To update or Not To update: MBP 3.1 Late-2007

Ok all;
I've read about the Mail issues and the ethernet port issues. I am about to frinally upgrade to Windows 7 Pro on my bootcamp but I wondered if I should go ahead and update to 10.9. I do use Mail a lot and have a gmail address linked to it. Also, I have found that XP is suddenly performing VERY poorly, which is why I am trying to upgrade. Any news on this? Any and all advice is welcome
Here are my specs:

I suspect that Mavericks would not perform all that well on your 7 year old Mac, unless you have a good amount of RAM in it and maybe upgrade the hard drive to a SSD.
Also it doesn't make much sense to me that Windows would work any better on your mac with OSX upgraded; you're still just rebooting into the windows partition.
If your MBP is the 13 inch, it won't run Mavericks: OS X Mavericks: System Requirements

  • MBP 3.1 late 2007 temperature issues

So I have a 3+ year old MBP running 10.6.0 (after several reinstalls thinking the issue was a 3.6.5 or 3.6.6 upgrade) I finally realized my machine was really hot all the time (when it would boot at all). Odd since I normally keep a third party fan controller leveraged against the MBP's ridiculous heat loads. I now suspect a dead fan, but I don't know how to tell if a fan is working or not. My fan controller shows both fans ramping up as temp rises into the 90+C range (and beyond) for the simplest processes (like installing the newest python package). I can HEAR at least 1 fan going to extremes and I can FEEL the temp rising on the bottom of the case, but I can't tell if something else is wrong or if only one fan is turning. Is there a way to tell if both the fans are spinning without taking the case apart while operating?
Thanks in advance for the help.
    -Q
PS: temp while running one window of Chrome used to write this post and the fan controller / temp monitor results in a steady 45C / 114F temp.

Thanks for the link, a brody, I'll run the Apple Hardware Test momentarily.
The original symptoms were screen artifacts (in the form of blue vertical bars in all black areas), followed immediately by an all screen freeze (with a mouse I could move but not use), and a freakishly hot case (waaay hotter than normal in Mac OS X).
Originally thinking it was a GPU problem (either a driver from the recent updates, or a hardware failure) I went around and around trying to find a solution.
I noticed my MBP worked fine for about 30 minutes then the artifacts and system crash returned. The only fix is to leave it off for a while then turn it on. I have been able to keep it running by monitoring system temp and keeping it below 90C.
Thus I conclude my fans aren't cutting it, and the fan controller reports fan speed based off what speed the fans are being told to run at, not actual rpms.
I'll run AHT and report my findings.
    Thanks

  • I have a MBP 15" from late 2007, right before the unibody.  The battery has just entered "Replace Battery Now" state after several months in "Replace Battery Soon".  Where can I purchase a replacement battery?

Everything on Amazon gets terrible reviews, and I'll bet they are in the same state already.  The machine still runs great, so I don't need to replace it for what I need.  Appreciate any direction on this.

  • Late 2007 Macbook hangs or stutters following recent Leopard update

After running the software update process on my late 2007 Macbook, the computer seems to stutter. It will do something like respond to a mouse click for a very brief period of time, then hang for 20 to 30 seconds. Just trying to open Safari takes a half-hour or more. Everything was working fine before the updates, and running the Grey OS-X disk that came with it in test mode says no problems were found with the hardware. Booting from that same disk works great also (no delays/stuttering).
It sure looks like something went wrong in the update process. I checked for similar problems and found a mention of ApplicationEnhancer.bundle being a source of issues, but that doesn't exist on my disk at all, so that isn't the issue.
    Any ideas?
Since I can't use my Macbook's internal disk to boot from because of the sluggishness, can I boot from my external USB drive (10.5) and use the combo updater to put 10.5.8 onto the internal disk?
    Thanks in advance!

I've got the same problem - did you get any help on this?

  • I am having an issue waking my late 2007 MBP from hibernation after update to 10.8

I am having an issue waking my late 2007 MBP from hibernation after I updated to OSX 10.8 Mountain lion. Anything I can do to fix this? I cannot keep doing a hard reset.

for people with this problem in the future. I ended up solving this by taking out and reinserting the RAM. I had previously bought RAM from crucial.com and I thought it may have been a compatibility issue with that. After taking out the RAM and reinserting I have not had the problem. Be sure to insert the RAM with force, almost to the point it hurts. I think the problem for the MAC not waking from sleep was due to the RAM not properly inserted or being jarred out over time and not related to the instal of 10.8. also, if you are no longer under applecare and you call apple with an issue you get retards.
    cool. thanks. <3

  • After 10.6.7 (special MBP) update, MBP (early 2011) running much hotter

After installing the 10.6.7 MacBook Pro special updater, I note that my MBP is now running much hotter -- on the order of 20 to 30 degrees F (was running usually around 100 to 110 under load, now running 130 to 140 with just Safari open).
In Activity Monitor, nothing is using a lot of CPU % but I have one kernel task mopping up 78 threads and 515.9 MB of memory (consistent over at least the last 20 minutes as I check back on it). Parent process is noted simply as "kernel task (0)".
I've done a few restarts and some usual housekeeping -- any clues as to what's up and how I can see exactly what this process is?

I have a late 2009 MBP and I have noticed that just surfing the internet has caused the machine to run 20-30 degrees hotter. It used to hover around 40C (according to iStat...obviously it would climb under a load) when I was bumming around the net (no videos) and now it is anywhere between 60-70C doing the same stuff. I didn't really notice it till the other day when all I was doing was working on some bash scripts so at that point it was under very little load and it just seemed quite warm.

  • Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.12 and later can not be installed on OSX 10.6.8.

    Hi
I bought a new Canon EOS 5D mark 3 and noticed that my MacBook Pro with OSX 10.6.8 can not handle the new raw files.
Searching google shown that I need Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.12 or later.
So I tried with 3.12, 3.13 and 3.14, but all failed during installation with error: "Dieses Update unterstützt nur Aperture 3 und iPhoto 9."
    Hmmm
    Checking iPhoto ...
About IPHOT shows "Iphoto '09 version 8.1.2 (424)"
So I've updated Iphoto with version 9.2.1 (which I found matching my OSX after stepping down from highest version down ..... Apple is here not really supporting users here .......)
Unfortunately this is only an update.
So I need to install first a newer Iphoto version.
Iphoto 11 I can buy in the app store, but I can not install it on OS/X 10.6.8 .....
    Lost!
How do I get my raw files of 5Dm3 visible in OSX 10.6.8 ???????
    Any help welcome
    Thx
    Wolfgang

I maintain up to date my system, yet I have from time to time when I take RAW picture issues in iPhoto not reading them.  Today, looking for another issue I came across this update and I was hopping it would resolve my issues with the RAW photos from my Pentax K-30.
    The error:
    Installer quit unexpectedly.

This laptop cannot be upgraded further without hindering its performance.  Hence, I need to keep the version of iPhoto that I currently have.

  • The action could not be completed. Try again later when try to update apps

    Hi there,
Today I did run the update utility in my unblocked Palm Pixi Plus. I got the message that updates are available for most of the apps I have installed. When I hit on show updates, I can see the list of updates but after a few seconds I got the following message: The action could not be completed. Try again later.
My Palm webOS version is 1.4.5
Unfortunately, I just realized that online support chat was discontinued, it helped me a lot before.
I appreciate I find a fix in here.
    Thank you in advance,
    Luis.

Honestly saying, the problem I had already a week, I tried to solve it on their own, but all my attempts were unsuccessful, I am sure that this problem is not related to what some of my actions, cause I never made any manipulations with phone.
I really appreciate the attention rendered by the support services, I just need that everything works fine.
I am sure that this is some sort of a strange problems, I have long been searching for an answer in the Internet came on similar way problems have other users.
I received today a update notice for App Catalog, I saw that HP Palm updated App Catalog, I updated my App Catalog, check again, but still nothing changed, same problem "The action could not be completed. Try again later" with yellow exclamation mark.
So, I will wait for a few days, will see what's happening.
    Best regards

  • Updated MBP to 10.8.4 unable to use firewire.

Updated MBP to 10.8.4 from 10.8.3 My firewire port now fails to connect to the external hard drives., Updated MBP to 10.8.4 from 10.8.3 My firewire port now fails to connect to the external hard drives. and other firewire device. Everything worked fine before the update.

Did you download the update from the App Store or use the Combo update? If you used the App Store, try the Combo update -> http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1659 - and see if that solved your problem (I have only one FireWire 800 drive left and it's connected to my Apple Thunderbolt Display and I've had no problems with it).

  • HT4623 I have an ipad1. Can it be updated to ios5 or later? How?

I have an ipad1, the original iPad. Can it be updated to ios5 or later? How? I have no software update button in general settings.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

  • Updating ACR to a later version

I currently have Version 7.1 of ACR installed and am using it with PSE11 on my iMac.  I have tried several times to update it to a later version, but to no avail.  The Help/Update tool tells me I have the current version and I have Photoshop Elements 11 ticked for automatic updates.  I have tried downloading Version 7.4 from the web but when I go back to look at what version I am using it always shows as 7.1.354.
On my iMac I am also having no luck viewing JPG and Tiff files in ACR in PSE11 even though I have Camera Raw enabled when I open a file.  They open in PSE but not Camera Raw.
I have PSE11 installed on an HP laptop with ACR Version 7.4 and have no such difficulties, but I am tlrying to wean myself off the laptap to use the iMac 100% of the time.
Any assistance  as to how I can solve these problems would be greatly appreciated.

    Why doesn't it update?
    Any errors?
What version of iTunes are you currently running?
Have you tried simply downloading the iTunes installer from apple.com/itunes/download ?

  • OWA Blank Logon Page After Update Rollup 12 for Exchange 2007 SP3

    Hello
After installing Update Rollup 12 for Exchange 2007 SP3, can no longer access OWA - internally or externally through Internet Explorer -  I just get a blank page (with IE). If I use Chrome or Firefox, and it uses the basic logon, I get a page with just
text, and am able to logon successfully. I have looked at several related forums, but have not found a fix yet. I've seen several people with similar issue have had success by copying contents from a previous owa folder version to the latest one, then running
Updateowa.ps1 and restarting IIS. This did not resolve the issue for me.
Another forum suggested running remove-owavirtualdirectory and
new-owavirtualdirectory, however I haven't attempted that yet, as I'm unsure how I could reverse the changes that the command runs if things get worse.
    Any assistance will be appreciated.
