Why is it that everytime a User has a problem with Home Sharing you either just refer it to the standard trouble shooting procedures or totally ignore the questions. It look like Apple is having serious issues with Home Sharing with the Apple TV device so where does the poor user go from hear. Please prove me wrong and not ignore this post.

Homesharing works just fine for me and most other users, if its not working for you, it's something you need to fix not Apple.
Why do I start out by directing someone to the standard trouble shooting guide. Because that's what troubleshooting guides are for, where would you start.
Why do I ignore some posts about homesharing. Any homesharing issues are almost certainly related to settings or problems with the users network, when someone starts a question by explaining it's not their network, I ignore it because it's quite clear they are not going to accept it's a network problem.

You can't use your computers Internet connection to update your phone from the phone itself. If you want to use the computers Internet connection to update your phone you must update it through iTunes.

@Winston - MPEGStreamclip

I think I mentioned before I tend to use Handbrake to convert DSLR HD video snippets for AppleTv at 720p 24fps (source 1080p 24fps) and it works well but I can only batch individual clips. Also I struggle to push conversions beyond 5Mbps but note you frequently manage higher.
Is this using MPEGStreamclip?
I've just added about 20 native clips to MPEGStreamclip and output a 4.5Mbps h264 file using multipass, and automatic keyframes, but it took I guess around 4 hours to render under 20 mins of video on my Mac Pro 8 core 3GHz (it's not utilising much CPU power).
To be honest the resultant video looks poor on my monitor.
Do you use this for conversion or rely on FCP/Compressor?
If you use MPEGStreamclip would you mind sharing some settings that 'push the envelope' bitrate wise on MPEGStreamclip?
Maybe it's because I'm running on Leopard QT it's so slow rendering from MPEGStreamclip, but I tried Aperture video on Snow Leopard on another boot drive and that was woefully slow, so perhaps not, whereas QT X is much faster and using all cores better.

I don't think it's the frame rate is the problem, just the frames had more compression artefact than I see chucking through Handbrake - problem with that is I can't batch them to end up with a single output file.
I'd considered exporting all the clips quickly as a single AIC file but handbrake won't read that due to the libraries it uses, and I haven't found a good lossless codec (or don't have export access to one it can use) it'll read.

You tube/vimeo aren't downloadable are they, they may also manipulate/convert the files.
I only included that as I thought it was a fair example of the final output some videographers are generating from a stills camera,and I think it's quite impressive despite the conversion for YouTube etc - worth a look at the 720p version there if you didn't get a chance. Slight panning artefact perhaps.
As I use the camera for stills a lot it's quite easy to flick to video and capture quick snippets.
Fully understand, I do the opposite, take the video cam and use its photo settings should I need it.
There's gonna be a lot of convergence in coming years, my HC-3 unfortunately whilst still producing good HD footage is not great for stills.
It's really the relatively slow speed of QT 7 I find annoying as doesn't utilise more than one core well.
Might be a X.5 thing, it seems to use all my cores somewhat equally, although I can't really remember what it did prior to X.5
Last time I had the SL drive installed I ran a file through QT X and it flew using all cores but was very slow on QT 7 as was MPEGStreamclip from memory. Seemed to be that the processes that were frame serving the QT engine were just very slow.
It's a refurbished 2008 Mac Pro 2x3Ghz quad core with 14GB RAM (2x2, 2x2, 2x2, 2x1 - actually wondering if the 2x1 is a bad apple here, though not sure there's be much performance gain having 8x2GB RAM).
Could be the same as mine or maybe even better spec. Only requirement is that RAM is paired, so your 2 x 1 GB sticks shouldn't be an issue, although I've heard some say highest capacity should be be in A1/A2 and so on but mine isn't and I've no intention of changing it. Mine's 1/1, 1/1 and 4/4
I think it's probably the same as yours. As I say I waited for the 2009 models and thought crikey they're expensive - the 4 core machines had better processor speeds so would have been better for single tasking apps (still the majority), but I was put off by their more limited memory upgradability unless sticking in relatively expensive 4GB DIMMS to begin with.

Your telling me, I usually get the top model when I purchase assuming it will be longer before I outgrow it, priced one up the other day and got to £ 5,500 pretty quickly
As far as mpegstreamclip goes what quality did you set it at, will likely get overridden by max bitrate but always worth doing, I usually have mine at 90.
What did you use in the fps field, did you use better down sampling and uncheck all the interlacing options.
Left fps blank. quality was greyed out. Thinking of it I had QT export selected rather than h264, and tweaked the codec to h264 in the QT dialogue.

As Winston Churchill wrote, however you might want to do a factory reset on the Apple TV.
This way all information pertaining to your daughter will be removed from the device. Specifically if see was sign into any of the streaming service, Netflix, Hulu, etc. her credentials will still be associated with this Apple TV, doing a factory reset will remove all that and make it as if you purchased the device and just plugged it in.

How do I merge my Itunes account with my Icloud account

Hi Readers!
I bought a Macbook Pro Retina today but I am running into a registration issue with Itunes and Icloud.
When I try to register the Macbook I have to put in my Itunes account (name: mflentge), because of the use of Icloud I have to put in an e-mailadress to register Icloud to my Itunes account.
Unfortunately my main e-mailadress already has an Icloud account attached to it, so I'm not able to register this e-mailadress.
I would very much like to use I-cloud and Itunes from the same Itunes account (mflentge), and it being connected to my main e-mailadress.
My question:
How can I merge my Itunes and Icloud account?
There are no important purchases or data on either of the accounts, so I don't mind deleting one if that means I can use my Apple ID + my main e-mailadress as one account.

My main problem with dropping my Icloud account is that my Icloud account is registered under my main e-mail adres.
Can I use my current ICloud account to be my Itunes account aswell?
Also i've been thinking to switch to the @me.com e-mailadress, are there any known limitations on the use of this e-mail (I have a Android Phone for instance, will I be able to set up an Apple e-mail account on it?).

my tv is a widescreen HDTV. it has a DVI-D port and RCA red and white audio inputs. i can purchase a HDMI to DVI-D cable. the only issue that i have to sort out is the audio. so, what converter do i need to convert from digital audio to analog?

How to set up a new apple e-mail address when already have an existing Apple ID

Thank you for taking a look at my query - I have searched many posts but not found a specific answer to my question - so please help!
My dilemma:
I am in effect running everything smoothly - I am already on iCloud and have an @me.com mail address.
The problem arises in that I need to change my name (due to a divorce) and hence my e-mail address - I would like to use my maiden name for obvious reasons!
So what have I tried?:
I have set up a new Apple ID using a 'hotmail' address, as you need an existing address to set an ID, but would actually like a new 'apple' address. How do I do this? Since I have registered all my devices (iMac, iPad 3 and iPhone 3GS) with iCloud already using my married name ID it seems I am unable to get another appleID? Is this true? Is there a way around this?
Concerns:
I have many communications with lawyers and ex and various other things I would like to keep on my existing apple ID/mail account (and also itunes etc) I still need to be able to access this information. I am happy to keep this apple ID active at the same time as having the new ID if this is possible on all the same devices? Currently however I do not know how to do this, i.e. run two mail accounts through iCloud OR ideally transfer my info to the new ID - however from reading around I believe this latter (logical) option may be impossible?
So:
... I need a knight (or maiden) in shining armour to help me understand my options, answer the Q's above and provide the steps I have to follow to do this as I am no IT guru! And as there are many similar Qs without a clear answer I'm sure you will gain lots of points!

OK, so I realised I was still within my 90days of being able to get support from Apple due to recent iPad3 purchase.
So between what I have gleaned from this forum and what I have learnt from the support call here I hope is a comprehensive one stop shop answer to the question... "How do I get another Apple e-mail address ?" It's not straight forward but bear with me as you will get a result (also if anyone with IT prowess can offer further advice or clarification please do reply to this so we keep all info in the same place)... right - we shall begin:
First a few points to bear in mind/wise words that I wish I was aware of before:
You preferably do not want more than one Apple ID so that syncing etc is straight forward. SO create an e-mail address that you will be happy to have no matter what, whether you are married/divorced (and yes it unfortunately could happen...) etc...
So...
1. First go to www.myinfo.apple.com, change your country as required and click on manage your account. Log-in. Should go straight to your Name, ID and e-mail tab.
2. OK you are now presented with one of two scenarios....
a) If your AppleID and primary e-mail address is a me.com (or mac.com) then you are unlikely to have an edit option next to this line - follow point 3. Another ID has to be generated, and unfortunately (as Winston Churchill above rightly pointed out, the problem that you will have on the whole is that any purchases you make from the iTunes Store under your previous account, will be inaccessible on many of your devices. - IF however all you wanted is a new e-mail address and you are happy to keep running your old ID at the same time - there is a way around this .... read on to point 3)
b) If your AppleID and primary e-mail address is not a me.com (or mac.com) then - follow point 4. This is the better option to have, hop skip and jump with glee as you will in effect have the same ID account and syncing will not be an issue. But note that your new ID will not be editable going forward so head my words of wisdom above.
NB. If you already have more than one ID and one of the 'Apple ID and primary e-mail' is editable i.e. 2b) then choose this option to change as it is simpiler to manage.
3. OK lots of steps here and explanations:
i) You need to create another Apple ID - there are two ways of doing this a) if you go to your iphone or ipad settings > iCloud > delete your account (Don't worry you are effectively only signing out and not deleting) (you'll be given an option what to do with your contacts) > The page will then give you an option to create a new Apple ID.... follow the steps, and you will get a new me.com AppleID and primary e-mail address.
b) If you do not have an iphone or ipad - use your computer: Go to sytem preferences > icloud > sign out of account (again you will be given an option to keep contacts on the computer etc. do what is appropriate for you). An iCloud window should then pop up - and there is an option to 'Create an Apple ID'... follow the steps, in 2nd step (after date of birth input) go for the free iCloud option and do not use an existing e-mail address (e.g. hotmail or gmail)... as it then gets more complicated (I did go down this route as I didn't know any better - so I can explain if you wish to know - just ask) - continue with the steps and you will get a new me.com AppleID and primary e-mail address.
ii) Now assuming you have an itunes account and other devices... and you will want to sync everything across devices... then ensure you log back into your OLD account and use this as your main account on all devices. This will keep all things synced between devices with no problems.
iii) To get your new e-mail account active go to all your devices and computer and just add the new me.com address as another account:
a) on iphone and ipad: settings > mail, contacts, calendars > "add account"
b) on computer assuming you use mail: Mail>preferences>account information> hit the '+' under the left hand account box and fill in the details... You will then effectively have two mail boxes running in mail - your previous and new one. What I have noticed is that you can drag and drop (which will copy) mailboxes you created in your old account into your new account - which is great as you can keep the stored messages to hand and effectively you can taper down use of the old account (or use as you wish) over time and eventually not notice the old account is in the background.
Hey presto you have a new e-mail address AND your devices are syncing itunes, photostream etc...
4) So - much better option....
i) create a new Apple ID as per point 3i) above.
ii) go back to www.myinfo.apple.com, change your country as required and click on manage your account. Log-in with old ID. Under Apple ID and primary e-mail adress - click edit and now insert your new me.com Apple ID. This will now be both your ID and primary e-mail address. This is where my knowledge (gleaned from this Forum) stops on this option - as unfortunately it did not apply to me. But I think it will get you where you want!

Apple TV + HDTV Problem

Hello all,
I'm having an issue w/ our Apple TV and I'd like to see if anyone else can help.
We have a 40GB Apple TV w/ the current firmware 2.4.
We had a Samsung 42" Plasma 1080i/720p HDTV for a little over two years. We bought the Apple TV 6 months ago and every couple of days, the TV would fail to recognize the Apple TV--it would just sit there w/ a black screen, dead, and no picture. Rebooting would help for a little while but the only sure-fire fix was to unplug it, and plug it back in. This issue happened on average once a week. I had done 2 factory restores on the unit and it made no difference.
Our Samsung TV XY panel died so we were able to get it replaced under the insurance plan we had on it, and went with a JVC 42" LCD 1080p HDTV. Coincidentally, this TV has an iPod dock in the front of it as well, and works great w/ our 5th gen iPod nano (as well as iPhones)
The same issue that affected the Samsung Plasma also happens on the JVC (even after a 3rd factory restore). However, on this TV set, if I change source (ie. HDMI1, HDMI2, HDMI3) or turn the TV off/on, the TV cannot recognize the Apple TV at all. I took it to the Apple Store @ Brea Mall, and they said they had seen this before, and offered to replace it. A few days later, I picked up the replacement Apple TV, took it home an hooked it up. Sure enough, same issue.
I have two different brands of HDMI cable (Philips and Pure|AV), as well as 3 other HDMI devices (PS3, Scientific Atlanta HD DVR, Xbox 360) that each work/worked fine with both the previous TV (Samsung) and the current TV (JVC). The only one that has an issue is the Apple TV.
I contacted AppleCare and they said to take it back to the store and ask them to test it w/ their TV set on TV (a Pioneer). The repair tech at the Brea store tested it and sure enough, it had the exact same issue on their TV that it did on mine--when he changed/cycled the sources, the Apple TV (the 2nd one) would not show a picture when put back on the same port. The repair tech offered to replace it but I asked that he just document it and I will contact AppleCare (that's what the rep @ Applecare told me to do).
AppleCare sent me out a 3rd unit (which I currently have) and it is also having the same issue as the previous two, except this one has a very-VERY-very dim LED light on the front (almost not on). We did try the 2nd one on Component (1080i) and it worked fine, however, I cannot use it on HDMI with any of them.
According to AppleCare, they are "looking into it" but I have absolutely no idea what that means. This issue is going from weeks to months now and I wish I had never bought this thing, but my wife loves it and wants to get it to work. I'd use Component but it does not output at 1080p as advertised.
Does anyone have any experience with issues like this? Any suggestions? Thank you (in advance)

I just looked through the JVC manual, it mentions no such port--it appears they're all the same. I've tried changing the identifier both as PVR, Bluray Disc, Cable, etc., and no setting makes any difference (I believe it's a simple naming scheme).

Although the symtoms may not be the same, the solution may point to the same problem with some sets HDMI circuitry. The $17 Monoprice adapter solution might be a cheap solution to your problem with the JCV's HMDI circuitry.
Thanks but I'm afraid it's not the same issue I am having; I'm getting no video or audio after I switch source or turn off the TV. If I turn the Apple TV on while the TV is already on, it works until I change the source or power off the TV set. When I power the TV set back on, same issue all over again.

Based on various other reports posted in the forum here, such problems appear to occur more often with certain brands of TVs and amps than others, but, based on my own experiences, I'd have to say the problem rests with the ATV. You wouldn't believe how much angst I've gone through w/ "Apple care" over this. The product specialist I spoke to first said it had to be the TV set (even after I explained it happened on both TVs). When I took it to the store (2nd time) and they replicated it, he finally capitulated that there is definitely a problem w/ the unit.
In your case, if you have an HDMI switch or an A/V amp with HDMI ports, you might try connecting it through that rather than directly to the TV and see if it makes a difference. Given the consistency of your problems, that may be the only way to salvage the situation for the sake of your wife.
Ya no doubt, she's not exactly happy about it not working, and we have a dozen or so iTunes movies we cannot watch on our TV set. I can hook it up via component but it's not what it was billed as (1080p w/ digital HDMI signal). Plus, I have a PS3 which has not had one single problem w/ either TV set (Samsung or JVC)--the 360 hasn't had any issues, nor has our Cable TV DVR box.

How do i transfer photos from camera roll to photostream on my iPad2?

I have 100s of pics on my iPad2 and set up Photostream ages ago, but only 2 pics are on it. I want to transfer all of my photos to Photostream so they appear in iCloud and so I can delete them from iPad2 and free up storage space.
How do I do this?

Account without payment method

I've had my itms account for a few years now and have been quite happy with how I have used it.
Essentially I buy all the tunes and authorise them on my wifes, the 2 kids and the mac in the kitchen.
However I figure it's time they all had their own accounts. I figured I can give 'em an allowance with these vouchers I can buy (don't actually know if you need an account to do this). They also want to redeem some free songs from coke bottles etc (they do need an account for this)
My eldest set up his own account last week.
I've just tried to set up an account for my youngest but can't get past supplying information about how they will pay. There is no option for none.
I really dare not let him use my credit card or have it put on our telephone bill, but I also realise my eldest couldn't have given that information either. My eldest being 16 just grunts when I try to find out what he did.
There is one obvious difference: my eldest used his own non .mac email address and therefore went through the process of creating a new account, my youngest has his own .mac account and isn't allowed to create an account but is required to verify his method of payment.
This all seems a bit odd to me and complicated, so hopefully I have explained well enough.
Basically how do I set up an itms account with a .mac email address without giving payment details so I can give him an allowance and he can redeem free songs

How can I get back deleted contacts from iCloud?

If both phones were syncing contacts with the same account, that's normal. iCloud syncs changes on one devices to all other devices sharing the account.

How do I block my roommate's apple tv from connecting to my macbook pro?

My roommate now has an Apple TV and it is connecting to my macbook pro. Is there a way to completely block the signal and get rid of the apple tv icon on my mac? At first I didn't know what the new icon was on my menu bar, so I opened it up to see if there was a way to disable it. Turns out my screen was broadcasted on to her TV and they could see everything I was doing. Please tell me there is a way to block this completely so I can use my computer and not be afraid that someone can connect to my screen at any time. Thank you.

How to restore Address Book and then add working iCloud Account?

OK i'm going insane trying to resolve this one.... all started with a shed load of Duplicates!
3 devices: MacBook Pro, iMac, iPhone 4S
I finally upgraded the MBP to 10.7.2, the iMac already was and the iPhone was already 5.0.1
I've held off moving to iCloud from Mobile.me because of the 10.6.x MBP
...so now all on the same song sheet, I clicked the upgrade to iCloud from my MBA and all went well!
The MBA pushed 1352 address cards to the iCloud and I only had the iCloud account showing in my Address Book.
My iPhone then happily went iCloud and downloaded ALL the calendars (and I have far too many....I'll clean up soon, promise ;-)
but i hadnt turned on Contact sync for a very good reason.
I DON'T WANT ALL MY CONTACTS ON MY iPHONE!
So having found some advice, it says you have to keep everything you dont want in iCloud, in the On My Mac account
(which I didnt appear to have at that point)
I turned my iMac on and connected to the iCloud, all went well and I again had a single iCloud account in Address Book with 1352 cards
I then went Address Book/Preferences/General/Deafult Account/On My Mac and it generated the empty On My Mac account in the Address Book.
Highlighting ALL my iCloud address cards and dragging them to On My Mac, a successful duplication was made.
Highlighting ALL my iCloud address cards and deleting, all three devices now had NO contacts in the iCloud related accounts (what I wanted)
I then turned on Contact sync on my iPhone and it pushed 186 contacts to the iCloud and in turn to all 3 devices (perfect!)
but then came the fun part....
On my iMac, the On My Mac account had gone from 1352 to over 1900 with loads of duplicates. So I selected ALL deleted and restored from an Address Book backup prior to going iCloud. This began my problem....
if I restore it WIPES the iCloud account from the machine and leaves me with 1352 in On My Mac,
if I try and add an iCloud account it then wants to upload the 1352 into the iCloud which I dont want.
If I delete all, setup iCloud acount first I get the 186 correctly, but the moment I restore from backup it overwrites and I'm again left with On My Mac and no iCloud account
AHHHHHH!
how on earth do I get the working iCloud with 186 (which is perfectly fine on 3 devices) and restore 1352 in ON MY MAC, so my iMac Address Book has two accounts very seperate from each other. I want the 186 on my MacBook Pro and iPhone, but I want an iCloud account with 186 and an On My Mac with 1352 on the iMac

Thanks havinabubble for your assistance. I'm having all sorts of problems with iCloud because we've got iphone 3g's which means the iCloud is working on our mac and ipads but not on our iphones. I've been trying to solve this problem for days and I lost my "on my mac account" along the way. Once I followed your section where you gave directions how to "generate the empty On My Mac account" I was able to re-establish my contacts list on my mac. Your suggestion was very valuable. Thank you.

cheers to Winston Churchill who's post gave me the solution!
with On My Mac selected, highlight and DRAG TO DESKTOP
then highlight ALL and DELETE ALL
add the iCloud account which replaces ALL contacts with the 186 from the iCloud.
select Address Book/Preferences/General/Default Account/On My Mac and it generates the empty On My Mac account in the Address Book.
DRAG the 1352 back into On My Mac account
now have two accounts...

ITunes Library and apple TV

I have recently bought my self
- Mac Mini
- Time Capsule
- Apple TV
My objective is to be able to run the mac mini as a media center for the living room television and the apple tv to have access to the movies in a different room.
The point of the time capsule is to serve as an external disk for Itunes + as a backup
My problem is 2 things:
- I want Itunes to use the timecapsule as the data source as it has more space. This works fine, but every time I restart the mac mini itunes defaults back to the original itunes library!
- When in the middle of sourcing a movie on Apple Tv I can suddenly be in situation that the itunes library no longer is availalbe. I believe the problem might be that TC or Mini hibernates and that Apple Tv no longer can get access
What should I do.

I understood it was on the Apple TV that the OP had duplications rather than in iTunes itself.
could be network related. i'd also try a +power cycle+ of my entire gear. however, let's see how he moved, deleted, and re-added the files.
