To update a DNG file?????

Lightroom v1.1 has the following in its Help File----
Save metadata changes to the file manually
* Select one or more photos and choose Metadata > Save Metadata To File.
* In Grid view, click the down arrow icon in a thumbnail image to save (update) the metadata in the file.
Note: The Save Metadata To File command does not update metadata in a DNG file. To update a DNG file, choose Metadata > Update DNG Preview & Metadata.
My 1st question is--
If one maintains their photos in DNG format, based on the above statement does it make ANY sense to check the option File->Catalog Settings->Automatically write changes to XMP?
Taken literally, it seems to me that LR DOES NOT write changes (either manually or automatically) to XMP in a DNG file, unless one specifically uses the "Update DNG Preview & Metadata".
My confusion comes from the process in v1.0 for DNG metadata changes. v1 would save metadata, but you needed ACR 4.X to separately update the JPG.
Which leads me to my 2nd question-
Is Adobe using Preview and embedded JPG as the same thing? I'm assuming :) that what's being updated is the embedded JPG in the DNG and perhaps also any preview in the database.
Obviously, any comments would be appreciated.

One or two intermediate versions of LR 3 (perhaps Lr 3.6) set DateTimeDigitized when you gave the Metadata > Edit Capture Time command. But for people managing scans in which the capture time of the original image was different than the scan time, this behavior overwrote their scan times, so Adobe backed out of that change.  Before and since those versions, the Metadata > Edit Capture Time command just changes the EXIF:DateTimeOriginal and related fields in XMP and IPTC.

  • Update old DNG files in LR?

I have some old DNG files converted in LR 1.0. How do I make sure that this files are updated to the latest version of the DNG standard and with the latest improvements and bug fixes for my cameras raw format? Is this handled while I save metadata or do I have to update the DNG file?
Can anybody from Adobe explain why there is hopefully no difference between having a file converted 2 years ago compared to having a nef file and convert it to day with latest version of the DNG converter?

I'm not from Adobe, but IIRC (If I Remember Correctly), you can upgrade the DNGs with the latest version of the DNG converter.

  • DNG Converter converts existing dng files to.....dng!

Today I decided to convert all of the raw files on one hard drive to dng format.   The dng converter has converted about 4,000 of a little over 15,000 raw files so far.  I scrolled through the conversion status list and noticed that the converter is also converting existing dng files into dng files thus creating a duplicate.  Why in the world would a person need, or want to , convert existing dng files to dng files?  I new that I already had some dng files on the hard drive, but I never would have imagined that the converter would include dng files in the list of raw files to convert to dng.
It is not a big deal to find and delete.  All I have to do is do a search for all files that end in _1.dng.  No biggie, but it seems redundant to me to waste time on this conversion.  Is there an option to choose not to convert dng files?  I can not look at the moment because the converter is converting dng files and is busy. LOL.

You still have not provided any documentation to back up your assertion that Adobe makes plain, or even unplain for that matter, that DNG files are going to be included in the conversion process.  I am not asking you to "slavishly go over a variety of documents in order to provide proof", you state as a matter of fact that the documentation exists. Your failure or inability to produce any proof can only be interpreted as meaning that it does not exist.  You are speaking about something that you apparently do not have a clue about.  You only seem to act like you know what you are talking about.   It is pointless to discuss this with you any longer.  I accept the fact that you are not going to be able to provide official Adobe documentation stating that DNG files are going to converted along with camera dependent raw files.  Apparently, you had no prior knowledge of this issue, because you did not share a reason in your post.  And, you still do not share documentation....because you do not have any!  FAIL!
As far as making contributions, just because I have only posted 14 times on this forum is not a clear indicator of my total contributions.  I am not going to get into a "I have made this many posts on this forum and that forum argument" with you.  It is pointless and childish.
And how were you trying to help me?  You were not.  You offered nothing.  Your comment only had one purpose: to make fun of another person and/or to incite a reaction.  You did that very well.  You need to be honest with yourself and think about what kind of contribution you were making in your original post.  You did not offer anything accept for a smartaleck answer.
As far as acknowledging the utility's ability to convert dng files to newer files, yes I knew that the converter could be used to update existing DNG files.  I did not imagine that it would convert an existing dng file and produce a duplicate.  Big difference!
And what is wrong with venting?  I expressed frustration with something that I found bothering.  Adobe would like for everyone to adopt this format.  One way of achieving that goal is for people to use the converter.  But, if people are not happy with the converter, then they may not convert, or recommend the use of the converter.  I use the converter, and I use camera raw to convert to dng as well as converting upon import.
You can not defend yourself on the issue of documentation to back up your claim apparently because it does not exist.
I apologize for referring to you as "Mr. Smartypants".  I can clearly see now that I was wrong for calling you that.
I know that I am guilty here of inserting my own emotion into your original response.  I have a 50% chance that I was correct in assuming that you were simply being humorous and not condescending.  Again, I should have ignored your post as it was completely worthless.  I apologize for that.
And, at the moment, I do not feel very smart for participating in this childish discussion with you.  I am much too old to be doing this.

  • How do I update Date Time Digitized to match an updated Capture Time for a DNG file?

I am updating capture time based on GPS Time (a bit OCD, I know) but when I change Capture Time the Date Time Digitized value does not change. This in in LR 4.3 and is not affected by whether on not the Catalog is set to 'Write date or time changes into proprietary raw files'. Maybe this is a problem for DNG files only.

  • Dng files not viewable in bridge cs4 despite all updated. help?

i have a totally updated version of cs4 incuding camera raw 5.6 and would like to see my dng files in bridge. i can open a dng file from bridge into camera raw but the thumbnail images in bridge won't show the image only an icon.

Try purging the Bridge cache from within Preference

  • My Bridge update 5.2.0.4 has wrecked previews for all DNG files. They appear only sideways and small and I can't open Camera Raw in Bridge. Anyone else have the same problem?

    I updated Bridge yesterday. CS6 5.2.0.4. Mac OS 10.9.5
Now all previews (DNG files) in Bridge appear sideways and only small thumbnail size.
Also Camera Raw has been disabled.
I have tried purging cache for the folders as well as purging entire cache.
I have also spent over an hour on the phone to tech support which mainly involved being switched between departments and trying to understand anyone on the phone.
    Can anyone help?

Your Performance preferences screen capture reveals you have a single hard drive with little available space to accommodate both the Photoshop scratch file and the swap files of the OS.
It's obvious that Bridge finds itself at times with insufficient space to build its cache.
However, it's unclear why that should affect only DNG files and not other type of image files.  Puzzling, unless the DNG files are the only large image files you have.
Parts of the following may illustrate what happens when the scratch file is on your boot drive:
The rule of thumb I follow to figure out scratch space says to figure on 50 to 100 times the size of your largest file ever multiplied by the number of files you have open.  I have seen the scratch file exceed 800 GB once, an admittedly rare occurrence, but it often exceeds 200 GB when stitching large panoramas and the like.
As an example—and stressing that I'm aware that others have even more scratch space than I do—I keep two dedicated, physically separate hard drives as my primary and secondary Photoshop scratch disks and a lot of GB free on my boot drive for the OS.  I also have 16 GB of RAM installed.
Additionally, if you only have a single HD, i.e. your boot drive, you'd need it to be large enough to accommodate both the swap files of the OS as well as Photoshop's scratch.

  • "Edit In" Photoshop CC not working for RAW or DNG files after applying LR 5.3 and Camera Raw 8.3

I just applied the Lightroom 5.3 and Camera Raw 8.3 updates and now am no longer able to open RAW or DNG files into Photoshop CC. When I select a file and choose "Edit In" Photoshop, photoshop will launch, then nothing will happen. After 2 to 5 minutes, an error will popup in Lightroom saying "The file could not be edited because Adobe Photoshop CC could not be launched." An error I've never seen before. When I click "Ok", Lightroom will show that it's "preparing a file for editing" in the upper left, it will create and save a psd to disk and in the catalog (another new behavior), then it will open in photoshop. All other file types (jpgs, tiff, psd) seem to work/open fine between applications. No difference if I open photoshop prior to selecting "Edit In". Selecting "Edit In" other applications, like Viveza, work fine.
I tried first deleting preference files in both applications. No luck. Ditto for plugins. Notta. Eventually I completely uninstalled and fresh installed Photoshop, Lightroom, and Bridge from the cloud. Same deal...can't open raw/dng files into Photoshop.
I'm at a complete loss, dead in the water, with a mountain of editing work piling on top of me. Kicking myself for applying the upgrades, which I had been delaying for some time to avoid just such a cluster%#$. Ugh.
    I'm on a PC running Windows 7 64bit.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In the normal situation, LR needs to see a PS installed for it to detect the Edit In PS option is possible, so if you uninstall both, then install PS, first, then LR.  Of course with this release there may be some hiccup that requires installing either one or the other, again, but if you've uninstalled both and are reinstalling both, then install PS, first.

  • 10.4.9 problem on DNG files and cd open/close tray

After the new OS release, the file preview of my Leica M8 DNG files are no more visible. I need to open them but even setting "show icon preview" in the folder prefernces i get no result. Apple Preview also doesn't open the file anymore.
In addition, to open the CD tray, now it requires to push the botton for at least double the time.
Waiting for the fixies to this annoying problems.....
    .oesse.

I updated to Tiger 10.4.9 the other day on my MacPro and today found that the Eject key wouldn't open the CD tray. When I realized that I had just experienced the same problem on a G5 at work a light went off in my head. Now reading this posting, I see that it is not "broken" but that the behavior of the key has changed.
Since the behavior of the key has always been to just hit it, not hold it down, to open and close the tray, I don't see any good reason to change it. No other key on the keyboard requires one hold it down. It's counter-intuitive. I had already filed a ticket with my company's Mac tech support service to say my CD drive was malfunctioning and may need replacement. I had been able to open the door with a paper clip in the tiny hole and then insert and play a disk, but had not been able to make the tray operate normally. All of this because the behavior of the key has changed. I'd be willing to bet that people will be buying and replacing drives because they aren't aware. Certainly there will be a lot of money and time spent registering and responding to tech support calls on this silly issue. What a waste.
I hadn't realized that the work computer had been updated to 10.4.9, and will still need to check this out, but I assume that is the case. I have to admit I didn't read the ReadMe file for the update I did at home because I was rushed and decided to forego that. Perhaps it speaks of this change. Does anyone know? Certainly if it does not, it should. I for one think Apple was a little knee-jerk on this one. Those who whine about a tray opening when they slip up and hit the wrong key should just be told to grow up.

  • Error message when trying to send .dng file from Lr to Ps

If I am working in Lr (5.4) and try to send a .dng file from Lr to Photoshop CC (reinstalled latest version from Adobe.com today, 4/13/2014), I get this message: "
Adobe Photoshop CC cannot be opened because of a problem. Check with the developer to make sure Adobe Photoshop CC works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X."
I uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop CC today and that did not fix the problem. I am in OS 10.8.5 on an iMac. Thanks!

    Hello,
Programs that run in the background cannot address controls on the frontend. This is why you are not able to run a Program using SAP Office Integration which is a Frontend Control and can be used only with the SAP Gui. Since background process cannot make use of UI screens or actions hence it's not possible use SAP Office Integration in background processing. The reason for this is explained in note 674060. Therefore sending emails using a batch macro is not supported.
    Best regards

  • Lightroom is no longer showing the .dng files

Lightroom is no longer showing the .dng files, everything else(Exif data and histogram), but no viewable picture. It did ask me for my serial number today, which I typed in. After that I went to import new RAW files, and the files themselves imported, but will not show the picture. None of my .dng files will show the picture now.

It seems that the ACR cache is either corrupt or the whole plugin might have got some corruption.
You can go ahead and delete the Lightroom x Catalog Previews.lrdata by following the location from the link below accrding to the OS. (x denotes version)
    http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/preference-file-locations-lightroom-4.html.
After relaunch if it still doesnt show the images try uninstall and reinstall of Lightroom by removing it from Programs & features if on Win 7 or from Add & Remove in Windows XP.
If you are on mac just take the Lightroom complete file and trash it & directly install the most recent update of Lightroom.

  • Can't open DNG files created with Mac CS5 downloader in Mac CS4 Photoshop

I recently installed CS5 on my mac but I kept CS4 installed as well.  I notice that I cannot open DNG files created with CS5 in Photoshop CS4.  Bridge CS4 shows the files only as icons - no image thumbnails.  I am able to open these same files on a Windows version of CS4.  Is there some plugin for my mac CS4 that will enable me to access the DNG files created with CS5?  Is there a way to use my CS5 downloader when converting my raw files from my camera to DNG files that will make them compatiple with PS and Bridge CS4?

    rr3rd wrote:

Well, yes...but you'll need to modify your DNG Converter prefs to allow for that. You''ll need a recent (ideally current DNG Converter 6.4.1 or above) and click on the DNG Converter preferences and select the correct DNG Converter options. Check DNG Converter 6.4.1 (the current version) and click on "Change Preferences" to be sure select Camera Raw 5.4 and later then make sure CS4 is updated to ACR 5.7 (which is the last version of ACR for CS4) However, the changes made to ACR 6.x really should be adopted since IQ for ACR 6.4.x is a lot better...

  • DNG files created with LR4 no longer display thumbnails w/ FastPictureViewer & Win7

I've been using the FastPictureViewer Codec pack so that DNG and camera RAW files show as thumbnails in Explorer for quite some time. Upon upgrading to LR4, DNG files no longer display as thumbnails, but as the generic Windows icon for an image.
Upon researching the issue, and upgrading the Codecs from the supplier (which still did not fix the issue), the supplier tells me the following:
What we solved [in the update] was a crash with the new files. Adobe did not document their
changes, so there is not much we can do except ignore the files. This is
what happens when owners of proprietary formats decide to change stuff
    without notice
If you turn off the "fast load" and "lossy" options the DNG will still be
created following the published 1.3 specification and will work with 3rd
    party software including ours.
The "new DNGs" are for Adobe private use only at the moment. We don't know
(beyond vague promises on employees personal blogs) if they will ever
document what they did and publish an updated specification, they are
certainly under no obligation to do so. The decision they took not to
release updated DNG specs even before LR4 came out was a deliberate one.
While I resolved the problem by turning "fast load" off, I find it highly disturbing that Adobe has made undocumented changes to the DNG format that break 3rd party software. I thought the whole idea of DNG was that it was an OPEN FORMAT and was to prevent situations such as this. At least this is how they sold it to the public and their argument against "proprietary camera manufactuer RAW formats" that could "change at any time".

Actually JS, RAW files converted to DNG with fast load checked from LR4.0 are read, thumbnails and full images are displayed in preview and with Finder in OSX Lion 10.7.3, along with keywords, EXIF data etc. I don't know whether the preview is the RAW or the fast loaded jpeg
    Not that it helps you
Adobe mentioned that they will be making the 1.3 data specs available in the next couple of months, I canna remember the link offhand, and it was a formal post, not an employee blog
Life changes, things upgrade, that is the way of things, but it is very frustrating.

  • DNG file types don't show thumbnails or previews

I am having trouble with Adobe Bridge CS5 for Mac OSX.  Up until last week it was working fine.  I haven't made any changes to my computer or my camera or anything like that.  But now .DNG files won't show their thumbnail or preview.  I only see the icon for the file type in the thumbnail list, and then when I click on the thumbnail, I just see a bigger version of the file type icon in the preview window.  However, JPEGs show up just fine.
I've searched through this forum and tried:
    - Resetting the Workspace
    - Resetting Bridge to default (Opening it with the Option key pressed)
    - Purging the cache
    - Checking that Camera Raw is properly installed (I have 6.7)
    - Updating DNG Converter to 8.3
But no luck yet.  Is this a new issue or something?

What about your old DNG photos which used to display properly? Can you still see those okay?
Have you set the Compatibility preference in DNG Converter to Camera Raw 6.6 and later?
Can you confirm that you have only one copy of Camera Raw 6.7 installed, and no other versions in alternative File Formats folders?
You could also try ACR 6.7.1:

  • Cannot open DNG files via Bridge or Lightroom in Photoshop?

I have a problem that has popped up since I installed the 5.6 RAW upgrade to my CS4/Lightroom 2.2 package.  Hopefully someone would be kind enough to help me diagnose it, as it affects only about 85,000 raw files currently in my Lightroom Catalogue.
The files were originally shot using a Canon professional camera in their proprietary RAW format, CR2. This conversion occurred upon input into Lightroom while at the same time the original CR2 files discarded (as I am not the son of a Hard Drive Manufacture!).  After the installation of the recent DNG/RAW converter upgrade I first noticed that the dng files would not display in Bridge even if I rebuild the cache, however, if I downloaded a Canon CR2 file they displayed without a problem.  This condition Bridge; Lightroom continued to display both types of RAW files correctly, however the dng file now had a small triangle with an explanation symbol inside it on the top right of the thumbnail preview indicating that “Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo, while there was no associated problem with the canon CR2 file.  The message 'You will not be able to make adjustments to this photo” was associated with the triangle icon.  Quite discerning, considering this has occurred to all 18,000 previously imported and rendered dng previews.
I then tried to import the files into Camera RAW using the ‘right-click technique’ in Bridge on the dng file symbols representing the thumbnails that would be there if I did not have this problem.  When I right clicked and selected ‘Open in Camera Raw’ there is no response what so ever.  If I drag the dng symbol to the Photoshop desktop it results in the following error message “Could not complete your request because of a program error.”  Either way there is no getting the dng file into Photoshop.
I have attempted the following fixes:
    1.       Clean reinstall of CS4 (saving preferences)
    2.       Clean update of Camera RAW 5.5
Does anyone out there have any solutions, recommendations, work-around or suggestions for this situation?  Is it a problem with a conversion of the metadata? The file structure itself?  Can it be fixed? At this juncture I am out of Tums’s, that nasty tasting pink stuff in the bathroom and am headed for the pharmacy for something stronger.
I would appreciate any help at all.

I know it does help find a solution, but I have run across some older DNG's that will open in LR 2 but will not open in Bridge/CSR 4. (These are DNG's created by Scott Kelby for his LR 2 book - I have attached on to this post.)  I can open them first in LR and then tell LR to edit the image in Photoshop and it will open. I have not yet had the issue of LR not being able to open the DNG correctly. However, I may not have done a DNG conversion since I installed the 5.6 upgrade. When I get a chance I will go convert some CR2 files and see what happens.
    Mike
I have uploaded one of Kelby's dng's that will not open in my desktop nor laptop Bridge/CSR 4 w/all updates. DNG 5.6 is unable to process them as well. It will import into LR. Other than that I cannot cause DNG's not to load into Bridge/CSR.
Opps the file is too big. You can download it from here. Kelby's Technical Copy Editor told me she did not have the same problem. Weird. I hope you solve your problem.

  • Unable to see converted NEF to DNG files in Photoshop CS

Aloha, my laptop recently crashed and I am in the midst of trying to restore my laptop to the way it was.  I am using Photoshop CS and back in December 2009 I downloaded DNG converter.  I am using a Nikon D90, shooting in RAW.  I don't recall what I did after downloading the DNG converter but I was able to convert the NEF files to DNG by simpling clicking on the DNG icon, selecting the file and click convert and the NEF were converted to DNG files.  I was able to use my Photoshop CS with these covverted files.  In the restoration of my laptop, I loaded my Photoshop CS program and then did a search on-line for the DNG converter.  I found a 5.6 version and later a 6.3 version.  I first downloaded the 5.6 version.  I then clicked on the icon, selected the files and click convert.  I can see the NEF photos being converted.  However, when I went into my Photoshop CS program, I did not see any DNG files even though I saw the files being converted.  I downloaded the 6.3 version and got the same results.  I also went into Change Preference and selected Camera Raw 2.4 and later.  But I though I am seeing the files being converted to DNG, I do not see any of those converted photos in my Photoshop CS program.  Can anyone help me?  Am I missing a step or two?  I would appreciate y'all expertise in this matter.  Also, anyone knows how to uninstall one of these DNG converters I downloaded?  Thank you very much, Ron

    Aloha Jim,
I went on Google and typed in DNG 6.3 converter.  The following appears:

    Name DNGConverter_6_3.exe File Size 50.6MB
    Proceed to Download<http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4924&fileID=4585>
I click on the proceed to download.  The follow appears.
Camera_Raw_6_3_updater.zip - ZIP archive, unpacked size 37,629,269 bytes
I assume I'm supposed click on this icon that looks like three stacks of
books and having the information next to it, Camera_Raw_6_3_updater.zip -
ZIP archive, unpacked size 37,629,269 bytes.  After clicking on the icon, I
come on a window that says, Camera_Raw_6_3_updater.zip - WinRAR (evaluation
copy).  In that window there are 4 folders. The first one does not have any
information except for 2 dots.  The second folder is labeled META -INF.  The
third folder says, payloads and the last is like a window, rectangular in
shape, white at the bottom 3/4 and the top portion is blue.  It is labeled
AdobePatchInstaller.exe.  Again, I am assuming I am suppose to click this. I
click it and then it looks like it is updating something, then a window that
says, Adobe Application Manger comes on which says, some updates failed to
install.  Another messages says, update is not applicable.  I don't recall
what I did next...tried other things but I finally got the icon (circular,
the top 1/3 white with 4 red letters, the bottom 2/3 greenish with a blue
arrow pointing down.  It is labeled as DNGConverter_6_3.  I clicked this
icon and get this open file - security warning window.  It states, the
publisher could not be verified.  Are you sure you want to run this
software.  Name: DNGConverter_6_3.exe. Publisher: Unknown Publisher; Type
Application; From C:\Documents and Settings\(other info.  I click on the Run
button  I then get an error message saying, Installer integrity -check has
failed.  Common causes include incomplete download and damaged media.
Contact the installer's author to obtain a new copy.  More information at:
    http://nsis.sf.net/NSIS_error.
I don't know what to do.  Back in December of 2009, all I did was downloaded
the DNG file that I found on Google, click on the DNG icon, and my NEF were
converted so I could see it in my Photoshop CS.
Am I doing anything wrong.  I would prefer not to invest $200 for Photoshop
CS5 since Photoshop CS along with DNG converter were meeting my needs.  I
know it may take some time to write this but perhaps could you write down
the step by step process you would do from searching for the DNG converter,
selecting the converter, downloading the converter, activate it so
everything is set up for use with the Photoshop CS.  I would appreciate it
very much.  It has been very frustrating and time consuming in trying to
resolve this issue.  I thought it would be so simple setting it up like the
first time when I first installed it.
Thanks again for responding to this matter.  I appreciate it very much.
    Aloha
