  • How can I make Keynote files read-only (eg: to share with students)?

I would like to share some keynote files with students, and I would like to set them up as read-only, so that the students can tap the screen, read my presentation, but not alter it.  I've tried to set the files up as read-only on my iMac desktop, but when I load the file onto my iPad, it's still editable.
Any ideas re: how to make Keynote files read-only?
I've tried to export the files as PDF and load them into iBook, but some of Keynote's basic "build" functions won't work this way.  Specifically, I have files set up with questions and answers (ie - a question appears, and you have to tap the screen to see the answer, but this "build" function seems to disappear when I get it to show up in iBook).
Any ideas how to make Keynote files read-only?  I am happy to use another program, but I want the students to tap the screen in order to see the answer to a question.
    Thanks!

as long as $PATH is set, you shouldn't need to reconnect them (i think).  if you send the list of apps through | awk -F '/' '{print $NF}' | that'll strip the path
/edit: added the "(i think)" part

  • How to make files read only

I want to make files read only.  Any workaround is welcomed.

    ElMagoElGato,
I am glad to give some help but I am still confused because we are having different experiences. I have been able to lock Tables on my mac and have that lock respected in iOS for a long while now. Easy to unlock, impossible to relock.  With the most recent upgrade I can lock tables after tapping the upper left dot to select the whole table and going to "arrange" in the paintbrush.
When you say worksheet are you meaning the entire file? When you say file lock are you meaning password protection? You can see I am confused.

Based on what ElMagoElGato has described, password protecting would be of no value to him. Once the file is accessed, it is in edit mode. Unless I'm really missing something.
Files I have imported from Mac iworks apps with elements locked stay locked for me in iOS. Not sure what the problem is.

  • Read/Write folder, but newly added files Read Only?

Our company uses a server to store a shared logo database and work files, and to transfer data from one user to another. At this point, we do not have any need for Read Only on this server; everything should be Read/Write. That's how it was set up initially, and the permissions were propagated. About a year ago, our old XServe crashed and was replaced with a new XServe. I believe our trouble started there, and has since migrated to our Snow Leopard Server: we have several folders where, if an employee uploads a folder and/or file, those files become Read Only. We have to go to the Get Info for that folder and fix the permissions each time. This has to happen up to 20 or so times a day, and I'm the only one who has server access to fix it; it also seems to be affecting more and more folders. I'm not in IT, so this is a little beyond me, but I've been working with IT on this (I'm Mac, he's PC). Can anyone offer a suggestion as to how else we can go about permanently setting the permission to Read/Write on all folders? Server Admin hasn't been successful.
    Thanks!

    Hi
+"We have to go to the Get Info for that folder and fix the permissions each time"+
This might be fine for OSX Client but it's not the way to do things on OSX Server. Consider stopping doing this because ultimately you're adding to the problems you're seeing. To reset permissions launch terminal on the server and issue this command:
    sudo chmod -R -N /pathtoshare
Depending on how much data there is as well as the structure (nested folders within nested folders etc) this may take some time. If you're sharing the Volume (hard drive), don't. Share a folder instead. If you have only one share point which is the name of the drive. Create a folder with the same name and move all the data into that folder. Un-share the drive and Re-share the folder.
Once the command has ran, repeat for any other share points you may have. When finished launch Server Admin because this is what you should be using. Select the Server name. Click on the Sharing icon. Select Share Points. Select the share point you're interested in and add desired users or groups into the ACL window. Select Read/Write. Don't fiddle with the POSIX permissions. Cick Save. Click on the small gear wheel and select Propagate Permissions. By default ACL will be ticked. You don't tick anything else. Click save/apply and let it do its stuff. Repeat for any other share points you may have.

  • I go to File get info sharing and it says I have custom info, me read and write, staff read only and everyone read only and I don't know how to change the setti

I am attempting to download an update for Firefox - when attempting to open it tells me to go to File/getinfo and when I look at sharing and Permissions there are three entries, me, staff and everyone - me is Read/write, the others are read only and there is a note that says I have suxtom access but still cannot drag to applications -
how do I unlock this process

Hello mbennjr, if you have problem with update or permissions firefox the better way is to '''download and install the new version'''.
    1. Download a copy of the latest firefox from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
    2. '''Trash''' the current Firefox application to do a clean install.
    3. Install the version that you have downloaded.
Do not select to remove your personal data, your profile data is stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Mac Firefox Profile Folder], so you won't lose your bookmarks or other personal data.

  • "read from measurement file" reads only first line of data

    Hello,
I have a problem when trying to read a .lvm file through "Read from Measurements file" with the following block diagram
Problem: it reads only the first line of data from what I can see in the probe window,.
A part of the lvm file for reference.
I haven't used Labview in a long long time, I'm trying to figure out what I am doing wrong.
    Thanks

Sorry meant to attach the lvm. Here it is. (Actually I had to put it in .txt because the forum wont let me upload a lvm file)
I unfortunately cannot share the full vi that record the data as I am not its owner/creator. I'll try to give as much info as I can with the relevant pictures attached, I hope it allows us to at least have an hint of where the problem might be.
(this is in a while loop)
In the stacked sequence, the other pannels are similar to the one shown here: value read fron a variable, converted to dynamic and a signal attribute is set. The "start recording" control operation is "switch when pressed".
Here are the properties of the set signal attributes
And here are the properties of the "write to measurement file"

  • [SOLVED] How to make file read only and stay?

I'm using gnome 3 and want to make the recently used.xbel file (in .local/share) read-only/locked. I've tried making it read only and it just reverts to normal when something tries to write to it. How do I do this?

  • How do I enable Firefox (3.0.19) to open office documents as read-write vs. read-only?

When opeing any office type document (open office for example) from a webpage/collab folder it always opens as read-only. Is there a setting or attribute to change the behavior to open it as read-write?
I have read-write privileges to the (tmp) directory/folder it saves it to.

Researching further, I've found you can change this behavior very similar to Thunderbird.
    1) Open a new tab
    2) Type "about:config" in the url window
    3) Confirm the security warning
    4) Search for "browser.helperApps.deleteTempFileOnExit" and if you find it, double click it and set the value to False.
    5) If you don't find it, right click into the main area, choose "New" > "Boolean", add "browser.helperApps.deleteTempFileOnExit" as name and choose "False" as value.
As cor-el highlighted if you make edits and don't 'save as' to an appropriate location you risk losing your edits! So beware.
The reason opening as read-write is valuable to me is; I'm in a lot meetings reviewing information (from a central source) in spreadsheets etc... and it's very convenient to be able to change column widths, apply a different 'sort', do a 'data pilot' etc... only for use while I'm in the meeting without having to save the file. My company has tight restrictions on disk space so not having to save the file and then remember to delete it is a big win for me.

  • InDesign lock files, read only permissions...

I've had this strange problem for over a year now, unsure as to why it was happening. Now I've realized what the problem is, but I don't know how to fix it.
We build ads in InDesign. Production, who builds the ads, has basically full control to the ads network drive. Sales, on the other hand, has only read access. They want to print ads out on occasion, but I don't want them to be able to screw the ad up by mistake (they know just enough to get the ad to print).
    Here's the problem...
Someone one sales opens an ad. Well, they don't have create or write permissions (Win 2003 server, XP workstations). So the InDesign lock file is never created. But they do obtain a read lock on the file on a Windows/OS level.
So what happens is, the production staff opens the ad while the sales person opens the ad. There's no lock file, so the production person isn't warned that the file is open. But because there's an OS lock on the ad, the ad opens for the production staff, but it opens as read only.
My first problem is that I don't know how to fix this without giving our sales people full access, which I cannot do. The second problem is that any app that happens to access those files (shadow copy perhaps???) will cause the same headache for the production staff, as there is contention to the file.
So I'm in a catch-22 here. I'm wondering if any of you have been in the same boat and know if there is a work around.
We're using InDesign 3 (CS) on XP.

Or export to PDF every time the ad is updated, and only give them access to the PDFs through Reader - keep them away from InDesign completely. If you are only giving them InDesign to view ads, you could save money on unnecessary InDesign licenses.

  • How to mount a CD-ROM as write protected Read only

    Hello,
I have a Mac OS X Snow Leopard version.
What I want to do is the following:
    1. Burn a .cdr image onto CD-R
    2. Go To Terminal and Locate the optical medium drive
I forgot what the command is.
    3. As the CD-R is recognized as a CD-ROM or in UDF format, I want to
perform the following command using hdiutil.
    4. Have it mounted as write protected and read only from the optical medium drive.
    5. The next step is to use the same commands, save it as a bash file scripting file, and have it burned onto another CD-R or DVD-R.
If anybody can understand what I'm talking about, please help me do so.
Thanks for your responses in advance.

I am trying to be as clear as I can since I have a communication impediment.

  • File - read only

I create new file using only "Write Characters To File".
(I don't want user to see dialog to choose file name, etc.)
I create .CSV file, and I want to set file as read only for any
other applications except LabView. When MS Excel opens this file
LabView is unable to write data to it.
Is it any simple way to solve this ? Or di I must use .vi's that show dialog
    to chose file and dir.
    -jcz-

When a file has been marked as "read only", then Excel open it in read only mode, and the file remains accessible to other applications. What you have to do is to switch the "Acces Rights"(in the advanced file function subpalette) between $80 and $100, to respectively unlock and lock the file, at each write operation in LabVIEW.

  • Microsoft files Read-only when sharing between two Macs

I'm trying to share Excel files between my Macbook and my iMac. The files are located on my macbook and I've given read/write permission to the folder containing the files. When I try to open the files on my iMac they open as read only. This happens with Excel, Word and Power Point files.
How do I configure the file sharing so I can open Microsoft files without them being Read only.
I'm using Office:mac 2004 and both the Macbook and iMac are running OS X (10.5.6)

There have been occassions where I have wanted to transfer something from the MBP to the Mini or vice-versa over wi-fi and have encountered problems. I suspect this is because I am using the same user account and they get confused.
Could you please explain, what kind of problems exactly you encountered? Error messages? Corrupted files? And why do you think the problem is caused by the same user profiles?
Like markwmsn I have no problem with sharing using the same account name on all my macs. Only since upgrading to Mt. Lion I usually use AirDrop to send single files. That saves the trouble to copy the files to a public folder.
Do both your macs support Air Drop?

  • PowerPoint Makes File Read-only After Saving

    Hello all,
A couple of end users have encountered the above problem. They make changes to pptx files and after the file saves, the file becomes read only (says so on the program window). If they are not paying attention, then any other changes they make to the file
need to be saved to another file, which needless to say, is very annoying.
They have saved the file, file becomes read-only, then if they close the file and open it back up, it's fine; they can edit and save.
It happens sporadic.  Could it be an autosave happening at the same time? Any others experiencing this?
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Hi
    Thank you for using
Microsoft Office for IT Professionals Forums.
From your description, I understand that you want to allow changes by more than one user at the same time in PowerPoint . If
there is any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.
In Microsoft PowerPoint 2010, multiple authors can simultaneously change the same presentation stored on a server.
The new co-authoring functionality in Microsoft Office 2010 makes it possible for multiple users to work productively on the same
document without intruding on one another’s work or locking each other out.
More detailed information you can refer to this article

Please take your time to try the suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If anything
is unclear or if there is anything I can do for you, please feel free to let me know.
    Hope that helps.
