TOC for hierarchical book using child book TOCs?

(My first hiearchical book in FM11. Win7x64.)
I've created a book of two child books.
Each child book has:
A generated TOC as its first file. Its first paragraph in the primary flow has the paratag dtc-ChapTitle.
Content as its second file, with tags such as h1-Head1, h2-Head2, and other paratags.
(Side note: that child book design implements the idea of a chapter TOC without using a text inset. That's how this adventure started.)
dtc-ChapTitle appears only in the (generated) TOCs of the child books (1's above), not in the content files (2's above).
The parent book has two child books and a generated TOC. The generated TOC of the parent book is to include dtc-ChapTitle, h1-Head1, and other paratags.
The parent TOC does generate with h1-Head1, and other paratags, but not dtc-ChapTitle.
Maybe I don't know how to think about hierarchical books and am clinging to flat-book thinking.
Am I being gently nudged toward using the <$chaptertitlename> variable somehow?  Section "cover pages" ?  But how do I make a "chapter TOC" the first file in the child book -- or otherwise make the chapter TOC appear before the chapter that it describes?
Best regards,

Latest news:
I switched from using a child book to using the Folder feature.
As the "template" file for the folder, I re-used the chapter TOC file that was part of the old child book.
So the book looks like this:
FrontCover
ParentBookTOC
FolderChapterFile
ParentBookIX
Results are:
ParentBookTOC now contains the chapter name that was missing from the book-of-books design attempt higher on this thread. The name is flowing in from Folder. Good.
In Folder, <$chaptertitlename> correctly produces the text that I typed in in the folder's Container Properties > Title. Good.
Folder is, in fact, the chapterTOC file from the previous architecture. So when I open ChapterFile and generate a separate TOC file, it appears as content of Folder. Good.
The chapter running header variable in ChapterFile produces a blank result. Not good.
When I attempt to use <$chaptertitlename> in the running header variable in ChapterFile, it produces the file name, even after I regen the book. Not good.
Adobe's blog entry leaves a logical gap in its coverage. The important sentence is: " For all other documents which are neither Folder template file nor part of the FM book, variable will reflect the filename of the file in which it is used." (emphasis added)
The file in this case is not a Folder template and is part of the book. In this case, the variable is producing the name of the file, not the Title from the Folder's Container Properties, even after I regen the book.
Again, I don't have a book-of-books now. I have a single book with a Folder.
So how do I type the chapter name in one place, say as the Folder name, and have that available in ChapterFile?

  • Create TOC javascript for indesign book

    Hi friends,
i am new to indesign javascript. i want to create a javascript for TOC indesign book using paragrph style
could anyone help me. i am strugling long time.

"It didn't work for me" doesn't work for me. Always, always, always, state why it doesn't work for you.
Did you try to use it, but could not get it to work?
Or, do you need to do something special that the built-in function does not do?
It should not be extremely hard to make a javascript version that does (roughly) the same. You could try something like this:
For every paragraph style you want to include (most likely all sorts of headings),
Search for all occurrences, and store the text, its page number, and (important!) its story offset in an array.
You need the text because that's what will appear in the TOC.
You need the page number because, well, that's what the TOC is for :-)
Most important: you need the story offset so you can reconstitute the original order of the headings. You can only search for one level of heading at a time, so without sorting, you would get "Heading 1 -- Heading 1 -- Heading 1 -- Heading 2 -- Heading 2 -- Heading 2" (etc.)
When you have gathered all of the information for your entire book, sort on story offset. (I forgot, it's for a Book, right? You need to store a document id as well, so you can sort throughout multiple documents.) (See Ed.)
Then write out every text in the right order, followed by its page number.
The IndexMatic script that Marc points out should already contains lots of the logic described here -- esp. searching and storing page numbers.
[Ed.] Thinking about it, a Book (multiple documents) should *not* cause any problems, and you don't need to know in which document some text was found. Simply sort the paragraphs on their page number; only when these are the same for more than one paragraph, sort just these on their Story Offset. Logically, there should not be two headers with the same page number in two different documents.

I think you can get Windows 7 for around $99. Install the 64bit version as the 32bit version will not be able to use all your new computer's ram if you have more than about 3.5gb.
Back up your quick books data now before the old hard drive dies. You can copy your data over to your new installation of Windows and quick books.
By the way, there is quick books for Mac http://quickbooks.intuit.com/mac/?sc=BNR-000-COR-quickbooks&priorityCode=4902000 000&cid=ppc_google_QB-Intuit-Core-Brand-Mac_quick-books-for-mac_exact&site=&ad_i d=9347918288&raw_keyword=quick%20books%20for%20mac
So you may not need to install Windows at all.

Hi, these are only suggestions:- Delete your Mail account on your Mac.
Go to your home Library -> Preference -> Drag the Mail.plist & Mail history.plist to your desktop.
ReBoot & Repair Permissions & then reset up Mail account.
The p.lists can then be Trashed....L

  • Hello , I want to ask some question about ipads \  How powerful is the iPad?  How useful is it for reading books, newspaper or magazines or for surfing the web? Can you identify any shortcomings of the device?   please help me :(

    Hello ,
I want to ask some question about ipads \
    How powerful is the iPad?
How useful is it for reading books, newspaper or magazines or for surfing the web?
Can you identify any shortcomings of the device?
    please help me

it's less powerful than your average computer. THink of it like a netbook but with a better processor.
It'll do fine for surfing (although if you browse a lot of flash based sites you will need to get a third party browser since safari doesn't accommodate it)
You may do OK on reading books, papers or magazines, especially if they have apps, but the ipad's screen is backlit, so it doesn't work well outdoors and you may need to fiddle with the brightness so that you don't get eye strain (it's just like doing too much reading from a computer screen)
I would say the biggest short comings are data transfer. Apple's preferred work flow is that everything is done via iTunes or the internet....well people dont' always have 100% reliable always on internet access so you can find yourself in a situation where you can't get things on/off the iPad.
By and large, it's a good device for day to day stuff, but is not a computer replacement.

  • Since I've updated to iOS 6 I am unable to use the next/back buttons from Headphone for audio book chapters.

Since I've updated from iOS 5 to iOS 6 I am unable to use the next/back buttons from Headphone for audio book chapters.
This is working fine for albums but are broken for audio books.
The back button refers always to the first chapter of the audio book (very annoying if you are in the middle of an audio book) and the nex button goes one level higher back to the selection of the audio book itself.
In iOS 5.0 it was still possible to navigate throught the audio book chapters using these buttons.
This still happens in iOS 6.1.
    Is this a known bug?
    Does any solution exist?
    Thx,
    Oliver

To gdgmacguy your a f****** idiot for one I'm having the same problem as pennymar. And you tell me to quit whinning. You got more problems then the iOS 6 you did not answer my question nor the other 13 or whatever you replied to within a 30 min time frame. You must got nothing better to do then to harass people and to pretend you know something about apple products. Which you don't from what I've read the other advices you should have gave to other people. But you didn't you replied a question back to the people asking a question. So if your not gonna use these community forums the right way don't use them at all.

If I publish my iBook I created with iBooks Author, can I just have it for my personal use? I don't to sell my book,

'publish' in this context means to share with the world via the store.

When using Lightroom Book module for Blurb book making, why do I keep getting a low image quality message if it's supposedly accessing my large raw files in my library?

I think I've solved my problem with a Google Search. I came across a free slide show generator
(contributions requested) that shows much higher quality slide shows than either iPhoto or Aperture 3.
You click on a folder of jpegs and it almost immediately generates thumbnails and within a few seconds
I can be viewing a full screen, tack sharp, slideshow of all of the files in the folder. Much sharper than
    I'm used to seeing.
I think I'll keep the Aperture 3 and use if for the purpose it's intended for in the future. I'll also redo the
image preview files to the small size it started with and then I'll copy all of the files I'm interested in from
iPhoto into a separate folder on another disk. I'll use Aperture to catalog and to perform image manipulations
on but I won't try to use it as an iPhoto replacement. I don't think I'll be using iPhoto much as an image
viewer in the future either after I finish moving my favorite pictures to the Phoenix Slides folder.
The name of the free program is Phoenix Slides. It's free to download and try, free to keep (though I
think you'd want to pay the small amount requested) and fast. My pictures have never looked so good
    before.

    I didn't mention Lynda.com.
And, no, Total Training and Lynda.com certainly haven't merged.
Total Training has some good Premiere Pro stuff, but it's not the first place that I'd point someone for Premiere Pro.

    Hello ListenIt,
While the following was written for the iPhone, the process should be the same on your iPod Touch.
Remove a song from iPhone. Tap Songs, swipe the song, then tap Delete. The song is deleted from iPhone, but not from your iTunes library on your Mac or PC, or from iCloud.
