To time machine or not to time machine

Hi folks,
I have a 2011 iMac (21.5" /  2.8Ghz i7 / 8GB Ram / 1TB 7200 RPM HDD). I have never done a clean instal of the OS. I am now running Yosemite and she's a bit clunky. Logging in takes about 5 minutes. apps are crashing, sometimes they wont even launch, and lots and lots of beach balls!! Ive decided its finally time to bite the bullet and do a clean install of Yosemite. My question is: how heavily should I use time machine for the resotre? I have around 6 OS's worth of updates and who knows how many in app updates. I don't want to bring along any corrupted bits in apps to the new snappy instal. Would it be wise to go and download all the app installers and do a fresh instal of the apps? Or is a recorvery from time machine just as good? Any thing else I should be thinking of when it comes to documents, files and libraries like iTunes or adobe Lightroom??
I have never needed to use time machine for recovery since I migrated to mac in 2011 when I bought this imac. Last time i did a reformat and install of an OS it was windows XP -which I'm glad to have this problem.
Thanks for the wisdom
Dale

Thanks Drew. I'm in full agreement with you about the clone. It's a good idea for sure.
A)
What I meant by granular is that MA/SA are kind of all or nothing. All apps or no apps. what if I don't want a bunch of apps I have installed because they are no longer useful. Same with User Data and Other Data. For example I have a bunch of gopro videos on my HD from a vacation in my "movies" folder. I've already edited the content and made a video. All I want is the final video. I don't need the 50GB of raw footage sitting on my internal drive. I will keep the Raw on my time machine and now a second copy on my bootable clone. If I use MA/SA I have to take those files in the restore because I do want my other movies. In time machine can't I open "movies" - select all folders except "Costa Rica GoPro"  and click restore?
B)
The question is really geared towards  apps. Is there a benefit to restoring apps by actually downloading new installers via the web/app store. Since those are clean installs too. My concern is that application restores via time machine or MA/SA may have those tiny bits of data that make the software not 100% since some of my apps were installed years ago and have undergone not only OSX updates but their own in app update process (fragmentation) Like firefox for example..... I cant even image how many times it's been updated in the last 4 years. Obviously clicking the apps box is really easy and I'd prefer it.
I may be over thinking it but I really only want to do this once. Since I will be spending a considerably large chunk of time I want the computer to be a efficient as possible.
A)
You can selectively restore from Time Machine as you state (into an brand new user account), but I think you will find that grabbing all the User data & then deleting the stuff you don't want is faster than pecking away and restoring items individually. Are you even aware where all the important files live (calendars, contacts etc). When it comes to Apps do you know where any required support files are stored?
Otherwise you need to dig into the hidden ~/Library for things like keychains, Mail settings, Safari history… not to mention the app DB's like iTunes, iPhoto etc.
B)
All or nothing is how MA works - this is especially true of apps. MA is actually too good at bringing old data over IMO - it brings too much, not too little.
You don't just get the .apps from /Applications. With MA's 'Applications' option you get App support files that may exist in any of the Libraries (Fonts, updaters, plugins, template data – basically all the junk you are running away from).
If you really want to restore a few apps from the TM copy or clone do so (provided these are 'drag installed' apps), but it is far better to get the latest release from the developer's site (not software aggregators). The App store makes it very quick to install your apps too. Apps that use packages may install support files elsewhere, so dragging the app from a backup is not enough to have it all.
Fragmentation in terms of files is not an issue - the OS deals with that itself anyway (defragging files as they are accessed). The actual issue is having too many ancient apps with frameworks, plugins, extensions, system level background jobs and other processes that interfere with the OS.
Clearly it is your own choice, I find it is fastest to clone the important stuff (just user data) then reinstall the handful of important apps. Apps like GrandPrespective or Whatsize make finding & purging large files easy. You may be surprised by how few apps you actually need - keep the machine lean to maximise performance.
If you want to see what is installed take a look at an Etrecheck report, no need to post it unless you want to, but it can indicate what you have laying around on disk.

  • How to confirm that the machine is not a new machine

Under normal circumstances, the FRU components should be the same and the official website. But my T530 keyboard FRU different from the official website, does that mean my machine problem, not a new machine

    Morton,
Since you sent me the same question by PM, I thought I would reply here as well.
The build records indicate your system was manufactured on 3-15-13 and were listed with FRU 42Y0528 however, I do find 04X1240 and it is also a backlit keyboard for T530 ... see the part list here.
It is possible there was a part substitution to an alternate part or later level part available which still scanned in under the original part for some reason during manufacturing.
Warranty started 3-17-2013 and will currently expire 4-30-2016 so it looks like it has an extra 6 weeks added to it to allow for inventory sell through.  I would assume it was sold through a business partner.
I don't see any reason to indicate the system is not new.  When you received it, were the seals on the plastic bags still in place?

  • Time Machine will not backup Time Capsule drive

I was filling up my time capsule so I bought a new 2GB drive for my backups. It is attached as an air disk on the Time Capsule as I also use it to backup other computers in the house.
My problem is that I am now using the HDD in the time capsule for my iTunes and iPhoto library, so that they can also be shared, but they are not being backed up by TM.
I have checked my excluded drives list and the Time Capsule drive isn't in there.
Any ideas/help/advice on how to get the time capsule backed up too?

Sorry, but Time Machine will not backup a network drive (i.e. TC's HDD or any USB HDD attached to the TC). It can backup TO a NAS such as TC or a USB HDD attached to the TC. You can transfer your music to another external HDD that is connected directly to a Leopard-loaded Mac and TM can backup that up to TC/HDD attached to a TC.

  • Time machine can not access time capsule after upgrade from snow leopard to mountain lion

Two days ago I upgraded my 2009 17" MBP from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. That evening my time capsule/time machine combination worked fine and did an incremental backup of about 12 gigabyte. Yesterday - only one day later - the time machine backup did not work anymore.
It appears that the system can not find the time capsule - even though it shows the remaining free space on the time capsule (so it did find it after all).
The message is always the same:
Time Machine can not complete the backup "Time Capsule"
The image of the backup volume "/Volumes/Data/Pauls MacBookPro.sparsebundle" is not accessable (Error -1).
I also can not delete the backup image on the time capsule since it is read-only. And I do not want to format the time caspsule yet since my wife's MBAir is also using the same time casule.
I tried out all kinds of suggestions (hard and soft resetting both the MBP and the TC, entering the password again, setting the TC up again) all to no avail. No backup is possible anymore.

Sounds like you got this message earlier:
If so, see #C13 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Offhand, I don't recall anyone not being able to delete one via the Finder (but most were only backing-up one Mac, so just erased the disk).
You may have to wait for that message to appear again (24 hours later), or you might try holding Alt/Option with the TM icon in the menubar, and select Verify Backups if it will let you.

  • Problem with waveform chart: time scale does not show time correctly

    Hello,
I have some problems with a chart.
I want to display some data and the time between two single data can vary. It is something between 50ms and 500 ms.
    The problems I have:
    1. The time is not shown correctly in the chart (allways 2:00:10 instead of the current time)
    2. the data points in the chart have a distance of 1 s (x-scale). That is not correct.
I have tried several things but I thinkt I am on the wrong track.
    Could you please help me?

I have modifierd the vi again.
    Now it looks much better.
I have a data array and the last 10 seconds of the data are displayed.
The array size is maximum 150 and that is more than I need to display. If new data is inserted, the oldest gets deleted.
I wonder if this style is efficient?
The time is stil not displayed correctly in the graph. Why does it always show 2:00:00 ?

  • Time Machine - can not 'Enter Time Machine'

Back ups seem to prepare and progress and complete successfully and are visible on the TM Drive.
Everything worked fine, and then one day, I can not remember if there was anything I did or installed that may have changed this, as one does not know to check it all the time, other than to see the cool transition...
When I click on 'Enter Time Machine' or on the TM Icon in the dock, The screen flashes once, a window of desktop contacts flashes once, and then finder restarts with nothing having happened. It does not enter the Time Machine GUI.
I have searched high and low on discussions, no-one seems to have encountered this before. What can I do ? Anyone seen this , Any Ideas ?

I don't want to re-install the Mac Os.
you don't want to but you might have to. I've never seen anything like what you describe. you can try reselecting the TM drive in TM preferences and see if that does anything (I expect not). you can also try setting up TM with a different drive and doing a full backup. see if it works there. if it doesn't, I don't see any options besides reinstalling.
P.S. do you have any antivirus software? use Filevault?

  • Time machine does not find time capsule

When trying to perform a backup of my iMac to my Time Capsule using Time Machine it just keep searching for the "Disk".  This, albeit, i have selected it

    The network is having issues..
Need more info, but the first step is a simple reboot of the TC. ie pull out the power .. count to 10.. plug in power.
If that is no good, try a full network restart in correct order.. from off.. restart, modem.. wait 2min.. restart TC.. wait 2min.. restart clients.
If the TC fails to show up in the computer, you will need to give more info.
    What OS?
What modem.. make and model?? How is the TC connected to it?
What mode is the TC in, bridge or router?
If you are using wireless try ethernet.
Especially try doing a full factory reset if none of the above work. Do the setup of the TC and the backup in full network isolation. Just computer and TC with ethernet.

  • Time machine will not restore full machine. Sticks at "Searching for disks"

So, this is what I did. I started with a machine with the main HDD partitioned in two, but I wanted to use Bootcamp wich doesn't like multiple partitions (annoyance #1) so I decided to repartition the disk and reload from my Time Machine backup. So...
Rebooted the machine to the install disk.
Used the disk utility to repartition to a single drive
    Selected restore from Time Machine.
Time Machine backups are visible but it stops at the page "Searching for Disks".
It can't see my newly parititioned hard drive for some reason. I'm currently restoring a new copy of Leopard and I'll see what happens next. If, as I suspect may be the case, that Time Machine is looking for "exactly" the same drives to restore to then this is a "feature" that should be made very clear.
    Any thoughts or information appreciated.

Try reformatting the drive. The partition type should be GUID and the formatting should be Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If that doesn't do the trick try zeroing out the drive using the security button. That will take quite some time but will map out any bad sectors on the disk.
Time Machine will restore to a new hard drive and even to a different Mac.

  • Time Machine can not detect Time Capsule

I have set up time capsule and started the first back up - when I came back there was an error message stating that the backup failed. I then tried to start again but the backup would not begin, I then reset my computer but TM could not detect TC as a backup disk. I have reset TC about 20 times but nothing is working. Can anyone help.

Make sure you have installed the latest Airport Utility from the disc that came with the TC(5.3) and that when you open Airport Utility that it is actually 5.3
Try to also rename the TC to something that doesnt have an apostrophe(if yours does).
    Reboot everything and try again.

  • Tar from disk to time capsule does not preserve times!

    Hello
I have been doing a tar archive with
    tar -c -f file.tar folder
Making it either on the external HFS+ drive connected through FireWire or on my internal drive when I decompress the archive in a local (internal or external drive) the dates are ok.
On the contrary, if I put the file on the time capsule and then I decompress it on the same time capsule drive, the decompressed files do not maintain the modification times ... I am wondering why such behavior ... any idea?
Is there any setting in making or decompressing the tar that forces to be as faithful as possible with the dates?
As it happens only when I decompress on the time capsule I am wondering if it is a time capsule/generic nas drive issue ...
    Thanks
    Roberto
    PS
"cp -p" is not an option for me, as I must move to the time capsule 150 Gb of very small files, which takes forever (ETA 100 days!), as opposed to few tens of hours to move the tar file and decompress it on the time capsule.
    Maybe dd can help?

Hello sowei. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Some DSL ISPs require that you provide credentials (username/password) to access their Internet service. This is done using a service called PPPoE or PPPoA. If your ISP changed their access requirements to either requiring PPPoE or not, this would affect your TC's ability to gain access to their Internet service. I believe the Technician was referring to PPPoE when he/she mentioned "user password."

  • I can not get Time Machine to back up an external WD Passport 2 TB drive!  Has anyone else had this problem?  The drive is new and I was running Snow Leopard and upgraded to Lion and it still won't do it.  Time Machine backs up the internal drive fine.

I bought 2 2TB WD Passport Drives with the intention of housing my iTunes/iPhoto libraries off my older MacBook.  I have successfully transferred the Libraries to one and am using the other one for Time Machine.  In Snow Leopard I could back up my computer to Time Machine no problem but when I did not exclude the iTunes/iPhoto drive the back up fails.  Both drives have been reformatted, permissions repaired and checked in Disk Utility and one was replaced.  I have been to the Genius Bar now 5 times.  I have tried using USB drive and FireWire.  Both drives are recognized and are working properly otherwise regardless how they are connected.  Finally yesterday the Apple store installed Lion to see if that fixed the issue and it did not.  Time Machine successfully backed up a USB Flash drive, and today I will try an older external drive.  Any ideas on what else to try??? Do I have to resort to third party software like Carbon Copy Cloned to get this done?  Any ideas why this wont work?  I am using a FireWire converter but as I said, both drives are working normally otherwise (libraries working, time machine working for the computer's hard drive.  Any ideas would be appreciated!!?

Thanks so much but none of that helped.  It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive.  I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this.  Guess I made my own issue!
