Toast Servo Failure

Ok. So I have a unibody macbook pro and Toast 10 and suddenly a few months ago it will not burn a dual layer dvd. I've spent a lot of time with the Genius teams in my area and we cannot figure out why I constantly get a "Spindle Servo Error".
First, all software is up to date, and I have done everything from archive & installs, erase & installs on my computer, and reinstallations of toast have gone to ridiculous quantitates.
Second of all the Genius team has already replaced both my logic board AND my optical drive and it hasn't changed the result.
Now for the really weird, external disc burners burn these DVD-DL Video discs just fine. I have tried every brand of disc I can get my hands on (has gotten expen$ive)
Also an identical Macbook Pro will burn these movie discs with the same copy of Toast.
And for the extremely weird... my own internal drive WILL burn DVD-DL as long as its not video.
What is going on here?

I experience kind some strange problems with my MacBook Pro unibody. I try to burn a DVD-R DL and gets a servo error from Toast. It is even hard to load a empty DVD-R DL in the Mac. I can play CD:s, burned DVD-R:s and purchased DVD DL movies with no problems at all.
I made a DVD+R DL in my Mac Pro at work, and it wont mount in my MacBook Pro. But in my wifes MacBook Pro it mounts and run.
A empty Verbatim DVD-R DL doesn't spin up properly and gets ejected. I once succeded to mount it and started to burn a copy of a img-file in Toast at lowest speed (2x), but got this SERVO ERROR again and the disk failed.

  • DVD burning issue: Focus servo failure

In an attempt to burn a DVD-R using Toast Titanium 9, I finally get:
    *The drive reported an error*
    *Sense key = Hardware error*
    *Sense code = 0x09,0x02*
    *Focus servo failure*
    HELP!

You can always reboot, repair permissions etc., though this is a hardware error reported by the drive that probably won't help . It cannot hurt to try new media, not a new disk of the same brand but a new brand. Try Verbatim DVD +R. If this error persists you need it fixed.
Do you get the same error using a burn folder and not Toast? With a CD-R?

  • Hardware error - Tracking servo failure - what does it mean?

Thanks in advance. I was trying to burn a disc, and started having trouble with burning this movie (have done several before, including earlier versions of this movie). After wierd things happening twice - the first disc would burn, then the second one might be o.k. but iDVD ejected it before it said it was done. Then, the third time I got this error:
The recording device reported the hardware error: Tracking servo failure. (0x09, 0x01.)
Any idea what this means and what I should do?
(I'm posting this on both the hardware and software locations since I'm not really sure which it is.)

    Hi,
Thanks for the comments! The CD/DVD lens cleaner appears to have taken care of the problem! I was able to successfully do a backup of my hard drive with Toast (wouldn't work before, see below) and burn two copies of a movie using iDVD. (I put more details of the errors below in case that's helpful for someone else down the line.
I am trying to do the Apple Hardware Test, as you suggested, but need to double check a couple of things. When the article you put a link to mentions the "Apple Hardware Test CD" and the "system CD" are both references to the "Software Install and Restore" CDs? (Those are the only relevant-sounding ones I received, no "Hardware Test CD".) If I put those in, can I run the relevant tests without reinstalling the software (and presumably deleting the other files on my hard drive)?
I did do the steps suggested by PT up through the reboot, except for sort of doing Preferential Treatment out of order because it took me a bit to realize that if I made the window bigger it would show what to try (the error message was truncated and not viewable). Then, rather than trying iDVD again, I tried to use Toast to back up the computer to avoid having to pay for that in case what the Apple repair folks do would necessitate an overdue (and if done by them costly) backup. Toast crashed with remarkable similar messages:
The drive reported an error: Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST Sense Code = 0x30, 0x05 CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM – INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT
The drive reported an error: Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR Sense Code = 0x44 INTERNAL TARGET FAILURE
The disk failed to be written.
Well, at least we have (so far) avoided the PBJ, in spite of having two wonderful children a year minus a week apart. (I'm afraid we did the adoption agency we used a disservice - we gave them our old non-Apple PC.)
    Thanks so much.

  • TRACKING SERVO FAILURE?????

the CD bruning software i use is Toast and i havent had any trouble out of it until now.
anyway i tried it last night and this message came up after about 2 mins of trying to write the Lead-in to the CD
    "The Drive Reported an Error:

What does this mean and how can i fix it?

    Hi,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
Try burning at a lower speed.
Have you sucessfully burned with this brand/speed media before?

  • Tracking Servo Failure error

I sporadically get an error: The drive reported an error: Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR Sense Code = 0X9, 0X01 TRACKING SERVO FAILURE
I get this when burning DVD's using iDVD and also w/3 different versions of Toast. I get the message when burning data to DVD, also when burning video to DVD. Some disks burn fine, some get the error, all the time using the same brand of disks.
    Any suggestions?

    1. Try burning at a slightly slower speed
    2. Try running a DVD Lens cleaner disc through it

There is only one option and that is to replace the drive. It is not expensive to perform the replacement yourself if you so choose.

  • Help: What is Tracking Servo Failure?

When burning Dvds with DVD studio Pro I get the following hardware error message.
    The drive reported an error:
    HARDWARE ERROR
    TRACKING SERVO FAILURE (0x09, 0x02)
I am wondering if it could just be a bad batch of DVDs (Datawrite red 16 speed), though I have used this make successfully previously. Or could it be something more serious? After all it says hardware failure...
Strangely enough, the recorder burns Cds using Itunes fine.
Has anybody come across this before?
    I'd appreciate your insight...

Hello again, it appears the problem was DVD-media related. I bought a different make (Philips DVD-R) and the project burned fine. Moreover, I tested a Datawrite DVD in another Macbook Pro, burning files with Finder. The burn process failed, stating the recorder lost connection to drive. So Datawrite DVDs are a no no.
It looks like the Hardware Error message in DVDSP might refer not to the drive itself but maybe the media used in this case. Makes sense now.
Thank you both for your comments.

It's probably a real hardware failure, but there's an outside chance that some piece of firmware/software "didn't get the memo" about the automatic speed reduction. What happens if you try it again with a "requested burn speed" of 8x or less?

  • UJ-85J Burning Problems: Tracking Servo Error

After several successful burns today (and many more throughout the past year), a few burns at the end of the day using Toast 8 Titanium have produced the following problem:
    +The drive reported an error:+
    +Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR+
    +Sense Code = 0x09, 0x01+
    +TRACKING SERVO FAILURE+
It would happen at about 6% or so and it failed in writing both the lead-in and lead-out of the DVD+R media. I tried several discs from that stack and another brand, but it continued to fail. I have a Matshita UJ-85J drive. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    CJB

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I think you should contact AppleCare. Without stating the obvious, it looks like you have a hardware error.

  • Tracking Servo Error

I have an Intel Mac 20" with a Matshita UJ-846 superdrive, that I bought 8-months ago. Now it's reporting 'tracking servo error" (with Roxio Popcorn) and "tracking servo failure" (with Toast 7). every time I try to burn a disc. My fear is that the superdrive is going or gone, although it still plays DVD's. I've asked some more knowledgeable friends, and they have recommended both checking the buffer underwrite protection, which I can't find, and updating the firmware, and doing this before I have the superdrive replaced. I live in the mountains and I'm hours away from an Apple Repair Centre, so I'd like to try their suggestions.
Does anyone know where I can find Mac-based firmware (I've only found it for PC) for the UJ-846, and where the buffer underwrite protection menu is located?
    Thanks,
    Frederico

  • ERROR on  MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-85J

this what i get when i was finishing a movie on toast 9
    The Drive reported an error:
    sense key = hardware error
    sense code = 0x09,0x01
    Tracking Servo failure
and on idvd it said an error with drive too !

You're about to equate a solution to your problem with voodoo, but this actually worked for me. I was getting the same drive errors and tried everything short of replacement, but the following trick worked:
    open system preferences.
    go to international
under languages: drag any of the other languages to the top, then drag english back to the top.
make sure "order for sorted lists" is set to enlish
make sure "work break" is set to english(united states, computer)
    then restart
Yes, it sounds stupid but what do you have to lose.
    Good luck

  • Hardware Error When Burning a CD or DVD

I keep getting the following error when I try to burn a CD or DVD via my internal burner....

I think it may be a media problem as well...on numerous occasions when I insert a blank CD the drive will spin a few times the eject the CD....
I'm guessing I can find the firmware update via the Apple Support section..?

Thx...I was not aware I needed Toast 7.1....my current version has worked in the past so I thought I was OK....

  • DVD burner-drive error reported

Everytime I burn something, it burns halfway and a message appears stating that: the drive reported an error, sense key=hardware error, sense=0X09, 0X01, tracking servo failure
Do I need to take it in to a Mac store? I purchased the AppleCare...HELP!
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I HAVE HAD THE EXACT PROBLEM BURNING DVD'S, on and off for over a year now. It doesn't appear to be a "media" issue because it won't burn in ANY application regardless if it is a DV Stream, MPEG4, Quicktime, etc. I have tried it in TOAST 7, iDVD and I get this message:
THE DRIVE REPORTED AN ERROR SENSE KEY=MEDIUM ERROR SENSE CODE= 0x73,0x03
In all cases the application will "process" and encode the media, then when it gets to the recording part on the DVD, it consistently spits out the DVD and displays the message above.
NOT SURE what I can do. Have worked 10 years as an editor from AVID to Final Cut and this error seems to be inherent in the hardware. Maybe Apple can investigate this and provide us with an alternate writer for the G4.
    I'm using Read/Write MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-815: Any thoughts, anyone?

  • Hardware error when burning dvd

i am using DVD Studio Pro as well as iDVD to try and burn a project i created. i have also tried simply burning files to a DVD in Toast Titanium. i am well below the 4.7 gig limit for the project, all the video files are mpeg2 and ready to go. the entire "burn process" runs until the actual burning is supposed to take place. just recently i got this error message:
    hardware error
    tracking servo failure 0x09, 0x01
i have a 8x SuperDrive and i am trying to use Phillips 1-8x DVD+Rs. does anyone have a solution to this problem? i am beginning to get frustrated.

All the super drives seem to exhibit problems, at least some of the time with some media, especially at the highest burn rate. There is a work around. In DVD Pro, "format" with the output device set to disc and the format to ".img". When this is finished, open Disk Utility and "convert" the .img file to a CD/DVD master (.cdr). This file can then be used to burn to a blank DVD. If you click the options arrow in the burn dialog before beginning the burn, you can select a speed other than "maximum". Not elegant, but it works. My HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4165B DVD drive only succeeds at burning at its maximum rate (16x) about 1/3 of the time. However, at 12X it has been quite reliable.
