To those with APOGEE DUET.  Why not use S/PDIF?

I am interested in the best quality recording. My mac pro has S/PDIF which I thought would be ok to use. Is the Apogee Duet better? And why? Or is the S/PDIF as good?
I always thought people got the apogee, because they didn't have any good audio connection like s/pdif

If you're only going to record the Korg, then s/pdif should be fine.
However, if you want to record anything without a digital output (voice, guitars, sleigh bells...etc) you would need to have a front end mixer with digital output otehrwise you would end up using the Mac's analog in which is cr@ppy by any standard. Here is where the Duet comes in, the Mic preamps on the Duet are high end, to purchase a Mixer with a set of mic preamps as good as the Duet's would set you back far more than the cost of the duet, plus the Duet has high impedance inputs for guitar/bass.
Audio interfaces, including the Duet have their purpose, otherwise 90% of the people in this forum wouldn't laying out money for them.

  • Why not use "new" operator  with strings

why we not use new when declaring a String .because in java String are treated as objects. we use new operator for creating an object in java .
and same problem wiht array when we declare array as well as initialize .here we are alse not using new for array
    why

Strings aren't just treated as objects, Strings are Objects.
As for why not using new for Strings, you can, if you want.:
    String str = "this is a string";
    and
    String str = new String("this is a string");
do the same thing (nitty-gritty low level details about literals aside). Use whatever you like, but isn't it simpler not to type new String(...) since you still need to type the actual string?
As for arrays, you can use new:
    int[] ints = new int[10];
    or
    int[] ints = { 0, 1, 2, 3, ..., 9 };
But the difference here is you are creating an empty array in the first one, the second creates and fills the array with the specified values. But which to you often depends on what you are doing.

I also use printed paper labels for my DVD covers
    why not use them?

    Hi
The DVD get's unbalanced = Laser can't read track
DVD are several times more sencitive than CD (not advicable to put lables on them either)
And DVDs/CDs that are unbalanced also give more strain to the player mechanism
    that eventually stops working.

  • Why not use interfaces for constants?

    Hi,
I have been getting conflicting views about why not use interfaces for constants?
Can anyone shed some light on it?
    Piyush

    How so?
If the constants are only used in a single classhow
does it help to put them in a separate structute?
(Ignoring the a type safe enumeration of course.)Well, mainly for readability. Suppose that you have a
web application which has a servlet class
"RedirectServlet", which takes a variable to redirect
to a given JSP file. In the JSP files, you want to
create forms which take this servlet as their action.
You could of course put all these "redirect"
constants in the RedirectServlet itself, but then
it's kind of weird that you have to import a
servlet in your jsp file to include these constants
and to be able to write
    <form action="servlet/RedirectServlet?key=<%=
    RedirectServlet.HOMEPAGE %>> or so.
Instead, you could create an interface called
    "RedirectConstants", and then your servlet
RedirectServlet could implement this interface. Then
your JSP can also access these constants via this
    interface.
But then again, this is merely a matter of style, I
fully agree that there is never a real _need_ to put
constants in a separate structure if they're only used
in a single class. Are you claiming that your example above is a single class?

No. Facetime is exclusive to iOS devices and Macs. There is no android version. You would have to use a 3rd party app/service like Skype.

  • Apogee Duet (1) not working on Mavericks

I had been on Snow Leopard and Duet worked fine. Upgraded to Mavericks, now it does not.
I plug it in initially (after reboot) and sound comes through the Duet. If I touch any volume control, the sound cuts out. In Maestro, the controls are all very finnecky, can't select any options. If I unplug and replug, still no sound comes through. Assuming it's a problem with Maestro compatability, but I've heard that Mavericks isn't really playing nicely with other non-apple hardware either. Suggestions?

Guys see my thread - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5493304
For those of you who are using Apogee Duet (Firewire or USB) and just UPDATED to Maverics - DONT INSTALL NEW APOGEE DRIVERS!
The reason is - once you install new driver, software volume control keys (on your keyboard) wont work! You will have to use DUET's knob which is not always confortable.
There is no fix for this yet and maybe wont be, because of Apogee "great" costumer support - (such problems with DUET first appeared in Lion)
If your drivers from Mountain Lion (or older) works fine, dont update it or reinstall it. You will be unable to install previous version in Mavericks.
If you're the one who installed fresh copy of Mavericks from USB Flash, i dont think there is a way to fix the problem. One thing that i didnt try was using Pacifist to force replace driver files.
    Hope this message was helpful
Seems like this problem appears not only on Duet, but on al Apogee products.. =(

  • FW problem with Apogee Duet, Yamaha monitors, and external FW800 HD...

Recently purchased an Apogee Duet and Logic Express 8. Love it so far but there's a cracking noise coming out of the Yamaha monitors when I turn on the external HD via FW800. The Duet is connected via FW400.
It'll be nice to solve this issue. The digital/cracking noise is annoying. It's almost unworkable. Additionally, I use the external FW800 as my recording drive so it's crucial. I guess the FW bus is overloaded. Is an express/34 card the only option? If so, any recommendations.
Besides this, the Duet sounds awesome w/out the FW800 HD plugged in.
    Thanks, mT.

I'm having the same issue -- lots of crackly digital noise coming through my studio monitors (but not through the headphones). The noise, I find, is particularly loud when the 48v is on. Is that the case with you? I initially discovered the issue while trying to record with an AKG C 451 B condenser. When the mic was getting phantom via the Duet, I was getting digital crackling. However, when I put a preamp between the condenser and the Duet (in this case a UA Solo/610) and had the preamp supply the 48v, the crackling was gone. So: is this an issue with the FW or an issue with the Duet's phantom power?
(I'm using the Duet with Logic Pro 8)

  • Why not use USB 6008?

    Hi,
I have an application that requires me to sample 6 AI channels at 1 kHz.
    Processing every 20 ms.
I also need to output a PWM on 3 channels.
    Normally I'd use PCI-DAQ cards.
    e.g. a PCI-6023E and a PCI 6601 (timer/counter).
    This costs about 700€.
    Why shouldn't I use a NI USB 6008 (145€)
    and two NI 6501 (99€).
Is there a big difference in programming and performance?
    Are those devices all USB-2?
Because If I sample at 10Khz, I do not suppose that all that
data can go over a USB1-bus.
    Thx !

    Hi!
My observation is that a 6008 will work for you if you only need to acquire 6 channels at 1 kHz and you can handle 11 bits of resolution (to use six channels you must be in single ended mode, which losses one bit of resolution on this board). The other possible disadvantage of the 6008 is that you will have to learn to use DAQmx Base, if you haven't done so yet. However, if you are familiar with DAQmx, this should not be too difficult.
As for digital output, using two 6501's may not work for you. They will be software timed digital outputs, where it seems that you were looking for hardware timed outputs before (6601).
Both of these devices are USB 2.0 Full-Speed, which can handle this amount of data.
    Good Luck with your project!

  • Why not use iPhone in car as active noise canceller.

The iPhone uses noise cancellation during conversations. Why not make that available in the car through the car audio to quiet the interior at all times?

I have one of those stereos bought from Ebay, no badge, no name, and with multitude of functions, and a mic attached to my visor. Once it is paired with Iphone, all my music and calls go through the car stereo.
for applications that do not direct Audio through BT such as CoPilot (GPS navigation) I connect the Iphone through headset socket and into the stereo AUX input and works great (all sounds, voice, calls) go through it. One disadvantage of this method is that I can't listen to the radio. Well you cannot have it all. Or perhaps there is a Radio application where it plays in the background while I still use my GPS application.
