To use Home Sharing, do both my computers have to be on and running iTunes?

I just got a Macbook and I'm trying to transfer all the items in my desktop computer to it. I had both computers on with Home Share on and everything was working fine. I left the computers to do their thing (transfering 30+ hrs of video takes a couple hours) and when I came back my laptop had died and my dad was on the desktop. I charged my laptop and got on iTunes from it only to see that a few of my TV shows had yet to be transferred. When I tried to Home Share again, the button was gone from the sidebar. My question is, do both computers have to be on and running iTunes in order to Home Share? I just want to know, because this is a minor inconvenience.

You need to have the Computer you are sharing from be turned on, and obviously the device you are sharing to, also needs to be on.
Note:  Home Sharing can only be done from a computer running iTunes. You cannot Home Share from an iOS device to another iOS device or computer.

I am trying to import songs to my new macbook pro from my old computer using home sharing. Both computers say that home sharing is now on but neither show up in each other's library menu. I am logged on with the same apple id for both computers. and both are on a stable wireless connection

Logging into itunes store on each machine wth different Apple IDs is OK Autorising each others machines with the other Apple ID is OK. This is completley separate from Home Sharing
For Home Sharing to work you need to
File > Home Sharing > Create Home Share.
You need to select one of the two Apple IDs you are using and ENTER THIS ON BOTH MACHINES WHEN CREATING THE HOME SHARE.
    Home sharing will then work

  • If I delete a song off my personal computer iTunes while using Home Sharing will it delete that song off of anyone else's iTunes or just mine?

    Anyone?

    Hi 24fantrue,
When you are using Home Sharing, you are streaming your music to the other devices that you've set up on your home network.  Your music does not reside on any other device or computer unless someone copies a song to their device.
So, if you delete a song from your iTunes library, the other users in your household will no longer be able to play or copy the song.  Does that make sense?
The resource below will explain how Home sharing works.

Import items from other libraries using Home Sharing
Click the Sharing button near the top left of the iTunes window, and choose a library from the pop-up menu.
Click the button for the type of content you want to import (Music, for example) near the top left of the window.
Click the Show pop-up menu at the bottom of the iTunes window and choose “Items not in my library.”
Select the items you want to import, and click Import.
    Hope that helps ...

  • Can i use home sharing while mixing wired and wireless connections?

I have an HP Pavilion desktop connected to my wireless router with an Ethernet cable.  My AppleTV is connected wirelessly to the 5GHz band on my simultaneous dual-band wireless-N router.  How do I share photos and music from the HP desktop to the AppleTV using Home Sharing?

    I have a similar problem.
I have 2 computers (and other ethernet addressable devices (printer etc) upstairs connected into a gigabit switch (d-link DG-2205) - computer A is an old 2002 G4 without wifi, computer B is a 2010 Mac mini wired into the switch. Downstairs, I have Computer C - a 2012 Mac mini connected to the fios router via wifi and there is a 1080p Apple TV connected via wifi.
Computer A (Wired switch Connection) can only see computer B's (Wired switch Connection) music library.
Computer B (Wired switch Connection) can see both computer A's and computer C's (Wireless router connection) Music library.
Computer C (Wireless router connection)) can see computer B's (Wired switch Connection) music library.
Apple TV can see computer B and C.
The problem is that computer A Is the music computer That I want to stream throughout.
If computer A and B can see each other, and computer C and AppleTV can see computer B, then why can't everyone see computer A ?
    Any response appreciated.
What version of iTunes is the Computer A running - it may not support Home Sharing.

  • Hello, I'm trying to transfer my old itunes library to a new computer using home sharing. It's switched on in both computers, but I can't see the old library in the new computer. But I can see tracks from the new computer on the old one. Please help.

Apologies for poor syntax, my arm's a little sore. Yes, one computer (old) is vista, new is Windows 8. Shouldn't I be able to import the whole library using home sharing? Am I doing something wrong? Thank you in advance

I am having the same issue.  I recently purchased a new laptop and I have spent the last 3 days using the home share to slowly transfer all 22,000 songs.  However yesterday morning when I turned on both computers to continue the process I am having the following issue:
both computers are running the same windows OS (8)
both computers are running the same version of itunes
both computers are logged in with the same apple ID
both computers have home sharing turned on
Now however I can see the NEW computers itunes library in the drop down box on the OLD computer, however I can not see the OLD computers itunes library on the NEW computer.  I can no longer see "HOME SHARES" on the drop down LIBRARY list on the new computer.  I've taken the following steps to correct the error:
    reset the router
completely shut down BOTH computers and brought them back up
    reopened itunes
    re-logged in on both PC's
re-activated both PC's with home share
The articles and help from the apple sites are worthless and it says if you can't see a library just turn home sharing off then back on - I've completed the above steps NUMEROUS times.  After spending 4 days on transferring my music I really do not want to have to start over by using an external hard drive and then importing that way.  I would like some help on discovering why the new laptop is no longer seeing my old library. (When it has been working up to this point)
    Thanks in advance.

  • How do I use home sharing between my home computer and my work computer so I can listen to the same music both places?

Hello. I am trying to use my work computer with itunes to listen my my music on my itunes on my computer at home. I have signed into both. My computer at home is off, is there a way to listen to all my music on both computers by using Home Sharing or another means?

The best way I know is to sign up for iTunes Match.  All your music is stored in the cloud and can be accessed by up to 10 devices.

  • Can I use home sharing (on my mac using my other computers library) even if I'm not in a WiFi zone?

I have used Home-Sharing on my Dell Laptop and now my Mac. My mac uses the Dell's library and I was wondering whether I would have to be using the same WiFi code or whether I could be on a different WiFi or even have none and still use it?

You'd need both computers to be connecting to the same wifi network in order to Home Share.

  • If my wife and I have two seperate itunes accounts can we both have home sharing on the same computers at the same time or is it one or the other

If my wife and I have two seperate itunes accounts can we both use home sharing at the same time on different computers to view each others librarys or is it one or the other only

You can share your libraries within the same household:

  • How can I use home sharing between our iphones (create playlists from both accounts at once)

How can I use home sharing between our iphones, so that we can create playlists with songs from both of our libraries?  We share a Macbook Pro (separate accounts) and each have the new iphone, but when I have my iphone and try to create a new playlist, I can only grab songs from one account.  Is there a way to create a playlist using both accounts since we are sharing?
Does it have to be created within iTunes first on our Mac?

The short answer: because Home Sharing isn't designed for sharing apps, and apps aren't designed to be shared.
The longer answer:  Think of it like this...
You download some music in iTunes.  With Home Sharing, another user can listen to it by streaming it over the network.  But the data itself is on your computer.  If you turn off the computer or take it off the network, the other user can't access it.
But if you send another user the app, they aren't just streaming the data- they installed it on their iOS device.  Because they weren't the one that purchased it, such a transfer could easily be considered "piracy" or "stealing," and nobody likes that (least of all, Apple).
When iTunes sees this app, it obviously recognized it, as if saying, "Hey, how did you get this app on your device, if I have no record of you purchasing/downloading it from the iTunes store?"

    Hi ashleymartinsmith!
I have an article for you that may help you understand Home Sharing a little better:
    Understanding Home Sharing
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3819
Home Sharing in iTunes is designed to let you easily share your iTunes media libraries between up to five computers in your household. You can also use Home Sharing to play your iTunes content on your iOS devices and Apple TV (2nd generation) if they are connected to your home Wi-Fi network.
The important thing to note here is that all connected devices must be on the same Wi-Fi network for Home Sharing to be functional. Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!

  • How do I drag and drop files between computers when using Home Sharing in ITunes?

How can I drag music files between computers while using Home Sharing? An older version of ITunes had a Home Sharing icon in the column browser near the playlist so it was easy to drag and drop.

  • I have transferred itunes and library using home sharing.  How do I 'turn off' the old computer and just use the new one?  home sharing requires both to be on at the moment.

I have transferred my itunes content and playlists to a new computer using home sharing.  Now I want to use my new computer only, so need to 'turn off' the old one.   What do i do?

    Hello shiv99,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you have used Home Sharing to play the music from one computer on another, but now you would like to only use the new computer. It sounds as though you have set up the content to share between computers, but have not actually I’m ported the media from the old computer to the new one. I would suggest following the troubleshooting steps located in the attached article to import you music from the old computer to the new one. After that process is complete, you can turn off Home Sharing if you would like and the content will be in the iTunes library on your new computer.
