Today begins a new iBook Chapter

Just got my new iBook G4 today and I can't wait to take it home to get it out of the box and get the party started.
My G3 is in the shop getting a new hard drive installed.

Gareth,
I interpret this Discussion board as a mainly for questions. Thats why it is in support. But, the new Discussion format has a new feature, new to me at least. When you post a new thread, it says "you have 15 minutes to remove the question" or something like that. In small letters it explains that by clicking the link you are removing the question aspect of the post. Therefor making it more of a statement thread. Do you understand what I mean. I think that now the Discussion board is for all, but I don't think it would be alright for everyday people start 20 new threads saying APPLE RULES! or PCs CAUSE ULSERS! (also negative). Do you and everyone else know what I mean?
Just some thoughts,
Jon

  • Moving off an old iMac to a new iBook

My wife and I currently share a iMac G3 (OSX 10.3.9) with the entire household which includes 5 user accounts (me the administrator and 4 others). I bouought a new iBook that arrived in the mail today. The new iBook will "only" be used by my wife and I. I don't want the user accounts for the other 3 people on the iBook. I know that the easy way to migrate from an old computer to a new one is the FireWire cable and the automatic transfer Wizard (I think there is a different name for this) that can get all the stuff from the old computer to the new one. Being as I don't want ALL the stuff from the old computer to be on the new one (I only want the accunt info, all the e-mail, addreess book, and iCal stuff)..........Should I use the automatic transfer Wizard OR should i just try and create new users for my wife and I on the new iBook?
IF that is the thing to do then I wonder where all the old e-mails, ical info and address book info is stored on the old computer???? I would imagine that If I know where those things are then I could just copy them myself.
OR....maybe instead the best plan of action might be to go ahead and let the automatic transfer Wizard do it's stuff and then just figure out how do delete the user accounts that I don't want on the new iBook?
What do you think is the best thing to do here???
HOw easy is it do delete user accounts you don't need?
    Thanks for your help.
    Morris

The Migration Assistant will allow you to select which users you import. This import does not delete anything out of the old computer.

P.S. Just to be clear, I'm guessing you actually purchased a new "MacBook" and not a new "iBook"?

  • Is it possible to use the Study Cards feature in iBooks without the special new .iBooks format?

The all new iBooks 2 has been released today, with quite a compelling array of features for students. I've watched a few videos, among those the introducory video from Apple, and one of the features that appealed to me most is the Study Cards feature, which uses notes you've created to generate study cards you can practise with.
Now, I have a bunch of .ePub books, most of which are annotated and have notes. To my surprise (and a tiny bit of frustration) however, I wasn't able to find the button to activate Study Cards.
I've tried to make a book myself using the also newly released iBooks Author application, and found that with the new book it indeed is possible to use the notes.
Is there any way to make Study Cards available for .ePub books as well?

I was thinking, perhaps there's a way to import ePub files into the iBook Author software, and thus create an iBooks format that enables the use of Study Cards.
I haven't found an easy way to do so yet, though. Perhaps some authors with more experience could share their methods of converting their published books to this new format, so we can try to do it with our own (DRM free) ebooks?

  • Migrating old ibook's files on an external hard drive on to new iBook

I have an old white iBook G3 500 with a power adapter connector problem. Since I can no longer plug in the power adapter I transferred all of the old iBook's files to a bootable external firewire hard drive using the program Super Duper, which copies all files including system and hidden files. I then connected the hard drive to a G4 tower and booted it from the external drive. All of my files and applications worked fine.
Today I received a brand new iBook 14 Inch G4 1.42 GHz. When I start it up I would like to transfer all of the files and applications from the external drive. Can I just connect the external drive and tell the new iBook to transfer all of the files?
I have used the set up assistant once or twice before using firewire target mode, but because I use it so seldomly I want to make sure this was a proper way to migrate the data and applications from my old machine.
    iBook 14 Inch G4 1.42 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Can I just connect the external drive and tell the new iBook to transfer all of the files?
Yes, assuming the external drive is a bootable clone. If it won't boot the old iBook, then the clone needs to be redone in such a way to make it bootable. It probably won't boot the new iBook unless it has 10.4.4 on it.

  • Is there a way to reorder or introduce new pages in iBooks Author, without creating a new IBook?

Is there a way to reorder or introduce new pages in iBooks Author, without creating a new IBook? Is this possible?

The main thing is...you have a way to move forward with your project.
If I may offer some tips, learn to customise the template to suit your project...its basically very easy..once you try.Again a search will bring up posts that address this topic.
IF you do create your own template..save it as a template before using it, that way you have a clean version every time.
When putting your book together save versions as you go along..later you can delete them.
If, as .. you seem to have found, you need to change things or want to try other options, you can copy whole chapters or sections and paste in a new order or  into another version of your template. If you copy into a different template or book, the template basic also transfer to the template. Best way to discover what can be done is simply open a new book to play with! Add a few chapters and sections...include some pages..and just drag things around, copy and paste where you choose. Its just learning and after you delete the junk!..BTW, yes, you can have single pages before the first chapter...i.e. I open a copyright page into a chapter...that drag it to the top of the book tree, a blue line will appear ..drop it.
If you need any help or advice, its available in abundance on this forum.  Have fun...

  • New iBook, kernel panics when awakened from sleep

I've been going nuts for several weeks now due to issues with my new iBook G4. When it is not plugged in, it may be fine when it wakes from sleep, or else it may wake to a black screen of death or else wake up and then freeze (requiring a restart) a few seconds after waking up.
I've reset the PMU several times, removed the third-party RAM (which I thought resolved the issue, until two crashes today when waking up unplugged), reset the PRAM, ran Disk Utility, did an archive and install of 10.4.2, etc. For a day, it would also go through infinite wake/sleep cycles when plugged in with the lid closed, but it resolved on its own within 24 hours. I was all set to send it in to Apple when the issue resolved itself on its own.
But I'm stumped as to the nature of the kernel panics/freezes, etc. They only happen when the iBook is unplugged from AC, USB, etc. and it is not 100% predictable. It may happen the second time I'm waking it up after not being connected to anything. Or it may be fine.
Here's the panic log from today, the details of which are identical to the panic that happened an hour earlier:

Suggestions? Is this really a hardware issue relating to the AirPort card, or is it something related to kernel extensions? It does not appear to be a user folder-related issue (I tested that as well). Thanks!

I've been having similar problems with my iBook G4/1GHz computer. I haven't yet figured it out when or why it crashes after sleep, but this is sure: everytime there is USB mouse connected, it does that crashing. I bought mighty mouse to make sure, it wasn't the mouse which caused the problems. But no, it wasn't the mouse.
I've tried to google some solutions, but haven't found any. This is very annoying problem. Anyway I can get that crashlog after reboot?
    Symptons:
When lid is opened, fan's are started, but no picture or network connection or anything is alive. Display is black. Requires reboot to get it up and running again.
I have run hardware tests on processor, usb, video ram and ram and all have passed.

  • New iBook / Can't find old files

    Hi -
I just got my new iBook G4 today, started it up, it prompted me to connect the new iBook to my old iBook and it transferred all the files.
Fine and dandy, right?... Not quite.
I decide to do a "Find" for one of my docs. No go. I went in and manually found the document (so it did exist)...
Anyone have an idea how to make this problem go away? Is it an indexing issue? If so, what's the solution?
    Thanks!
      Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi Bmmm,
I believe Abe solved your problem, correct? I noticed you marked the tread as solved, but you did not award any points to Abe for solving it.
One of the responsibilities of the original poster (sometimes referred to as OP) is to award points to the "solver" as well as the most helpful. The reason being, not only does it show how the problem was fixed, but it 5-10 points (depending on helpful or solved) to those who helped the most. I like to think of it as paying them back with Monopoly money. It doesn't count anywhere else, but here. The reason for these points (I believe) is to show a rough estimate someone has been helpful as well as reduce the number of slipshod responses (the idea that someone will put the extra effort to try solve/help the problem). It has become proper etiquette when posting in the forums to issue these points (my opinion). I am not an Apple host/moderator, nor do I have any authority/say in this forum. I am "just another brick in the wall". It's up to you; I just thought it was something worth mentioning.
    Thanks,
    Jon

    1) What are the specs on the additional RAM you installed? Where did you buy it?
    2) If you go to the link below, you will find detailed, illustrated PDF files to show you what items are customer-installable parts and how it's done.

Check your trash can on the desktop. The old version is automatically moved to the trashcan. You should be able to move it from the trashcan back to the Apps folder within the iTunes folder. The update that was pushed out was for iBooks to work with iOS 7 not iPhone 5. iOS 7 was released today.

  • How do I rename the PDF (both Title & Author) in new ibooks for Mavericks?

    Hi!
I can't seem to amend both Title and Author for my PDFs in the new ibooks App in Mavericks.
(Opening it in Preview and renaming it does not change the Author name FYI)
The current solutions present are for 2013 and there is none for the new app in Mavericks.
My obsessiveness does not allow me to list my books in such haphard fashion.
Any kind souls able to help?
    Thank you!

LOL!  As you've explained it, the reason this community is called iBook for Macs is because you can easily change PDF titles on a Mac…
I know that people like to be gatekeepers--and I know that people can post in the wrong places--but that's not what happened here.  I was correcting the previous comment about iBooks on the iPads!  (See earlier post above.)
"iBooks.app  on iPads or Maversick is a "viewing" app ie it allows you to open books etc,. on the device its  used on.  Its "read only" in computing terms.. you cannot change anything."
I wanted to do it by not directly pointing out the person's error, but you've forced my hand!
By the way, I ended up at this thread inadvertently while looking for how to change book titles in iBooks under iOS.  So, in case anyone else ends up here looking for how to change PDF titles on their iPads, they'll know it can be done and how!
    Happy Labor Day, everyone!

  • HELP!!! New ibook user needs help really bad

I just purchased a new ibook g3 or g4 off Ebay. I'm new to the mac world but I'm getting into graphic design and the mac is the way to go...anyway....I bought this mac off ebay and all that came with it was the computer and power cord. Now I'm having issues with it and to fix the issues I need the start-up disks or the systems restore disks which I don't have. Can I get those anywhere from Apple or am I S.O.L.? Thanks

Hi mama392! And Welcome To Discussions!
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
A Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
More info here Tip: Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs.
Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, you could also consider installing that.
And then use the 10.4.7 Combo Update.
    Tiger System Requirements
    Additionally,
"Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."

Well where is your library located now if not in the iTunes folder?  See the links below on what your iTunes folder should look like and put it back together:

Perhaps you are loading a template that has a text block already on it.
You might try the blank template option and set that as your go to template in your preferences

  • How to show the pdf from the iPad in the new iBooks on the Mac Book Pro?

I have several books in PDF format on my iPad 4 but for some reason they persistently REFUSE to appear in the iBooks on my Mac book Pro (haven't checked the iPhones). The new iBooks brags that we can ontinue reading our books where we left from one device to the other, and since most of my interesting books are in PDF, how can I access this feature? What if I create a book with a iBook creator, will it show?
Thank you very much for your answers...

I figured it out (for me anyway) for syncing via USB or WiFi.
My PDFs in iBooks Mac weren't showing up in iBooks iOS & this is how I fixed it - it's syncing seamlessly now
I went to iTunes for Mac
Clicked on my device e.g. iPad
Clicked on 'Books' from along the menu that says 'Summary - Apps - Tones' etc.
    Ticked the 'Sync Books' checkbox
Selected the 'All books' button, making sure that under the menu ('Books') I had selected 'Books and PDF files'
And then pressed the sync button at the bottom right of iTunes. It worked.
It's a 'set it and forget it solution' - after doing this I no longer need to interact with iTunes for syncing PDFs & books. Even when I rename collections on iBooks Mac, it transfers seamlessly across to iBooks on my iPad/iPhone via Wi-Fi.
Hope that helps - it certainly wasn't obvious to me.
    Best,
    Haider

  • Appleworks crashing on new ibook

I bought a new ibook, opened it and started Appleworks. When I tried to write something it just crashed. Each time I try to type a letter or anything in a document, it crashes. I can open a document, but as soon as I press a key trying to write something, the same thing.
Anyone that has the same problem?
I can post a log file.
    Thanks,
    Vedran.

Thank you for your help, Peggy!
Appleworks works fine now when I uncheck the US extended keyboard in the menu bar.
However, this means that I cannot use keyboard layout for my language (croatian) which is also unicode, and cannot write text with special characters of my language! That is too bad. Is there any way that this can be fixed, or I will have to install Microsoft office? :o(
This is the only thing that bothers me so far with my new ibook, and I dont want it to spoil my otherwise great Mac experience...
Thanks again for any further suggestions you might have,
    greetings from Croatia,
    Vedran.
