TOC - Word Processing Document

Hello,
I had been working to create a yearbook in Pages '09 using the Page Laybout mode mode. I wanted to insert a TOC and learned this was not possible. So I created a new document and is now a Word Processing Mode File.
I went to create a TOC but what I now am experiencing is that any text inside of a text box will not appear. In other words, the only text in my TOC is the text that is in the linear mode of the document.
Is there any solution? or Suggestions?
Thanks!
H

You work similarly to Creationists. "Knowing" the answer you then "find" it. Making whichever of multiple interpretations fit, with the judicious use of a rubber mallet.
In User Interface Design a good designer assumes, quite correctly, that the user does not know the answer just because you do and makes sure that they are informed when and where the answer is needed.
So when a task fails, as for instance by trying to create a TOC in Layout mode, or in a floating text box, a dialogue tells the user why.
Clearly the quote below fails to mention key information such as:
1. TOC are not possible in Layout mode. Since Layout mode rarely gets mentioned in the User Guide, even when it should, this already introduces the doubt of irregular omission.
2. TOC does not index text in floating textboxes even when they have "content that follows it".
3. A Word Processing template is not listed as a "requirement" only as an instance. This is not the only instance in the User Guide where a requirement is not listed but there enough cases where requirements are mentioned to assume that the authors may in theory understand the principle.

  • Office Open XML word processing document

I am getting the following message when I try to open a Word (docx) Document on my iPhone 6 running iOS 8 (latest build at 08/10/14) from within an email account:
"Office Open XML word processing document"
I have tried installing Microsoft Office Mobile and a third part App called Documents.
I have been sent different emails in DocX format (.docx) and I can not open any of them.
I have tried pages on my iPhone and that does not work eaither.
I can however open PDF documents.
I have rebooted/restarted the iPhone twice.
I have a coleage with an iPhone 5 with iOS 8 and they have the same problem.
I have another coleage who has an iPhone 4 on an older version of iOS and theirs works fine.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Anthony

I have had this problem for a while now. The only thing that worked is:
    On your iOS Device:
Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings
Once it restores, connect to iTunes
do not Restore from Back Up (this doesn't work) - instead select Set up as New Device
This resolved the problem opening all mail attachments (PDF, .docx, .doc, .pptx, .ppt, .xlsx, etc.)
    Good luck.

  • Very stupid question -- how do I delete old word processing documents??

I have a zillion old word processing documents stored away. Many of them are old school projects my kids did, and I would really like to clean house. But I can't figure out how.
Going to "File," clicking on "Open" to get the list of all documents, then highlighting a document and hitting "delete" (which is pretty much what you do in WordPerfect) does NOT do the job. Nothing happens.
I ask this very basic question because the Appleworks "Help" feature on my machine doesn't give an answer, and neither (as far as I can tell) does the pdf Appleworks manual on the Apple site. I'm at a loss. Can anyone give me a hand with this?

Deleting files from a dialog whose purpose is to open
them is not the Mac way. Simply locate the files in
the Finder and drag them from their folder to the
    trash.
Thank you so very much! I've worked in Appleworks on one computer or another for two years and have exhausted every research item I had trying to figure what should be a very simple action. AppleHelp sure doesn't address it nor does The Missing Manual for Appleworks. How simple - but how impossible to know unless someone told you. And, yes, this is the Mac way.
    Thanks again!

  • How to delete an old locked appleworks (.cwk) word processing document?

How to delete an old locked appleworks (.cwk) word processing document? This is merely a startup file to make AppleWorks come up with text formatting etc all set to desired styles. AppleWorks doesn't work in Mavericks. I cannot find how to use Get Info to unlock this file so that it may be shoved to the trash.

    Eustace,
    1. Yes, the screenshot did not survive the trip into the text entry box after I hit send or whatever. Maybe I should upload it to my Flickr account and give it its own set and then insert the URL for that set here.
Thanks for the link. I've never used Terminal before so I tried out your link twice. I was able to follow the directions but I did not see an icon for the created file appear on my desktop. Then I added two screenshots to my desktop and those did not appear either. So, I restarted and both the file names that I'd created with terminal and the screen shots appeared on the desktop. Then I tried to use Terminal to make the added file disappear and it would not. However, I was able to select the created filenames and the screen shots and dump them all in the trash and empty the trash.
This morning I tried the method to create a file on the desktop a third time and it still does not appear on the desktop. What is the command for showing a listing of all the files in a directory? Suppose I wanted a listing of all the files on my desktop. I probably should be looking on the internet for a tutorial on using Terminal.
I understand your suggestion that I can use Terminal to delete the unwanted locked files but my computer is not acting quite the way the tutorial in your link suggests.
Thanks for the idea. It tells me I need to learn a bit about using Terminal.

  • How do make a watermark appear on each page in a word processing document?

I got a watermark to show up on my first page that says in a big font, "Draft copy". How do I go about having this appear on every page? I'm using the word processing mode of Pages.
    Thank you.

    PS,
Select your watermark and Format > Advanced > Move Object to Section Master.
If your document already has more than one Sections, you will have to Copy this object and paste it into each Section. Being a "Section Master" mean that it will appear on each page of the section you insert it into.

  • Generating html from word processing document

I've got a fairly short two-column newsletter with six graphics that I want to publish in html using AW v6.2. I select save as html but the resulting document includes none of my text or graphics, hmmm. So I look at the web templates starting points and export these templates as html and get the same result - headers but no content. TIA!

If you are expecting to get a page of HTML that will look exactly like your word processing page, that is not going to happen. ThisUser Tip tells you probably more than you want to know about creating HTML in Appleworks, but I would strongly suggest not doing this in Appleworks. If you don't have a regular web program, download the free NVU (nvu.org) and use that instead.
BTW, the "web templates" in Appleworks are not templates for web pages, but rather regular appleworks document templates that are hosted on a web server for download.

  • Watermarks, how to add to a Pages word processing document?

OK, I read the directions, searched this forum. How do you add an object? I have an existing document, word processing layout and need to add a watermark that is diagonal, and says copy. I cannot find anything including page 60 of the guide that actually tells you how to and and object. Never mind I do not really understand what an object is. Old ****, what can I say.
    Steve H

The way I find the easiest.
Tool Bar > View > Show Layout.
Tool Bar > Text Box > Drag out across the page.
Type COPY in the Text Box > select text and enlarge using the format bar > Text Size. Then set Centre alignment. While Text is still selected > Format bar > Text Colour. Click on Show Colors which brings up the standard Apple colour menu with the opacity slider > set to 25%. or less.
Click on edge of Text Box > Hold down the command key and use the double sided arrow on the curser to move the Text Box into a diagonal position.

  • Word Processing document to fit screen size.

    Hello.
I have opened Appleworks and then opened a new WP document to start work on. The problem is it is only filling a third of the available screen. It appears to be a real waste. I want to work on the document while it is displayed using every available inch of the screen. So it is in what I call 'real-time size' on a 12 inch notebook. I am fairly used to using Microsoft Office, but as you can tell from this post have had very little time with Appleworks or Mac's. I'm sure there is a very simple solution, and if somebody could help me using very simple language I would most grateful.
    Thank you in advance.
    iBook G4 12 inch   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Appleworks does not have an automatic zoom feature that will enlarge the text so that it spans the width of the window. However, you can manually increase the zoom level so that the text appears larger in order to fill up more of your screen. Changing the zoom level only changes how large things appear on screen, not how large the text is on the page (like in Word).
To increase the zoom level, you use the buttons found at the bottom left corner of the window. You'll see a small rectangle that displays the zoom level. At first, it will read '100'. If you click on this, it will give you a pop up menu with percentages ranging from 25% ro 800% and a choice for other. When you first click you may only see numbers smaller than 100%, but if you point the mouse at the triangle at the end of the list, it will scroll down the list so you can see the rest of the choices.
Directly to the right of this '100' you will see two small buttons with what looks like a filled line chart. The first has small "peaks" and the second shows higher "peaks". As you might expect, the first is to decrease zoom level, the other to increase zoom level.
You can use these controls to change the zoom level so that you fill the whole screen to your liking.
BTW, the next button after the zoom controls is the on which hides and shows the tools (same as "Show Tools" under the Window menu). You can also double click on the 'Page 1' to bring up a dialog that lets you enter a number to jump to another page.

  • Word Processing Documents Question

In trying to fill out certain online forms, instead of a text field I get black writing reading FORMTEXT. I emailed someone in charge of the site, who emailed a tech who wrote this: "It looks like she doesn’t have Office installed, which means her Mac is opening them with a generic text reader of some sort that is simply not smart enough to recognize Word form fields. Short of purchasing Office for Mac, I believe there is a free software alternative called AbiWord that would allow her to open and view Word docs properly on her Mac."
I downloaded AbiWord and the form still does the same thing in both Safari and Firefox. Short of going on someone else's PC, what can I do to make this work on the Mac? Thanks for any leads.

Dang. I needed X 11 to run Gimp, and couldn't make it work downloading from a website, so got my Tiger installation disk. I installed X 11 (it said it was successful) and while I was at it I installed every other dang thing on there, although my hard drive is nearly full and most of the space is taken up with Applications that I have no idea what they're supposed to do but don't dare get rid of in case it's something vital. So now I have only 4.04 of 57 GB left on my hard drive, Gimp is still telling me I don't have X 11, and also these forms I thought might now work (after a tech sent a snotty email saying my reader wasn't smart enough) still don't work. I am bummed.

  • I am copying and pasting into a new, Pages document (from the word processing menu), and I paste in text that is longer than one page, it doesn't continue onto the next page.  I can't see the end. How do I get it to show everything I paste in?

I want to copy an extensive amount of text from a web page into a Pages word processing document, but it seems to chop it up into text boxes, some of which aren't long enough to show all of the lines of text.  I can't get hold of a bottom edge of the boxes to drag them to make them longer.  I tried several times starting over with a new, blank page (and I made sure to choose from the Word Processing part of the dropdown menu, since I read about a similar problem that said not to use the layout menu.  It keeps doing the same thing.  What do I have to do to get long text pasted to multiple pages, instead of it trying to be all on one page?
In the long run, what I want is to create this as an ePub book.  Is there a better way to go about this?

    Hi Ellen,
Copying from web pages can include some weird formatting. Instead of Paste, use Paste and Match Style (Edit Menu).
    Regards,
    Ian.

I have created an 100 page booklet in Pages, with many photographs, and much written word, can I export it to ePub, and make an electronic book, because it says that "Note: The Pages document must have been created using a word processing template"?....
Basically what I want to do is publish the document into both an eDocument, and a hard copy document. What is the best way to do this?

No Peter, this statement came right off the Apple ePub statement when outlining how to use ePub. the full context is:

ePub is an open ebook standard produced by the International Digital Publishing Forum. Pages ’09 lets you export your documents in ePub format for reading with iBooks on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
iBooks supports both ePub and PDF file formats, and you can export both from Pages.

Creating an ePub Document to Read in iBooks
You can export any Pages word processing document to the ePub file format for reading in an ePub reader, such as the iBooks application on the iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Documents created in page layout templates can’t be exported to the ePub format.
Documents exported to ePub format will look different than their Pages counterparts. If you want to get the best document fidelity between the Pages and ePub formats, style your Pages document with paragraph styles and other formatting attributes allowed in an ePub file. A sample document is provided on the Apple Support site that features styles and guidelines to help you create a Pages document that’s optimized for export to the ePub file format, which you can use as a template or a guide. To learn more about using paragraph styles in Pages, see the topics under the heading “Working with Styles” in the Pages built-in help.
To read your ePub document in iBooks on your mobile device, you must transfer the ePub file that you create onto your device.
To use the “ePub Best Practices” sample documentTo learn more about using the ePub format and get a better feel for how a Pages document might appear as a book in iBooks, it’s a good idea to download the “ePub Best Practices” sample document. After reading the guidelines and instructions within the document, you can use it as a template to create your own document. You can also import the styles from the sample document into a new document you create.
Download the “ePub Best Practices” sample document at the following web address:
    http://images.apple.com/support/pages/docs/ePub_Best_Practices_EN.zip
Do either of the following:Use the sample document as a template.Import the paragraph styles from the sample document into a new or existing Pages document.
Export the document you create to ePub format to see how it looks in iBooks.
Preparing an existing Pages document for export to ePub format
Documents exported to the ePub format automatically appear with page breaks before every chapter. A table of contents is automatically generated, which allows readers to jump quickly to any chapter title, heading, or subheading in the book. In order to create a meaningful table of contents, it’s important to apply appropriate styles within your document. The ePub reader uses the paragraph styles to determine which items should appear in the table of contents for your book.
Note: The Pages document must have been created using a word processing template.
