Toast, Superdrive, EyeTV.
Trying to burn a DVD with Toast 8.0.1 from a recording made with Elgato's EyeTV Diversity.
The recording is raw mpeg 2 governed by the broadcaster.
Within EyeTV I click the Toast icon and Toast launches with my recording ready in the window. The recording is 1.9GB approx. 1 hr 45 min in length. Toast multiplexes and then takes it's sweet time encoding. The regardless of the quality setting (good, better or best, I've tried them all) It tells me that the recording is now 4.99 GB and will not fit on my DVD of 4.38GB. The encoding is set to 'Automatic'.
The people at Roxio that make Toast are really unhelpful. They suggest I upgrade the firmware of the optical drive. I think it's LG the model is GSA-S10N.
I cannot find anything on Apples or LG's website about this model. Software Updater says everything is upto date.
All I want is to burn a DVD of my recording. It worked with Toast 6.
Does anyone have good, clear, intelligent advice?
Thanks
Maybe the sound format is set to PCM 96kHz by mistake.

IDVD 6 or Toast 8 - ADVICE PLEASE!
I have some old video that I want to transfer to DVD. They are in all sorts of formats: MOV, AVI, WMV, ASF, MPG. If that weren't enough, I also want to transfer some video from VHS. I am planning to buy eyeTV to do the conversion, but also to capture some video from TV that I'd like to burn.
I know that they recommend using Toast with eyeTV, but is it that much better than iDVD for the other formats? Right now I have iDVD 5, which is pretty good (except I really don't like the themes).
I'd appreciate any advice!Toast 8 would be a great way to transfer those files linerally. That is to say that if you just wanted to burn DVDs of those files it shouldn't discriminate between file types. It would give you a great DVD every time as long as you set burn speed relatively low (2X or 4X).
I have had problems with iDVD in the past. In iDVD 5 the files that I edited would not burn with audio attached. That problem seems to have been fixed in later iDVD packages. If you want to set up menus for your DVDs then iDVD would be a great way to do it.
I would suggest that if you're going to view the DVD or use it as a backup to stick with Toast 8. That way you don't have to use the themes from iDVD and will have a working DVD without wasting a handfull. -
MyTV.PVR vs EyeTV 250...Is there a winner?
Hy everyone,
I was looking for opinions regarding myTV.PVR vs EyeTV 250.
Without knowing much about VHS tranfering and recording digitally via Cable TV and before I found out about the existence of EyeTV 250, I purchased myTV.PVR (which came with Eskape software). The salesman assured me that it was a good purchase but I guess they would say anything to sell products.
I told him that my intention was to transfer VHS tapes onto DVDs and also to record from Cable TV onto DVDs via my MacPro. I wanted to get the best video quality possible and something easy enough to use.
Now I'm wondering if I would have been better off with EyeTV 250 instead.
Which one gives better video and sound quality and has better options?
Any opinions?
Rio.
2x2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8) 1GB RAMI can answer. I've transferred about 300 vhs tapes over to DVD, AVI, MP4, etc.
Quality is dependent upon the quality of the VHS. I have VHS tapes that were created directly from digital video camcorder (medical procedures, surgery training) and the DVD quality is as good as any high quality commercial DVD. I have BetaMax tapes from the 70's and they burn to DVD from EyeTV as good if not better then their original quality. With EyeTV you have several quality options and can select Progressive Scan (which doubles the number of video lines for higher quality. You'll need at least 4Gigs of space for each VHS tape but once burned to DVD you can delete and move to the next.
Toast is the most superior EyeTV is built with Toast in mind. Simply drag an AVI or directly select Toast from EyeTV of any resulting VHS/Digital file that you capture and it will burn a fine DVD with Chapters, Titles, and more.
What I like most about EyeTV is the editing capabilities. You can cut out all the crap, re-edit the movie if you want to improve it (in case you are a budding movie editor yourself) and burn it to DVD.
As for easy - yes, it's pretty straight forward. If you have a two hour VHS movie, say a commercial release of an older James Bond (which is non-Macro, i.e., encrypted) movie it will take two hours to record it. Once recorded you can then edit the items you don't want (warnings, junk...) save the edited file (very quickly) then click on the EyeTV Toast icon and burn it to DVD. If using Progressive Scan you'll get a very high quality DVD. How much time required to burn the DVD depends. If you are using a 3Ghz Mac Pro with 8 Gigs of RAM (my system) it takes about 20-30 minutes.
If you have commercial VHS tapes that are encrypted (MacroVision is used) you'll need to obtain what some sellers call "an enhancer". This is small machine (size of two packs of cigarettes) that sits connected via RCA cables or via SVideo and reconnects out the opposite side to EyeTV, then your video is automatically decrypted.
The resulting DVD quality is "enhanced" and you get a fine quality DVD.
If you are copying over films or TV shows that you have recorded on VHS tapes then the quality is about as good as SVCD, depending on how well your antenna receives the signal. You'll have to cut out the commercials (easy to do with EyeTV) and the resulting DVD quality is as good if not a little better then the original VHS recording.
I did all of the above for about six months and finally realized I could copy a VHS tape via EyeTV and export it to high quality DiVX or AVI format which resulted in an average size of about 700megs. These media files play beautifully on a Mac using the DiVX player or RealMedia Player, QuickTime Pro, VLC and many more media players.
The nice part of the latter is that you can get four or five full high quality movies on a blank DVD. Thus, rather than four or five DVDs you get one DVD with for or five movies.
I hope this explains it all to you. Try buying a used EyeTV 200 off of eBay which is just as good as the EyeTV 250 and 500. They all use the latest EyeTV software and unless you have movies in High Density on VHS (which you won't) you don't need EyeTV 500 (that's what I have) but it does a fine job. Another Mac user that taught me much was a guy who bought a used EyeTV 200 on eBay for just $50. We exchanged DVDs we made from each system and they were both of excellent quality.
I hope this helps.

Running Leopard but also have updated TOAST from Eyetv and cannot burn any discs?? I get Mac OS Error -13780 and unable to burn any DVD?? Any help??
I'm replying to this since I don't get on here often enough to remember how to post a new question. I had successfully been burning shows that I downloaded to dvds through Toast. I did have 7.0 now I have 8.0 Suddenly I am getting this error message when I try to download now, "No Recorder Found. Please check cables and power." All cables are in. Power is on, battery is not low. I have restarted...and still the same error msg. Any suggestions?

Hard disk problem for pros. Help
I I have a 250GB hard drive on my iMac with 2GB Ram, on which I work with my music and videos (Logic Pro 7/8, and FCS 1). Immediately you might have spotted the problem already. How is a tiny 250GB gonna fit all that work? No it doesn't. I now have two external hard drives, a 320 and a 500 (both being USB). The 500 is reserved for my EyeTV archives (yes, I do EyeTV archives too. Sounds like I need 3TB of HDD space!) and iTunes library (which is nearing 100 now). The 320GB HDD on the other hand is reserved for backup purposes. Once in a while I back up my main 250GB built-in HDD on this 320GB for peace of mind.
Anyway, enough of that. I just purchased Logic Studio 8 and realised I need at least around 45GB just to upgrade. I hate pre-recorded loops so excluding the Jam Packs I still need around 22GB which I don't want to give away on my main 250GB HDD (having just 55GB left).
Since these pro apps (ie Logic Studio and Final Cut Studio) can only be installed on the running system, and my 320GB external is bootable, so I was wondering if I could boot from this external HDD and install the whole of Logic Studio here and run it here. It seems fine to run ordinary apps booting from the external HDD. But I'm kind of worried about the possible decrease in performance if I run the pro apps here. Now I'm installing Logic Studio on the external 320GB which I booted from. It seems to be taking an awful lot of time to install. Something tells me that if I install it on the internal HDD it shouldn't take that long.
So, any advice? Ideas? How should I allocate the use of all my HDDs?
(In fact, the best solution is to somehow get a lot of money and get a super fast Mac Pro with maximum HDD capacity. Mind you, my iMac hangs (or dies) a lot lately when I run a lot of apps at the same time. Parallel Desktop, Toast, and EyeTV: lately this seems to be the most popular "killer" combination, so to speak, that makes my iMac lag, hang and die. )You mean those hybrid (USB and FW400) HDDs are actually cheaper than pure FW400s? Buy a new external hard drive.... I don't know. It just seems too expensive a solution for me. Besides, I have been digging through my internal HDD and found some junk. Erasing them gave me about 40GB!! This really is the typical example of the digital age: the amount of junk, or useful files for that matter, we save; and the need for more and more capacity. So I've found a temporary solution for now, because I've just cleaned out 40GB. I just realised I haven't moved my photo library to the external HDD (but I already have for music library since ages ago) so I'll do that and that should give me another 10GB. So great news for me. For the time being, I can run Logic Studio, and Final Cut Studio locally (ie on the internal HDD).
As for Ram, I don't think my problem concerns it. I've got 2GB ram, and my iMac 17" is not the basic model so it will take up to 3GB. Of course, the more the better. Who here doesn't want 16GB of ram free of charge on their new free Mac Pro? 2GB was the compromise. If I had known I can upgrade the ram myself I would not have "customised" this iMac when I bought it. I can get very cheap (and supposedly high quality) ram myself. In my ancient PC times, I always customised/upgraded (even built from scratch) my PC myself because it's so easy. I just wish Apple computers are more like PCs in that area. Hey, Mac Pros are more like PCs in that area (though still don't have the total freedom of building on your own). There you go. I've got to put Mac Pro on my next Christmas wishlist. -
Roxio Toast Titanium 6.1 cannot see superdrive in MacBook Pro 17"
Hi Folks,
My superdrive worked perfectly fine with Toast Titanium 6.1, burning Cd's,Dvd's,dual layer Dvd's without any issues.
But just recently Toast has informed me that it cannot find a recorder.
here is the details of my superdrive as listed by System Profiler:
MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J:
Firmware Revision: FAV1
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media:
Media Type: CD-ROM
Blank: No
Erasable: No
Overwritable: No
Appendable: No
I am currently trying to get Roxio suipport to resolve the issue but no luck so far.
I have uninstalled & re-installed the Toast software, repaired permissions, the works but stiil Toast cannot see the Superdrive.
The only thing I can think of is I installed a recent firmware update for the MacBook Pro & maybe that had something to do with it.
I also don't think that updating to the latest version of Toast 8 will resolve the issue either.
Remember that the Superdrive was working just fine with Toast.
I have searced the froums & apple support documents to no avail.
The Toast site is not much help either.
Anybody have any ideas or a similar problem.
Thanks
fargioneMy problem has been solved!
I have carried out a complete re-install of the Os & I am right back up to OS 10.4.10.
Al the available updates have been installed & Toast 6.1.1 works just fine & sees the superdrive without any problems.
I think I have worked out what caused Toast to break.
Sometime back I was advised to run an app called Monolingual.
It is a utility that removes unecessary language resources from the os & reclaims disk space.
My advice is to live with the extra language's & avoid Monolingual.
Once again thank you all for your help.

Getting SuperDrive medium and hardware errors with Toast 7...Help!
Ever since I upgraded (or downgraded) from Panther to Tiger, I have not been able to burn DVDs using Toast Titanium 7. I have burned both to CD and to DVD using iDVD, but no luck with Toast. I keep getting either medium or hardware errors. I have tried several brands of DVD with no luck. The last straw was when I successfully burned a small iMovie to DVD and took the very next DVD in the stack and tried in Toast with the old "hardware error 03" Does anyone have a true fix (other than a new mac)? I have tried numerous system maintenance items, etc. but nothing is working. Here is much detail as I can provide:
1ghz 12" G4 Powerbook with 1.25 gig RAM
Matshita DVD-R UJ-816, Firmware ver. DXJ3 / MM3-C
If anyone knows of a fix, please let me know! Sigh....guess I should have replaced the SuperDrive with a new one when the guts were open for the new HD.Although my drive is a UJ-845E, it works fine with 7.1.2. Upgrade to that, and if there's still a problem, let's cover it then, as problem characteristics might also change. Hopefully, 7.1.2 will fix it for you.

VHS movies to iMovie 9 via EyeTV and Toast 8.
I am importing VHS home movies to EyeTV on my Mac Pro. I am able to get a file with the EyeTV ext, and I am able to create a DVD through Toast 8. I want to edit this video with iMovie 9. iMovie wants a different file ext. Any help?
There are two ways to get movies into iMovie from EyeTV. You do not need Toast, unless you just want to add a step (although Toast is good if just want to make unedited DVDs)
1) Export your movie from EyeTV in h.264 format, or use the Apple TV preset.
2) The second way is a little more complicated, but it produces better results. Here it is. You will need to download and install MPEG Streamclip (free) and the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component ($20).
I go into the EyeTV file and right-click/Show in Finder, then right-click/Open Package Contents. There you will find a folder of MPEG2 files with the .MPG extension.
You can drag these files into MPEG Streamclip and convert then into Apple Intermediate Codec.
If it offers to repair timecode breaks, say yes. You can also deinterlace the files in this step.
Then you can import the resulting AIC file into iMovie for Editing. -
Toast and Apple SuperDrive - Serious Compatibility Issue
My friend's G5's DVD SuperDrive suddenly can't mount DVD that burnt with Toast 7 and 6, why is that? Only DVD that burnt with Disk Utility can be mount, I am still not known yet which exactly model he's owning now. will update when I am informed. Anyone has the same problem?
* All his softwares are up-to-date via Software Update.Chances are that the media he is using is the problem.
I doubt very seriously that it has anything to do with the version of Toast that is being used.
You will find that not all Media is compatable with all drives, both in speed and format.
In otherwords, if your machine will only read and write at 2X and using DVD-R media.
There is your problem. DVD+R or RW will not work as well as if he used or burned the project above 2X, lets say 8X using 8X media you can't read it with your computer.
The newer optical drives will read and write at the faster speeds at 8X and above, and will also read and write to
DVD-R DVD-RW DVD+R DVD+RW.
DVD-R Media is the most widely recognized and used media that will play on just about anything including most computers, 95%. Anything other than this media will not work accept on the newer burners and players.

Toast crashed while burning, now Superdrive won't read or burn disc
my superdrive just died... today i was burning dvds... and it was stuck while verfifying, so I force quit... now it can't read any disc...
is there a way to reset the drive so the head can read again?
thanksHi Kid Calculator-
You can try resetting the SMU and the PRAM but you should also consider the possibility that the drive no longer works.
How to reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) or Power Mac G5 (Late 2005)

Macbook Superdrive Toast - External Drive Recommendations?!
My optical drive no longer accepts any disks, just spits them back out, macbook is no longer under warranty. I'm thinking I will purchase an external drive as the cheapest replacement option. Can anybody recommend one that I could buy at Best Buy??
Hey mac buddy. My best guess would be to first take the computer to any apple store near you. If anything they can tell you how much it would cost to have replaced. If not fixable, they will tell you what to buy as an external drive. They are very knowledgable about apple products. Or call the 1800 number and ask them. Also.....the geek squad at best buy can tell you what to get even though they are slightly communist and will probably charge you $50 just to answer your question. hahaha

New iMacs = Junk? First the freezing, now Superdrive is toast.
Anyone not living in a cave has experienced, or at least knows about, this.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1131571
Now, the "Super" (sic) Drive in my iMac has gone insane. Inserting perfectly good CDs and DVDs results in several minutes of grinding, followed by the disc being spit out. These same discs work just fine on my 4-year-old G4 iMac, which I'm having to rely upon more and more lately!
Apple, you're about to lose me as a customer. $500 PCs are more reliable than this.Greetings,
I have ten each of the 20" and 24" New Aluminum iMacs, have had for a couple of months, and they have been rock solid. They have gotten all of the updates available and are all still OK. The only big time game we allow is WoW and it works fine. We use Parallels and have Vista loaded to cover our one "Windows Only" propietary program that we must have for a few more months.
I personally do not have an Aluminum model, but my 17" and 20" White plastic models are still great machines. I will replace one of them (17") later on next year. The school has the ones (20) that I mentioned earlier.
I have to work with all platforms, but my favorite and most reliable has always been the Macs, clear back 20 or so years. I have had much more trouble with PeeCees - always have. I've been using Macs and PeeCees for about the same length of time.
Don't worry, you would do well to switch to the mac platform - less that 1% of the machines ever post here for any given model of machine and it's usually much less than that.
Games, and other software, but especially games, usually cause most of a computers issues, for any platform, so it's usually up to the game manufacturers to resolve this. If Apple has a known flaw, they will fix it as soon as they can, and always have. As far as software, of any kind goes, it's up to the software folks to make it work with the computer, not the other way around.
Mac is cool - enjoy it if you make the plunge.
Cheers,

Hi,
I'm really struggling w/my new iMac and creating dvds from old vhs tapes. I've printed the iDVD manual from the Apple site but it's so superficial. For example, it doesn't tell me if I can choose a theme that has "drop zones" and leave the drop zones empty (I like the theme but don't want to try to figure out drop zones--or what to put in them!). When I left them empty, the map feature flagged those menus as errors--so I was afraid to burn! I guess I have 2 related questions:
1) If I download Toast, do I also need to buy Rosetta?
2) Would I be using Toast instead of either iMovie or iDVD (the Roxio site says it works seamlessly w/iLife) or do I pass files back and forth?
Thanks for any help.Hi,

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of iDVD. I live very close to the Apple Store and could sit in on one of their iDVD classes but bought Toast 7 instead. BTW, I have taken their "Final Cut Pro" class and their 'iMovie" class which are really more like demonstrations but you can ask questions and get some solid answers.
I guess I have 2
related questions:
1) If I download Toast, do I also need to buy
Rosetta?
Nope. Rosetta is included in OSX and you won't even know it is there. You just install Toast in your applications folder, drag the Toast icon to your dashboard so you have it handy and start it up!
2) Would I be using Toast instead of either iMovie or
iDVD (the Roxio site says it works seamlessly
w/iLife) or do I pass files back and forth?
Thanks for any help.
iMovie lets you edit previously made movie or combine smaller movies together and save them as one larger separate movie. You then burn that movie to DVD using iDVD or Toast 7.0.2.
Your saved projects can be in .MOV or other file formats and you can use the large number of themes in Toast if you want to. In Toast you don't have to use a theme at all.
I have a ton of VHS training movies I must edit and burn to DVD and I use EyeTV 200 which is a little box that connects to your iMac via firewire and to your VCR with the standard 3 RCA plugs (red/white/yellow - there are also svideo and digital connections). You don't need a powersource for the EyeTV box. I assume it works along the lines of the Canabus (sp?) product you use.
I start the video using the VCR remote and edit as I review the film. I can remove extraneous stuff easy enough. Each stop and start creates a new segment. I then pull all the segements together in iMovie, edit more if need be, then save as one Quicktime movie (.mov).
Next I fire up Toast and drag the .mov file into the DVD making portion. Select a theme and burn away.
I also have a LaCie Slim 24X DVDRW/CDRW connected to the iMac via USB. It will only burn at 2X under Rosetta (Roxio will be releasing an upgrade of Toast in Universal Binary form, soon they say). I usually use the LaCie to burn the one-hour movies (Toast finds it just fine) to cut down on the wear and tear of my SuperDrive. I learned this from using other OSs and machines where I burned out the DVDRom very quickly and now I use two. I use the LaCie for the grunt work and the Superdrive for the important work.
That's how I do it. You CAN use Toast to burn a DVD without using a Theme and I do that often enough. You can set it to just start the movie when the DVD is inserted or place a 'start' button on the first frame once inserted.
Hope this info helps. I remember how confused I was when I first started and now I just wish the whole process was faster!

Using 2 Identical SuperDrives with DVDSP in Mac Pro
Hello-
I recently installed 2 new identical Pioneer 118 Superdrives in my 2006 Mac Pro. In DVDSP, I'm having problems selecting a drive and burning discs. The Burn dialog box allows me to select either drive, but both have identical names. When the top one in the list is selected, sometimes the bottom tray will open; when I try to burn a disc there, it takes a long time for the burn to begin, and sometimes it will hang before finishing. I'm not sure if the Mac is having a tough time figuring out which drive is which because of the identical names.
I have both drives installed correctly, with Cable Select chosen on both. I wonder if there is way, anywhere, to rename the drives, or if this is the problem. The drives both read any kind of disc without problems, and I have burned discs on both, so they do work. I can also create disc images, which I can then burn in disc utility.
It just seems like DVDSP gets confused because the drives are identical. Should I get a different model or brand of drive to replace one, or is there another way to straighten this out?
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide. Thanks for the response; I've been trying a few things today, and they seem to be working now. Both drives show up in DVDSP with identical names; when I select the upper name, the lower tray opens, and I can burn the disc. Selecting the lower name results in the upper tray opening, and again I can successfully burn.
In Toast, both names also appear and I can burn to both drives (haven't tried two discs at once, yet), although the names/trays are correctly oriented in Toast.
What I do notice is that these drives (New Pioneer 118s) take an extra minute or so before burning begins (in DVDSP only, so again, this might be a name recognition issue), and are noisier while burning.
I wonder if switching to the master/slave setup would improve anything. -
Running OS X 10.8.2 (12C60) on MacBook 5,1 (late 2008 aluminum), 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3, ST9750420AS 750.16GB HDD more or less without incident since Mountain Lion was introduced. In the last month, and particularly in the last week, I'm experiencing app crashes with alarming regularity. Acrobat Pro 9.5.2, Adobe CS4 11.02, Mail 6.2 to name a few. Address Book has been non-functional since a Genius Bar appointment one year ago and I'm unclear how AB and Contacts are intended to play together [or not?]. A few days ago I downloaded an update to Roxio Toast Titanium v11.1, inserted a photo CD into the SuperDrive to burn a copy, and there was no response...in a minute or so it ejected the photo CD and crashed (see attached report). The SuperDrive works with other DVDs and Music CDs but otherwise unresponsive to Toast.app and remains so.
Directly following that incident, I began experiencing regular crashes with otherwise common apps [e.g. Mail 6.2 (1499)]. At first it crashed several times (see report below) and I performed the usual series of remedies beginning with a simple Disk Utility Permission Repair and Verification…it passed. Following recommended procedures, quit all applications and performed the series of tests prior to resetting the SMC. No luck. Started in Safe Mode…no apps with slashed circle. Reset PRAM to no effect. Tried the Apple Hardware (long - 2½ hr) test with original install disc…passed without a hitch; Tech Tool Deluxe tests indicated no departure from normal. Long story short, went through the entire list of 15 diagnostic tests which purportedly will not exacerbate the issue or entail data removal/destruction/rewriting/reinstallation. Safari Version 6.0.2 (8536.26.17) began to show signs of fatigue and crashed more than once.
I'm not unfamiliar with OS X and its predecessors, OpenStep and NeXTStep, though until recently I've always had the benefit of both a sysadmin and IT Manager in my employ. No longer. Apple's Business-to-Business relations people recommended somebody local who sent a lieutenant to fool around with Ubuntu, before pronouncing my drives defunct—had to remind him he was trying to fix a Mac Pro which works just fine so please concentrate on the MacBook.
The MacBook uses an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M GPU so using the mini-Display Port to Dual-Link DVI adapter I can switch from a 13" display to my 30" Cinema Display as desired. For a period the Apple Keyboard Hub demanded 500 mA of current while only 100 mA was available. Solved that.
All of which led up to the most vexing issue I've faced yet (n.b. I'm not so digitally literate that I understand much of what's addressed on these forums). I've continually upgraded through PowerBooks, then MacBooks, and so forth but never felt confident the ghosts of OSs past have been fully excised—and would really like to know how to do that. I back up to an external HDD with CCC which is comforting but not helpful when trying to remove outdated preferences, apps, even an HP PostScript Software RIP which survived the transition from Classic!
Recently tried a very judicious use of Onyx and thought some progress had been made, but evidently not the case. Mail, in particular, not only crashes but when it does remain running, it will not respond to print requests...except with an error tone. Feeling sorely vexed and appears I have company. The Crash Logs for Mail and Toast are included below, as is the System Diagnostic Report for an Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.5.2 Hang. With luck they will be more meaningful to someone here than they are to me. Naturally, any and all assistance which may be forthcoming will be gratefully received.

0x6bdf000 - 0x6Thank you, MrHoffman...while the exact cause remains uncertain, I suspect it was a combination of both software and hardware issues as you suggest above.
A close inspection of theSystem Profiler turned up a USB High-Speed Bus issue. I use a wired keyboard together with a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link Adapter to make use of a 30" Cinema Display at my desk—the USB hardware device tree showed the Apple Keyboard USB Hub required 500 mA of current when only 100 mA was available.
After some reading, I realized not all USB ports are created equal…and realized I'd probably connected them in the wrong order. Disconnecting all the USB devices and then reconnecting them in a 'logical' sequence apparently supplies these same devices with enough current to keep them happy.
A second possibility suggested itself on realizing that the number and nature of crashes soared following the installation of Toast Titanium 11. Eventually I found a preference file (com.roxio.Toast.plist) complaining"syntax error cannot parse a NULL or zero-length data." Removing the offending file seems to have had a beneficial effect beyond that particular app, though perhaps a sequence of attention to the usual cache purges and system resets, plus a dose of cod liver oil, has cumulatively effected a lull in the crash history.
I've avoided installation of any anti-viral, anti-malware and other similar software products to protect, accelerate or otherwise improve performance, relying on more hardware memory and a faster, larger HDD to reduce the overall load. In any case, we seem to have our groove back and I certainly appreciate your taking the time to review my post and respond to same. dcd
