To use iphoto or the camera's proprietary software

Hi folks
I'm a digital photography AND mac os newbie, so i'm a bit confused.
I have a Canon A700 which comes with Canon's software. My question is, should I use iphoto or the proprietary software? I mean, even after I tell my mac to set one of them as the default programme, I can still switch right?
Which program is more nifty? I don't know if iphoto can, for example, do the photostitch that one of canon's software can. Any of you canon users just stick with one program?
Thanks in advance for any advice given.

I use the Canon software to transfer photos from my S80 for three reasons:
(1) iPhoto wants to download all of the photos every time and then decide what to do with duplicates. Canon lets me pick, either images I flag in the camera or from a screen of thumbnails; I use the latter method. My iMac is USB 1.1 and it'd hurt to wait for all of the images to download every time. Canon's technique is much faster. Canon also flags the images on the SD card when they are downloaded, and you can see which ones are new in their 'browser'. Same goes for Canon images read via a card reader.
(2) Canon's ImageBrowser shows far more info about the images than iPhoto. "MyColors" and other unique/proprietary info is now available in iPhoto. Also you can customize some in-camera stuff only with the Canon software: some sounds and the "owner's name" field -- the latter gets burned into every image.
(3) You can tell the Canon software (in a Preference pane) to rotate photos when you transfer them from the camera to the computer. The actual file on the camera chip is always 'landscape' but if the auto-rotate bit is set on the camera, the images will be flagged and rotated upon transfer. The Canon software puts the images in a folder and then you import to iPhoto via the menu or drag-n-drop.
If iPhoto imports a flagged file directly from the camera, it internally stores the non-rotated image in the Originals folder and the rotated one in the Modified folder. So it may depend on whether you want to always have two copies of every 'portrait' shot stored in iPhoto. I expect this also affects how long it takes to import the photos.
Yes, PhotoStitch is a Canon feature, too. It's available in Adobe PhotoShop Elements, too, if you later buy it for other features. And yes, you can change your 'default' software later.
Bottom line: I strongly recommend using the Canon software to interface with the camera.

Thanks for your reply. I looked in the Video app but it is empty. When I connect the iPad to iTunes on the iMac and look in  Apps > File Sharing > iPhoto, the video that I added is in iPhoto on the iPad but I cannot actually find the video in iPhoto on the iPad.

First confirm that you can create a PDF file of your book as described in this Apple document: iPhoto '11: Preview a book, card, or calendar before you order or print it. Post back with the results.

  • The disk containing your iPhoto library is running low on space. How is this possible? I have no photos and have never used iphoto and the program is up to date.

How is this possible? I have no photos and have never used iphoto and the program is up to date. I try to import and drop my pictues into iphoto but nothing happens or I get above statement. Help please!

Then it's a bogus message and indicates that the default library is damaged.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library' and use that one.

Ipad3, using iPhoto, running the latest IOS6, I'm a photographer, please tell me why has the delete (X) been removed in iPhoto?

Ralph, again thanks for the input, but I respectfully disagree.  I have been using iPhoto with the iPad3 since it was launched.  I have taken and imported at a minimum 6-7k pictures and have used the same methodology of editing and deleting photos (inside of iPhoto app), using the delete (X) on the task bar.  I'm an IT project manager as well as an certified software consultant, in other words, I have a better than average knowledge and understanding of apps and the functionality.  My only point is that something that was quite functional and very user friendly has now become far more difficult. It was only 9 bucks and a pretty good little piece of software, I'll just find something else that is less time consuming and will check back for iPhoto update and from time to time.  Again, thank you for your feedback.

  • Snow/Canon HF200 - Only iPhoto recognizes the camera - not iMovie

Before upgrading to Snow Leopard, my camera folder would show up in the finder, and iPhoto would launch automatically. Now with Snow, iPhoto still opens automatically, but the folder doesn't show up. Neither is the video camera recognized in iMovie. Please help!

You can always just transfer manually, the files from your camera onto the computer. If an icon appears on your desktop, when you connect the camera, you can always double-click on that icon to open it and then just locate the video files and Drag and Drop them into iMovie, or use FILE > IMPORT.

  • Uploading from iPhoto to the camera memory card

Wondering if I can upload pictures in iPhoto back to my camera's memory card. Or if my card is in a reader, is there software that will "write" photos in iPhoto onto the memory card? Maybe a dumb question but giving a relative a photo frame that reads all kinds of memory cards then displays the photos. I want to create a custom group of photos in my computer then upload those to the memory card for playback on the photo frame.
    Thanks!

    HI BDF,
If your camera card mounts on the desktop like a volume, double click the volume to open it and find the folder where the photos should be. If you do not know or if your card does not mount on the desktop, then you can use a card reader and this application.

  • Importing pictures using iPhoto to the pictures folder

I don't understand why I can't select a folder to import my pictures to when using iPhoto. I really like the way I have all my pictures organized in my pictures folder but it only lets me import to the iPhoto library folder. If I try to move the pictures after I import them, then iPhoto can't find them and gets confused. Is there any way to rectify this?

That is not the way iPhoto works - you need to use iPhoto correctly or use a different program
iPhoto is a SQL databasse program and it must be the only program that makes changes to its database - you never need to and never should go into its database - you must NEVER make any changes of any sort to the structure or contents of the iphoto library (the SQL dataabase)
You access your photos via iPhoto or via the media browser in the lower left hand corner of every open/attach/upload window
If you want to use iPhoto then you need to learn it - start by watching the tutorials

  • A statement really.  iPhoto is the worst piece of software I've ever tried to use.  I plan to stop using it.

Faces causing problems.   Distorted the photos when I moved them from my previous Mac OSX.   I don't want "faces" but don't how to disable that.
It has created 30,000 records!  It has pulled faces of complete strangers out of some photos!

Well as you were running 10.4, which is two - and almost three - iterations behind the current OS, I'm not sure they'll be entertaining feature requests for it.
You are constantly confusing Machines, OS and software and conflating them into some other entity. You need to separate them out in your head.
    I had an Mac OS X 10,4
No you didn't. You had a Mac that had 10.4 on it. That's an older version of the System Software.
came away with an iMac Snow Leopard.
... An iMac with the Snow Leopard version of the OS - 10.6.
From there I transferred the photos to the new Mac.
And the key question is "How?". From your description you imported a library from the external to one on the new. This fits the scenario you describe:
I find after the load I have photos all in a disorganized condition, which much duplication of photos to the point that there are 30,000 photos!
I posted instructions above for bow to migrate a Library to a new machine.
"Faces" were not used on the Mac OS X and I suppose I must have turned them off at some point (?)
Faces is a feature of iPhoto 09 and later. Whatever version of iPhoto you had on the older machine "the Mac OS X") did not have the feature. You did not turn them off. As we keep telling you, you can't turn them off. But as you don't use them they should be invisible to you.
My advice is to trash this bunged up library, redo the migration as per the above instructions and ignore the faces feature.

  • My problem using iPhoto Having the horizontal lines going through the  photo when printing of a website

My problem is using the I Photo and printing a picture with horizontal lines going through it

Your topic title and topic content are a bit confusing?  Are you printing a website page? That would be thru Safari or other browser.
Or is a photo from a website?  If so how was it imported into iPhoto?
Also what system and iPhoto version are your running?
Does the photo print correctly from Preview or other application?
What's the pixel dimensions of the image?
How much free space do you have on your boot drive?

Yes, and you can turn wi-fi access on after enabling airplane mode if you want or need internet access via an available wi-fi network.

  • I am trying to use Iphoto and the share button is grayed out so I cannot send an email

I have tried multiple times to upload photos but the "share" button is grayed out. Anyone know how to fix that?

That refers to iMovie, not iPhoto, and photos in Events can certainly be shared to Email.
What email option have you selected? IPhoto? Or some other one?

  • Can you still use iPhoto on the iPad without having a Mac

I just bought the new iPad, and i'm looking at the iPhoto app.
I only have a Windows computer, so no iPhoto on a computer.
Can I still input photos into the app with PhotoStream, or through iTunes shared photos or any other way?
    thanks

When I watched video reviews of the app, no one covered importing photos.
The albums and pictures from their iPhoto on their Mac were already setup
in the iPad app, so I didn't know if they allowed other ways of importing pictures
    into the app.
So I take it there are multiple ways of getting  my photos from my windows PC
    into this app.
    thanks
