To Windows Users Considering Mac Pro

When I first was considering a mac pro ( I have just bought one a week ago - end of june 2011 )
My first few posts prior to purchasing on here were probably very defensive and pushing for reasoning.
Only after purchasing do I understand why I got the responses I did.
I dont want to say that MAC is God like.
But its close to it
So having been a windows user for so long and just switched over ( yes it did cost a lot but its worth it! )
Here is what I have found useful
1, The speed that it loads and shuts down is just **** dreamy! Its the way computers should run! ( windows is horrific compared on that ) That was always my biggest peeve with windows, it took forever loading its crap in the background
2. The quality is incredible. Really solid built, super thin! ( I actually cant stop looking at this **** notebook....)
3. Its packed with stunning applications that you would have to pay tons of money for on windows
4. I love the magnetic charger, that prevents tons of issues that regular notebooks have with the inside part becoming loose after a few years of pulling out and putting in the cable.
5. The trackpad, swipingin, clicking, tapping... **** its beautiful!
6. Their magic mouse ( i got that too ) is just magic!
7. Everything is so much more organized, streamline and cleaner ( great for business )
I am sure i will find many more things, but for now... if you are thinking of getting one and cant understand why they are so **** expensive.
There are lots of reasons why. I wont give you the speal about BMW or such as I know there are lots of great PCs out there, but it really cant be compared its in a class of its own and once you have it... well i honestly cant see myself going back
In fact... next in line is replacing my desktop  ( but i may wait till next year for that )
thanks
Oh and.... sorry mac guys for yanking your chain and thanks for being patient with me previously
As they say once you have mac... you wont go back!

Actually, they're not so expensive, considered from the standpoint of value. I purchased new computers, but the old ones - one of which I've kept close tabs on since its OS9 days - still work fine. There are a few excellent Windows laptops, true, but every time a friend has used one, he says it died after three or four years.
Unibody construction and the '09 trackpad changed it for me, and maybe Spotlight.

  • Is it possible to run apps concurrently in different "Users" on Mac Pro in latest OSX?

I wish to continuously monitor different folders in Dropbox for "input transactions" destined for my
applications on my Mac Pro, where each Dropbox folder represents different input types from different
sources. It would speed up the process significantly if my monitor program could run concurrently from
each of several defined "Users" on my Mac Pro with OSX.

Thank you for your response. Let me give you some more facts on my situation.
My monitor, running on a Mac Pro, reads folders owned by my clients, where the folders are shared
thru Dropbox with my service. So, yes, my monitor is "reading" different Dropbox member's folders looking for
"input" files to my service. My monitor is programmed (with a list) of the various clients' folders
names in which to search. Obviously, there is some number of clients (and folders) where the monitor
begins to take several seconds (too long) to scan and service, merely due to the sheer number of folders being
scanned. So, if I could create a second User on the Mac Pro, and run another (copy) of the monitor
programmed with another unique list of folders NOT being serviced by the monitor in the first
User, and (here's the problem) both monitors were running CONCURRENTLY, then the total number of
folders (and clients) being serviced could possibly almost double. Then, I could add a third User, then
a fourth, etc. to handle even more clients and folders.
The giant problem here is, each separate User does NOT run concurrently with the others, certainly where
all are logged in and "running". Actually, it appears OSX only executes programs within ONE user at a
time: the one in focus at the time. It so happens that OSX multitasks within that one User the differently-named
programs quite well; but OSX does not (continue to) execute anything in other Users, until another
User is manually switched to. Therefore, in my case, I can only run one monitor in one User at a time, thus ruining any benefit I might otherwise achieve IF OSX ran programs concurrently in multiple Users, another form of multitasking that apparently OSX is not designed to do. My monitors run with Excel VBA, which becomes the name of that program within
one User, so I am limited to running only 1 monitor per User. (Groups don't help.). On the other hand, It might help a little if
my monitor somehow could switch between OSX Users programmatically, rather than manually...I do not want
to sit at my Mac Pro constantly and manually fast-switching between Users to even attempt to solve my problem. Rather, I want
the software to run concurrently 24/7 unattended to successfully provide the service promised to all.
So, because there are lots of brilliant folks that know a lot about MACs and OSX, certainly more than me, I
am wondering IF someone knows how to get OSX to multitask across more than one User at a time, which
would solve my dilemma?? Maybe it's just not possible, I don't know...
Also, would OSX Server edition maybe be better suited to solve my problem? I know nothing about the Server's capability.
I would also hate to have to run Windows on my Mac Pro to solve this. Would VMware/Fusion work here?
Thank you again for taking the time to help...

  • Bootcamp - Windows 8.1 - Mac Pro (Late 2013) -- ATI Driver Crash

    Hi All,
I have a open case with Apple as well on this but i can not seem to locate any information on this issue on the web at all.
    Case: 601052633
Basically, we received a new Late 2013 Mac Pro, and out of the box proceeded to install bootcamp and windows 8.1.
After the install and the bootcamp drivers are installed the screen starts to display lines and the ATi drivers eventually crash.
If we uninstall the ATI drivers the screen is returned to normal and windows uses the generic drivers, however the graphics performance is degraded.
If we install the latest ATI drivers (downloaded directly from the ATI webpage) the display issues reoccur.
If left to run its path the screen becomes unreadble and eventually the system bluescreens.
To recap all the things I have done:
Straight out of the box we started the boot camp install. We use the latest Windows 8.1 Media.
Once the process is completed the PC reboots as normal and we install windows on the “BOOTCAMP” partition.
Windows installs without issue and when the bootcamp drivers window pop’s up it starts its install. At the “Chipset” drivers install the window starts to flicker, this appears to be normal but afterwards the screen shows “lines” on it. (these lines can be seen on image below)
Once windows is booted the lines remain and progressively gets worse. Image below shows the ATI Criver crash and the blue screen. This takes 2-5 seconds. And depends on how much you move on the screen.
Screen capture (shown Below) shows the issues, even with screen capture the issue is recorded.
If we uninstall the ATI display drivers the issue disappears.
    Process of tests:
Install Bootcamp windows 8.1 on Mac pro 2013 out of the box – Issue recorded
Remove Bootcamp and update firmware on Mac.
Install Bootcamp windows 8.1 on Mac Pro 2013 – Same issue.
Updated ATI Drivers using ATI drivers off ATI website – Same issue
Uninstalled ATI Drivers – 2 Generic Microsoft video cards detected – issue removed but video performance degraded.
Updated Bootcamp Drivers – ATI drivers reinstalled – Issue returned
Removed bootcamp, restored system to factory settings via web install.
Installed Bootcamp windows 8 on Mac Pro 2013 – Same issues
Removed bootcamp restored System to default
Tried installing windows 7 – not supported
Installed Windows 8.1 and ran screen captures and diagnostics.
We have also tried using different display ports, Different display adaptors, Different monitors.
    Mac OS is not affected.
Note Mac is “out of the box”, Windows is a next next next install. No changes or software is installed.
    Any support would be appreciated.
    Cheers
    Steffen.
    It Manager.

I had this exact same issue and had been hunting it down since i first received my Mac Pro back in May 2014. I researched the problem all over the place but I have no idea why i did not find this post, or in fact why Apple techs did not find this post either.
Bottom line: In my case I have pretty much proved this was a problem with the AMD FirePro D300 video card/s. They basically can't cope with Windows graphics needs.
I have a new Mac with D500 cards, and now the problem is almost completely gone. I can recreate if i run certain situations and a screen saver. Upon refresh, there is a chance the card will crash, but showing a slightly different outcome.
Having read the prior posts, the D700 may also have the same issue??
Longer story and background: I am not exactly an expert, but i did try many different things and probably spent in excess of 200 hours onto tech support and installing, reinstalling, trying different monitors, trying different software. Eventually i was so frustrated and in tears with this issue.
The major problem over all this time was the constant response from Apple that this was not an Apple issue since the Mac OS was not showing any issues.
I was at the time a new Mac convert, my brother had purchased the 'awesome' machine for me as a birthday gift, with the goal that we could play a specific game together. My disappointment in Apples inability to recognize or even attempt to recognize that this was related to the hardware in the Mac itself was constant and ongoing.
My final visit to the Apple store to again visit the 'Genius' bar came up yet again with the most senior tech in the store telling me that there were no problems identified with the hardware and that this was not their issue. Totally frustrating. I was rather hoping, in the good tradition of true geeks, that this would have been a challenge to hunt down. I was pretty sure they trusted me that this was not a standard Windows issue, and thus was hoping they would switch out individual pieces of components (video cards being my first choice) to see if that the problem repeated. Nope, didn't want to do it.
My response was to threaten with legal action - not something i enjoyed doing, plus that i would NEVER buy an Apple product again. Since I was a new business client, this may have had an impact.
This wonderful Manager at the store agreed that he wanted to take the hardware out of the equation and see if I still had the issue. So he, amazingly, agreed to refund in full for the machine and I could order a new one.
As i was convinced this was hardware related, since I had the Quad core, D300's, 12 gig machine and my brother had the top of the range six processor, D500s, 16gig memory machine which did NOT have this issue, running identical software, when i reordered the Mac Pro, I bumped it up to the D500s (still Quad core) and 16gig of memory (also had the 1TB drive partitioned 40/60 in bootcamps favor).
I tentatively installed windows after a couple of days of normal Apple usage (software updates included).
I then hammered the system with the same software and installs.
Its been up and running for perhaps 2-3 weeks now, and I have not seen the issue at all, other then when i had screen saver running and 4 instances of the game running (Everquest for those of you who are interested - but the software is almost irrelevant, since i have had this issue using internet explorer or Chrome).
So..  I urge Apple to review this issue with the D300s and either remove them from the configuration options or resolve the issue. One of the powerful selling things for this wonderful machine is its ability to run Windows in native mode. I like it because I also want to get into App Development, so the dual option boot option is just what i wanted.
Responding to us poor Windows installers with 'not my problem' simply isn't good enough and should never have been something i had heard.
All good now, I am happy with the end result, but I would like Apple to recognize this IS AN ISSUE THEY NEED TO ADDRESS.
I apologize if my technical knowledge is not a strong as it might need to be in relaying this information to you guys, but hopefully it all makes sense.

  • I already bought mac book pro last year but it can't view windows just like mac pro for education. I want to make like it. How?

I already bought mac book pro last year but it can't view windows just like mac pro for education. I want to make like mac pro for education How?

First, if you have a MACBOOK PRO (a laptop), you should post in that forum. MAC PRO (desktop) and Macbook Pro are different things, so when you use those terms interchangeably, it's impossible to know what you're talking about.
Second, even guessing that you have a laptop, I still have no idea what your question means. Are you trying to load Microsoft Windows on it? Every Mac can run Windows using either Boot Camp or Parallels/Fusion/VMWare solutions. Please explain in more detail what you're trying to do, and we'll try to help. But post in the Macbook Pro forum if you're talking about a laptop.

  • I just installed lion on several machines.  They all show air drop in the finder window except my mac pro.

I can't get air drop to appear on my finder window in my Mac Pro.  What to do?

The Mac Pro is probably too old. Please read Apple's article about Airdrop at:

Hello i would like instal windows in my mac pro retina but i don't have boot camp

What version of OS X are you running on your MBPr?
If you open Applications > Utilities, you should see Boot Camp Assistant in that folder.
That is the utility which will create the partition into which you can install Windows that you have purchased from Microsoft.

  • Install windows 7 on mac pro raid

I have just got a mac pro with raid (3 1tb drives), they are set to raid 0 and I am trying to install windows 7 64 bit, 32bit if I really have too but it will not find the drivers on the disk the mac made for the windows installation. Where do I find the drivers, and can I set up for raid 0 and have mac+windows installed?
    Dave

Mac OS X software RAID is implemented in software that loads when the Mac OS X kernel is operational.
Mac OS X software RAID cannot be used for Windows. If you want your Windows Boot Volume on a RAID, put it on a separate drive (which is good advice in general) and use a Windows-only RAID solution.
Many users find that the OS (Mac or Windows) does not benefit much from RAID -- having multiple bootable backups is a better solution. For performance, having a separate Boot Volume reduces competition for the data Drives, and speeds up your computer considerably.

Other Mac users did reply back saying it opened fine.

I wish I could have told my sister about this as she could not open my homepage back before my new iWeb site. She now can open my site without the yet in case denial window does appear = I thank you.
I think my iWeb site works as Noone has said otherwise from any platform etc...

I do agree that should not have to be a consideration for any users so i agree that it would be great if Apple could allow simplicity to run seemlessly.
I have had this problem since Homepage, and here is
what has worked for me. I send out the link, and
then for PC users I send the link with "<" after the address (without quotation
    marks. e.g., <http://site.com>).
I also put a note that if that doesn't work, to just
copy and paste the link into a browser. With that I
have only had 1 person say they still can't open.
Everyone else gets it to work.
It's a lot to do and seems like a hassle, but you get
    used to it.
    Hope this helps!

PS - APPLE! When are you going to fix this??! It
seems like such a small thing yet you guys have been
    stumped for YEARS on this!

  • Black Screen for Install of Windows 7 on Mac Pro Early 2008

I have a mac pro early 2008 with lion 10.7.4 and boot camp 4.0.3 I think... anyways the problem I have is when I am in boot camp, and configure the HDD partition, then the machine reboots... when it reboots and starts up boot from the install DVD (legit retail copy) I just get a black screen on both monitors. No curser, nothing just a black screen, same as I get when the machine is off! the little white LED lights are on and nothing...
I can hear the DVD spinning up and down a few times then that just stops too...
I have tried resetting the PRAM, pulling the power and watch battery inside for a few minutes, I tried the "fix" that is online for the imac problem with the answerfile and got no different resutls with anything, still the same probelm.
I have the OEM ATI Radeon video card 512MB.
    * as a side note, I was never able to download the windows support drivers prior to trying the install... I tried and tried for the last two days so this time I "unchekced" that box and just went for the install...
Any help will be greatly appriciated, thank you :-)
    Mike

Hey Hatter, I know this is a little old but I've just picked up this thread and I wonder if you can help. I get the same issue as:

I get that dreaded black screen following partioning of my drive on the Windows 7 install on Mavericks on a Macbook Pro late-2008 (MBP5,1) but I'm at a loss to work out where the solution lies in the thread! ;-(
To date I've spent about 5 days going back and forth trying all sorts of combinations, including the obvious:
    - removing bootcamp 5 and reverting to 4
    - installing the imac drivers
A HUGE thanks if you can offer any help as I'm at the end of my tether...!

BTW I'm working off USB with 32 bit Windows 7 ISO

  • Problem with Windows 7 on Mac Pro 3,1

I am trying to install Windows 7 to a seperate HDD an on Mac Pro 3,1 and have run into a problem getting it to work.
To start with I had a 500GB HDD which was partitioned using Bootcamp assistant and had OSX 10.6,8 and Windows 7 installed on it and worked fine. I decided to purchase 2x 120GB SSDs (1 for OSX and 1 for WIndows) and also purchased a Sata III PCI-e card to go with them. I started by putting in the card and connecting the two drives, booting into OSX from my exsisting HDD and cloning it to the 1st SSD using CCC. Everything went perfect. OSX booted off the new SSD and speeds were amazing (Getting around 448MB/s Read and 395MB/sec Write).
Since everything was working I then removed the HDD and once again booted up to make sure it worked. Once booted I then proceded to run Bootcamp assistant and chose to use the entire 2nd SSD. It formated the SSD to fat32 and named it BOOTCAMP as usual then rebooted to the Windows CD. WIndows would see the SSD but would fail to install giving me some error code so I went to the forums to look it up and everyone was saying that you must disconnect any other HDDs while installing Windows so i disconnected the OSX SSD and once again ran the WIndows setup. I went through the entire setup procedure just fine and began runing the Windows updates and installing the bootcamp drivers. Everything was fine, Windows was booting fast and everything was working so I shutdown and reconnected the OSX drive and booted up holding the Option key and selected to boot to OSX. Once booted I then shutdown and booted holding Option once again but this time chose Windows but to my surprise, Windows would no longer boot. I disconnected the OSX SSD and same result, WIndows was no longer bootable. I then tried to do a startup repair, windows recovery and even went through the entire windows setup again. Every time I reconnet the OSX drive and boot to OSX it kills the Windows boot. I then tried again but this time removing the Sata II card and pluging the SSDs into the normal HDD bays. Same result. After reinstalling Windows agin it once more killed the Windows boot when I booted to OSX.
After all that I decided to try just using one SSD and letting Bootcamp assistant partition it and install WIndows that way. Same result. After booting OSX after finishing Windows it kills the Windows boot.
Am I doing something wrong? My old HDD that has windows on it still works fine and its from the same Windows CD. I even purchased Lion after all that, upgraded my OSX drive and retried everything and still not owrking.
Can anyone please help? I am very fustrated and can't understand whats wrong.

Well I finally got it running smooth again, turns out that one of the windows updates changed the way the licensing works and for some odd reason it no longer works on Mac, go firgure lol. I ended up giving my windows 7 license to a friend who just built a PC so it worked fine for him but I am out $139 .
To get it working again I had to take my Mac Pro to work and let the IT guys install the Enterprise Edition and activate it againist the companies activation server. Works great now but it means I will have to take it to work every 6 months now for activation
I wish Microsft would stop making things so hard for us Mac guys.

  • Windows 7 on Mac Pro, Local Access Only, No Internet

Installed Windows 7 on my 2.66 Quad Mac Pro. Whenever I boot, the network adapter icon in the traybar comes up with a yellow slash through it that says "Local Access Only" Looked into troubleshooting, turning off Network power management, turning off IP6, etc... No fixes. I can browse my local area network but not the internet.
When I boot in safe mode with networking, the error does not show on the network taskbar icon and I can browse the internet just fine.
Here's the temporary fix that I found works every time in standard boot mode.
    1. Assign a manual IP address to the network adapter. (192.168.1.160). (make sure the IP is in your DHCP Scheme and the IP is available (no other devices using that IP)
    2. It will automatically assign a subnet (255.255.255.0)
    3. Close the networking window.
    4. Right click on the network icon with the yellow through it in the task bar and click "Troubleshoot problems"
    5. It will come up quickly with a fix (saying you should not be using a manual IP). Click "Apply Fix" then windows 7 will put the computer back to DHCP Mode.
    6. Try it now. Everything should be working.
No permanent fix on this yet but when a new boot camp 3.1 network driver comes out, hopefully it should fix it. If anyone else has a permanent solution, it would be appreciated.

My thought - because the only issues I've had personally with Vista/7 have had to do with modems and routers, and went away once I upgraded those. Sometimes there are firmware updates to deal with new OS.
Your post didn't seem to mention wired/wireless or modem and router in place.
you might want to look for an Intel driver. Also, you must have had network to install and update Windows 7, look to rollback the network driver if possible, or uninstall + restart and let Windows reinstall a device driver.

  • Install windows xp and windows 7 on mac pro

I have Mac pro. I already installed windows xp on it but now i need to install windows 7 as well. So i need to have 3 os on my mac pro Mac os 10.6.2, Windows xp, and Windows 7. I m trying bootcamp (v3.0) to create one more partition for windows 7 but it looks like it is asking to format Windows xp partition first and then create new for windows 7. Can i have 3 os on Mac pro?? if yes how do i install them?
    Any help is highly appreciate.
    Thanks

    @The hatter
I tried installing windows 7 by creating partitions for it but some how my windows XP got overwrote in the process. Actually my mac pro has Mac os x and windows xp (installed using  Bootcamp) and i created one more partitions for windows 7 (FAT 32). During installation the first error is file system error as windows 7 installer expect NTFS for partitions so i formatted FAT32 and installed windows 7 on it..
Can you suggest me any other way to install Windows 7 along with XP and MAC os x
    Thanks

  • I want to install windows on my mac pro but my superdrive is dead...

I have a 2008 Mac Pro (Intel) running 10.10.  I'm trying to install windows (8.1) on my machine which I have done several times before (mostly XP and windows 7).  I've created a bootable USB drive using bootcamp but my machine won't boot from it or recognize it on startup.  From research it doesn't seem that machines that came with super drives will allow this.  Since my super drive is dead I need a way to install windows without it - buying a new one would only be used to install windows.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I can have the USB show up either with or without pulling the OS X hardrive.  When I try to launch it however nothing happens although the USB flickers forever showing activity.  I've tried creating the usb from both .cdr and .iso files with no difference.
I looked at the link you posted and it seems that the OP was only able to install windows from his DVD player.  I really hope there is another way and appreciate your help.
