To the iWeb Engineers

iWeb is about the only web site building product that really is WYSIWYG. Even in Dreamweaver or GoLive, you have to know coding. iWeb allows someone to only have to focus on the content & design, while not worry about how to make it work. This approach is very Apple. The problem is that iWeb produces pages that are too "heavy", and there are so many limitations in the ability to design. This is ok for the suite that iWeb is a part of (iLife), but imagine how nice it would be for, say, a professional blogger to be able move elements around and than, BAM--instant CSS theme (including sidebars with archives, recent posts, etc).
There is a whole crowd of people that need a more robust version of iWeb; software that has power like Dreamweaver, but without having to worry about coding. This it totally an "Apple job". Perhaps "iWeb Pro". It would be the "Final Cut Pro" version of iWeb. I believe you can accomplish this. And there's a market for it.

  • My hard drive crashed recently and i can no longer see my web site address in the iWeb side bar

I can n o longer see my web site address in the iweb side bar, how can I relocate it so i can edit my website

Let me start with the general advise...
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

I had a drive failure and lost the iWeb file along with other things.
I did manage to save a lot of user file documents but I don't see or

I'm trying to find a way, using version 2.0.4 of iWeb on a different

There are 6 pages of images and text, and it
would be a task for me to recreate the whole thing again. I did

Unfortunately iWeb cannot read or import previously published files, only generate them.  You'll have to recreate your site from scratch.
However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site.

  • I posted this message in the iWeb section and they suggested I try here...

I posted the following message on the iWeb bulletin board, and it was suggested that the error I am getting might be an OS issue instead of an iWeb issue.
    message is as follows:
iWeb will not publish to .Mac. After pressing publish, the program signs into .mac and then proceeds to create the web pages. Once all the pages are created circles form next to their consecutive sites. These usually fill up like a clock showing the site being uploaded. However, for the past few days nothing happens once the circles appear. Then after a few minutes iWeb crashes. Also, during this time my whole computer freezes. iTunes will stop playing until the iWeb crash is complete. This has happened every time I have tried to publish over the past few days. Just last week I was able to publish without any problems.
I think there might be a problem with .mac because I am able to publish to a folder without any problems.
I have repaired permissions over and over again...
The only thing new I added to my mac since my last time I publish something in iWeb was the trial version of File Maker's Bento.
Here is the error message I get from the crash.
    Parent Process: launchd 82
    Date/Time: 2008-01-14 16:57:18.418 -0500
    OS Version: Mac OS X 10.5.1 (9B18)

    Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE at 0x0000000000000000
    Crashed Thread: 14
    --- finished---
Today, safari crashed with the same error message.
I do not think this is not a network connection problem because I tried both at home and at school with the same result. I also remember that I recently installed a security update that was released several months ago. At the time of the release it was close to finals, and I could not risk losing my laptop...
    Thank you in advance!

I was able to get it to work...
After creating a new user account, I moved the domain file over to the new account.
However, I still had the problem where iWeb would crash.
I was able to publish when I moved the previous domain file to another folder and tried with a new site a and domain file.
For me this meant that somehow my old domain file had become corrupt. I was really upset. I had kept a blog regularly for over two years and now everything was lost.
Or was it? Before all this started, after two years of using the same template for creating my blog, I changed everything over to a new theme. Previously I had put a lot of my photos up with iWeb. But, during my conversion I erased those photo pages and decided to go with the new gallery feature. This took my web site from over 400 MB down to a mere 30 MB. It was after this conversion that I started to have problems with iWeb crashing.
(Before I had made conversions to different templates on other web sites I have made using iWeb without a problem. So, I did not have a reason to think that was the cause.)
Anyway, thinking I had lost two years worth of blog entries I was desperate. So, I tried something drastic. I erased the contents of the Web folder on my idisk. And this did the trick. It seems that going from over 400 MB to 30 MB was too much for iWeb to handle at one time. Now that it is a brand new site, it up loads without a problem.
Just in time too. I needed iWeb to get another site up and going!
Before trying to upload I did not have to erase the .plist file or anything to get it to work.
I also did not reinstall iWeb or Mac OS X.
I wish you the VERY best of luck!!
P.S. I did not get an responses here either. However, the people in the iPhoto group were very helpful!

  • Clicking on the iWeb icon does absolutely nothing - cannot get to site

I am not at all sure what just happened! I have been working on an iWeb site for about a week, sometimes publishing it again when a page needed changes.
This time I made a graphic modification to all the pages, and then when I published it, it uploaded the pages (I dont remember getting a dialog box saying that "this may take some time . . . you can continue working but do not quit) - ok - that was some time ago - now when I try to open iWeb (I HATE the fact there is no File:Open item)
it does ABSOLUTEY NOTHING. Where did it disappear to? Can I get it back?
There is nothing there and I dont know anyway to get to it. Is my work gone?
When I click on iWeb, the New Page and New Site are dimmed, This is true for both the icon in the Dock and the iWeb icon in the applications folder. Have not quit (tho not much can be selected in the menus and I see no document.)
In other words, I published a site, and iWeb will not let me edit it.
    Thanks in advance,
    George Bartley

You can get to your site by typing the uRL into your browser. That way you will see if your updates are there before you start trying to get iWeb to work.
The URL will be something like...
    http://web.mac.com/username/SiteName/PageName.html
Make sure you empty the browser cache first.

  • Where can I find the iWeb files?

I just bought a new iMac and gave my wife my "old" G5. A week after the migration of files from the G5 to the iMac 09, we did some work on an iWeb document on the G5 that I want to transfer to the new machine.
Where can I find the iWeb documents/files in the G5? Must be in a library somewhere.
    -Bob

It is the domain.sites file that you are after and this is found at your Home User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites.
Don't make the mistake of going to the System Library or you won't find it - it is in your Home User Library.
Just copy the domain.sites file to the same location on your other Mac and double click it and iWeb will open it.

  • I have created a site with iWeb. I have replaced the iWeb Nav bar with a vertical one I made myself. Problem is, my top button disables itself if it overlaps into the "hidden" nav bar area. I can cmd click and drag it into this area, but then all the rest

I have created a site with iWeb. I have replaced the iWeb Nav bar with a vertical one I made myself. Problem is, my top button disables itself (and the animation doesn't work) if it overlaps into the "hidden" nav bar area (indicated by a blue rectangle). I can cmd click and drag it into this area, but then all the rest of my site is pushed down the page. Don't know what to do about this. I don't know how to bring the rest of the page up without dragging it also into the designated nav bar area. Also, by doing this, is it affecting my site in ant way? see my site here at www.steveburrowsimages.com
The home page is with it all draged into the nav bar area and the about page is with is outside the nav bar area (notice that the top button does not animate or work as a button.
Getting confused here. Anyone got any ideas?

Well, you made a good start with SEO by getting rid of the iWeb default navigation since it doesn't help the spiders and, out there in the real world, there are more people than you would think with javascript turned off in their browsers.
One of the downsides of iWeb is that it doesn't allow for the alt attribute in the img tag. Its well worth adding these to give you extra keywords even if you have captioned all your images. Use iWeb SEO Tool for this...

iWeb, just like most drag and drop software, creates a huge amount of code which causes the pages to load slowly in the browser. Running you files through an optimizer will help to reduce this problem and further reduce the size of image files even beyond the initial optimization you do before loading them into iWeb...

  • How to upload site created with Dreamweaver via FTP to the iWEB server?

    Hi everyone,
I recently created a site on Dreamweaver and want to upload the site, via FTP to the iWEB server. My questions are the following:
    1. What is the FTP host address?
    2. How do I connect to my website via FTP?
Any help on the following questions will be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

Hello Lauretta and welcome to the forum.
You do not connect to iDisk via FTP. iDisk uses WebDAV. Also you do not need to manually upload the published files to iDisk as recommended buy others in this thread. Once the site and server is set up in DW you can publish and upload directly through DW.app Check out this post for more info.

  • How do I add a delete website back in to the iWeb Program?

How do I add a delete website back in to the iWeb program?
I still have the files there are stored on the hard drive.

If you deleted the site in iWeb and saved, then your site is lost.
If you have not made a backup of the Domain.sites file before you deleted the site in iWeb, then you have nothing to fall back on.
There is unfortunately no way of importing an existing site into iWeb - it just doesn't work that way.
Your only option then is to cut and paste existing material from your published site back into iWeb.

Does anyone know where the iWeb data files are located or what they are called?  I can't find them.  I looked in Finder for files named the same as my website, but found nothing.  Any help would be appreciated.

If you erased or replaced your hard drive since iWeb was cancelled, then they are gone. Otherwise, if you have maintained backups then check those.
Usually such files are in the /Home/Library/ folder or a sub-folder.
    Exposing the /Home/Library/ Folder
Pick one of the following methods:
    A. This method will make the folder visible permanently. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following at the command prompt:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
    Press RETURN.
    B. Click on the Desktop, press the OPTION (⌥) button, select Library from the Finder's Go menu.
    C. Select Go To Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste the following in the path field:
    ~/Library
    Press the Go button.

  • How can I stop the iWeb welcome movie from appearing

How can I stop the iWeb welcome movie from appearing every time iWeb starts up?
Oh yes and now that we are talking: when I plug in my ipod, I want iTunes to start, not iPhoto.
    Who knows these tricks?

iPhoto seems to be viewing the iPod as a camera.  Therefore go to iPhoto's General preference pane and select No application in the Connecting camera opens: menu.

  • Does and one know if you can change the navigation menu at the top of the iWeb template pages?

Does and one know if you can change the navigation menu at the top of the iWeb template pages? I need to make the background a little wider.

It depends on which template you use.
You can also hide the default navigation and build your own which allows more freedom of design and is better for search engine optimization...

  • Publishing to server: Where do the iWeb files go inside the server files?

Hi - I've created a 1-page web site called "Chatham" using iWeb, and I'd like to add it as a new page in an old a web site I already own. Here's the URL:
    www.daydreambelievers.net/chatham.html
I used DreamWeaver to upload the iWeb folder into the "htdocs" folder in the server with the rest of the site docs. But as you can see, none of the graphics are loading.
So even though all the files are now on the site server, they're not finding each other or loading correctly. Do I have to put the images and other graphics inside particular folders on my server (like moving the iWeb page images into the general "images" file), or do I keep them together in the folder that iWeb created? Does the iWeb folder go in the "htdocs" folder, or in a different folder, or outside?
Couldn't find any info on this in similar threads, sorry if I missed it. All help appreciated!
    - Andy

    Hi Tom,
Thanks for the quick reply and the info. Unfortunately, it's still not working.
Following your instructions, I deleted all previous versions of the "Chatham" iWeb files (both locally and on the server), created a new "Chatham" folder from iWeb, and used Fetch to upload it onto the site server. This time, instead of showing the page without graphics, I got the "file not found" message indicating it couldn't even find the page.
That brings me back to my original question: exactly where do I put the "Chatham" folder on the server so that the files inside it are recognized by the server, and then the files can find each other and build the page correctly? Should the iWeb folder be placed inside the "htdocs" folder (tried, not working) or by themselves outside all the other folders (tried, not working) or in some new combination in and amongst the folders already there?
That's what's got me stuck, just that issue of putting the iWeb files in the right place on the server so they can find each other and build the page correctly.
Once again, all help appreciated. Thanks

  • Can visitors download full-sized photos without using the iWeb photo page?

Neither the photo page nor album page suits the needs of my site, so here's what I would like to do:
Import my pictures into a blank page. Instruct visitors to right click to save.
Will they be saving a full-size version of the photo? Or will it save a thumbnail?
An alternative is to make the thumbnail itself a link to a page with a larger version of the same photo.
By not using a pre-formatted photo or album page, I do not have access to the iWeb download photo quality selector (it's grayed out in the menu).
    Thanks for your help.
    Greg

The quality that you upload will be the quality that viewers can download.
Here's a way to do it without using a Photo template......

The counters are back now, but hits made during the outage don't seem to have counted (there were no cookies from my iWeb pages at that time). There is more on this on another thread.
By the way, Lorna, I didn't answer your last question to me some time ago - my Japanese is far from fluent, but I get by.
