the OS that is optimized by one mode over another?
I'm expect there are no comprehensive studies on this subject, but perhaps there are some informed opinions.

For a desktop Mac, I leave it ON all the time using only Display Sleep. I also have the setting for +sleeping hard drives when possible+ enabled, but that does not apply to the internal drive (when used as the startup disk); it keeps spinning. External drives do spin down when not accessed.
I believe leaving it on all the time causes less long-term stress on the hardware, for a Mac that is used every day for at least half the day.
I think the second best approach, and better approach for energy conservation, is to use Computer Sleep. However, it should be used so that when you start using the Mac at the start of the day, your Mac stays ON (with Display Sleep only) for the rest of the day. At the end of the day (when you will not be using it again until the next day), use Computer Sleep.
Periodically, for leaving it on all the time or using sleep, restart the Mac; you can make it weekly if you want a routine, but my iMac is fine for about three weeks. After that, I often notice some oddities with general performance, so I do a restart. I don't think about too much, because there is usually some other reason to do a restart within a three week period.
I think the worst approach, which a lot of people use, is have Energy Saver set to do Computer Sleep after a relatively short inactive period. Then, the Mac is repeatedly powering on and off (sleeping/waking) throughout the day, and that probably puts more stress on the hardware.
For a laptop Mac, they are designed to run off battery power and use sleep to save power (and their hard drives are better suited for that mode). The issues and considerations are not the same.

  • To turn off or leave on, that is the question!

    Hi there,
This is probably a FAQ for most of you, however, I've never asked it before.
What is best (both for the computer and for saving energy); to leave the computer in sleep mode all day until you need it, or to turn it on and off as you need it?
Also, does a FIOS connection have any relevance to the above question?
    Thanks,
    Wayne

Booting up and shutting down puts more stress on a computers components than any other process.
Each time you boot you can send a power surge through your cpu, hd, etc which can cause problems and shorten the life of your computer. It is also the time when most directory problems occur.
A computer running Unix should never need to be rebooted. Of course, at times, this can't be helped but theoretically it should never need rebooting. Some Unix servers have been up and running for over 15 years.
Also, if you choose to leave your Mac on 24/7 it uses very little power over "Sleep" as the HD and fans spin down quickly when not in use and you will use Screen Sleep.
Other advantages of being on 24/7 is there are Periodic scripts (daily, weekly and monthly housekeeping tasks) set to run between 3 - 5 AM. If you shut down your Mac these Periodic scripts will not run so you will need to run them manually. Another big plus is that your Mac is always ready to use at the move of your mouse. How often have you shut down and then remembered you needed to do one more thing?
If you live in an area where power outages are a problem, then shutdown or run a UPS (uninterrupted power supply).
Here is what Apple has to say on the issue. Remember, they must be very careful in their language.

    No.

  • Does turning off energy saver include never letting the display to sleep? A warning alerts me that its life might shorten... Thanks!

Does turning off energy saver include never letting the display to sleep? A warning alerts me that its life might shorten... Thanks!
(I'm doing this for the recalibrating of the battery etc...)

It would shorten it's life if you leave it on year 'round. For the amount of time to calibrate the battery won't hurt it.

  • Backlight goes on when waking from sleep, then turns off.

A little bit of water got into the keyboard of my iBook G4 14" last night. Mopped it up and it was fine for two hours after that. This morning, the backlight will not turn on unless you close the display lid, and it will flash on for a split second, then turn off again, which is different from most questions I see posted here. Of course, I can still see the image on the display by putting it close to light. Suggestions?

    Same issue.
Often my MBP (1.83 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM) will not wake from sleep initially. If I close the cover and wait till the HD goes silent and then reopen, it will wake up. It's interesting though that even while in this condition, if an email comes in, there is a notification chime, so it seems that it is not really sleeping, just that the screen is black.
There is no problem if the computer has been sleeping for some time (more than 5 or 10 minutes) and the mouse is not moved, the power cord or my external mouse has not been connected or disconnected or the machine has not been moved so that the motion detector notices, but if any of those things hav happened, then it is a problem waking up.
I've replaced the RAM twice. At Apple Care's suggestion I did an Archive and Install. They suggested that if that did not work, to do an erase and install and then bring in my programs and data piece by piece. they think that it might have been caused by the initial migration of data from my former computer.
What has Apple Care told you??

  • Which is better for computer and program... sleep or turn off?

When not using, which is better for the program, sleep or turn off the computer and any explanations are welcome...

I advise shutting down rather than sleep. A good shut down often clears up nascent problems, and of course you're saving electricity by not running your machine and also saving those precious MTBF hours on all the mechanical components. Think of the hours it would sleep vs. the number of hours you actually use the machine. Even though sleep consumes less electricity, it still consumes.

  • Sleep vs turn off?

Good evening, when do you turn your ipad into a sleep mode and when do u turn it off? Is it fine to keep it in a sleep mode when using it every day? Should it be tuned off during a night or a day of not using it? This is not clear to me. Thank you for the advice :-)

I only tend to turn mine off completely if I know that I won't be using it for a few days, so I don't turn it off very often. Usually I just put it into sleep mode, though I turn off wifi first - if I had the 3G version then I would turn that off as well.

  • G4 MDD 1.25 does not sleep but turns off instead.

I have a G4 1.25 MDD single running 10.3.9 with 80GB and 20GB HD, 1.5GB RAM which is mated to a 20" Apple cinema monitor.
Both hard drives have been erased and verified using the disk utility from the software install CD and the OSX installed cleanly. I have run the Apple hardware test and all the results are okay.
However, if i try to sleep the computer from the pulldown menu, the computer performs the motions as if it's going to sleep but turns off instead. If i try to sleep it with the power button on the monitor nothing happens. Other than this, the computer is in perfect working order.
Does anyone know what the problem can be??
    Many thanks

    Hi-
Steps to take are replacing the PRAM battery with a new one, followed by a PMU reset:
Resetting Cuda/PMU on Power Mac G5, Power Mac G4, Power Macintosh G3

  • When I click sleep, Imac turns off not just sleep

When I click sleep, Imac turns off not just sleep. Any fix?

    Hi Hank,
    Some things to try...
Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
(SMC reset=  Shut down, disconnect power cord for 10 seconds, reconnect power cord, wait 5 more seconds, turn computer back on)
but it is slightly different:   (PMU REST = Shut computer down, disconnect power cord for 10+ seconds, reconnect power cord WHILE SIMULTANEOOUSLY PRESSING POWER BUTTON, let off power button for a few seconds, then press power button again to restart the mac mini.)
Can also be caused by USB or Firewire devices.

  • HT201412 My ipad does not turn off...i tried pressing the Sleep/Wake button and Home button for 10 secs but no response. Also, the screen is not rotating on portrait or landscape view...any suggestions?

My ipad does not turn off...i tried pressing the slep/wake button and home button for more than 10 secs but nothing hapened. Also, the screen is not rotating on portrait and landscape views...

While this could potentially be a hardwar issue:
Try a rest: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the iPad shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the iPad back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps from the tray before doing the reset.
If the reset doesn't work, you may need to consider restoring the iPad to factory settings

Have you tried a soft-reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

That is so dumb...Apple is the best and most techinological company IN THE WORLD and they don't have the time to invent something like that? HUH? All they are worried about is making the "Worlds best Phone" and they can't take the time out to help their users or anybody that has their products. All they have is "Find mt Iphone" Well they should step up and do something else to help people like me out. Find a way to turn it on and you can find it or find a way to turn it on remotely.
    Thank you for your replys

Do a reset by holding the power and home button until the apple logo appears ignoring the slide to power off (no data loss).

There is no key because that is an important dialog.  Why would you want it to go away?
