TOC in indesign....

When I load my TOC, only the first line of content shows up in the text frame (there is a red plus sign at the bottom). The rest I can only see if I delete the space after my page number (and then it's only one line at a time). Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong?

My first guess would be there is a Keep Option applied to the paragraph style you used for the leistings and it's set to start on next page...

  • Formatting TOC in InDesign cs6

    I have a question about formatting the TOC in InDesign cs6.
    I am currently working on editing a catalogue for my work which may end up being +700 pages long. Each product page has a product name and product desciption under neath.
    Eg:
    Product Name
    Product Description
    Each are in a seprate text box with a specific paragraph style.
    I am trying to generate the TOC so that it will inclue the Product Name and Description on the same line (see example of desired outcome)
    Eg:
    Product Name     Product Description...............................Page Number
    I have yet been able to figure how how to do this as there are many, many formatting options in ID.
    I would greatly appreaciate if anyone had any tips for me to make this process go as smoothly as possible.
    Regards,
    Valerie

  • Formatting a TOC in Indesign 5.5

    Let's see if I can explain this clearly. I am using Indesign 5.5 to generate a book TOC. The format I want is:
    Frame 1 (A chapter number that isn't printed) then a tab then Frame 2 then right ident tab for the page number. There is enough room to be all on one line.
    Frame 1 is on a non printing layer (from layer 2); Frame 2 is the chapter title (on layer 1). Each frame has a seperate paragraph style. In the toc dialog box I have tried to set both frames as level one with the number coming after frame 2; I have tried them on two different levels with no number after one and the number right indented after frame 2 BUT they always come out the same: frame 2 comes first then on a seperate line is frame 1 (these frames are backward) and the page number prints on a third line.
    I am hoping it is just my stupidity.
    Help Appreciated.

    Thanks for your quick response Peter. It feels like it should be able to be done. It is grabbing the right info but is just putting it on seperate lines and in reverse order.
    An example of what I want is:
    Hexagram One     Our Creative Essence               33
    Hexagram One is the content from a non printing layer, next is the chapter title and then the page number.
    What I get is
    Our Creative Essence
    Hexagram One
    33

  • Images in TOC in InDesign CS6

    I'm hoping someone can help me. I’m using InDesign CS6 on a Windows 8.1 Pro.
    I'm busy with a book and I did anchor the grouped images (grey block and a text block) so that they move with the heading. This text is in a paragraph style. When I create my toc the images also appear in the toc, but I don't want them there. Is there a way to only have the text in my toc?
    Any help on these questions is appreciated.

    you can do the same thing explained in the previous post by resetting the paragraph style "Heading" with a fixed return when the lesson is with one number and another para style whenthe titles when the lesson has two digits

  • , Page Numbering/TOC in InDesign CS5

    Hi, I am using InDesign CS5 and need some help showing the page numbers for a section that will be added after printing.
    I have almost completed a low volume 400+ page book (60 copies) and need some special numbering.
    I am using 8 & 16pp signatures in this book. The first section is: Front Matter, the second section is for Front Text, the Center Section is a color photo album with 40pp (2-16pp & 1-8pp signatures), and the fourth section is Back Text.
    The Center Section will be printed on a color printer and hand inserted at the binders. I have no problem with the numbering of all the sections, but I would like to have the center section to be included in the Table of Contents of the book. I could update the TOC manually but as I move things around that would be a lot of work and I might have errors later. I hope that I made this question clear enough. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I would add the pages for the color section and any headings you want to include in the TOC, and simply not include it in the PDF you send to the the monochrome printer, and include only that section in a PDF for the color printer.

  • Updating TOC in INDESIGN CS6

    How do I update only the page numbers in my own formatted TOC without having to redo the formatting after making many changes in the document?

  • How can I create a general TOC using the titles of my books TOCS

    I have a document that includes the information of 6 different books, each one has its own TOC at the beginning of the chapter. The chapter title is only written as the title in the TOC. In the first book I want to create a general index that shows the 6 chapter names. I have tried to create a TOC, but it just appears blank. I think that's because I haven't written the titles, they were created in each chapter TOC by InDesign.  I really think there must be a way to create this general TOC but I just can't figure it out. Can you help me, please?

    Create every TOC with a title paragraph style which is not the same as the title styles in the text.
    Create a new document, assamble all documents in a book fille indb, create a new TOC which reads out the paragraph style of your TOC’s titles, include all book files in the definition of this TOC only.

  • Importing a TOC from Microsoft Word

    I'm working on a Medical instruction manual that was done in Microsoft Word.    The TOC came over and SEEMs to link up to it's appropriate areas but I'm having a hard double checking because of the naming conventions (i.e. "ref00084848").   I want to make sure the TOC links up to it's appropriate pages...and I'd also like to know how to make the pages dictate the TOC.  For example if we added a page which pushed pages,  is there a way for that to automatically update the TOC?
    One other question:  This manual is going to be dictated in several languages so it's 144 pages and the entire thing is threaded.   THere are diagrams with arrows pointing at specific things in photos with words.    Normally I would do it in illustator and place them in the text block to nest them but because their being translated I have to keep the all text in InDesign.  Is there an easy way to nest everything like this?
    Thank you in advance!
    -Craig

    is there a way for that to automatically update the TOC?
    To completely destroy all of the xrefs that make up the imported Word TOC and rebuild a brand-new TOC with InDesign's Table of Contents tool.  Which you want to do anyways because:
    This manual is going to be dictated in several languages
    I'm guessing here that "dictated" means "translated." That Word TOC stuff, you'll barely be able to get it to work in English, don't try to send it through translation.
    THere are diagrams with arrows pointing at specific things in photos with words.    Normally I would do it in illustator and place them in the text block to nest them but because their being translated I have to keep the all text in InDesign.  Is there an easy way to nest everything like this?
    An anchored object would work here, I think - depending on how you expect the language service provider to work, what you expect to get back, and so on. You could place an InDesign file into another InDesign file, just as you could place an Illustrator file, but I can't tell if you expect to hand off a package with all links to your LSP, or if you are expected to just export IDML, and they expect to return only IDML for you to clean up (which is a pretty terrible translation workflow, but normal for the bottom end of the language industry, for what it's worth).

  • TOC in pdf links only jump to a page!

    The auto TOC produces a TOC in a pdf. But the links are to a page only, they do not scroll down. Is it possible to create links that will scroll?

    I assume by TOC in a PDF, you mean bookmarks on the Bookmarks panel. The auto TOC in InDesign cannot be changed. You can (manually) change the bookmark destination in Acrobat Pro using the Bookmark panel.

  • Updating TOC erases all document text

    Hello all. I am working with a document in cs4 that I placed in from Word. All the heading styles were set in InDesign. There are graphics and text. I inserted a TOC on the first page early on. I then went to Update the TOC, and it asked if I wanted to include overset text. I clicked yes, and then all text in the entire document disappeared and was replaced by a TOC that only listed the very first heading of the document. Any time I try to insert a new TOC or update the TOC, this happens. What might be going wrong? I'm relatively new at making TOC in InDesign/working  with large documents, and just completely baffled. Sorry if this is a very simple fix. Thanks.
    Edit to add: I have also re-set my preferences and this did not solve the problem.

    Your TOC must ALWAYS be a separate story that is not threaded with any other text.

  • TOC Concept

    Hi,
      Can anyone explain me the concept behind the TOC in InDesign?
    How the ordering of contents is done, when the contents are in same page using multiple styles.
    - Sudha K

    Similar to my reply to your other post (http://forums.adobe.com/message/5763674) .. since the TOC is built from the para tags, you'll need to tweak the underlying EDD to assign different tags for the headings in the different topic types so your TOC template can include/exclude the tags you want.
    <sales-pitch>
    Note that using DITA-FMx makes this process much easier since you can create separate "component templates" for each topic type, and it's easier to identify and modify the proper EDD. It also uses the "proper" practice of including a frontmatter/booklists/toc element in your bookmap to create a TOC rather than using a FM-specific technique.
    </sales-pitch>
    Good luck!

  • Creating a TOC

    Hi,
    I searching for a solution to create a toc programatically.
    I have found the description in createtocsnippet.cpp but still I can't put the TOC to a frame automatically.
    It still ends up in displaying the mouse cursor to place the toc.
    The command kCreateTOCCmdBoss seems to create the toc and it looks like it places the toc, but Indesign it self says no toc created.
    If I use additional kFormatTOCCmdBoss to get the formating of the toc, I can't place it in a frame automatically.
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi,
    It looks like you have inserted the script in the "XML Source" tab. Would not advise that! The XML Source tab is fine for minor amendments / tinkering, but is not the best place to insert script.
    When you have LC open in Design view, there is a window at the top called "Script Editor" (available under the Windows menu).
    If this is a single line, it is worth dragging the bottom bar down so that you see a few lines of script at a time.
    Create a button on the page and then in Script Editor select the click event. You can then insert your text, as below:
    The script would be as before, but without the tags (LC inserts these automatically).
    var choice = app.popUpMenu("Page 1", "Topic 1", "Topic 2", "Topic 3");
         if (choice == "Page 1")
              xfa.host.currentPage = 0;
         if (choice == "Topic 1")
              xfa.host.currentPage = xfa.host.numPages -7;
         if (choice == "Topic 2")
              xfa.host.currentPage = xfa.host.numPages -6;
         if (choice == "Topic 3")
              xfa.host.currentPage = xfa.host.numPages -5;
    In the example above I am counting backwards from the total number of pages. If you document is static (number of pages does not increase) you can just script using "xfa.host.currentPage". Just remember that the page numbers are based on a zero numbering system.
    Hopefully you should end up with somethin like this:
    Good luck,
    Niall

  • Question: InDesign help with e-book creation

    When I place my InDesign created book into the Kindle Previewer, I run into two problems: 1) Some of its paragraphs are doublespaced and some are single. However, they are all set at 14.4 pts apart. And 2) The hyperlinks that connect the Table of Contents to each chapter do not work (when they worked on InDesign). What's happening? How can I fix these problems?

    If you're running Kindle Previewer (as opposed to the Kindle plug-in for InDesign), you would have to create an EPUB first. What did the EPUB file look like in Adobe Digital Editions?
    Did you apply a paragraph style to the paragraphs which have the problem?
    Did you make the TOC from InDesign's TOC feature? Do the links work in the EPUB file?
    Do you have the latest version of Kindle Previewer?

  • Extra Lines in my TOC

    Hello,
    I've tried to look for post about the problem I'm having with creating my TOC in Indesign CS6. When I go to create my TOC it creates my main header, subheader, but then adds these extra lines that starts off with a number then leader dots and ends with the same number or the next number sequence. I've attached what error I'm getting. Anyone have an idea what's happening? Or point me to a thread? Thanks in advance.

    That's pretty strange. Do those numbers appear as paragraphs or isolated stories on the pages?

  • TOC - removing one dot after an entry (before the dot leader)

    Can anyone help me with an issues I'm having with the TOC in InDesign?  I'm working in CS5, but I've had the same issue in CC.
    Here's what's happening:
    I have a TOC for figures that show up in a document. Each figure has a caption (for example: Figure 1 Triangle.)
    Those captions have a paragraph styles assigned to them, and that paragraph style links to the TOC for the figure list.
    Do you see the "." at the end of the caption? That dot goes into the TOC entry as well. This looks bad because there is a space between that "." and the dot leader that comes after the entry. I am at wit's end to figure out how to get rid of that space, or get rid of the dot, or something. The client is very adamant about there being a "." at the end of the caption, and there NOT being a dot at the end of the entry in the TOC.
    Please help. What should I do??

    I knew you would have an idea. That's why I ask you
    Here's a screenshot of the TOC as I want it to look:
    sorry that it's not in English, but you get the point, right? The first work on the left is "Figure."
    I added a forced line break in Figure 3 to make it go onto the next line. That wasn't a good thing to do though, because the break gets overridden when I update the TOC. If I add the line break in the actual Figure 3 caption on page 6, the TOC picks that up. The problem is that I don't want a line break in the actual caption on page 6.
    Here's the TOC as it updates:
    The figure 3 line takes up too much space and there is no space for the tab leader. And I don't really want to change the tracking in that caption, though I could do that if theres no other way.
    Please help
