TOC with Layout Pages

I'm new to Pages. I have figured out how to do a TOC with the word processor files but if I use Layout Break and drop in layout pages, the TOC will not update to see any of the text in the text boxes, even if I declare it to be a style for the TOC (Header 1, etc.) I've looked online, in the manual and everywhere and can't find anything. I want to be able to have a TOC with my newsletter but even if I create it in word processor pages and then try to add layout to later pages, it won't identify any text in the layout pages. Can you help?

Christine,
Welcome to Apple discussions.
I think you've encountered one of the interesting "features" of Pages. In building a TOC, it will only recognize text that's on the text layer -- which means you have to have a word processing document, and not a page layout document. Page layout docs don't have a text layer, which is why you've been putting your text in a text box, which the TOC won't find. Odd, eh?

• Issues with layout pages and templates.

So to save time I have started creating my own templates. For instance I want one with mostly black pages so I have created new 'pages' under the 'layout' bar (the one you have to pull down). this works fine for simple pages of 1/2/3 columns and blank pages but I have started making more complex ones - for example I want to have a text box with text already in a certain font and colour which I can then change from page to page, So I created a text box in a layout page, bt when I use this layout on a page the text box i created cannot be modified in anyway (only the filler text in the linked text boxes seems to be modifiable. I also tried to make a 'layout page' with a gallery, a placeholder with all the attributes I want in it, again when I select that page as an option the gallery cannot be changed, making it pretty useless - is there anyway to enable images/galleries/text boxes as 'placeholders'?

I think any element can serve as a 'placeholder', at least in general terms.
When working with such items, be sure to always acknowledge how/if they're linked/locked/anchored/layered/grouped and if those are in done in conjunction with other items.

Note your image isn't working, at least not for me ...be sure to add/insert using the 'camera' icon, thanks.

• Getting chapter numbers to show up in the TOC with the page numbers...

First, thank you all very much for posting replies. This forum is wonderful.
I have a doc that needs to have the chapter numbers show up with the page numbers in the TOC.
I insert the <$chapnum> and <$currentpagenum> in the footer, and I get 1-1 to show up.
To include the 1-1 in the TOC, do I have to edit the Reference Page, or is there another way.
Thank you SO much for your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you VERY much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Got it to work. However, my TOC will not update with the new building blocks.
Have played and played with it. Any suggestions?
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

• How can I merge documents with layout written with pages? How can I copy pages-document with layout and paste it into another pages document?

Hi
I am working with pages for a book and have made already a layout whre photos and graphs etc. are partly outside of the area for the text, their posotion is not fixed the the text.
And now I nedd support: When I add text or a photo to the layout the text moves and the unfixed photos etc. keep there position. This means I have to update each photo or graph to shift it to the new position ore I have to place photos etc. within the frame of the text, which is not the kind of layout I am going for.
I hope for two reliefs, which I do not know how to realize it.
1. If I specify each chapter as a new partition starting with own page (then I hoped) the new section would shift together into a new page and the positions of photos etc. and text would stay fix. But unfortunately this seeems not to be the case. Question: is this possibe orno? If yes, how to do it?
I could divede the whole txt chapter by chapter into individual documents, which are seperatly created and worked. At the end I would have to merge all this document into one. Is it possibe to merge different pages-document into one document?
Who can help me?
Thanks Hartmut

Images and other object can either be floating or be inline. Yours are floating and will not move with the text. Inline object will move with the text but can't be outside the text layer. It doesn't help if you have created section in the document. Floating images doesn't care. Nor will it help if you create several documents that you want to merge later. Doesn't make any difference.
My suggestion is that until your text is finished you have the images inline. Then as a last editing you can start make the images floating and move them a little.

• Unable to create a complate PDF (with title page, toc, chapter, backmatter, index) from a valid ditamap

Following is the ditamap i am using to create the PDF. This has booktitle, front matter, toc, chapter and backmatter. I am able to generate a PDF (complete with title page, toc, chapter, backmatter, index) using fop 0.25. However, when I try to create a pdf in FM 9.0, I get only the chapter. How can get the others through FM 9.0. Please provide a solution.

Unfortunately, default FM9 DITA does not support the automatic creation of the special bookmap files (toc, index, etc.). The only way to do it in FM9 is to manually add those generated lists to the book after you've generated it.
DITA-FMx 1.1 provides the ability to automatically create FM generated lists as well as apply numbering and pagination (and many other properties) automatically when you generate a book from a bookmap. For more info and to download a trial ..

• Creating publishing page in specific folder and with custom page layout using JSOM

Hi!
I have a site collection under my root, in which I have a page library with a folder inside. I want to create a publishing page inside the folder using JSOM. The API provides the following information on the three possible ways of how you can create a publishing
page.
PublishingPageInformation with all defaults.
PublishingPageInformation.Name and PublishingPageInformation.PageLayoutListItem.
PublishingPageInformation.Name, PublishingPageInformation.PageLayoutListItem and PublishingPageInformation.Folder.
Source - SP.Publishing.PublishingPageInformation Properties (sp.publishing)
Since I want to create the page in a specific folder in the page library, I have to go for the last option.
I have a function call chain that look as follows:
getLanguageID(webUrl, languageID)
.then(function(resolveVal) {
language = resolveVal;
return checkPageExist();
.then(getEditorialNewsFolderJSOM)
.then(getAssociatedPageLayoutListItem)
.then(addPublishingPage)
The first two methods,
getEditorialNewsFolderJSOM
getAssociatedPageLayoutListItem
fetches the required data as SP.Folder- and SP.ListItem-objects.
The problem occurs when
addPublishingPage
is called. This method, in turns calls this function.
var pageInfo = new SP.Publishing.PublishingPageInformation();
pageInfo.set_name(publishPage.title);
pageInfo.set_pageLayoutListItem(pageLayoutListItem);
pageInfo.set_folder(editorialNewsFolder);
pageCreationContext.newPage = pubWeb.addPublishingPage(pageInfo);
clientContext.load(pageCreationContext.newPage);
clientContext.executeQueryAsync(function() {
publishPage.isPageCheckOut = true;
resolve();
}, function(error) {
reject(precio.intranet.resource.errCreateContent_addPublishPage);
The error happens when this function is called with the page information object.
SP.Publishing.PublishingWeb.addPublishingPage(pageInformation)
Error:
Cannot read property '$2t_0' of undefined
and it happens in SP.Runtime.js.
I've tried this
sample code from the MSDN-team, and added the pagelayout and folder properties, but it renders the same error.
Creating a page directly in the page library with a blank SP.PublishingPageInformation object works perfectly fine!
What could possibly be wrong? The error isn't something that I can debug myself since it happens in SP.Runtime.js, and the documentation for this is very sparse!
Any help on how to resolve this issue would be helpful!

• TOC problem in pages

Hello friends,
I just purchased the iWork 08 package because i just want to avoid MS office. Hence, when i tried to open my thesis in word format, the pages seems cannot recognise most of the tables, text boxes, and most importantly the table of content and it says the inspector cannot recognize the heading formats in the word documrnt. Is it mean that I need to redefine all the headings and sub-headings int he document in order to use the TOC function in pages 08?
I tried to open a test document in pages 08, then type something and define some lines as headins, follow the instruction to open the inspector and select desired heading levels for the TOC, hence in the sections button of the format bar, it does not have any option to create a TOC as described in the tutorial from Apple, instead it has only two options, a blank page or a text page, is it anything wrong with the pages 08? what is the correct way to create a TOC in pages and to import one from my old Word documents?
Please help...
Tony.

Colin,
One of the first comments I made in this discussion group an hour after purchasing iWork '08 was my confusion about the difference between the two modes. After using it for months now, I've come to the conclusion that it's a response to the insanely huge amount of tech support calls they must have gotten from people wanting to know why they couldn't drag and move objects in Pages 2. Apple must have gotten tired of explaining to people the difference between Fixed On Page (now called Floating) and Moves With Text (now called Inline). My guess is that it was easier for Apple to add a Page Layout mode in which all objects are defined as Floating, since Inline objects can only appear on a text layer. Apple simply chose to remove the text layer, thus eliminating Inline objects that can't be dragged, thus eliminating 90 percent of their tech-support calls. Truthfully, I preferred the old way, but then I'm on this discussion group every day and have the opportunity to learn little proactive tricks like clicking in the gray margin area to make the cursor disappear, then inserting an object. Or REactive tricks like selecting the object, then going to the Wrap inspector to change it from Inline to Floating. These are things that aren't very intuitive to new users, and I can understand their confusion. Apparently, Apple can, too.

• TOC. Insert page. TOC contents is on page 1. Upon export it is last page ??

Hi again,
I am using a set of tutorials that outline how to create my ePub TOC.
I used this method successfully for my last ebook.
This time, I am subdividing my TOC.
The TOC links are NOT Chronologically based by the chapter sequence
but based upon a Subject.
A fictional TOC example follows.
Locations
Alaska
Hawaii
California
Maine
Time periods
1700s
1800s
1900s
2000s
PROBLEM.
I needed to add or rather insert a page at the very beginning of my document (page 2) so that I could physically type in the TOC Contents as above.
Layout > pages > insert pages > insert after page 2.
When I export this....
The TOC Contents is the very last page of the ePub.
But in my inDesign Document it is on page 1.
QUESTION 1.
Can someone explain this please ?
Thanks again.
I have the Indesign 800+ page PDF but there is not anything on TOC.
Thanks again.

It probably has something to do with how your text boxes are connected in InDesign. You need to put the table of contents in the "flow" of the book.

• Does anyone know how to win a fight with layout manager?

I am using the form designer in netBeans to design my page, which has a jPanel on the left and a number of controls on the right.
My problem is that when I eventually get it to look half right at design time, it looks different at run time. The fonts are different, the combo boxes are a different height and some of my text boxes are 4 times as wide. http://RPSeaman.googlepages.com/layout.GIF shows both the design-time view and the run-time view. How can I win my fight with layout manager?

I'd like to do an experiment where you take say 20 pairs of students of java, with each pair matched in terms of prior programming and java experience, general knowledge, etc... and set one of each pair to learn Swing using netbeans and its layout generator with the other pair learning to code Swing by hand. Then 6 months later compare their abilities. I'll bet that the code by hand group will blow the other group out of the water in terms of understanding and ability.

• How to create a report with different page sizes

Hi,
I would like to create a report with different page sizes, it's possible to do it with diadem?
When I change the layout parameters, changes afect to all sheets...
Is there a way to change page size individually for each sheet?
Thanks in advance.
Marc

Hi Marc,
You can use the DocStart and DocEnd commands along with the PicPrint command to spool multiple print commands to the same output PDF file using the direct printer approach. This should enable you to programmatically specify the page size differently for each sheet that you add to the print job.
' Print PDF Page by Page.VBS
OPTION EXPLICIT
Dim i, Path, OldPrintName
Path = AutoActPath & "2D Stacked"
Call DataDelAll
Call DataFileLoad(Path & ".TDM")
PDFFileName = Path & " Page by Page.pdf"
IF FileExist(PDFFileName) THEN Call FileDelete(PDFFileName)
OldPrintName = PrintName
PrintName = "winspool,DIAdem PDF Export,LPT1:" ' Set to PDF printer
PDFResolution = "72 DPI" ' "2400 DPI" , "default"
PDFOptimization = TRUE
PDFFontsEmbedded = FALSE
PDFJPGCompressed = "high"
PrintOrient = "landscape" ' orient paper
Call PrintMaxScale("GRAPH") ' auto-max, see alternative margin setting variables below
PrintLeftMarg = 0.181
PrintTopMarg = 0.181
PrintWidth = 10.67
'PrintHeigth = 7 (read-only)
Call WndShow("REPORT")
Call DocStart ' Begin multi-page document/print job
FOR i = 1 TO 4
Call PicLoad(Path & ".TDR")
Call GraphSheetNGet(1)
Call GraphSheetRename(GraphSheetName, "Page " & i)
Call PicUpdate
Call PicPrint("WinPrint") ' Add a page to be printed
NEXT ' i
Call DocEnd ' End multi-page document/print job
PrintName = OldPrintName
Call ExtProgram(PDFFileName)

• Generate TOC with Section Markers?

It's been a while since I've had to setup and create a TOC for a single file long document, but I'm pretty sure that I've created TOCs this way in the past. So, why won't the text in Section Markers show up in the TOC? Is it even possible to generate a TOC that has Section Marker text?
I'm using InDesign CS5 in Windows. I've got a single file document that I'm trying to generate a TOC for. I've designed a 16 page handbook in one inDesign file which includes a Cover page, TOC page, and seven "chapters".
I created separate sections for each "chapter" and used Section Markers at the top of the Master page for the chapter names. This is something I've done in the past for single file long documents with multiple chapters.
I've set the first page of each "chapter" as a new Section on the Pages panel. In the Numbering and Section Options for each page, I've checked Start Section, Automatic Page Numbering, Page Numbering Style: 1,2,3,4... and in Section Marker: I've put the "chapter" name in the text box.
I set up Paragraph and and Character Styles and used them throughout my document. When I set up the TOC I set up everything correctly, including my Section Marker style for the chapter names and a heading style that I used for all the sub headings in my file.
When I insert the TOC, the sub headings with their page numbers generate but the chapter headings which are Section Markers do not generate. Am I missing something or is it even possible to include the text for Section Markers in a TOC? I'm sure that it's worked in the past. Can anyone offer a solution for this?
thanks,
Kat

awesome! ...worked like a charm. I knew I was forgetting something.

• How do I get my Fluid Grid Layout page to resizes from portrait to landscape for iPhones?

Starting in portrait on my iPhone 4, the fluid grid layout page does not resize when I turn to landscape. After I refresh / resize to fit the page on landscape and then turn the iPhone to portrait, the page resizes just fine. Everything seems to be working just fine on the desktop, ignoring IE. Could it be my media query tags?

• How can I print a pdf in the actual size with a page border?

How can I print a pdf in the actual size with a page border? (2 pages per sheet preferred)
I usually print pdfs of books at a copy shop and they turn out fine.
The problem comes when I try to print the same books at home.
I use Adobe Acrobat X with the same settings: "multiple pages per sheet" (2x1) and page border. But the pages are slightly shrunken when printed. I think this is because my printer can't print as closely to the margins. Still, two pages should be able to fit on one sheet in actual size. Are there any layout settings that I can play with to find a better fit, besides portrait and landscape?
If I select page scaling "none," I'm able to print the pdf in actual size, one page per sheet. But there's no option to add a page border.

I have a test with some questions (multiple choice, FIB, matching, etc). I have just one button to submit all the answers, and after submiting the student can see his score and review the test to know where he failed. He can't answer again. However, he can change the answer multiple times before submiting.
"if i turn on success/failure captions the student will see them while answering" - before submitting
"if i turn them off he wont know what's the right answer" - after submitting
My results page is the default. I didn't use any variable. When i go to the results page after reviewing the test all the entry boxes are "wrong".

• Get jQuery Document Ready to work in a Custom Layout Page

Hi
Working with a branding company I have placed my Bootstrap and JQuery files at the bottom of my custom Master page

All good! Now if I add a $(document).ready(function() below the above definitions and say have a date picker widget marked up this
works.
I have noticed that in my case I am unable to run document ready function at the custom page layout level- only the one in the custom master file is ever executed - I have tried moving the above definition files into the header as per the sample in
Bootstrap2.html but SharePoint simply removes them during the conversion. Moving the same document ready function out of the master into the layout page doesn't work
I guess my question is am I am have a unique document ready function at the page layout level as this I would have thought this would be possible - In my case I need my JQuery functon to perform some runtime branding that is unique per page

for a quick and dirty implementation, I coded this up which works. I will see about the other implementation as suggested by Hugh as I am not entirely happy about loading the document ready as there is a slight delays as the body class is set and the
page is rendered
var bodyCSS ;
function SetBodyCSS()
var ctx = new SP.ClientContext();
var site = ctx.get_site();
var web = ctx.get_web();
// construct a json object
ctx.load(web);
ctx.executeQueryAsync(function(s, a){
var siteBodyContainerCSS = {
"Sales": "Pink",
"IT": "burgundy"
// lookup the class to set from the title
bodyCSS = siteBodyContainerCSS[web.get_title()];
// only bother to set if not null , undefined or empty
if (bodyCSS)
$('#s4-bodyContainer').removeClass("default");
$('#s4-bodyContainer').addClass(bodyCSS);
else
alert( ' no body css class defined for ' + web.get_title()) ;
// now call this to get the body css class
//

//
$(document).ready(function() {
ExecuteOrDelayUntilScriptLoaded(function () {
/* your code here */
SetBodyCSS();
}, "sp.js");
$('#dp6').datepicker();

• How to 'flatten' interactive forms with Fixed Pages?

I have a large project I am working on that is automating the population of forms with strict layouts. (Provided by State governments for licensing requirements). I have the need to generate flattened version, or image of the document as one of the last steps of the process. The final step is to use "Insert Pages" to include into the newly created PDF, other PDFs that were attachments to the original document. These would include employment histories, Residential histories, etc. all are in PDF format.
The current method is to print the main document to "Adobe PDF", and save the file as a PDF to the file system. This newly saved PDF will accept Inserted pages as it is no longer deemed interactive with Fixed Pages, where the original with Fixed Pages will not accept insertions.
I have not been able to find a way of doing this via Javascript.
My goal is to find a way to flatten or image the document, then insert the attachments into the main document to create one compound instrument that records the licensure filing, and can be printed off and sent to the government, and retained for proof of filing.
Any ideas of how to replicate the print to "Adobe PDF" function and retain a handle to the new document object would be greatly appreciated. The fileName feature on the print method seems to be limited to ".ps", and ".prn" extensions.
Thank You
Mark

I have not been able to Add Pages to a form that has Fixed Pages - either through the UI, or JavaScript. Options are greyed out in the UI.
Could you expand on what you mean by "You can set the Designer properties to Print Form"?
Thanks
Mark
