To upgrade or not - opinions appreciated

Hello all,
I purchased my first Mac in March 2007, it came with Tigersand I'm still using Tiger 10.4.11 It's solid as a rock, never problems with the OS or Macbook Pro. I passed up the upgrade to Leopard because I was not on Tiger very long and thought - why upgrade ?
Now Snow Leopard is out - Tiger is still supported... The main reason why I was going to upgrade is because it's a 64 Bit OS - run quicker, and I will upgrade my memory for the 1GB I have to 4GB.
I'm not a "power user", I use the Mac for email, heavy calendar usage for appointments, Internet, Open Office, I use Parallels, and I have a Me account to sync my Macbook Pro with my I-Phone.
Do you recommend upgrading - or wait until Apple stops support on Tiger ?
Also ---- I read ---- where I can use the "upgrade" version, even though I have Tiger, it's an "honor" system - anybody try this on Tiger ?
Thanks,
Bob

First, I agree with Tom Gewecke that the performance improvement in Snow Leopard are very noticeable -- at least for me, this has been true on each of the Macs I have upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. However, I have not upgraded a Mac that supports Tiger to Snow Leopard, so keep that in mind.
Perhaps more importantly, I can't live without the new features of Leopard vs. Tiger now that I have gotten used to using them -- they increase my performance dramatically, & that is where I think the big gains are. Snow Leopard adds a few new features to the OS too, & I'm starting to appreciate them as well. (For instance, I regularly use the new built in text substitution feature to automatically expand unique abbreviations into whole words or phrases -- I never have to type out "Snow Leopard" or "Disk Utility" in these forums but instead just type "@SL" or "@DU" & they are automatically expanded for me.) You mention that you are a heavy calendar user, so you might find Snow Leopard's improved support for WebDAV in iCal useful -- since I run a local WebDAV server for use with iCal, I noticed this immediately.
Secondly, it is not true that there are only a few 64 bit apps available. Almost all the bundled apps that come with Snow Leopard like Safari & especially Finder are both 64 & 32 bit capable. Since you indicate you have a Core Two Duo CPU in your Mac, Snow Leopard will load the 64 bit code & you should see a substantial increase in responsiveness for these familiar apps. However, note that you do not need to upgrade to Snow Leopard to use 4 GB of RAM -- both Tiger & Leopard support that as well. The difference is that Snow Leopard can support more than 2 GB +per application+, but you will rarely if ever need that much for any common app you are likely to run.
Thirdly, I would never advise anyone to violate anybody's software license agreements; however, do not confuse Apple's marketing material with the Snow Leopard EULA. The $29 U.S. retail product is not an "upgrade" version & in fact is exactly like (& comes with exactly the same EULA) as the OS product in the Box Set, which is just 3 products boxed together & sold at a modest discount vs. the price of each item bought separately. Some users don't seem to understand that because of this, if Tiger users were violating the EULA by using the $29 version, they would be doing the same by using the same Snow Leopard disc with the same EULA in the Box Set. Obviously, this is not true.
Part of the confusion about this is because there is an "upgrade" product, but it is not sold at retail & is clearly marked as such. Just make sure you avoid it & buy a retail Snow Leopard product & this will not apply to you.
So, my answer to the upgrade or not question is a resounding "yes!" Just be sure to buy an appropriate Snow Leopard product & to back up at least your user files before applying it. (Cloning the startup drive is better but not absolutely necessary.) Also be prepared to update third party apps, since some may need revision to work with Snow Leopard, & try to avoid any hacks or "enhancers" to the OS as much as possible, since these things are almost always OS version specific & can cause all sorts of problems when the OS changes.

  • Memory Upgrade Did Not Seem To Help Much

I just upgraded the memory on my Power Mac G4 with a System 512 MB 168 DiMM 64MX64 SDRAM PC133 CL @ UNBUFF card that was the largest recommended for my machine by Crucial. This put the memory at 896 MB. The machine seems to be running a little better but I am not real pleased with the speed. I thought it would be much faster with the upgrade. I remember reading that if I increased the memory by 512 MB I needed to install two 256 MB cards. Since Crucial recommended the card I installed it anyway. Could this be the problem or is something else likey going on here? I just designated my external hard drive as the startup disc prior to the upgrade. The new starup disc is a 120 GB Edge DiskGo. The CPU Speed of the computer is 400 MHZ. I am running Tiger.
I don't know whether I need to return the 512 card and get two 256's or if I should add even more memory. Or, is this the best I am going to do with this machine unless I look at even more hardware upgrades. I have put just about all the money I planned to into the machine. Please advise.

    Yeah
Crucial RAM is usually more expensive than other RAM manufacturers/suppliers, but that is because the RAM is of compatible quality for Macs.
$90 is, somewhat expensive for a 512 MB RAM stick, but, again, it's going to work in your Mac with, hopefully, no issues (RAM can go bad regardless of whom it's purchased from).
That said, the more RAM the better.
If you can't afford to install the full 2 GB of RAM immediately, at least splash out for another 512 stick of RAM to punp the Mac up 1 GB. Add the rest of the RAM as time and funds allow.
If your main internal drive is full or getting full, your G4 can take and additional internal IDE drive.
internal drive will be so much faster than external FW drive.
    Again, it's cost.
I am assuming that the full internal drive, in question is your G4's original OEM internal drive.
    It's either a 10, 20 or 30 GB drive.
You didn't mention what your Mac's internal drive size is so I'm guessing here.
A 10 GB doesn't leave very much room for large amounts of data storage. A 20 GB drive is OK, But if you filled either a 20 or 30 GB drive, it's also time to think about, again, spending some cash and add a new/larger internal drive.
An 80 GB drive will cost around $60-$70 Dollars US..
Your Mac can take up to a 120 GB drive. The cost will be around $90, also.
So, to get better performance and more storage internal to the Mac you'll be spending between $160-$200 US..
The installation of the drive isn't that difficult and drive manufacturer will have detailed instructions of how to install into a Mac.
You can choose just to use the new drive as data storage or you could partition the drive and use part of it to install a clean version of OS X (or use CarbonCopy Cloner to make a copy of your existing OS X system (assuming every is running AOK) and use the rest of the drive as storage.
I think the addditional 512 MB memory and drive upgrade is worth it, IMHO.
You mentioned that you really want to run multiple programs, though.
With 1 GB of RAM, you may be able to run, perhaps, two, maybe three, data/RAM intensive apps, and that's probably going to be all.
Again if you want to run, say, five or six apps at one time, depending on how data/RAM intensive they are, more RAM, in in some cases, more HD space, make this doing easier.
I don't think splashing out cash to make some modest improvements to your older G4 is a waste of time/money.
    Especially, these particular upgrade suggestions.
Now, if we were talking about something like a CPU upgrade, then my opinions would be a bit different as the costs of adding additional RAM, HD and CPU upgrade would put you in a position of maybe looking and considering purhasing a newer Mac with better specs than your G4. Something like a newer G4 model, newer G4 iMac, G4 eMac or maybe look at the last generation G5 Power Macs or iMacs.
But, I digress, the decision to make these more modest upgrades is up to you in the end.
I bought and purchased one of the last of the remaining G4 1.25 Ghz MDD models about a year or so, ago. As of recently, I just put in 1 more 512 MB RAM stick to max out my RAM to 2.0 GB.
I put in a larger internal HD (I use an existing external FW 120 GB drive I had with my previous Mac) and I upgraded my G4's video card. The original video card was fine, but I wanted DVD's to play with better screen quality on my Mac and I wanted better screen response and redraws with certain graphic/image apps.
So, the video card purchase was more of "luxury" upgrade,
not a needed upgrade, per se.
You asked for some direction for making your particular Mac speedier as you didn't think that the one 512 MB stick really didn't add all that much speed.
Your G4 can get speedier, but only by throwing some more cash at it.
Just as long as you feel your not overdoing it.
My general guidelines for doing Mac hardware/software upgrades is if the immediate upgrade costs are $500-$600 and above, it might be time to,at least, look at newer Mac alternatives, either newer/used or brand new Macs to compare costs/features before proceeding with any more upgrades to an older Mac system.

  • Adobe Flash Upgrade will not install after Firefox upgrade to 3.6.7

I upgraded to Firefox 3.6.7. After the upgrade I got a message that I needed to upgrade Adobe Flash due to security vulnerabilities. The Flash upgrade will not install. It simply sits and never installs no matter how long I wait.
    == This happened ==
    Just once or twice

Thanks for your response. I have previously reviewed this. The only potential problem it seems to resolve is having 2 versions of Shockwave installed. I only have one. The only thing I can think of to do is just uninstall the one version and see if it will trigger an installation. When I go to the Flash install site, I agree to the terms and get the next screen that says download will start. I never get a message asking if it's ok to run or anything. No matter where I look for a download for Flash I wind up at the same place with the same problem. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

  • Would like to upgrade to Dragon Naturally Speaking 11 from DNS 6 (which would also entail a necessary upgrade from Windows 2000 to 7) but understand after all this expense and trouble, DNS upgrade may not be compatible with Firefox 6?

    Question
Would like to upgrade to Dragon Naturally Speaking 11 from DNS 6 (which would also entail a necessary upgrade from Windows 2000 to 7) but understand after all this expense and trouble, DNS upgrade may not be compatible with Firefox 6?
Main priority is voice activation upgrade. Ideas about how to proceed appreciated!

AFAIK, it's been over three years since a WinXP laptop or desktop PC has been sold; I specifically bought a laptop in June 2008 because it was being clearanced by that retail chain to meet Microsoft's deadline, and got it real cheap. It was tagged for the store manager to purchase, but he let me have it because I exceeded his expectations for the services I performed for his store and thought I deserved it. Anything that wasn't made for Vista-compatibility will be very iffy with Win7, IMO - so that basically rules out anything that was made before like Oct or Nov 2007.
Unless another DNS 11 user happens to see this thread and can verify whether it works in Firefox 6.0 or not, I don't what to recommend except for you doing a web search to see what other DNS / Firefox users have to say about compatibility.

*download the full firefox setup file from getfirefox.com
*uninstall firefox on the machine (but don't chose to delete your custom files & settings in the uninstaller!)

The current iTunes 10.5 upgrade does not install on Windows 7 and indicates a faulty install package (error 2324). Advice or details on the release date for a proper fix? I'm not able to roll back to the prior version, so I'm stuck in limbo.

There have been a number of problems with installing the latest iTunes on Windows 7 64-bit machines during the last couple of weeks.  You might want to do a search on that topic and see if anyone has a solution.  There have been various versions of the problem but a lot related to errors in the download package or failure to download.

I had a Note 3 and had 220+ contacts.  While I had it I performed a factory reset several times and always got all of my contacts restored.  My phone was upgraded to  Note 4 at my job yesterday.  I completed a factory reset on My Note 3, turned it into my IT department and received my Note 4.  My phone had since only has 72 contacts (it was 56 then 76 and now 72).  When I run the Verizon Cloud app it will display an error code 4600.  While in the Verizon Cloud app, if I open detailes about contacts it states there are only 5 contacts.  i did use the Backup assistant on the Note 3 but that app is not found on the Note 4.
I went by the Verizon store yesterday, the rep stated that she needed the old phone (it was wiped),
How can I restore the remaining contacts to my Note 4 from verizon?

Thank you for reaching out to us, todfloyd. Sorry to hear about your contacts not all syncing correctly to your new Note 4. Let's see what we can do to get them all over to your new phone. Have you had a chance to view your contacts via your My Verizon page? Once you have logged in, please hover you mouse over the My Verizon Tab, and click on the View All option at the bottom of the pop up.
Once the page loads, please view the options on the right hand side. Under Additional Actions, please choose Manage my Contacts and Media.
Do all of your contacts appear there?

  • TS1702 PrintDirect Application Upgrade does not reauthenticate on iPad Air.

    Hi
    Can anyone assist me please.
I purchased the PrintDirect Application for both my iphone 5S and new ipad air, both are running latest IOS software. The app. is downloaded first as a free app, then with purchase of an in-app upgrade to obtain full features. On the iphone 5S all is fine, on the ipad air the upgrade is not reauthenticating. By that I mean that when the upgrade is first downloaded, all is fine. After closing the app and re-starting the upgrade is stated as installed but does not function. if i download again for free, the app works correctly......until I close it and try to start again. The only way I can get it to work is to download the update again each time I wish to use it. I have tried deleting and re-installing from scratch, turning ipad off/on, etc, but no change.
App providers have not been able to help, suggest I contact itunes, waiting on call.
has anyone else had this problem with this app or others.
    thanks

    Hello Team
I am seeing this issue while I am trying to do an in-place upgrade from SQL Server 2012 to SQL 2014. Both being Enterprise Editions I am still seeing the below error message in the Feature Upgrade checks.
" The specified Edition upgrade is not supported"
Please let me know if anyone else has faced this issue and any workarounds? I am not doing "Edition Upgrade", just wanted to upgrade same edition of 2012 to 2014.
SQL Server details that is being upgrade:

    Hi Shanky_621
Thanks for the reply. Yes I was told that it is SQL 2014 Enterprise Edition. Is there a way to verify that? Also yes I did not select the free Evaluation or Express Editions.
Just run the setup you got for SQL server 2014 and you would reach to page where it would say enterprise or standard after that cancel the setup . Actually version number can be found from Mediainfo located in same folder where setup.exe is located but edition
cannot be found by that way.

The upgrade doesn't simply happen. The Yosemite installer is downloaded to your Applications folder and normally it starts but then waits for you to begin the actual installation. Look in your Applications folder for the installer, double click on it and follow the instructions. Note that when the installation is finished, the installer deletes itself. If you want to keep it for future use, duplicate it first.
